Dolla does not pander to the throughout his entire body of work — and thus his work remains an exemplification of artistic truth. We have accompanied Noël Dolla throughout his artistic journey: from the very recent Restructuration at FIAC to the Croix and Tarlatane of the 1970s. In our journey with Dolla, we have touched the boundary of the Zero Degree. In the ultimate analyses, we note that painting can be created through a canvas which is cut and restitched, in gauze immersed in a bucket of color, in an artificial lake and also in the snow (protagonist of a celebrated 1970 Restructuration in France’s Authion mountain range). On second thought, the color, or the “something” which Dolla uses to intervene on the surface, is not even important. Besides the collector and the collector’s personal appreciation, little is changed if a cross is red or green. What matters is that man is at the center of the artistic operation and not excluded. This is true even in the series of the polaroid photographs, Photos Quantiques, which are obtained through random process but where human involvement is still required. spettatore fuggita da Dolla. maintains a touch of coloring observer — this is apparent lo - cosa peraltro sempre ri- it is almost a “one degree” that “supports/surfaces”, museum of art, Tel Aviv, 1992 meccanicamente nel caolino. NOËL DOLLA was born in Nice in 1945, where he still lives and works. His first personal exhibition dates back from 1969, consisting in the painted rocks of “Restructuration n° 2”, Cime de l’Authion. From the beginning of his career he explored the limits of painting and its structure. In 1971 he took part to the exhibitions founding the movement "Supports / Surfaces", including those at the Municipal Theatre of Nice and at the Cité Universitaire in Paris. He started working on the basis of painting, its media and later on the relationship between form and colour. Between 1974 NOËL DOLLA è nato nel 1945 a Nizza, dove vive e lavora. Tra il 1974 e il 1975 espone in Italia a Fi- and 1975 he exhibited in Italy, in Florence (Gallery Spagnoli), Milan and Genoa (Galleria La Bertesca), but also in Brussels (Galerie Baronian), Cologne (Galerie Maenz) and Dusseldorf (Galerie La Bertesca). At the end of the decade he decided to leave his "crosses", the series that had made him famous in Europe since 1980, and dedicated himself mainly to another series –that of tarlatans, hanging from the wall without frame or support. The comparison between materials is also a primary element of interest of the Noel Dolla, rue Fodéré, 1966 photo © DR ELAN ("Rush") group, consisting of 6 unreal artists whose names are all anagrams of "Noël Dolla." He never left his interest for nature and for the pictorial intervention in open spaces, ideas that he had always proposed since his first "Spatial Reconstructions" dating from the late sixties. During the nineties he continued his research into new fields, such as the "Jalousies", Mediterranean-style shutters, and the "baits". In these years he exhibited at Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Etienne ("Supports / Surfaces", 1991), Museum of Art in Tel Aviv (1992), Museum of Art in Saitama (1993) and in 1999 he took part in the exhibition "The thresholds of painting - France Italy 1968-1998" held at the Exhibition Centre of Rocca Paolina in Perugia. During the two-thousands he took part in some other important group shows: "Nice Movements, Contemporary French Art" (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2000), "Open Studios" (ISCP, New York, 2001), "Eau Gaz et à tous les étages "(MAMCO, Geneva, 2003)," Co-conspirators: Artist and Collector: the Collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett "(Orlando Museum of Art, 2004),"Supports / Surfaces. Yesterday and Today "(Zappettini Foundation, Chiavari and Milano, 2005), "Matt surfaces of Analytical Painting "(Zappettini Foundation, Chiavari, 2009),"Painting and Painting" (Palazzo Robellini, Acqui Terme, 2010). Among the most recent solo shows we can remember those dedicated to him by MAMCO in Geneva (2003), the Brussels venue of the Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire (2004), by Zappettini Foundation in Milan (2009) and the great retrospective held at the Musée d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne (2009). renze (Galleria Spagnoli), Milano e Genova (Galleria La Bertesca), ma anche a Bruxelles (Galerie Baronian), Colonia (Galerie Maenz) e Düsseldorf (Galerie La Bertesca). Negli Anni Duemila ha preso parte ad alcune importanti collettive: “Nice Movements, Contemporary French Art” (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2000), “Open Studios” (ISCP, New York, 2001), “Eau et Gaz à tous les étages” (Mamco, Ginevra, 2003), “Co-conspirators: Artist and Collector: the Collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett” (Orlando Museum of Art, 2004), “Supports/Surfaces. Ieri e oggi” (Fondazione Zappettini, Chiavari e Milano, 2005), “Le superfici opache della Pittura Analitica” (Fondazione Zappettini, Chiavari, 2009), “Pittura e Pittura” (Palazzo Robellini, Acqui Terme, 2010). Tra le personali più recenti ricordiamo quelle dedicategli dallo stesso Mamco di Ginevra (2003), dalla sede di Bruxelles della Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire (2004) dalla Fondazione Zappettini di Milano (2009) e l’imponente antologica allestita al Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne (2009). 97 Esposizioni personali Solo Exhibitions 2016 • Degré Zéro, Galerie Menhir, Milan, 10 novembre - 15 janvier 2017 • Plis & Replis 3, Tap Seac Gallery, Macau, Chine, 25 juin – 9 octobre • Tendu/Détendu, G.A.C., Annonay, 10 mars – avril • Plis & Replis d’hôtel, Hôtel Windsor, Nice, 6 février – 18 novembre 2015 • Plis & Replis “Silence“, Galerie Bernard Ceysson, Paris, 22 oct. – 15 déc. • Plis & Replis, Galerie Bernard Ceysson, Luxembourg, 7 fév. – 14 mars 2013 • Peinture en grève, Collège Port Lympia, Nice, 21 nov. 2013 – 4 fév. 2014 • Entrée Libre Mais Non Obligatoire, Villa Arson, Nice, 29 juin – 21 octobre 2013, commissariat : Eric Mangion 2010 • Rouge Toujours, Galerie Le Cabinet, Paris, 15 janv. – 20 mars 2009 • Léger vent de travers, Mac Val, Vitry-sur-Seine, 5 mars – 2 août 2009, commissariat : Frank Lamy * • Noël Dolla, Galerie des Multiples, Paris, mars 2009 • Noël Dolla, Fondazione Zappettini, Milan, Italie, mars 2009 * 2007 • Jeunes filles aux œillets, Galerie contemporaine de l’Hôtel de Ville, Chinon, 7 oct. – 18 nov. • My Mother Flying between Dog Food and Fish Food, Galerie Soardi, Nice, 15 mars - 14 avril 2007 2006 • Noël Dolla, Noir, jaune, violet et rose quelque part, Le Dojo, Nice 2005 • Soleil voilé, Galerie Les Filles du calvaire, Paris, 9-27 septembre et 14-29 octobre 2005 2004 • Noël Dolla - Cold White et Blanchot, Galerie Les filles du Calvaire, Bruxelles, Belgique • Off shore, exposition itinérante, Paris, Tours, St Etienne, Sète, Nice 2003 • Non, 1967-2001, Mamco, Genève, février – avril 2003, Suisse, commissariat : Christian Bernard 2002 98 • Noël Dolla Raide Étendu, Espace d'art contemporain Gustave Fayet, Sérignan, novembre 2002 – janvier 2003 2001 • Tableaux d'Ecole V, Université Sophia Antipolis, Nice • La larme militaire ou la ballade à dos d'âne, Galerie chez Valentin, Paris 1999 • Vir heroicus sublimis Find us /Le grand Leurre, Mamac, Nice, juin – sept., commissariat : Noël Dolla * 1998 • Cinq silences, Centre d'art contemporain de Vassivière, Vassivière, commissariat : Dominique Marchés * • Homère, Le Quartier, Centre d'art contemporain de Quimper, Quimper, commissariat : Dominique Abensour • Noël Dolla one-man show, Fondation Katinka Prini de Genova à Art Jonction, Nice • Un leurre, Villa Steinbach art contemporain, Mulhouse • Un outil parfait, Maison Levanneur, Centre national de l'estampe et de l'art imprimé, Chatou, commissariat : Sylvie Boulanger • 15 Lès, création d'un panoramique, Musée du papier peint de Rixheim 1997 • FIAC, Galerie Météo, Paris 1996 • Peintures, 14/12/1967 - 25/12/1968, Galerie Nice Fine Arts, Nice • Tableaux d'école et Leurres de Noël, Galerie Météo, Paris 1995 • L'abstraction humiliée 4, Galerie Gabrielle Vitte, Ajaccio • L'abstraction humiliée, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienne, Autriche, commissariat : Lorand Hegyi * • La nuit des longs lobes 2, Galerie N.Z.E.T Projekt (Météo) Gand, Belgique 1994 • L'abstraction humiliée, Le Parvis, Tarbes • Les silences de la fumée, Frac Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand • Enol.
