E con il Comune di Sarzana la Fondazione allestì una rassegna che scandagliasse nei per- U sea of people who every day calmly, uncontrollably slide through the various streets of the historical center, in the bars and restaurants that wink at you from every corner with their intriguing menus, the art galleries, shops and stands that offer a little bit of everything, from vintage clothing to old prints, from costume jewelry to collectors’ items. Every August, Sarzana performs the miracle and transforms itself into a myriad of different situations: from literary salon to artist’s workshop or science lab to bazaar to antique dealer’s shop. All of this happens in a tiny medieval quarter, and here is the miracle. Certainly, a month so full of events produces some stress for those who live there, but it also gives great stimulation and suggestions. And it brings wealth to business and the tourism industry. For Sarzana, the jump in quality came with the Festival of the Mind, six years ago when the Foundation of the bank Cassa di Risparmio, after a careful market analysis, decided to cut out for itself an original space in the feverish offering of festivals in Italy. Festivals make the heart of mayors, bankers and sponsors beat faster, because cultural tourism is a sector that is expanding. The City of Sarzana and the Foundation put together a review that explored the various paths of the mind and creativity. Since then, Sarzana became an important A corsi della mente e della creatività. Ogni euro investito, in sostanza, ne produce 8. “Festival e pubblico crescono insieme – dice Giulia Cogoli, ideatrice e stopping point on the intellectual pilgrimage that every year sees 9 million curious and cultured people on the move (the data comes from research by SWG) who are looking for new stimuli for the mind. Since then, the principal problem for organizers has paradoxically been that of stopping the Festival from taking on dimensions that are greater than those planned, thus compromising the ‘sustainability’ of the event. They have managed to limit the length of the festival (never more than 3 days) and contain the number of events (no more than 40-42) raising however the quality of the presenters and analyses, by going to dig out the best in the various fields of knowledge even if they are not that well-known to a large audience. Thirty-four thousand attendees last year and an economic benefit of 4 million euros, calculated by a study of the Bocconi Univresity, on an investment of 480,000 euros. Each euro invested, in substance, produced 8. And in a country where every year over 1200 festivals are held, a large part of which have a short life, Sarzana’s festival has planted strong roots and may count on a public that is fond of it. “Festivals and audiences grow together,” says Giulia Cogoli, the creator and director of the Festival, “and over the years, we have raised the level of the contents, con- Serata d'estate in piazza Matteotti Summer evenings in Piazza Matteotti 30 blue news news blue 31 Photo Lara Lori/EnricoPorro/ChiaraMariotti/SaraFrassini/SilviaLanfranchi Locali, spettacoli e bancarelle: la "Soffitta" in strada trasforma il centro storico di Sarzana Restaurants, shows and stands: the "Attic" on the street transforms Sarzana's historical center direttrice del Festival – e negli anni abbiamo elevato il livello dei contenuti considerando che nella vendita dei biglietti i primi eventi a risultare esauriti erano quelli che avevano per tema filosofia e neuroscienze”. Certo, Matteo Melley, presidente della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio che ha voluto fortemente la rassegna, vorreb- sidering that in the sale of tickets, the first events that are sold out are those that have as their theme philosophy and neuroscience.” Another reason for the success that is not secondary is the involvement of the local population. People from Sarzana are proud to live in one of the summer capitals of culture while those from La Spezia have taken very badly how Sarzana has ranked above them, and are trying to take the news with a smile. During the days of the Festival, it is normal to run into the Mayor, Massimo Caleo, in jacket and tie, on his bike as he rides around the city checking on the organization and that the tourist welcome is functioning as it should, that the parking and the information points are working, while his assistants take care of even more humble tasks without complaining. The Festival for the local community is a point of pride and participation and it is also for this that it is growing every year. Certainly, the President of the Foundation of the bank Cassa di Risparmio, Matteo Melley, who strongly supported this event would like the be che le ricadute non fossero solo economiche ma anche culturali. Gianfranco benefits to be not only economic but also cultural. If only the purchase of books would increase, the interest for art and theatre, if only the number of new patents presented every year to the Chamber of Commerce would increase, and maybe even the number of students from that area registered at the University in science faculties. For now, he is content to ‘fertilize’ the territory and he is happy to underscore an important – and unique – result achieved by the Festival together with the Laterza publishing house: a series of books (four have already come out) that take their cue from the lesson-events. The 2008 Festival set off some fiery debates: two major newspapers, L’Avvenire and il Corriere della Sera, but also the Bishop of the dioceses had seen that the Festival program was lacking cultural plurality and had noticed a preponderant presence of lay thought. At the center was the mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi, honorary president of the Union of Atheists and Rational Agnostics, who occupied an important space in the events. It will be Luca Cavalli Sforza, geneticist and scientist of international stature, one of the most authoritative scholars in the field of population genetics and migration of man, who will open the 6th annual Festival of the Mind. Cavalli Sforza, 87 years old, will hold his lecture on civil evolution and biological evolution. The psychoanalyst Luigi Zoia will focus on another theme of great current importance: violence and the crisis of the male identity. The historian Alessandro Barbero who last year spoke about the Crusades and the Jiad, will talk about another original topic: the destructive creativity of wars, examined considering three great battles in history. Don Antonio Sciortino, director of “Famiglia Cristiana” will hold a lecture on “Lay thought and Catholic thought,” identifying possible common ground for dialogue. The program dedicated to children plans for a lecture on the Italian Constitution on the part of the judge Gherardo Colombo and a course of design to be held by Steven Guarnaccia, illustrator and designer who lives and works in New York. Contesa, per questo, da pisani, fiorentini, lucchesi e genovesi. b Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, and this year it will be the director of Famiglia Cristiana (Christian Family is a Catholic magazine), don Antonio Sciortino who will counter Odifreddi, who after speaking about Darwin and Galileo, will talk about Newton. This year the Festival of the Mind will be held for the first time in September, from the 4th to the 6th. From August 8 to 23, instead, it will antiques, as always, that will be the center of attraction. Along with the National Exhibit held at the Firmafede Fortress, now in its 30th year, there will be the traditional Attic in the streets of the historical center. The show puts up its stands in the structure that Lorenzo il Magnifico wanted in the place of the one built by the Pisans some two centuries earlier, and it allows for admiring a huge selection of antique furniture, decorative objects and paintings. This is a high-level event promoted by the Sarzana Association of Antiques dealers, with 50 exhibiters who put on display their best pieces, whose authenticity is rigorously certified. Another event that will come up again is “Precious Things in the Fort” with a scintillating path through the world of jewels, silver and porcelain. And this year a collateral show dedicated to the market of antique arms is planned. “Don’t trust me if you don’t have courage” is the title of the path through the history of Italian Arms and Armory between ‘400 e ‘700 organized by Czerny’s International Auction House, the auction house from Sarzana exclusively specialized in important ancient arms, armory and knights’ orders, military memorabilia and antiques was founded in 1999 by Michele Czerny. The “Attic in the Streets,” the antiques market with even more recent items will take place every evening until late, attracting collectors and amateurs who here can find a little bit of everything, from an antique book to a Persian rug. Hundreds and hundreds of stands in the streets with antiques shops will be transformed into an oriental-style bazaar rich in lights and colors. Thus Sarzana rediscovers its vocation as an old medieval village, when it was the crossroads for pilgrims, merchants and soldiers. And thus fought over by the towns of Pisa, Florence, Lucca and Genoa. b Dove dormire e mangiare Sarzana offre moltissime possibilità, soprattutto per quanto riguarda ristoranti e trattorie.
