Dear friends of UWC Adriatic
W
elcome to the UWC Adriatic 2012-2013 Annual Report. It provides a rich
pictorial summary of the highlights of the past year and acknowledges the
invaluable support we have received from our alumni and friends. 2012-2013 was a year of
celebration and sadness. The college celebrated 30 years of existence as the UWC movement
celebrated its 50th anniversary. The photographs in this document give you an impression
of the colour and vitality of the celebrations – both at the opening ceremony and the Teatro
Verdi book presentation and student show, but only those of us fortunate enough to have
been present could experience the joy and vitality of the show and the majesty and reflection
of the opening ceremony. Sadness followed these events when Giorgio Pontoni, who had
been deeply, personally involved in establishing UWC Adriatic, died unexpectedly.
Dr. Michael Price
His contributions to UWC Adriatic will be remembered for years to come.
The generosity of different individuals and institutions involved in the college in different
roles – patrons, donors, administrators, students, teachers, alumni - demonstrates
Rettore, UWC Adriatic
their faith in the mission and values of the college. Our continued existence as an all
scholarship intercultural experience is thanks to the continued and significant generosity
of our Patrons, The FVG Region and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These
contributions are generously augmented by scholarships from our private and corporate
donors who have chosen to support young people selected by UWC National Committees
through the opportunity of a UWC education. We have benefited in recent years from the
determined fundraising of UWC National Committees around the world whose members
understand the value of a UWC Adriatic experience and so they have sought to contribute
to scholarships thus helping students from their countries to attend the college. This support
has been extremely helpful for the college. Lastly, but by no means least, we are particularly
grateful to the alumni who make financial gifts which cannot always be easy to find with all
the other demands on limited personal funds. You are making it possible for us to offer other

young people the chance of a life-changing opportunity that would not have been available
to them by other means. Alumni-giving is a hugely rewarding and confirmatory model for
UWC Adriatic financial sustainability. It is long-term, direct feedback for the college that it
President, UWC Adriatic
is meeting its aspirations to provide an unforgettable, positive student experience by offering
an education to a deliberately diverse group of students who can go on from Duino to have
a lasting influence on peace and a sustainable future for the world.
Yours faithfully

Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in which, due to its history and geographical position, the three great cultures of Europe have always met and
enhanced each other: the Latin, German and Slavic cultures. A region, therefore, that has always had a marked vocation for international
relations. It is precisely for this reason that in 1982 the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia took up with firm belief the proposal to set
up a United World College in Duino, and it has never failed to provide support in its thirty years of activity.
The Region has always considered the presence of UWC Adriatic in Duino as an investment in youth. In a land such as ours, which has lived
through some of the most tragic pages of Europe’s history, the educational model of the United World Colleges has, since the very outset,
represented a hope: young students as a strong force to unite people, nations and cultures to build peace and a sustainable future.
Debora Serracchiani, President of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia

In memory of ...
Giorgio Pontoni
T
his year, UWC Adriatic suffered a truly tragic loss. On March 26th, Giorgio Pontoni,
the College’s devoted Secretary General, sadly passed away. He had spent his entire
professional life working for the College in various different capacities, since 1974 - before
it was even born. He will be greatly missed by all those who met him.
As the College’s first Director of Administration, he was tireless and essential in the birth
of UWC Adriatic, committing everything to overcoming all obstacles and realising a
vision of the College that survives to this day. His deep conviction that any barrier could
be overcome was rooted in his love of the region and in his deep religious faith, and
this conviction and positivity was transmitted to all who met him, while his genius was
invaluable in surmounting the legal and administrative problems that the College faced.
After 13 years of service to the College, Giorgio returned to the Regional Administration of
Friuli Venezia Giulia for a time, until the College asked for his help with the accounting of a
community project in 2006; despite his recent retirement, his involvement in the College
Rag. Giorgo Pontoni
only grew from there and his experience in all areas was a great boon to all. In 2008, Giorgio
became the College’s Secretary General, forsaking other opportunities in order to dedicate himself to the College that he loved
so much, a great source of happiness for him, and the College as it is today owes him a great debt for the administrative and
institutional relationships he established, for the role he played in ensuring the College’s survival in difficult economic times,
and for the personal relationships he held with so many College employees; these ensure that he will never be truly absent from
the College he was so vital in creating, or from the people that populate it.
The funeral took place in Gorizia, Chiesa di Sant’Anna, on Tuesday 2nd April. Giorgio is survived by his daughter Elisabetta and
his beloved grandson Paolo, but is reunited once more with his dear wife Gianna. His legacy will long continue to protect and
serve the College, as demonstrated by the College President’s words at the Closing Ceremony for the academic year: “Defining
him irreplaceable is not an hyperbolic statement. It is just a fair assessment of the contribution he made to the foundation and
development of the Adriatic.”
“A person’s death is always an unfathomable tragedy for all those left behind. Even more so if the deceased was loved, respected
and admired as is the case of the person we are accompanying in his last, brief stretch of his passage on earth... A tragedy for all
and every one of us who had the rare privilege of knowing and loving him.”
“The fraternal friendship that united me with Giorgio over a lifetime allowed me to see his noble soul in its most concealed folds.
I soon realized that he combined an exemplary sense of duty with a rare moral rectitude, that he cultivated in both his private
and professional life, a lively and intuitive intelligence, profound honesty, and lastly, a profound sense of humanity that clearly
emerged from an innate kindness as well as from an illuminating and solid religious faith, in which he grew up from his early
years and which accompanied him until the end of his earthly days.”

2012-2013 Academic Year
30 th Anniversary Celebrations
2
012 represented an important milestone both for UWC Adriatic and the UWC movement as a whole. In a year of twin
anniversaries, we celebrated half a century since the foundation of the UWC movement in Wales in 1962, and 30 years since
the establishment of our college in Duino in 1982.
The former Italian Minister of Education, Prof. Francesco Profumo surrounded by students during his visit to the College.
Celebrations began on the 19th-21st of September 2012, but continued throughout the academic year.
The 19th of September saw a visit from the former Italian Minister of Education, Prof. Francesco Profumo. After a day of speaking
and joking with the students, Prof. Profumo conveyed his admiration for the outstanding multicultural community fostered at
UWC Adriatic and, before returning to Rome, expressed his gratitude to the teaching and administrative staff for the
“life-changing experience” that they offer to the leaders of tomorrow.

On the following day the celebrations continued with a visit by the UWC Adriatic community to the “Ara Pacis Mundi” in Medea,
where the College’s 31st Academic Year was opened with the traditional display of colourful flags from 88 countries, representing
every continent. On the way to the monument, respects were paid at the Italian Military Sacrary and the Austro-Hungarian
Cemetery of Redipuglia, in memory of the young who died during the First World War.
The three-day celebrations drew to a close on Friday 21st September, Peace One Day. For the second time, the College
community celebrated this UN International Day of Ceasefire in Piazza della Borsa in Trieste, with an impressive display of flags
and international songs and dances.

30 th Anniversary Celebrations
A
fter the three days in September 2012, celebrations continued on 15th March, 2013 with a special evening called “Uniting
then and now”, organized at the historical and prestigious “Teatro Lirico Giusppe Verdi” in Trieste. The special evening was
divided in two parts: a talk-show to celebrate the most important figures of our College’s first 30 years and the “Uniti nell’arte”
show performed by current students.
The talk-show, led by alumnus, actor and journalist Janko Petrovec (Slovenia, UWC Adriatic 1988-90) focused on the founding
figures of both the UWC movement and UWC Adriatic. During the talk Janko was joined by Dr. Michael Price and Ambassador
Gianfranco Facco Bonetti, current Rettore and President of the College. Later on Arrigo Levi, Life Patron of the College and
Antonin Besse, Honorary Vice-President of the UWC Movement, also joined the talk. Last but not least, David Sutcliffe, founding
Rettore of the College, and alumnus Yves Aka (Ivory Coast, UWC Adriatic 1985-88) joined the session for the final part.

Speakers at the “Uniting then and now” evening at the Verdi theatre.
During their discussion the speakers highlighted the importance of education as a means to change and transform the world
and concluded with a tribute to On. Corrado Belci, founding President of the College, who passed away on 3rd May, 2011.
Corrado Belci’s determination and dedication were essential to the foundation and the establishment of the Adriatic College
during its first years. After the talk-show , our students put on their “Uniti nell’arte” performance, produced entirely by them, to
share the values of brotherhood and friendship animating UWC Adriatic with the audience. The colourful show was a perfect
example of how the College promotes mutual understanding and dialogue among different cultures.

La Scuola dei Sogni
On 23rd April, MTV Italia News aired a special hour-long
documentary about UWC Adriatic, featuring as protagonists
five of the College's Italian students. Shot exclusively in the
college and around Duino during September to November of
2012, the documentary was entitled La Scuola dei Sogni and
focussed on the messages of peace, international cooperation
and cultural understanding that characterise the UWC
Colleges.
Praising the way in which students are trained to be useful
Interviewing Silvia, one of the protagonists of the MTV documentary
in society and selected not only on academic potential
but also on a commitment to doing good in the world, the
documentary followed five Italian students. Through them
and their interactions with other students, the special told
the story of the unique, multicultural nature of UWC Adriatic,
as well as showcasing the broad range of talents represented
here, from parkour and juggling to acting, and from an interest
in medicine to playing in a rock band. If you missed the special,
you can still watch it on our YouTube channel, at:

Filming students during a lunch break on the Rilke path
Being filmed for a few days hasn't been easy: once I spent too much time explaining a typical college morning
to the camera and then I had to run to class and ended up being late for Maths; but as a result of the special, our
thoughts and messages are being delivered to many people who didn't even know UWC existed beforehand,
which is uniquely satisfying."

n the 9th-11th September of this
academic year, 2 staff members
and 9 students travelled to Sarajevo
on behalf of UWC Adriatic to attend
an International Event entitled ‘Living
together is the Future - Religions and
Cultures in Dialogue’. This assembly of
different religions, nations and cultures
in the name of peace was conceived
by Pope John Paul II in Assisi in 1986,
and has been an annual event ever
since, organised by the Community of
Sant’Egidio. UWC Adriatic attended as
part of the official delegation from the
Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, chosen by
the Region as a real-world manifestation
of the event’s ideals: bringing together
people from throughout the world in
peaceful harmony. The College was an
audience to many significant religious
figures, including the leaders of the
Christian and Muslim communities in
the Balkan region, and over the three
days attended plenary sessions and
workshops put on throughout the city
in various schools, universities and
other cultural institutions. The students
thoroughly enjoyed the event, thoughtprovoking and moving as it was, and
both its existence and their presence
at it are an encouraging demonstration
of the Region’s and the College’s
commitment to peace throughout the
world.

Ing. Carlo de Benedetti donates a full scholarship
On 19th March, the engineer, industrialist and publisher Ing. Carlo De Benedetti paid a visit to UWC Adriatic to run an International
Affairs session entitled ‘Europe Must Step Up To The Challenge’. In this highly ‘international’ setting of almost 200 students from
88 different countries around the world, he spoke about the situation in and the future of Europe, offering ideas about what has
already been accomplished and what challenges still remain.
Discussion was opened to the floor and continued afterwards in a smaller group of students from Armenia, Austria, Iraq, Italy,
Jordan, Poland, Serbia and USA, and, saying that he was amazed by the ethos of the College and by the students’ ability and
commitment to the important issues of the day, he decided to donate a scholarship for the next academic year to a student
from South Sudan. The smaller discussion group had focused attention on the political, social and economic states of various
countries, and the decision to donate the scholarship to South Sudan was based on their discussion of which country, in difficult
economic conditions, deserved it most.

“Premio alla bontà Hazel Marie Cole” award
T
his year saw the 13th iteration of the ‘Premio alla Bontà Hazel Marie
Cole’, an award which provides students with pocket money for
the year. The award was instituted by Dr. Aldo Pianciamore in memory
of his wife, Hazel Marie Cole Pianciamore, and has now benefited over
120 students from UWC Adriatic. Dr. Pianciamore and Marquise Etta
Carignani, the Secretary General and President of the Foundation,
presented this year’s 12 students with the awards.
Those selected for the award are students from particularly difficult
backgrounds who do not have the economic means to sufficiently cover
their own minimal personal requirements, and thanks to the pocket
money provided, they can improve the quality of life they lead here in
Duino for two years. The award is not just of economic benefit, however,
but is a reminder that the world contains kindness and generosity, one
that Dr. Pianciamore hopes will be an inspiration for other, similar acts
of generosity.

Mary Myers donates netbooks to UWC Adriatic
M
ary Myers donated laptop computers (netbooks) to three of our students in the 4th year of
the “College Netbook Project” . The netbooks were awarded to the students during a ceremony
just before the Winter break.
Mary’s commitment to UWC Adriatic began in 2009 when, thanks to her link with the Harvard Club
of Italy, we were able to establish the Project, which aims to provide netbooks to students whose
financial backgrounds would otherwise prevent them from having access to a laptop computer.
The College would like to thank Mary for her continued support in this project, which over four
years has provided more than 20 students with a fondamental element for their education.

Reunion 2013 - Time to Give Back
Reunions are not only an anniversary celebration but also represent an important moment for our alumni to reflect on the
value of the two-year experience they lived in Duino. Alumni giving is playing an increasingly important role in the College
development and Reunions are an opportunity to engage our graduates and commit them to give back.
The 1986-88 Generation group during the 2013 UWC Adriatic Alumni Reunion
2001-03 Generation Gift :
The 2001-03 Generation decided to use their ten-year reunion to increase their level of participation in the Annual Fund
Campaign, both through single donations as well as using the on-line recurring gift option.
The result was that, compared to the previous year, the number of their co-years donating and the total amound raised has not
only increased but has indeed tripled!
It is encouraging to see such support from young alumni who are completing their studies or just starting out on their careers
and we are confident we can build on this commitment!

1990-92 & 1991-93 Generation Scholarship:
In June 2012, following their 20th Anniversary Reunion, a group of alumni from the 1990-92 Generation promoted a campaign
to give back to future generations. This year, the 1991-93 Generation joined them to achieve a collective goal of raising a
Scholarship to fund a student at the college, starting in September 2013.
By the end of august 2013, at the close of our Fiscal Year, the Campaign had raised 25,000 €
Pooja Nikalje from India is now attending her first year at UWC Adriatic thanks to this result!
The 1990-92 and 1991-93 generations have expressed their hope that this scholarship drive will be an inspiration for other
generations to follow, so as to create a consolidated network of alumni giving.
“Before I came here, people did not want to talk to me because I was poor. When I was selected for the College I thought
it would have been the same, but it is not. Here everyone is so nice! I am making friends and everybody talks to me and
try to understand what I want to say. They are helping me a lot in improving my English and gaining confidence. I am
very grateful to be here, where people come from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. This is an amazing
opportunity to me, that I have never been outside of my country.I would really, really like to thank the Alumni who gave
me this opportunity, so as I can explore new cultures, meet new people and improve my education. I will do my best
to fully live this experience and make really good moments and memories that will be with me forever and I will never
forget. Thank you all so much for making it possible!”"

Annual Fund 2012-13 results :
We are extremely pleased to announce that thanks to 358 committed friends,
the 2012-2013 Annual Fund has raised over 260,000 Euro, 47% more than the year before!
This fantastic result has enabled us to complete the scholarships for the 7 students admitted thanks to last year’s campaign
and to take in 4 new first years, two of whom funded through the dedicated Italian challenge.
A total of 11 alumni-funded scholarships!
This has been made possible thanks to the support of our alumni community, and the Annual Fund Challenge Committee in
particular, who doubled all donations of 1,000 Euro or more.

Our Donors
I find it difficult to describe the UWC movement. Maybe the main
reason for it lies in the fact that it is based on certain values, which
are quite rare today, such as courage and noble-mindedness. We all
have a specific, life-changing moment on our ‘’timeline’’, and I am sure
that each and every UWC student will consider his/her experience
as something remarkable... And it is only the beginning of your life
journey! If you make the most of these 2 years you will have many
reasons for happiness. I am really grateful for being part of UWC,
They gave me a chance to develop a personality that will look for the
flowers in the hair, not diamonds around the neck

Stories of Donations
The Italian Challenge 2012-13
F
ollowing the heartening responce received last year, our Development Office together with the Association of Italian
UWC alumni, decided to renew the Challenge with a more ambitious target: to fund two full Italian scholarships!
Thanks to the increased matching commitment of a generous Italian alumnus, the Challenge raised 86.000 €
This result allowed the 1st and 2nd ranked students of the Italian Selection to join the UWC Community.
a partecipare a quest’iniziativa.
Basta poco, ma tutti assieme possiamo veramente fare la differenza! Rimango anonimo perché questa è una vostra
vittoria, e tale deve rimanere. Vi abbraccio con nostalgia, affetto ed emozione”
*Nota: il riferimento e’ al documentario “La Scuola dei Sogni” trasmesso da MTV Italia.

One year ago I didn’t know
what UWC was. I didn’t
expect that I would get a
chance to study abroad. I
couldn’t imagine that I would
ever meet people from all
around the world.
And here I am. I speak
English (sometimes even
dream in English). I do
biology experiments, I go to
opera, I dance Russian dance
and sing in a choir, I knit
with the elderly and practice
Italian. I talk about current
political situation in Mexico
with real Mexicans, I taste
African food and share Polish
sweets with a pinch of history.
My life has turned 360
degrees. Or even more.
Everything thanks to YOU.
