Dear friends of UWC Adriatic
W
elcome to the UWC Adriatic 2011-2012 Annual Report. It provides a recap of the highlights
of the past year and celebrates the invaluable support we have received from our alumni and
friends. Their generous demonstration of faith in the mission and values of the college are examples of the
commitment that will be increasingly essential for the college to maintain its role of promoting international
and environmental understanding to future generations of scholarship students. During the last year, we
received more alumni support than ever before, even though difficult economic times are continuing to prevail
in many parts of the world. For many of our alumni their experience at UWC Adriatic was a genuinely
transformational time. That they remember the college whilst celebrating a personal life-changing event
some years afterwards is particularly gratifying. We especially thank the generosity of action and spirit of
Karen and Johannes (p20), Lucilla and Espen (p21), and Amanda and Christopher (p21). We send you our
best wishes for your future happiness.
We are also grateful to all the foundations and public institutions which supported the College this year. We

Zaid Khasro
T
his year we mourned the tragic loss of Zaid Khasro Akram, whose life was prematurely
cut short on 3 August 2011 in a car accident in his home country of Iraq. Zaid joined the
College in August 2010 as a determined and energetic character, “a friend to all”, who dreamed
of making a difference not only in Iraq, but also in the rest of the world. As a member of our
family in Duino for his one and only year at the College, Zaid was a pillar of our community who
will continue to miss his friendship and support.
Zaid’s praised IT skills were much appreciated by his friends and other fellow students, as he was
always generously willing to lend a hand, even to those he hardly knew. He quickly established
himself as the “techy” for the students’ cultural and celebratory shows throughout the year. His
generosity not only extended into College activities, but also into the daily life of his friends and
roommates; always willing to share his food and personal belongings with others, if not to teach
them about his culture, then to bring them greater comfort; for they were all away from home
too. Following the devastating news, a gathering of remembrance in the College was held in
his honour. We would like to renew our deepest sympathies to his family; Zaid will continue to
be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The Annual Fund Challenge Committee:
To commemorate Zaid, our students decided to establish a football competition in his memory.
The Annual Fund Challenge Committee is a group of leaders who, together, challenged other UWC Adriatic alumni to
increase their annual gifts to support College operations and strengthen the school to fulfill its mission for generations to
come. For the 2011-12 Annual Fund Campaign, the pioneer Annual Fund Challenge Committee members were:
Giuliano Giovannetti (Italy, UWC Adriatic 1984-86)
Pål Ristvedt (Norway, UWC Adriatic 1986-88)
Patrick Corso (Italy, UWC Adriatic 1989-91)

“I am almost crying as I write this. In fact today is the most I have cried since my grandpa died; I don’t think any of the
friends I am currently with even know how much I have cried. Not through fault of their own, but because I am so bad
expressing my feelings. I do not know how to gain the confidence to adequately do so. So I suppose that’s why I want
to write this tribute, memorial, eulogy, to show my pain at losing such a special person [...] Zaid was my roommate for
a whole academic year. Living up to twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, sleeping, working, messing around in
the same proximity, you get to know someone pretty well. You get to see the worst, and most importantly the best, of
anyone. Zaid was one of the most stubborn people I knew [...] Before his shocking death, we were at times planning
my visit to his house in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, and I was constantly overwhelmed, in the most positive of ways, by all the
things he wanted to show me. These included an eight-day tour of the region, about which he would not hear of me
wanting to pay for, even contribute towards. That can only be testimony to a wonderful family, and an immense heart of
his. Rest in peace, Zaid.”
Robin Tyne (United Kingdom, UWC Adriatic 2010-12)
The “Zaid Khasro Memorial Annual Trophy”:
T
o further honour the memory of Zaid, on Sunday the 25 March 2012 our students organised a memorial football
competition in his name. Remembered fondly as an enthusiastic football player, Zaid would never miss an opportunity to
join a match; what better way then to remember him. Over 45 students and teachers gathered at a local football ground to play
the game Zaid loved, consisting of eight participating teams of five players with at least one girl. Each intense 20-minute match
was played with excitement, enthusiasm and with great display of ball skills and sportsmanship. In the end, the competition
was a close one, the final match being played between the Blue Team and Team Price; a thrilling final saw the Blue Team take
home the “Zaid Khasro Annual Trophy” for the first competition of what promises to be a yearly tradition for the College in
lasting memory of Zaid. The participation of the teams, the audience’s support and, of course, the effort of those who made the
event possible were greatly appreciated.
The Fundraising College Service Team 2011-2012
During the 2011-2012 academic year, our Development and Communications Office for the 2nd year had a group
of current students to help with the Annual Fund campaign. Their activities were focused on phoning alumni and
exchanging views on their respective experiences, inviting them to join the Annual Reunion, illustrating current
projects and activities taking place at the College, and also speaking about how they can help the college financially by
contributing towards the Annual Fund.
A new team will continue their excellent work in 2012-2013.

2011-2012 Academic Year
30 th Opening Ceremony
Students from 87 countries
O
n 12 December 2011, authorities and guests were welcomed to the auditorium by an expanse of colourful flags and
smiling faces, celebrating the Opening Ceremony of UWC Adriatic’s 30th Academic Year in Duino.
This Opening Ceremony was of particular importance as it was the last one with Prof. Peter Howe as Rettore of UWC Adriatic.
The Ceremony befittingly began with a performance by the students in their national costumes; the traditional “flag parade”
displaying the 87 countries which these 187 students would represent over the coming year at the College.
Peter Howe’s last address to the audience as the UWC Adriatic Rettore was to be the climax of the ceremony: as a sign of gratitude
for his dedication and passion for the College, as both teacher and Rettore, Peter Howe received gifts from the Friuli Venezia
Giulia Regional Minister of Education, Dr. Roberto Molinaro, and the President of UWC Adriatic, Amb. Gianfranco Facco Bonetti.
The Ceremony closed as Peter and his wife Sally were presented with two mountain bikes as a leaving gift from the entire UWC
Adriatic Community. Peter has since moved to the Netherlands, where he is now Headmaster of UWC Maastricht. The College
wishes Peter and his family all the best, and is very grateful for everything he has done during his time here in Duino.
“Without a doubt, working at UWC Adriatic has been one of the highlights of my life.
[...] A special thanks to my good friends and mentors Amb. Gianfranco Facco Bonetti
for his unwavering belief in me from day one of working together and Ragioniere
Giorgio Pontoni whose wise counsel on life and work I will always cherish. To my
colleagues – staff and teachers alike – I’m afraid I don’t really have the words to
capture my debt to you all. Your support, generosity and willingness to do what
needs to be done are exceptional and will never be forgotten. We have been through
a lot together. And finally a special thank you to you dear students. Your energy,
enthusiasm and idealism are the life-blood of this place. Particularly when they are
tempered with a dash of humility, a positive regard for others (even when you don’t
always see eye to eye) and the knowledge that your journey of self-discovery and
learning will never be complete (and reminding the adults of the community by your
example that the same is true for us as well). This is a very special place and it has been
my and my family’s great privilege to have lived and worked here. I hope you will all
feel the same way too when it is your time to leave. Thank you from the bottom of my
heart.”

The search for our new Rettore
Peace One Day 2011
E
very year, on 21 September, the United Nations promotes and
celebrates the “International Day of Peace and Ceasefire”. This year,
UWC Adriatic chose to commemorate the occasion in a very special way:
students, teachers and staff organised and participated in a wide range of
activities to analyse, discuss and explore their own perceptions of Peace.
A College Assembly took the place of usual morning classes followed by
an INA Conference held by Elizabeth Rehn, the former Minister of Defence
and Equity Affairs in the Finnish Government (1990 – 1995). Subsequently,
students, teachers and staff were invited to attend workshops to further
debate the idea of Peace.
“T
his academic year started with
a new challenge for the entire
UWC Adriatic community: the selection
of a new Rettore, following Peter Howe’s
departure for the Headship of UWC
Maastricht. The selection process started
last summer with the nomination of a
Search Committee consisting of: Amb. Gianfranco Facco Bonetti,
(President of UWC Adriatic); Dott.ssa
Patrizia Pavatti, (Director of Education,
University, Research of the Autonomus
Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia,
designated by the Regional Authorities);
Prof. Derek Blackman, (member of the
Council of Administration of our College
and former Vice-Chair of the UWC
International Board. Derek has lifelong
experience in the UWC movement
and has been involved, lately, in the
appointment of Heads of various UWC
Colleges); Prof. Henry Thomas, (Head of
World Arts and Cultures, UWC Adriatic
faculty senior member); Dott.ssa
Valentina Bach, UWC Adriatic alumna
(1989-91) and our current Director of
Development and Communications.
The committee, which represented key
constituencies both within and outside
the College community was assisted
from the outset by the professional
recruitment consultancy Heidrick &

Struggles. The decision to establish a
search committee and engage H&S
was taken to ensure the integrity and
transparency of the Rettore selection
process. With their long experience of
international recruitment H & S organised
the world-wide advertising for the post,
the receipt and the processing of all the
applications and supported the Search
Committee in short-listing candidates.
At the Search Committee’s third
meeting a final schedule was agreed,
with the application deadline of 31
October and final interviews to be held
by the end of February 2012. A total of
58 applications was received from which
emerged a short list of eight candidates
who were interviewed via video link
during January. In February, the four
finalists were invited with their spouses
to Duino for formal meetings with all the
major College constituents - teachers,
students and administrative staff – who
all had the opportunity to ask questions
and evaluate the candidate’s views and
approach to living and working at the
college. These groups all communicated
their views to the Search committee
who found them invaluable when they
conducted formal one hour and half
long interviews with each candidate.
At the end of this thorough process,
the Search Committee unanimously
recommended Dr. Michael Price, current
Acting Head, for the position of Rettore
at UWC Adriatic. With a BSc and PhD in
Zoology from the University of Leeds,
Mike began his career teaching Biology
in various schools in England before
becoming Head of Science at the British
International School in Jakarta. He then
worked in Buenos Aires and at the UWC
of South East Asia where he was Principal
of the High School and Deputy Head of
College. During the series of interviews
and presentations that each candidate
made, Mike scored very highly in all of
the key areas of educational leadership,
human leadership, technical/managerial
leadership, cultural leadership and
symbolic leadership. His commitment
and ideas impressed all members of the
Committee as well as the UWC Adriatic
constituencies. The UWC Adriatic
community is now working with Mike
to ensure a successful future for our
College and the mission it promotes.
I am sure you will join me and all the
College Community in wishing Mike
great success in his Rettoreship” .

During the afternoon, the UWC Adriatic Community moved to the Piazza
della Borsa in Trieste. With the support of the Municipality of Trieste, the
students organised and performed “Believe in Peace”: a show of dancing,
singing and acting interspersed with testimonies of students originating
from regions of conflict, which constituted some of the most moving
moments of the production. To close the show, the audience joined the
performers for a small “Peace March” from Piazza della Borsa to Piazza
Unità d’Italia, followed by a minute of silence.
“Peace One Day” concluded with a particularly meaningful act: 200 roses
were thrown into the sea in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia, as a gesture by
our students in order to remember those who attempted to escape from
conflict but lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea.
IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Udine
O
n 16 January 2012, a group of 18 students and staff
attended the Opening Ceremony of the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC) Skiing World Cup in Udine.
Accompanied by their national flags, the students gave a feeling
of home support for the courageous disabled skiers competing
for their country. We very much appreciate the efforts of Rimma
Rapoporte for organising and coordinating the trip and making
such an event possible.

ceremony was held to celebrate the installation of the College’s first
set of photovoltaic cell solar panels, opened with an introduction
by the former Rettore Peter Howe.
Further into the ceremony, UWC Adriatic’s sustainability group gave the
assembled college a short presentation on the scale of this achievement,
highlighting it as an institutional breakthrough for sustainable living at
the College, as they detailed the amount of electricity the panels were
expected to generate. In conjunction, a video was used to explain how
the panels worked, later contrasted with a light-hearted sketch by the
students to demonstrate the process of photons transforming into
electrons.
At the end of the presentation, the whole UWC Adriatic community
headed down to the Lucchese Residence where President, Amb.
Gianfranco Facco Bonetti, and Rettore, Peter Howe cut the inaugural
ribbon.
or the third year running, UWC Adriatic hosted a “Universities and Colleges Tour”, organised by David Fredrick as part of a
programme of visits, also involving the UWC campuses of Atlantic, Nordic, Maastricht and Mostar. The Dean of University
College Maastricht described our college as “a favourite stop” for the delegates who during the ‘tour’ represented 10 US, one
Canadian and one European university. After a short introduction to the 2nd year students, the delegates set up a ‘fair’ enabling
them to answer students’ questions relating to the various institutions and their application processes.
The following institutions were represented:
Agnes Scott; Bennington College; College of the Atlantic; Gettysburg College; Luther College; Methodist University; Princeton
University; Quest University; Ringling College of Art & Design; St. Olaf College; University College Maastricht; Wartburg College;
Westminster-MO
These are not the only university visits to UWC Adriatic this year. We also welcomed:
Colorado College; St. John’s College; Colby; Kenyon; Skidmore; Kalamazoo; Middlebury; Simon Fraser University; University of
Tokyo; Macalester College; Wellesley College; University of Chicago; Sciences Po.

very college of the UWC movement
requires their students to organise,
plan and carry out a ‘project week’.
Project week is an extension to the
community service activities that all
our students partake in on a weekly
basis, but the full week gives them the
opportunity to research and plan a more
personal project of their choice locally,
nationally or internationally. Although
it is not strictly necessary to include a
service during their week away, they
must carry out at least two types of
activities that correspond to the CAS
requirements of the IB: Creativity, Action
and Service.
This year, project week took place from
3 to 7 March; some of our students
travelled across Italy, others flew to the
UK, France, Switzerland and Germany,
whilst another group chose Romania. In
Italy, the projects covered a diverse range
of activities; volunteering in Rome’s
soup kitchens, a cultural exploration of
the different views of Italy’s northerners
UWC Adriatic, ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
and southerners in Sicily, performances
by our College’s musicians to a Sicilian
public, interaction with the local
community of Matera in southern
Italy and animal and environmental
voluntary work on the Sardinian coast.
A more action-based project week took
place in France; cross-country skiing
in the Jura Mountains, ending with
a visit to the International Olympic
Committee in Lausanne in Switzerland.
A contrastingly cultural visit to Paris was
made by another group of students,
whose aim was to promote the College
whilst visiting the city’s most popular
places. The project week group in
Munich had the chance to learn more
about the Holocaust as well as German
culture through their hosts, a Munich
family of musicians.
Students in the UK explored Newcastle,
guided by one of their native co-years;
they focused on children’s rights in
the region, as well as promoting the
UWC ethos in secondary schools. The
Romanian project week was a delight
for travel and culture lovers, as students
took the opportunity to observe the
language and people whilst discovering
four of the country’s most beautiful
cities. Project week is consistently
described as one of the highlights of
our students’ time at the College, as it
is an opportunity of a lifetime for many
African, American and Asian students
to discover the diversity of Europe. It is
also regularly cited by our alumni as a
fundamental part of their educational
experience.

Discovering “made in Friuli Venezia Giulia”
E
very year our students take part in the programme
<Discovering “made in Friuli Venezia Giulia”>
designed to introduce our students to Italy’s unique
heritage in terms of the Region’s excellent businesses
and industries. Last year, students visited the Calligaris
premises, one of the leading Italian home furnishing
companies, and Illycafè.
This year however, students also had the chance to visit
both the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone and the
Wärtsilä marine diesel engine factory in Trieste. The
visit to the Fincantieri shipyard gave the students the
opportunity to attend the launching of the “Carnival
Breeze”, the new flagship of the Carnival fleet.
In March 2012, our economics class visited the Wärtsilä
factory, where a detailed presentation was given by
alumna Erika Suerz (Italy, UWC Adriatic 1996 – 98),
now Wärtsilä’s Learning and Development Manager,
introducing the students to the corporate dimension
of the factory. As a global leader in complete lifecycle
power solutions for marine and energy markets, the huge
company provoked much interest amongst the students
during the Q&A session, followed by a tour of the factory’s
production sites.
Thanks to the success of these visits the College will
continue to extend the programme to involve other
centres of excellence in our Region.

MARIA BASHIR - Law as a tool to bring change in Afghanistan
O
n Friday 15 June 2012, in collaboration with the Tegreste section of BPW
(Business and Professional Women) - Italy and the Autonomous Region
of Friuli Venezia Giulia, we organized a highly sought-after and very successful
conference with Maria Bashir. Maria Bashir has been the only woman to be Chief
Prosecutor General in Afghanistan since 2006, specifically in the Herat Province.
With more than 15 years of experience in using legal means in fighting to defend
women’s civil rights during and after the Taliban domination in the country, her
speech conveyed her strong will, her passion for her job (or better mission), her
determination to change women’s and children’s rights, and her prospects for
the future of the country. Her
charisma captivated the hearts and minds of all the participants attending the
event, which was held in the prestigious Main Hall of the Friuli Venezia Giulia
Region building, overlooking the central Piazza Unità on the sea front in Trieste.
The topic of the meeting was “Law as a tool to bring change in Afghanistan”
and was widely attended by the local civil and military authorities, as well as by
BPW members, lawyers, and private citizens, resulting in a full house. The event
was followed by many journalists and received significant coverage in the local
media.
Dr. Alessandro Profumo meets UWC Adriatic Students
A
journey through personal history and economic considerations; this is how
Alessandro Profumo’s meeting with over 180 students at UWC Adriatic can be
summed up. In front of a young and multicultural audience of students aged 16 to
18, from over 80 countries, Dr. Profumo, President of the “Banca Monte dei Paschi di
Siena” and former president of “Unicredit”, made a clear analysis of the current economic situation in Europe with elements of autobiographical memories. Speaking
of the “Dangers and Opportunities in the Current Financial Situation” he brought
students and teachers to reflect on the current world economic situation and lead a
lively debate on today’s and tomorrow’s socio-economic situation.
Visit of the Italian Minister of the Environment
O
n 10 March 2012, Mr. Corrado Clini, Italian Minister for
the Environment, visited the College and participated
in a Conference held in the College Auditorium organised
by the Mayor of Duino-Aurisina to present two projects of
environmental restoration in Duino, funded by the Ministry.
Valentina Bach, our Director of Development and
Communications welcomed the Minister and the guests with
a brief resumé of our College, its history and its initiatives.
Immediately after her speech, two of our students: Onur Unal
(2010-12 from Turkey) and Alaa “Lulu” Badr (2010-12 from
Egypt) greeted the authorities on behalf of the 187 current

experiences here in Duino.
During his speech, Mr. Corrado Clini thanked UWC Adriatic
for having agreed to host the Conference and remarked how
special the village of Duino is, as a cultural crossroad of Italian,
Slovene and Austrian heritage highlighted by the values of
UWC Adriatic.
At the end of the Conference, Onur and Lulu asked the Minister
to sign and leave a comment in the College Guest Book,
inaugurated by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. “Sustainable, Nice,

It is our great pleasure and honour to present the UWC Adriatic Class of 2012
O
n 23 May 2012, 89 students
from 64 countries graduated in
front of an audience of more than 400
people: the 30th UWC Adriatic Closing
Ceremony honoured the College’s
“secondi” (our second year students) in
a commemoration of their achievement
in completing their IB Diploma. The
Ceremony was a celebration, although
at times tinged with the sadness of
farewells and our loss during the year,
as the graduating students commence
their new lives across the globe.
The UWC Adriatic Class of 2012 was
treated to a ceremony of musical
performances, awards and speeches on
Foresteria Lawn, given by the Rettore,
Dr. Michael Price, the President of UWC
Adriatic, Amb. Gianfranco Facco Bonetti
and a special contribution by Joseph
Samucha, current student at the College.
As Mike’s first Closing Ceremony as
Rettore, during his speech he thanked
the UWC Adriatic Community as well
as the Region and sponsors for their
continuing support ensuring the
survival and existence of the College.
Key events of the last academic year
were also mentioned: the tragic loss of
16

a student, Zaid Khasro in the summer
of 2011 and his memorial football
competition in March; the creation of
the College’s Jazz Band by talented
musicians of the College and finally the
Rilke Poetry Evening held at the Castle
in April: a showcase of our most gifted
readers and musicians.
The President’s inspirational address
followed, emphasizing Kurt Hahn’s
original mission as the founder of
the UWC movement. He also made
special mention and gave thanks to the
College’s former Rettore, Peter Howe,
who was also present for the Ceremony,
as well as highlighting UWC Adriatic’s
need for the ongoing support of alumni,
including the 2012 Class. The President
also thanked Prof. Henry Thomas, who
retired at the end of the year, for his
contribution to the College over the
years as developer of the World Arts and
Cultures course for the IB.
Several awards were also presented
during the ceremony: the “Fondazione
CRTrieste Prize for the promotion of
the Italian language in the world” was
awarded to Roberto Drilea (Romania),
Francisco Diaz (Uruguay), Lucie
Rehakova (Czech Republic), Maja Sipek
(Slovenia) and Nancy Jiang (Singapore)
as a special recognition of the efforts
and dedication of these non-native
Italian students who have distinguished
themselves in the language during
their time at the College. Other prizes
included the “Maurizio Esposito”
Photography Award, presented by Prof.
Angelo Friolo and Max Paoli and ‘The
Harvard Club Book Prize’ presented
by Dr. Michael Price on behalf of Mary
Myers.
Following an interlude by the UWC
Adriatic Singers, Joseph Samucha,
a continuing student of the College
addressed the recent graduates,
recalling his first year in Duino and the
important role the “secondi” played to
him and his fellow first years embarking
their IB. His address was testament
to the strong bond connecting all our
students no matter what their age, life
experiences or nationality; perhaps
just one of the many goals of a UWC
education. UWC Adriatic would like to
wish the Class of 2012 all the best in
whatever they choose to do.

“Premio alla bontà Hazel Marie Cole” award

students from UWC Adriatic received the “Premio alla Bontà Hazel Marie Cole” award which provides them with pocket
money for the year.
The award ceremony took place on 14 November 2011 in the College Auditorium. Over 110 students from UWC Adriatic have
received this award, now in its 12th year. The award was instituted by Dr. Aldo Pianciamore in memory of his wife, Hazel Marie
Cole Pianciamore. The prizes were distributed by Dr. Aldo Pianciamore in the presence of the College Rettore, prof. Peter T. Howe.
The ceremony was opened by past award recipient and UWC Adriatic alumnus Bat-Erdene Batbileg from Mongolia (2008-2010),
who is currently studying at the Conservatory in Trieste.
In his introduction, Peter highlighted the significant importance of this award, amounting to 400 euro per person, conferred
to students from particularly difficult backgrounds and who do not have sufficient economic means to cover even their own
minimal personal requirements. Thanks to this contribution, the prize-recipients can improve their quality of life for their two
years in Duino.
In addressing the students, Dott. Pianciamore underlined the fact that the importance of the award is not the direct economic
benefit but lies in the message it wishes to convey: that the world is not just bad news, but also kindness.
Dott. Pianciamore concluded by saying he hoped the prize would be an inspiration for other similar acts of generosity.

Netbook donations to UWC Adriatic students
D
uring the third year of her ‘Netbook Project’ for our College, Mary Myers has personally donated seven laptop computers
(‘netbooks’) to seven of our students.
The netbooks were awarded to the students during a ceremony following the Winter break.
Mary’s campaign for our College’s ‘Netbook Project’ was launched in 2009 with the help and support of the Harvard Club of Italy,
of which she is a member, being a Harvard graduate herself (1990). Candidates to receive a netbook are those whose financial
backgrounds would otherwise prevent them from having access to a laptop computer. The project was born out of the Havard
Club of Italy’s mission to promote and recognize academic excellence at secondary school level in Italy.

UWC Adriatic welcomes five Institutions among its recent donors
The College would like to thank Mary for her continued support in this project, which over three years has provided 20
students with access to a laptop computer who would otherwise have gone without.

““We are excited to celebrate our union and 13 years of partnership this August in Donsö,
Sweden. Having met on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic in 1999 and having each enjoyed
two unforgettable years in Duino and the remarkable institution that is the United World
College of the Adriatic, we couldn’t think of a better gift than to help give a new generation the
wonderful experience we were so very fortunate to receive. Thank you for your generosity and
for supporting this outstanding organization””
aren Morris (Hong Kong, UWC Adriatic 1987-89) and Johannes Natterer (Germany, UWC Adriatic 1987-89) arrived like
many other teenagers at UWC Adriatic in the autumn of 1987, full of expectations and pride that comes with being
selected to represent one’s country. What they perhaps did not expect to find was love during their time together at the college
and love lost when they returned to their home countries following graduation to pursue their respective studies and careers.
But as with the many seeds that were planted during the two years of the UWC Adriatic experience, the seeds of love came back.
After many years apart, the two chanced to meet again and realized that their bond remained as strong as ever and deserved
and demanded a future together.
Their shared love of Italy led to the selection of the wedding location at Florentine vineyard Il Borro that Karen (known
internationally as Karen Mok) had discovered through a photo shoot for the fashion company Ferragamo. Former classmates,
friends and family joined the couple under the Tuscan sun to celebrate their nuptials on 1 October 2011 in the chapel of the
vineyard.
UWC Adriatic is honoured that Karen and Johannes requested that donations to the College be made in lieu of wedding gifts in
recognition of the profound impact their time at UWC Adriatic had on their lives.
Our sincere thanks to them and their 32 guests who took up the invitation and donated a total of
€ 26.887,60 – sufficient to provide more than one full scholarship to a future student for one year!
While we cannot guarantee such fairytale endings in the future to our students, we have no doubt that love and learning
go hand in hand in realizing our mission to make education a force to unite peoples, nations and cultures for peace and a
sustainable future.

F
ollowing the heartening encouragement we have received from our initial steps, we launched
the 2011-12 Annual Fund Campaign with a new feature, the UWC Adriatic Alumni Annual Fund
Challenge. Every donation of € 1,000 or more received from UWC Adriatic Alumni would be doubled
in value thanks to the matching committment of the Annual Fund Committee.
Gift matching is a powerful way to engage alumni in a collective effort to enhance the College’s
fundraising efforts. For the first time in our 30-year history, a group of four UWC Adriatic Alumni
joined forces to challenge the rest of the alumni community in a gift-matching fundraising operation
for the College. Thanks to the personal commitment of the Annual Fund Challenge Committee,
25 alumni (and partners) accepted the challenge in an overall achievement of 69,000 Euro!
THE ANNUAL FUND CHALLENGE COMMITTEE
The Annual Fund Challenge Committee is a group of leaders who, together, challenged other UWC
Adriatic alumni to increase their annual gifts to support College operations and strengthen the
school to fulfill its mission for generations to come. For the 2011-12 Annual Fund Campaign, the
pioneer Annual Fund Challenge Committee members were:
Giuliano Giovannetti (Italy, UWC Adriatic 1984-86)
Pål Ristvedt (Norway, UWC Adriatic 1986-88)

T
his past year, together with the Annual Fund Campaign and the Alumni Challenge, our Development Office also followed
another important Campaign: the Italian Challenge 2011-2012, a campaign launched in collaboration with the Network
of Italian UWC alumni
Thanks to the matching commitment of a generous Italian alumnus,
we were able to raise 45,800 € for the first Scholarship totally financed by Italian Alumni.
The campaign was met with enthusiasm and was a great success and allowed Benedetto to join the UWC Community.
Performing art as a means to share the UWC mission and values with the local community

Reunion 2012 - Time to Give Back Campaign :
Reunion 2012 - The ‘92 Duino Society:
€5,238.00 raised so far
€7.507,72 raised in 2011-12
Conscious of their responsibility as graduates to give back, contributing to the legacy of the college and helping other
students have the same opportunity of attending UWC Adriatic that they had, the 2000-02 generation launched their “Time to
Give Back” campaign to celebrate their 10-year Reunion in June 2012.
The objective was to use their reunion as a starting point to set up recurrent/monthly affordable donations and set the
example for more ex-students to join in and thereby boost the percentage of regular alumni donors.
So far, 31 alumni from the 2000-02 generation (with the support of some of their primi or secondi who also came to the
reunion) have joined this recurring donation campaign. A further 13 opted for a single donation as their Reunion Gift.
Following the 2012 Reunion, a group of alumni from the 1990-92 Generation are promoting a scheme to give back to future
generations. The objective is for the ‘92 Duino Society to donate 21,500 Euro every year to fund a student at the college,
starting in September 2012.
The 90-92 generation will share this objective with their first years (91-93 generation) who have agreed to join in to
commemorate their 20th graduation anniversary which will take place in June 2013.
The members of the society are UWC Adriatic Alumni of the 1990-92 generation who decide to contribute to the Annual Fund
following one of these options : 1) Euro 1,000 annual
2) Euro 500 annual
3) Two people donating Euro 250 annual each, as a joint contribution.
There have been many successful fundraising initiatives that have arisen from reunions in the past and this one is a step
forward in providing structured and sustained support for the College over time. In announcing their scheme, the 1990-92
generation expressed their intention for this scholarship drive to be an inspiration for other generations to follow, so as to
create a consolidated network of alumni giving.
