Siamo contro l’ignoranza». When there's no future How can there be sin We're the flowers in the dustbin We're the poison in your human machine We're the future, your future 6 Malcom McLaren intervistato da Claude Bessy <<New Music News >> il 10 maggio 1980. 18 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile God save the queen We mean it man We love our queen God saves God save the queen We mean it man And there is no future In England's dreaming Quando non c’è nessun futuro Come può esistere il peccato? Quelle cose sbagliate esistono ancora e i Clash no. Questo che significa? We don't need no education We don’t need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone! All in all it's just another brick in the wall. - D.I.Y. (aggettivo): acronimo di "Do It Yourself". Go For Labour" . I The Smiths cantavano: Past the Pub who saps your body And the church who'll snatch your money The Queen is dead, boys And it's so lonely on a limb Past the Pub that wrecks your body And the church - all they want is your money 31 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile The Queen is dead, boys Passato il Pub che indebolisce il vostro corpo E la chiesa che strappa via i vostri soldi La Regina è morta, ragazzi E siamo così vulnerabili Passato il Pub che distrugge il vostro corpo E la chiesa che tutto ciò che vuole è il vostro denaro La Regina è morta, i ragazzi 13 Dopo l’atteggiamento autodistruttivo dell’ epoca punk, molti giovani considerarono i New Romantics una ventata di aria fresca. 52 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile ENGLISH SESSION The evolution of communication among young people. After the Second World War young generations stared to define and give way to a controversy by living the way they wanted through music and art in order to change the course of history. This culture of contestation was particularly strong in the United States and Europe with provocateur, offbeat and sometimes aggressive behaviour. They rejected their society, accused of flattening man and sold everything, even art and thought. Non-verbal communication created through all forms of art and music has created a communication channel, which is authentic and unfiltered or uncensored. The underground culture developed within the society of advanced capitalism at a time when the industry was under strong cultural transformation for the development of the means of mass communication; in response to these changes the underground culture proposed an alternative use of the same means of communication thus spreading the way and the principles of life that were different from those proposed or imposed. By extension, the definition of underground culture was later used to indicate several alternative sub cultural networks (punk, cyberpunk, alternative hip hop, etc.). 54 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Counterculture is the culture and lifestyle of those who, especially among young people, reject or oppose the dominant values and behaviour of society. With the definition of counterculture we can clearly understand the meaning of these youth movements that particularly characterized the Western world since the end of the Second World War. They begin to have a key role in society and an attitude of protest against an institutionalized culture or knowledge that required standardized values and cultural models, with the goal of a different understanding of life. Therefore the world they lived in and their limits were no longer a barrier but the aim to move forward and look ahead. The diversity and the uniqueness of these youth cultural movements did not consider the prevailing culture which provided essential motivations to their generation important. They were real landmarks of counter-culture that gave way to the most important movements of our history, from rock to the hippie movement, from punk to the greatest revolutionary youth movements. Art and music became a powerful media tool for a peaceful but effective protest. After World War II began the first movement of excellence: the Beat Generation. The Beat Generation was the first movement to develop in a time when military training during the time of peace was a daily reality that analyzed the daily behaviour of the individual, and the first generation that grew up in a world in which the solution to all problems seemed to be only one: nuclear destruction. The reaction was unique and obvious and led to revolution, dissent and the willingness to fight for themselves, to discover inner truths and to fight the falsity of the adult generations. They demonstrated against the war in Vietnam and against racial segregation of blacks by strongly rejecting materialism and imposed 55 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile rules. They valued without prejudice individuals and human values. Later, in the early '60s there was another movement called the Hippie Movement, inspired by the Beat Generation. Hippies or flower children were for peace and freedom and their mottos were "Put some flowers in your guns" and "Make love, not war", during the Vietnam War when there was uncertainty about the future on which the danger of nuclear war weighed upon. The unbridled pursuit of total freedom was the meaning of their lifestyle. The hippie fashion and values have had a significant impact on culture influencing music, movies and art. Another reference to the ‘60s is Bob Dylan, the singer and songwriter that was the key figure of the American protest movement. We are referring to the '60s when in the United States there was an economic boom, a consumer society and powerful industries that lead to a mass market and a great impact on consumerism. At that time John F. Kennedy was elected the first Catholic president at the helm of the United States. There was the birth of the peace movement against the Vietnam War and the struggle for civil rights for blacks and Bob Dylan participated in the March of Washington where Martin Luther King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. One of Dylan’s most important songs, Blowing in the Wind, became one of the hymns for civil rights which repudiated any kind of war. Counterculture is a phenomenon that developed in the ‘50s and affected and influenced culture and everything related to art and music. During this time young people looked for ways to create their own dimension going against established rules and values that often deny and ignore their creativity and their importance. In this way laid down a solid foundation for future generations. 56 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile “Anyone who knows history, particularly the history of Europe, will, I think, recognize that the domination of education or of government by any one particular religious faith is never a happy arrangement for the people.” Eleanor Roosevelt. 57 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile First chapter I.1 The 1970s in England In the second half of the 70s, there was one of the worst economic crises in the history of England, which led the country to bankruptcy. The government was forced to negotiate credits provided by the IMF (International Monetary Fund), which intervened by imposing strict controls on domestic spending. These factors led to the defeat of the Labour government and the victory of the conservatives with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in May 1979. The policy of Thatcher’s government gave way to the cancellation of the welfare state and, to overcome the crisis, the government resorted to drastic measures creating havoc among the population. Unemployment was at its highest peak, there were no opportunities and facilities for young people, schools and neighbourhoods were abandoned, greatly degraded and there was violence particularly among the poorer social classes. The reaction of the young people was strong and in direct proportion to their social situation. Not only were they demonstrating against the system, but also against the monarchy and the English bourgeoisie, who became rich off the backs of the poorest people. Punk was their reaction to all this chaos. Most of them were teenagers or young people in their early twenties who lived at home with their parents and felt alienated and lost. Through newspapers and television they internalized racism and a reactionary ideology from their parents. They did not know to express themselves; they were poorly educated and unable to give form to their feelings so they fought to create their own language that would allow them to face this particular situation. The way they dressed, their way of living and 58 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile their music allowed them to communicate at a time of severe economic crisis, which was also characterized by a lack of values, ideas and creativity. Punk was not only a violent movement, but a powerful weapon to stimulate young people to do something for themselves. Johnny Rotten said “Listen, you know this: If there's not a rebellious youth culture, there's no culture at all. It's absolutely essential. It is the future. This is what we're supposed to do as a species, that is advance ideas.” The Sex Pistols and The Clash were two of the most influential bands during the punk years. The Clash were able to reach a wide audience and managed to convey political messages and to make the best of punk as a means of political change. Songs like Career Opportunities, I'm So Bored with the USA and London's Burning give an idea of the goals they wanted to achieve and the message they contained. For example in Career Opportunities they claimed there was a lack of jobs. Career opportunities are the ones that never knock Every job they offer you is to keep out the dock Career opportunities, the ones that never knock The Sex Pistols were not politically involved, but they still conveyed a political message through their behavior. Punk was able to change the lives of many people, Malcolm McLaren, record producer and musician as well as "creator of the band the Sex Pistols, declared ‘I considered myself more a person ultimately concerned in driving as many people wild as possible with the hope of creating some kind of different social outlook on kids’ lives. To give them potential for them to 59 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile realize that they are important and give them a critique in which they can then direct their energies’. The Sex Pistols tried to rework the issues of nationality in an era when the queues for the dole stretched and England had not yet abandoned the "English dream." The Union Jack became part of the iconography of the Sex Pistols, which with the song God Save the Queen made a real anthem of a generation with no future and no perspective. The message of the song was really strong and direct since it came from a generation who lived on the street and saw no future. The original title of the song was in fact, No Future. Below are some of the lyrics to the song. When there's no future How can there be sin We're the flowers in the dustbin We're the poison in your human machine We're the future, your future God save the queen God save the queen We mean it man And there is no future In England's dreaming Punk was not a religion or a political party and there was no manifesto or agreed platform. McLaren said ‘The greatest thing, the most amazing thing that I was consciously and certainly part of, and certainly helped create, was this do-it-yourself movement. See, the 60 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile greatest thing about my clothes were the fact that anybody could imitate them; it was the ideas that counted, not their manufacturing.’ The punk movement tested British capitalism: in a do-it-yourself movement there are no goods to exchange. This do-it-yourself attitude stimulated the art and creativity that provided a useful channel of communication, not only through language and music, but also through fashion. Dressing in a certain way made them feel confident. With reference to this McLaren stated ‘I don’t think they considered they could do any of that before. They always felt inferior [...] I think that the whole punk thing was extremely artistic, probably the most artistic thing that’s come about for years, really.’ What they were doing was art. An art without limits and with no fixed rule. Anyone could play, sing or express himself or herself in whatever way they wanted. Punk clothing and terminology were literally a cut-up. This culture put together pieces of the previous youth cultures as well as suggested that history was rubbish. We can understand how in the late ‘70s the situation and the poverty of a nation, its culture and its national consciousness can be identified through the music and the art of a nation itself. Punks have marked a deep gap with a national cultural system. They believed in the conquest of individual autonomy at a time when there was no possibility to study because schools were in decay. Punk music aimed to increase individual skills and be proud of the results that were reached. A very significant role that punk music played concerned the creation of Rock Against Racism (RAR), one of the most important antiracist organizations of that period. 61 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Unlike hippies, punks were actively spreading a message of tolerance and peace and RAR reflected on the real issues. At that time not only did the punk movement help society, but it particularly stimulated the young generation, which established areas to create art such as galleries or exhibitions. One of the most important artists of the ‘70s were Gilbert & George. They met in 1967 at St. Martin's School of Art in London. They took up sculpture; their idea was to wipe out the boundaries between art and life. At a time when people had long hair, body piercing and tattoos they chose the most classic and conventional clothes, as they dressed in suits, as if there were no differences between art and everyday life. During their exhibitions they handed out poems and leaflets on which they wrote "Art for All." One of their most important works, The Singing Sculpture, addressed many topics, highlighting the dual aspect of their art. The theme of their work was poverty and the lack of jobs, topics not often covered by those who studied art. Their play was acted out continuously, with or without an audience, with a direct reference to the work of factory workers who mechanically do the same thing over and over again. Their work was known as conceptual art since they tried to communicate a message through their works of art. Another important artist was Derek Jarman. He was a famous director and screenwriter as well as a painter and said ‘Why do I feel so alienated? I created my own space outside of the institutions. Am I happy? Yes.’ He was an important figure on the scene of the ‘70s and early ‘80s in London. He was very creative and honest during Thatcherism. He was openly gay, and this had a strong impact on society because being gay was not tolerated at all. 62 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile There was a radical change thanks to Pink Floyd’s album The Wall that put into perspective the discontent of an entire country which was on edge. Pink Floyd is a British rock band born in the mid-sixties. During its long career it managed not only to recreate musical trends, but to put into perspective the discontent and the feelings of a nation becoming one of the most important bands in history. In “The Wall” Pink Floyd talks about the society in the late ‘70s that was accused of isolating people and particularly of excluding the vulnerable from society. The main character of this masterpiece, which was divided into three tracks, is Pink. It talks about three crucial episodes of his life that lead him to build a wall that separates him from the rest of the world. In the first part the young man discovers that his father has died during the war and he starts to build a “wall” around himself. The second part focuses on a real cry of protest against teachers exploiting their position to manipulate the minds of children. The musical structure was very accurate and clear and it had a marked rhythm. The aim was to keep spreading the message of protest. In the second part of the track we hear the voices of a young boys’ choir, which implies that the starting protest moved by Pink subsequently becomes a movement supported by the entire body of students hoping to finally get the recognition of an active role within the "world of school," in other words in the “real world.” They finally express their own ideas about the situation and their own judgments about teachers and their teaching method. This feeling of emptiness and incomprehension made him feel completely isolated. It is all about the feelings of the common man thrust out in a society which he felt he did not belonging to. 63 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile A society that criticizes those who are sincere and always tell the truth, even when it creates hardships especially for young people who are starting to build a "wall", that gradually isolates them from the rest of the world. This is one of the best songs that particularly represent the young people of that period. It underlined the sadness and frustration of not having a key role in society and protesting against the government and its power. The government was accused not only of manipulating young people, but also of undermining their own future. This is a "wall" that should not be built but torn down. The Pink Floyd made critical and social observations on the educational methods used in schools during the uprising led by students. Since 1979, when the song came out, many young movements have adopted Another Brick in the Wall as a real battle hymn. In 1980, in South Africa, where apartheid was a reality, and before Mandela a group of students took to the streets against the school system. The song was censored by all radio stations, the album was banned, and the band was also banned from the country. The revolution that Pink dreams of could be considered the struggle to revenge his individuality by criticizing teachers and mocking the uniqueness of a person to shape the minds on a standard mold to please the political system. Teachers unable to understand the importance of their role in the education of young minds did not encourage and motivate students, but humiliated them in order to ensure the "system" a productive citizen without individuality and therefore more likely to be kept under control. The lyrics of Pink Floyd embody the feelings of young people by marking their discontent during the years of student protests. These years led to new ways of communication in the ‘80s and broke down that wall built for many years. It encouraged creating a 64 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile world where it is possible to live a better life, express oneself and where everyone felt they belonged to. “Another brick in the Wall” became an international protest anthem and its chorus served as a perfect refrain for protesters and young students marching against the system and for their freedom and rights . We don't need no education We don’t need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone! All in all it's just another brick in the wall. All in all you're just another brick in the wall 65 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile I.2 The 1980s in England The 1980s in England marked a radical change compared to the 1970s. In 1983 and in 1987 Margaret Thatcher was re-elected prime minister of the United Kingdom. In England at that time a correlation between music and social and civil issues was missing. The main goal of Live Aid, organized by former punk musician Bob Geldof in 1984, was to make pop and rock music play an important role in civil and political issues. The dialogue between government and social partners was becoming harder and harder with a strong aversion of the rock world against Thatcher. After privatizations, the development of nuclear power, riots and clashes between workers and police, and the war in the Falklands characterized the early years of Thatcher’s government. Moreover, in 1984 there was a clash between miners and police. The strike against layoffs and privatization was declared illegal and then the protesters were attacked violently by the police. Many artists had already spoken out against the conservatives and the so-called "Iron Lady" like The Redskins and Elvis Costello with his "Shipbuilding" against the war in the Falklands, The Smiths with "The Queen is Dead. " The need to put a stop to the conservative party gave rise to the creation of a real movement organized by musicians who supported the Labor Party in the elections of 1987. This group of artists was called "Red Wedge." It was a cultural and musical phenomenon, a true example for the education and coordination of young generations. 66 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile They promoted concerts and shows to raise the necessary funds to support the struggle of the British miners. Among the artists involved were Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, The Smiths and Tom Robinson. They organized a tour in 1986 and then took part in the "Artist Against Apartheid Meeting" in June 1986 and the anti-apartheid campaign "Free Nelson Mandela." Their motto was "Move on ! Go For Labor." In June 1987 Margaret Thatcher was re-elected for the third time. The Red Wedge underlined an original and proactive political ideas and supported the civil willingness of the British rock world that was more aware and more involved. After the self-destructive attitude during the punk era, many young people considered the New Romantics a breath of fresh air. Their style was glam rock with outfits and unusual and striking hairstyles. Several bands were punk but now they were considering the punk movement without prospective and were using the "do-it-yourself " motto. Punks were left not with music but with their creative and innovative clothing, and the do-it-yourself culture that made young people feel strong and independent. Piercings disappeared and eyeliners were now being used. They represented the opposite and positive side of punk because they took the idea of personal growth and creativity of the punk movement to the extreme. This new movement took as reference points David Bowie and Iggy Pop, and the most famous groups in England were Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Boy George. An example of the New Romatics’ optimism and different point of view is Ordinary World by Duran Duran. Papers in the roadside Tell of suffering and greed 67 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Here today, forgot tomorrow Ooh, here besides the news Of holy war and holy need Ours is just a little sorrowed talk And I don't cry for yesterday There's an ordinary world Somehow I have to find And as I try to make my way To the ordinary world I will learn to survive Many arts laboratories were opened and one of the most famous Arts Lab was the B2 lab. In 1980 the artist and gallery owner David Dawson took over a huge area of 1,500 square meters in a tea warehouse in Wapping Wall, London. He also built his home in a section of the gallery. The B2 was not just a gallery and a space for performances; it was a laboratory of art and ideas in the tradition of the Arts Lab. Even the Blitz, one of the most popular discos at that time, often organized exhibitions and shows. Another movement was called The Neo-Naturists. It was put together by people who had studied art and lived mostly in squats. Few of the most famous Neo Naturist artists were Christine and Jennifer Binnie, along with Boy George, who hosted shows and exhibitions in their squat. The Neo-Naturists were the last major movement and joined the hippie idealism and spirit of love in a postpunk era. They were in strong opposition to the negativity of punk. 68 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile At the end of the ‘80s there was a radical change. Under the Thatcher government galleries and museums were forced to seek private sponsorship because government subsidies were no longer provided. Art schools were incorporated into universities and colleges so that instead of having the freedom to experiment and create students were subjected to evaluations. In the late '80s there was a generation of artists who grew up in the Thatcher era and considered art a business and not a means of personal expression. 69 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile I.2.1 Reflections on the language Below are some slang words used in England during the ‘70s and ‘80s: - D.I.Y. (adjective) is an acronym for "Do It Yourself." Self-sufficient/independent - Terms used to describe a person, a group, or an organization that is not influenced or helped by others. - Emo (noun) is short for emotional. Emo music is somewhat 'sappy' and heartfelt. Most emo's listen predominantly to emo music. Their lifestyle is a mix of straight-edge and non-political involvement in a predominantly political scene. They usually do not fit in well in society. It is used by someone who wants to refer to a person who is involved in the emocore music scene. - Hardline (adjective) is a person who is incredibly extreme about his/her beliefs, and will go to violent ends to uphold those beliefs and push them upon others. Usually used in reference to straight-edger. - Skinhead. It is used for a person with a shaved head. It refers to a male/female that is politically active and usually violent. Most of their policies are usually anti-racist. Skinheads originated as a tight-knit group from the working class. - Zine. Short for magazine or an independent small magazine. These magazines are mostly released by individuals but some are released by a group of people. They range from a cut and paste format with only a limited number of issues circulating in a local region, to thousands pressed for international distribution. Topics of zines range from interviews with bands to political theorizing to life stories. It is used within the punk rock subculture, as well as other subcultures to refer to small independent press reporters. 70 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile - Distro. It comes from the word distribution. It refers to a group or a person that sells underground music, zines, patches, t-shirts, etc. at a low price. 71 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Second chapter II.1 The ‘70’s in Germany In Germany there was a similar phenomenon, but with a different social and political context compared to England. After the start of the Cold War and following the German defeat in World War II, Germany was divided into two states for about 40 years. West Germany was controlled by France, the United Kingdom and the United States and on May 23, 1949 it was called the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland). On October 7, 1949 the Soviet bloc became the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) commonly called GDR. These two states were commonly called West Germany and East Germany. The East had its capital city in East Berlin, while the West chose Bonn as its capital. West Germany became a free economy, which worked closely with the United States and Western Europe and enjoyed a prosperous economic growth. East Germany was part of the Eastern bloc and was under the political and military control of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, divided for 28 years the current capital of Germany and became the symbol of the Cold War. In East Berlin, which was under the control of the USSR, there was censorship and a socialist regime. For this reason there were few punk movements and groups like Ausschlag split up due to the pressure of the regime. Instead, in West Germany, especially in West Berlin, which was under the influence of the United States, the punk movement became very popular. One of the most important treaties was signed in 1972 between the German Federal State and GDR. This was not an official recognition, but 72 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile a set of agreements to regulate relations between the two German states to improve the situation of the GDR by promoting economic, political and cultural relations. In 1979 in West Berlin the punk movement began and young people stared living in squats. In this way, young people start to rebel against the system. They felt lost and restrained by a wall that was now part of their lives. This wall was a boundary to their freedom even more so in Germany than in any other place. It was not only a real wall, but also a boundary that blurred their horizons. They helplessly observed that big block that divided the city and all of Germany into two blocs. ‘To reach Krahl-Eck they walked along a street that had to belong to the GDR because the Wall swallowed up the roadway and the whole left side of the road, and the more they proceeded the more they squeezed between the Wall and the houses, the more Frank had the feeling that someone was taking away their air.’ The novel by Sven Regener Der kleine Bruder (The little Brother) tells the story of the punk movement, squatters and overcrowded neighborhoods by artists in West Berlin. The book talks about the daily routines, the evenings and the wandering of Frank Lehmann who is surrounded by eccentric characters committed to creatività. The language creates a captivating realism that highlights sayings of that time. Frank is surrounded by street artists, musicians and punk artists living from hand-to-mouth without wondering why. This book portrays a generation living at a time of radical change without ever compromising their individuality. ‘ Everyone’s there. And therefore, dear Chrissie, we will be there, and if we weren’t there, then even the avant-garde wouldn’t be there.’ 73 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Young people created their dimension that included extremism and extravagant lifestyles, everything was a piece of art. The area of Kreuzberg has historically been the place where the punk movement as well as other alternative subcultures in Germany were born. It was the free spirit that made the subculture of Berlin so special because it provided unique opportunities for real and aspiring artists. This freedom gave thousands and thousands of opportunities to live an extreme lifestyle without any limits. This meant living in filth and degradation and that they were forgotten by those who had to take care of them. They wanted to bring down the social and architecture barriers created by the same country that stopped them from being a unified country and a community. Ton Steine Scherben in their song Keine Macht für Niemand (No power for Nobody) wanted to criticize Germany and its government. I am not free and can only choose which thieves steal from me, and killers I am ruled by. I have been bleeding to death a thousand times and they have forgotten me. I have been starving to death a thousand times and they were full. 74 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile During the ‘70s many exhibitions were held in Berlin organized by the Goete Institut. The most important and famous was called Wall City or International Contemporary Art Show. Thanks to the Wall City things in Berlin and in Germany started to pick up. Thanks to art people from all over the world finally began to come to Germany and they started to understand what it was like living in Berlin and in Germany in the ‘70s. 75 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile II.2 The ‘80s in Germany From the late '70s to the early ‘80s trade between East and West Germany increased. The GDR asked for credits in exchange for small improvements in human relations between the East and the West. The "hard line" during the ‘50s and ‘60s contributed to making the contrasts between East and West Germany worse. Even if the “two Germanys” were no longer in great contrast as they were during the first twenty years and even though small changes were made to help the population of eastern Germany to favor contacts with their relatives, the new policies led to basis for comparison between East and West that helped to increase the internal conflicts of the GDR. In the second half of the ‘80s, when the reunification was near, very few people believed it would actually take place. To everyone’s surprise and within a very short time the two Germanys were reunited due to two factors: the arrival of Gorbachev as leader of the Soviet Union and the growing political and economic hardships of Eastern countries and especially of the GDR. In the eighties the Soviet Union, which was powerful and dangerous according to many, was in crisis. The economy was underdeveloped as it had low levels of productivity. Moreover, the great efforts made to keep the pace with the United States greatly reduced the funds of the state budget. Thanks to the "Perestroika", a radical change of politics and economy, Gorbachev brought changes leading to a transparent policy. In the USSR and in other eastern states there were now economic and democratic reforms. The people of the GDR asked to implement the same reforms that were being implemented in the USSR. 76 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile There was also a radical change for the movements of young people. In 1980, many new punk bands became popular. One of these bands was the so-called "deutschpunk." Music became more politically involved with radical and left-wing lyrics during the Cold War. There was a growing mistrust of political institutions among young people. The most popular band at the time was Slime from Hamburg, who was the first band that was banned because of political issues. Where fascists and multinationals govern the country Where life and the environment interest not Where all people are losing their ego only one thing can really happen Germany must die so that we may live! As well as the deutschpunk movent, Die Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) wanted the Cold War to end and called for the reunification of Germany. Alfred Hilsberg, a journalist who wrote an article about Germany’s reunification came up with the word "Neue Deutsche Welle." He called his piece, which was published in October 1979, "Neue Deutsche Welle - Aus grauer Städte Mauern" ("The New Wave of Germany - the gray walls of the city. ''). The New German 77 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Wave showed how much the people needed a radical change. “No more wars, no more conflicts” was the motto used in order to rebuild their future and their own country. The song 99 Luftballons by Nena was against the war. In the song the 99 red balloons flying in the sky are mistaken for an enemy attack causing a war. Mann, wer hätte das gedacht Dass es einmal soweit kommt Wegen 99 Luftballons 99 Jahre Krieg Ließen keinen Platz für Sieger Kriegsminister gibt's nicht mehr Und auch keine Düsenflieger Heute zieh ich meine Runden Seh' die Welt in Trümmern liegen Hab' 'nen Luftballon gefunden Denk' an Dich und lass' ihn fliegen Man, who would have thought that things would someday go so far Because of 99 balloons 99 years of war Left no room for winners Ministers of war exist no more Nor any jet fighters Today I’m making my rounds And seeing the world destroyed 78 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile I found a balloon And I let it fly thinking of you On November 9, 1989 Gunther Schabowski, leader of the SED party (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) surrendered. That day was the beginning of the end of the Cold War. Starting from midnight on that same day, the citizens of the GDR were free to cross the borders of the country and so from East to West, the citizens of Berlin gathered all around the wall. Days and weeks later many people flocked to the Brandenburg Gate and surrounded the Wall to bring it down. Germany was officially reunified on October 3, 1990. On March 18, 1990 the first and only free elections in the history of the German Democratic Republic were held. November 9 is considered the day the Wall fell and it became the official date the following year on July 21, 1990 with a huge concert by Roger Waters (the former bassist of Pink Floyd) who performed The Wall live. The fall of the Wall has meant a profound turning point for the next generations, who now were happily part of a world without barriers. 79 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Conclusion After the Second World War young people were pushed to fight and to take part in an underground resistance. The innovations that young generations now boast is mainly due to the achievements of the generations of the sixties, seventies and eighties. These generations wanted to achieve that great feeling of independence. Everyone creates his/her own path, but the greatest thing is that these young people created it all together. They changed ways, colors and their language going against society and more specifically going against their parents’ generations. They saw the conformity that adults accepted and they wanted to escape from it. Their families and their parents that “created” wars and the atomic bomb gave way to alienation and mistrust because morals were only an illusion and therefore not real. Rebellion was not a way to save themselves from their parents and more generally from society, but a way to escape from it. For this reason they had a destructive behavior because they could no longer find a place where they felt at home. The fact that these movements existed for us and for the future generations was extremely crucial. They fought against a standardized culture, challenging the conformity of their parents in order to achieve personal independence and a radical change in their lives. “Trust in young people is the only hope of every old generation.”26 Everything that was done in those years is a reflection of people’s lives today. 26 Kopp, Scheldon B. (1978) If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him! The Pilgrimage of Psychotherapy Patients, New York, Bantam Doubleday Dell . 80 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Young people are always being motivated to create something that can represent them. Every single piece of art is and will be a strong and an effective means of communication because it is real and authentic. Today many things have changed, but we are still facing the same problems that were being faced many years ago. Now we have new technologies and we receive information from the media that perhaps in the past did not inform us on what was happening around the world. But now things are different. Despite this, people are not aware of the power that they have and so they spend more time watching TV instead of going out to strike for our future. But there are still plenty of artists and young people who are able to look ahead. The arts are still a breeding ground for genuine free spirits who cannot be contained. Career opportunities are the ones that never knock Every job they offer you is to keep out the dock Career opportunities, the ones that never knock 88 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Die Sex Pistols waren nicht politisch involviert, aber sie übermittelten eine politische Nachricht durch ihr Verhalten. When there's no future How can there be sin We're the flowers in the dustbin We're the poison in your human machine We're the future, your future God save the queen 89 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Punk war keine Religion oder politische Partei. Was Punk machte war Kunst. Die Gruppe Duran Duran mit ihrem Lied „Ordinary world“ sangen: 96 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Papers in the roadside Tell of suffering and greed Here today, forgot tomorrow Ooh, here besides the news Of holy war and holy need Ours is just a little sorrowed talk And I don't cry for yesterday There's an ordinary world Somehow I have to find And as I try to make my way To the ordinary world I will learn to survive Viele Künstlerlabors wurden geöffnet, das berühmteste war das B2. 107 L’evo l u zio ne d el la co m un ica zio ne g io va n ile Bibliografia Gray Marcus (1995), Last Gang in Town.
