Nei suoi lavori tratta tematiche politiche e sociali e sostiene attivamente associazioni e progetti come Amnesty International e l'American Indian Movement prestandosi come testimonial. Sublime e Bello” (A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful) ha ispirato i più grandi filosofi di tutti i tempi come Immanuel Kant, e i pittori del Romanticismo. (Stephen Greenblatt, „Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare”, 2005, pag. 213). [...] [...] Era incostante come l’acqua. [...] La fonte primaria, però, a cui Shakespeare si è ispirato è “The True Chronicle History of King Lear, and his three daughters, Gonorill, Regan, and Cordelia”, pubblicato anonimamente dodici anni prima della rappresentazione teatrale dei King's Men. Conosce Pietro a scuola. Basta, basta, piccola candela! La vita non è che un’ombra che cammina; un povero attore, che si pavoneggia e s’agita un momento sulla scena, e non sarà udito più: è una storia raccontata da un’idiota, piena di rumore e di furia che non significa nulla.”20 20 William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Atto V, scena V, vv.15-24 “To-morrow, and to-morrow, and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our 48 yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” 49 TWO SHAKESPEARIAN TRAGEDIES ON THE STAGE OF CURRENT EVENTS INTRODUCTION Singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant 21 wrote in her song "Carnival" these verses: "I've walked these streets, a virtual stage it seemed to me, make up on their faces, actors took their places next to me, hypnotized and mesmerized by what my eyes have seen; [...] I've walked these streets in the mad house asylum they can be."22 In my opinion, metaphorically speaking, this song is the best example for describing human life: the virtual stage is the world we live in and we are surprisingly the actors. Famous poet and author, Charles Bukowski loved walking down the streets with some paper and writing down everything that caught his attention. He used to say: "People are the best show in the world. And you don’t even pay for the ticket."23 People's actions have always been handed down from one generation to another by poets, journalists, and also singers such as Merchant. In fact, while Natalie was capturing everything she saw with a camera, she was gripped by Hamletic doubts. In the text of her song she carried on asking herself: "Have I been blind, have I been lost inside myself and my own mind hypnotized, mesmerized by what my eyes have seen?"; in the same way as Hamlet, she is wrapped in her virtual mantle of doubt and 21 Natalie Anne Merchant is an American singer-songwriter and musician, even if her family comes from Sicily. She joined the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and left it to begin her solo career in 1993. Her songs deal with political and social issues and she actively supports organizations and projects such as Amnesty International and the American Indian Movement lending herself as a testimonial. 22 Translation by Giulia Mollo, of the song “Carnival”. Carnival is a 1995 song written and produced by singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant and was the lead single from her debut solo album “Tigerlily“. Famous American serial killer Aileen Wuornos wanted this song to be played during her funeral. 23 Charles Bukowski, „Erections, Ejaculations, Exhibitions, and General Tales of Ordinary Madness“, 1972. 50 contemplation, coincidentally her music video is in black and white. The adjective hypnotized and the sentence ‘mad-house asylum they can be’ together mean the downside of human nature: people's actions are not always good for the community. The cycle of life is made up of the alternation of beautiful and sad moments, of life and death. This dissertation consists of three parts, one for each language: Italian, English and German. It is focused on the comparison between William Shakespeare's works, which are well known throughout the world, and current events. His works, in particular his tragedies are very topical. The first chapter is about the poet's life and the role of theatre during the Elizabethan Age and during history in general; the second chapter shows a sort of time travel, starting from the analysis of the tragedy of "Othello, the Moor of Venice" to arrive at the description of two Italian modern-day crimes of passion; the third chapter is focused on the analogies between the tragedy of "King Lear" and two Italian modern-day family murders. Prominent modern-day murders catch the attention of public audience and mass media. These crimes stir up mixed feelings of shock and sadistic joy within us, nobody can deny it! From Samuele Lorenzi (the Cogne homicide, 2002) to little Loris Stival (2014), not to mention Sarah Scazzi (2010), Yara Gambirasio (2010), Meredith Kercher (2007) and Melania Rea (2011), they have become so popular that sometimes they have bizarre implications such as the carnival costumes inspired by the murder of Sarah Scazzi and crime tours to Avetrana. In other words crime is sublime. According to Edmund Burke's idea, the first philosopher who invented this concept, in his book „A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful“, 1756, he says that sublime is a "negative pain" which he called delight, and which is distinct from positive pleasure. Delight results from the removal of pain (caused by confronting the sublime object) and is supposedly more 51 intense than positive pleasure, he calls it "delightful horror". Terrifying things in nature such as stormy seas, snowy mountains and volcanic eruptions and also human nature are sublime, since they produce the strongest emotions in our soul. The more a fear is terrifying the more it is sublime and our deepest fear is death. However, to be sublime death must not be experienced personally but has to be lived through other persons such as the victims of popular crimes. The word stage in the title of this dissertation is the metonymy24 of theatre and theatre is the metaphor of the human community. Stage is the ancestor of Modernday communications media, the most powerful one that entertains its spectators with different subjects, reassuring them from the awareness that "everything is fake but nothing false" as Gigi Proietti25 says. Speaking about theatre, Vittorio Gassman 26 one of the most representative Italian actors , who decided to pursue a career as an actor rather than as a basketball player in the national team, writes in the book "Cinque modi per conoscere il teatro" 27 these words: „We decided to publish these plays in volume, because we want the book to inspire research, reading and listening; we want people to recognize theatre as the perfect situation where everyone takes part in social life, the perfect situation for the right to the intellectual life, that is fundamental in a very autonomous and democratic community.“ I know the Bard does not need my help to gain more fame and audience. Nonetheless I wish my speech will make my peers closer to this superb author. 24 Metonymy is a figure of speech that consists of the use of the name of one object or concept for that of another to which it is related, or of which it is a part as stage of theatre. 25 Luigi "Gigi" Proietti is an Italian actor, director, dubber, and singer. He is also the artistic director at the Globe Thetare in The Villa Borghese gardens, Rome. 26 Vittorio Gassman (1922-2000), popularly known as Il Mattatore, was an Italian theatre and film actor, as well as director. 27 „Cinque modi per conoscere il teatro“ is a book about the works of the five pillars of modern drama, that are Shakespeare, Molière, Pirandello, Brecht and Ionesco with Hamlet, Le Médecin malgré lui, Right You Are (If You Think So), Die Gewehre der Frau Carrar, The Lesson. 52 1.WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." (W. Shakespeare, „Romeo and Juliet“, act I, scene II, vv.11-12) According to these Shakespeare's words, which were written for the naive Juliet, we could nicely end all the controversies that the mystery on the identity of the author has brought to life. The only truth is that people need to believe in dreams; they have to believe that good things do exist, have always existed and will last forever. This is the reason why despite the copious debates and proofs, the name of William Shakespeare still exists. Anyway, let's go progressively. 1.1 SHAKESPEARE'S IMAGE There are many portraits of William Shakespeare, but only one of them is supposed to be authentic: The Cobbe portrait. An article published in "The Guardian" talks about the story of this portrait. The picture hung on the walls of the Cobbe family for about 300 years. The research was conducted by one of the world's leading Shakespeare experts, Professor Stanley Wells. Nobody cared who the man in the portrait was, since he was believed to be sir Walter Raleigh, an English landed gentleman. In 2002 during an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Alec Cobbe, an art restorer, noticed some similarities between the Cobbe portrait, named after his family, and the Janssen Portrait, by a Flemish painter. Professor Wells was astonished by the view and set in motion more than two years of extensive art historical, literary and scientific research. Two other exhibitions were dedicated to this portrait: "Shakespeare Found: a Life Portrait at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust ", in Stratford upon Avon from April to October 2009 and "The Changing Face of 53 William Shakespeare" at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York , from February to May 2011. Wells gained some evidence from his research: 1. The portrait was acquired by the Cobbe Family through the wife of Mons Cobbe' s cousin together with another picture of Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton; 2. Before the discovery of Cobbe portrait, the world had known many different copies, its divulgation suggests that the man in it was a famous person; 3. The inscription in the painting "Principum Amicitias!", was written by Horatius from a hymn dedicated to a dramatist; 4. Given that there is a similarity, it is believed that this portrait inspired the Droeshout engraving on the cover of First folio in 1623; 5. A scientific analysis states that the portrait was painted on a 1595 panel of English oak, while the collar worn by the man in it is believed to belong to the fashion of 1610; 6. Both this portrait and its Flemish copy received some alterations in the face and in the hair. Even the hairline of the subject makes him younger, while in some copies he seems bald and aged. One of the copies in which the man is bald belongs to the Marquis of Dorchester. Wells' thesis was approved by many experts such as Henry Woudhuysen, Jay L. Halio, Stuart Sillars, and Gregory Doran, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Art historians such as Alastair Laing, Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the National Trust, and Paul Joannides, Professor in the History of Art at the University of Cambridge. Moreover, the fame of this portrait has convinced chinese author Zhang Yiyi to undergo plastic surgery so he looks like to the man in the portrait as much as possible. 54 1.2 THE POET'S LIFE Shakespeare is considered the poet par excellence and George Steevens 28, an English 17th century commentator said about him: „The only thing we know for certain about Shakespeare is that he was born in Stratford upon Avon, there he got married, had three children, went to London and there he played as an actor and wrote poetry and dramas, came back to Stratford, made his will, died and was buried.“ After these few lines, people started to find a lot of papers that referred to his family and his person, so that he became the most famous poet of the 16th century. Many rumours have been heard about his personality and his life, someone said that he was homosexual, others that he had never existed! Shakespeare cannot say anything in his defence at the moment so he left us his works. Words are the only link we have between the past he lived in and the present we live in. No other incontestable evidence that can identify the Shakespearian world with the man from Stratford. Shakespeare's family came from the centre of England, right from the Warwickshire in the West Midlands region, where a certain William Shakespeare of Clopton was executed for theft in 1248. William's parents, Mary Arden and John Shakespeare, fell in love with each other in a very romantic way. Mary's family had a large property in Wilmcote where John worked as tenant farmer. After Sir Arden died, Mary and John got married and moved in nearby Stratford. In Stratford John worked as a glover and leather worker and dealer in wool and hides. While "Bloody" Mary was leaving her throne to her good cousin Queen Elizabeth, John performed important municipal offices, such as the one of bailiff, corresponding to mayor, in 1568. He and his wife bought a house in Henley Street, where Shakespeare was born. The parish register of the town recorded the baptism of William Shakespeare on 26th April 1564, so it is likely the poet to have been born three days before, right on Saint George's day. Shakespeare attended the free grammar school of Stratford, the King's New School, where he studied Latin and Greek. In his spare time William loved 28 George Steevens (10 May 1736 – 22 January 1800) was an English Shakespearean commentator. 55 amusing himself on the bank of the river Avon observing nature under the shadows of the weeping willows. Occasionally he went to work with his father at the weekly market. Above all, he enjoyed watching the theatrical spectacles of street artists. They were the perfect meeting point between the world and the small urban realities. Their shows took place in the town hall. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior. Together they had three children: Susanna, Hamnet and Judith. The period from 1585 to 1592 are the so-called "lost years", since we lost his traces. In 1592 his contemporary Robert Greene wrote: „...there is an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his Tiger's heart wrapped in a Player's hide...supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blank verse as the best of you, is in his own conceit the only Shake-scene in a country.“ (Stephen Greenblatt, „Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare”, 2005, pag. 213). Henry Chettle, the editor of Greene's works, apologized then for Greene's insulting verses, defining Shakespeare an honest and talented man. During the period of the plague, theatres in London were closed and Shakespeare wrote Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucretia. Around Christmas time in 1594 he worked together with two of his colleagues William Kempe and Richard Burbage in the Company of Lord Chamberlain's Men and became one of the owners of The Globe. At the sunset of the Elizabethan Age, King James I changed the name of Shakespeare's company to the King's men. From 1608 the King's men acted in the Blackfriars theatre. The day on which the poet came back home is unknown, but when his two daughters got married: Susanna with John Hall, a doctor, and Judith with Thomas Quiney, a vintner, Shakespeare wrote his will and exhaled his last breath (someone think after an ambiguous drink with Michael Drayton and Ben Jonson). The last Shakespeare's descendant was Elizabeth, Judith's daughter, and she died in 1670. 56 The epitaph carved into the stone slab covering his grave includes a curse against moving his bones, which was carefully avoided during restoration of the church in 2008: (in modern English) Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear, to dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones, and cursed be he that moves my bones. Sometimes before 1623, a funerary monument was erected in his memory on the north wall, with a half-effigy of him in the act of writing. Its plaque compares him to Nestor, Socrates, and Virgil. In 1623, in conjunction with the publication of the First Folio, the Droeshout engraving was published thanks to his friends John Haming and Henry Condell. There are many experts who bring into question the real existence of the Bard of Avon, especially those who are not English. They cannot believe that a single mind could have given birth to all these beautiful masterpieces. Unfortunately, sometimes critics struggle so much to find the hidden meaning behind the lines that they are mistaken and give the author their own opinions (especially English people, who consider Shakespeare a landmark in English heritage). Nowadays, even the peanut vendor at the corner of the street knows the name of Shakespeare and maybe he uses some of his quotes; on Valentine's Day in the chocolate wrapper fortune we find Shakespeare verses; we use Shakespeare's words even on Facebook and in other social platforms in order to describe our moods. We are Shakespeare, because he represents human beings, he really does. Anyway, let's go progressively. 1.3.SHAKESPEARE TIMES 1.3.1.BETWEEN TWO AGES Shakespeare was born between two Ages: Middle Ages and The Renaissance. The Renaissance is the period of discovery and of the rebirth of man as a thinking 57 being. Historians, philosophers, dramatists focused on immanent things and life on Earth. However, thought brings into question the absolute truths and personal certainties: Machiavelli29 disapproves the political behavior of that time, Copernicus criticizes the cosmological order, Martin Luther disapproves the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings, while Montaigne did not believe in the superiority of man over nature. The Renaissance can be defined the period of duality: on one hand it promotes the rebirth, and on the other hand it contemns all aspects of Middle Ages even positive ones. In the west episodes of slavery and absolutism took place, and the Machiavellian Prince was the original model for all men. Shakespeare belongs to the category of Mannerist30 with other writers such as Donne, Tasso and Cervantes. Their group is made up of thoughtful and doubtful personalities with wide knowledge. They are sensitive to change and they somatise it through uneasiness and spiritual disasters. Brilliant is not Shakespeare's choice of subjects, which are mostly known, but brilliant is his ability to give drama and tragedy the same importance they had in Ancient Greece. In England King Henry VIII played the role of the Machiavellian Prince. Henry is known for his radical changes to the English Constitution, ushering in the theory of the divine right of kings to England. Besides asserting the sovereign's supremacy over the Church of England, thus initiating the English Reformation, he greatly expanded royal power. His daughter and heir Elizabeth did the same in a more diplomatic way. Even if Shakespeare did not look kindly upon the rulers, he had to recognize that Tudors did a lot for England. They were able to avoid continental and national wars, they cherished their people and promoted education by making grammar schools free. Thanks to them, London became a cultural and 29 Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 – 1527) was an Italian Renaissance historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist, and writer. He has often been called the founder of modern political science. 30 The definition of Mannerism, and the phases within it, continues to be the subject of debate among art historians. For example, some scholars have applied the label to certain early modern forms of literature (especially poetry) and music of the 16th and 17th centuries. The term is also used to refer to some late Gothic painters working in northern Europe from about 1500 to 1530, especially the Antwerp Mannerists—a group unrelated to the Italian movement. Mannerism also has been applied by analogy to the Silver Age of Latin literature. 58 Renaissance centre. What best climate for the flowering of theatre? Elizabeth gave actors a status that they had never had before. 1.3.2. ELIZABETHAN THEATRES Elizabethan theatres were a booming business and famous as well as the movies and the cinemas of the early 20th century. There were three kinds of venues for plays: • Inn-yards • Open air amphitheatres • Indoor Playhouses While open air theatres remind us of Ancient Greece, inn-yards could be public places, halls and town squares instead of indoor playhouses that were private indoor halls and the bill was more expensive. Both inn-yards and indoor playhouses could host no more than 500 spectators, while open air amphitheatres even 3000 people. The first inn-yard was built in 1576 by James Burbage; they were called inn-yards because their venues were London Inns. Inexpensive both in yard and indoor. The theatre, except for open air amphitheatres, were made up of three galleries: lower, middle and upper gallery for the privileged audience. These galleries overlook the yard, where ordinary people stood, and the stage, where the plays occurred. Behind the stage there were backstage area, dressing rooms and gallery above the stage for musicians and spectators. The original models for Elizabethan dramatists were Ancient Greeks and even events from Britain, Spain, France, Italy and the East. 1.3.3.THEATRE AS A COMMUNICATIONS MEDIUM Theatre was born two thousand years ago. This statement points to the fact that people have always needed it. The nature of theatre is contradictory because on one hand it is very profane, so that it looks like magical ceremonies, but on the other hand, it is supposed to have sacred origins. As well as the other rites it is aimed at 59 appeasing people. Since it benefits both actors and spectators the main function of theatre is ensuring the spiritual survival of the community. The book cited in the introduction of this dissertation speaking about Vittorio Gassman, also made a comparison between theatre and magical ceremonies. One of the analogies is the figure of the actor: the actor corresponds with the figure of the shaman, they are both God's instruments to manifest His word. Shaman, actor and ordained minister are the same thing. Nowadays we know that the shaman was the forefather of the modern-day jobs, but at the time of Aristotle, nobody knew it. According to Aristotle, the only aim of theatre was catharsis, that is the elimination of sins. For Aristotle sins were a consequence of human emotions, so theatre through the script had to erase spectators' sins just like a doctor treats his patients. If we took our stand on Aristotle words we would denigrate Shakespeare's works, fortunately we must consider the context. At the time of Aristotle, theatre had an economic function and taboo and religious bans were an everyday occurrence, while in Shakespeare's there were the different roles of social scale and theatre started to be just an entertainment. Shakespeare's Hamlet confirmed this concept: condemning vices and exalting virtues, a way to lighten the soul and pour out all the negative energies caused by an excessive attachment to money that the bourgeois mentality has instilled within us. Shakespeare used to say that theatre had to be the mirror of society; but how was it possible to have a single vision of the world and men if society was inevitably divided into groups? This statement gave way to the several forms of theatre: popular, propaganda, revolutionary, religious, d'avant-garde, proletarian and chamber theatre. „But if we still trust that we can, sooner or later, find an order in this chaos, we will have the certainty that theatre plays once more its function to show us a new and right behaviour.“ (Translation into English language by Giulia Mollo of Luciano Lucignani’s sentence, from his book “Cinque modi per conoscere il teatro”, 1962, pag.XVIII) 60 Theatre is the image of reality, it is the feature and the mould of the men of a particular age. „Hamlet“ 1.4.THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY People frequently struggle to reach their own goals and realize their own wishes, they constantly pursue them and dream of them but at the time of the achievement they realize that nothing has changed, that they were better off when they were worse off. The pursuit of happiness leads to tragedy. The comparison with the ancient Greek tragedy is obvious. We should be beholden to Greeks, who gave name to our feelings such as: Dike, Tiche, Moira, Ananke. Names of devils and gods Eros, Ate, Alastor. The Renaissance was able to make us familiar with these sacral and unknown worlds. Heraclitus described the Renaissance man in three words: ethos anthropo daimon, where ethos is character, anthropos is man and daimon is fate. Ironically, in Latin the corresponding word to “daimon” is “angelus.” The translation of the statement is "character is fate", which means homo faber fortunae suae. Experts say that is convenient to understand the way in which English dramatists of this period internalised Greek literature and tragedy. Gaudi used to say to be original means to go back to the origins. According to Nietzsche Socrates has destroyed Greek tragedy, while Bacon destroyed the English one. Oddly enough, Bacon is thought to be one of the realities behind which Shakespeare is. Here there are the literary authors who went against tragedy: Francis Bacon; William Blake; middle-class Puritans; Thomas Browne; Descartes. 1.5. THE SHAKESPEARE CANON During his lifetime Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, more than 154 sonnets, 2 short poems and some verses. Before 1616 only eighteen plays appeared in quarto editions, but there is no evidence that he authorized the publication of any of them. In fact not all of them offer reliable texts, so that they are known as bad quartos. After 61 his death in 1623 his former fellow-actors Henry Condell and John Heminge published his works in Folio with other eighteen never released before. The first Folio was better edited than quartos and it is considered the landmark of all of Shakespeare’s editions. Third and last In-folio, published in 1664, added to the 1616 Folio Pericles and six apocryphal works. We know only the dates of their performance and they were arranged under the headings of Comedies, Tragedies and Histories. 1.5.1.THE FIRST PHASE FOR SHAKESPEARE'S DRAMATIC CAREER (15901596) Shakespeare started his career as a playwright in 1590 by revising the works of other men. Given that he was a beginner, in this first phase he showed little originality: his original models were Marlowe for „Henry VI“ and „Richard II“, Plautus for The Comedy of Errors, Seneca for Titus Andronicus, Ariosto in „The Taming of the Shrew“, Greene in „The Two Gentlemen of Verona“, and Lyly for „Love's Labour's Lost“. On the contrary the works that ended this first phase were „Romeo and Juliet“, „Richard II“, and „A Midsummer-Night's Dream“, they were brand-new and showed his original personality. 1.5.2.THE SECOND PHASE (1597-1600) During this period just „Julius Caesar“ was a tragedy, the others were light comedies and history plays. The History plays were among Shakespeare's great achievements because of their style and plot such as „Henry IV“ and „Henry V“ that with „Richard II“ analysed an important part of English history. The comedies were more romantic and light-hearted such as „The Merchant of Venice“ and „Twelfth Night“. 62 1.5.3.THE THIRD PHASE (1600-1608) The third phase is the most famous one since he wrote his most well-known plays such as the so-called dark comedies „Troilus and Cressida“, „All's Well that Ends Well“, and „Measure for Measure“, the four great tragedies „Hamlet“, „Othello“, „King Lear“ and „Macbeth“, and finally the two final Roman plays of „Antony and Cleopatra“ and „Coriolanus“. All of these in addition to „The Merry Wives of Windsor“. The light-hearted atmosphere of before is replaced by pessimism anddisillusionment and they were identified as dark and bitter. He also changed his view on love, no more idealized but felt as an obscure life urge. Evil, visualised in tragedies as part of human being, gave way to redemption with the fourth and last phase. 1.5.4.THE FOURTH PHASE (1608- 1613) In this phase Shakespeare wrote redemption plays as „Cymbeline“, „The Winter's Tale“ and „The Tempest“, a masterpiece. 1.6. 16 PERSONALITIES The name of William Shakespeare appears on the list of REAL famous INFPT. Even if these initials may seem quite odd, they have a particular meaning and result from an accurate study on human personalities. Every day on facebook or other online platforms we enjoy several quizzes that can tell us something more about ourselves. Not all of them are thorough, except for this one. It is based on Carl Gustav Jung31's philosophy, dated back to early 20th Century, and on the research 31 Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961), often referred to as C. G. Jung, was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. His work has been influential not only in psychiatry but also in philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, literature, and religious studies. Jung created some of the best known psychological concepts, including the archetype, the collective unconscious, the complex, and extraversion and introversion, that are used for this test. 63 carried out by Katherine Cook Briggs, who was a teacher with an avid interest in personality typing. The test lasts about 12 minutes. One can answer questions by agreeing or disagreeing in a scale of values from one to three. At the end of the quiz, interviewees will see some initials with a table including several parameters, which are Mind, Energy, Nature, Tactics and Identity. • Mind shows how we interact with other people; • Energy determines how we see the world and process information; • Tactics reflects our approach to work, planning and decision-making; • Nature shows how we cope with emotions; • Identity underpins all other aspects, showing our confidence with our abilities and decisions. These personalities are divided into four groups; each of these groups had other four variants. Initials such as INFP-T describe this typology: • Analysts include Architect, Logician, Commander and Debater • Diplomats include Advocate, Mediator, Protagonist and Campaigner • Sentinels include Logistician, Defender, Executive and Consul • Explorers include Virtuoso, Adventurer, Entrepreneur and Entertainer T and A, E and I, N and S, T and F, P and J are the letters at stake. They cannot be matched between them but must be matched with the letter of the other pairs. T is the opposite of A, N is the opposite of S, E is the opposite of I and so on. T and A mean Turbulent and Assertive individuals and they refer to the Identity aspect, N and S mean Intuitive and observant individuals respectively and refer to the Energy aspect. However T also stands for Thinking individuals and F for feeling ones, which refer to the nature of a person. P and J refer to tactics, J is the initial for Judging individuals and P for prospecting individuals. As a consequence, INFP-T is the acronym of an introverted, intuitive, feeling, prospecting individual also characterised from T that means self-conscious people and sensitive to stress. 64 Other famous INFP-T are J.R.R Tolkien, Bjork, Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts, Lisa Kudrow, Tom Hiddleston, Omero, Virgilio. 1.7. 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE • Shakespeare’s father held a lot of different jobs, and at one point got paid to drink beer. • Shakespeare married an older woman who was three months pregnant at the time • Shakespeare's parents were probably illiterate, and his children almost certainly were. • Nobody knows what Shakespeare did between 1585 and 1592. • Shakespeare's plays gave birth to hundreds of familiar terms. • Neither Shakespeare could write his own name • Shakespeare's epitaph wards off would-be grave robbers with a curse • Shakespeare wore a gold hoop earring • 200 million starlings from North America were invented by Shakespeare • Some people think Shakespeare was a fraud 1.8. TODAY STRATFORD-UPON-AVON Whoever liked going to visit Stratford-upon-Avon today would find something about Shakespeare, eat and drink well by testing the traditional British cuisine. The one about Shakespeare's life includes the visit in many houses, which belonged to Shakespeare's family. Essentially they are five. 65 SHAKESPEARE'S HOUSE This house is placed in Henley Street. As well as the other buildings in Tudor England, Shakespeare's house was in typical half-timbered architecture, which means that it was basically composed of timber frames filled with plaster, brick or wattle and daub. In some parts of Germany this style has completely changed the urban structure and they are known as Fachwerkhäuser. Half-timbered houses remind of bucolic embroidery. To clarify, this style of construction is also used in the American TV-show Extreme make over home edition but it is not visible from the outside. Nowadays, the house is a museum showing many documents related to the life of the poet and that era. The tour ends in the surrounding garden. NEW PLACE Shakespeare started to live at New Place in 1597 and remained there until his death. It was tore down in the eighteenth century, nonetheless fundaments are still visible including his Elizabethan node garden. One enters this house through the adjacent house, called Nash's house, which has the typical interior design of 1600. On the second floor there is an entire section dedicated to Shakespeare. HALL'S CROFT Hall's Croft is Susanna's first house, where she lived with her husband. In the nearby of Holy Trinity Church, where her father is buried. Nowadays, there is an exhibition of Susanna's husband medical equipment, dr. Hall. Medical herbs can also be tasted and smelled in the tea room on the ground floor, which has a practical guide for tourists. ANNE HATHAWAY'S COTTAGE Anne Hathaway is not the actress we know today, the girl with the big eyes from the movie "The Devil wears Prada". Actually she was Shakespeare's wife, eight years his senior and this cottage is the house where she had lived before she got 66 married. An irregular stone flagged path takes to the entrance, winding wooden staircase leads the first floor and then to the gift shop. Outside there is Shakespeare's tree garden. MARY ARDEN'S HOUSE The house of Shakespeare's mother is not in Stratford but few miles away, in Wilmcote. Even in this case, we have a half-timbered house. Inside, there is a museum dedicated to the Bard. But Wilmcote also hosts the Shakespeare countryside museum with daily demonstrations of falcon birds, a blacksmith's forge and a duck pond and two historic farms. Other attractions SHAKESPEARE CENTRE LIBRARY From the second half of nineteenth century this library is made up of the most important libraries of the city, including the library of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH This ancient church provides a moment of calm away from the bustle of the town. Both the courtyard and the churchyard itself are breathtakingly beautiful. In the little shop you can even buy a copy of the Magna Charta on a roll in a tube in both authentic Latin text and a handy English translation for £3.50. There are a lot of accommodations such as bed and breakfasts and luxurious hotels. Restaurants, tea shops, pubs and inns offer delicious food, both national and international. Outside they have beautiful courtyard gardens and offer alfresco dining at lunch, dinner or afternoon teas. Town trail, local walks and Christine Lee fountain, Antiques. The Oxford House College is a very good school. In closing, to the tune of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" why don't you take a romantic break in beautiful restful river walks along the banks of the peaceful Avon? 67 2.CRIMES OF PASSION AND THE TRAGEDY OF “OTHELLO THE MOOR OF VENICE” 2.1. “OTHELLO, THE MOOR OF VENICE” If we went through all the Shakespeare tragedies, it would remain just one main theme: the break of the most important emotional bonds. In Macbeth the relationship between the king and his court fails, in King Lear the father-daughter relationship, in Othello the husband and wife relationship instead. Even if the tragedy of Othello has been strongly criticised during history, sometimes suffering from the loss of self esteem given that it has been considered the minor tragedy, even after centuries we still like and are mesmerized by "Othello, the Moor of Venice". A doubtful record on the Revel's Accounts says that the King's men performed this tragedy before the king and his court in 1604 for the first time. This statement together with the sources used by Shakespeare and a stylistic analysis of the text let the experts think that it was composed in a period that goes from 1602-1604: shortly after dark comedies and Hamlet, and before the other three tragedies of the maturity: King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra. 2.1.1.THE SOURCES The main source for Othello was the novella called the Hecatommithi, written in 1565 by the Italian author, Cinthio. It was an Italian story so experts think that Shakespeare read the English translation that now is lost, or maybe the French version by Gabriel Chappuys of 1584. These sources gleaned the information from Plinius and his Naturalis Historia, translated by Philemon Holland of 1601 and from a military historical work of 1603 by Richard Knolles, named General History of the Turks, dedicated to King James I who had an avid interest in Venetian-Turkish wars. 68 In order to write about the Venetian reality he read the English version of De Magistratibus et Republica Venetorum by Gasparo Contarini32 belonged to 1543. Shakespeare did not simply reconsider the original text, but he revolutionises the plot with integrity and talent, in order to make the work an interesting and engaging novel, even contemporary. Cinthio had thought about a Iago, whose motive for wanting to destroy Othello was only his jealousy of Desdemona, who loved the Moor instead. On the contrary, Shakespeare invented a Iago, whose first motive was his envy and resentment about Othello, he revolutionised Emilia's role, Iago's wife, from subjugated partner in crime to an unaware one, and moved Cassio to the background. To clarify, Cassio still remains the scapegoat but with a totally different sense of dramatic intensity. The thing that is completely different from Cinthio's version is the dynamic of crimes. In Cinthio's version Desdemona was killed with a sock filled with sand by Iago and Othello, it is Shakespeare who conceived it as a crime of passion, as forensic experts would say. In the original version the Moor is killed by Desdemona's family and Iago executed for other crimes, while Shakespeare makes Othello a suicide victim after having realised his heinous act. 2.1.2.THE CHARACTERS Othello: Othello is called the Moor of Venice because he is a black man from North-Africa, but he has capital letter in his name because he is strong as general and kind. His dramatic stories about his early life in those exotic lands make young Desdemona fall in love with him. Ironically, however, his big-boned structure does not coincide with a solid self-esteem. It is weak. Iago's words and suppositions are sufficient enough to drive him crazy. The choice of a black main character is due to three reasons: bring out the political and racial component of the tale; express a subtle metaphor that refers to the black part of human soul; support the Latin 32 Gasparo Contarini (1483 – 1542) was an Italian diplomat, cardinal and Bishop of Belluno. He was one of the first proponents of the dialogue with Protestants, after the Reformation. 69 locution of homo faber fortunae suae. Man would better stand up for himself, because no one does it for him. „Our bodies are like gardens and our willpower is like the gardener. Depending on what we plant—weeds or lettuce, or one kind of herb rather than a variety, the garden will either be barren and useless, or rich and productive.“ („Othello“, act I, scene III, vv.320-326). Iago: Iago is Othello's ensign, or standard-bearer, and the villain of the play, which means evil. He said he hates the Moor, because he had preferred Cassio to him for the role of lieutenant in the army. As well as in the army also in life ensign role is not very essential and that hurts Iago's male pride and military honour. Even if he has white skin he metaphorically becomes the tar which dirties everything and everyone. Despite the military motivation of his hate towards the Moor and Cassio he is characterised by delight in manipulation and destruction. It is Iago who pronounces the sentence about green-eyed monster, which is very famous nowadays. Desdemona:Desdemona is the daughter of Venetian senator Brabanzio, she is beautiful inside and out, pure and meek, and self-possessed. She and Othello are married before the play begins. She does not trust Iago and defends her marriage. When she meets Othello for the first time, she is mesmerised by his tales given that she was a girl and she could not participate in social life, and those exotic lands make her travel to other worlds. Even before she breathes her last breath she blames herself for suicide. Rumours say she died virgin and to the tune of the song "Piangea cantando". Cassio:Cassio is Othello's lieutenant. He is an inexperienced soldier but a good friend of Othello and Desdemona, and worked as accountant in Florence. This character is light-hearted, good-natured and a handsome and young fellow. He is very popular among women. Truly devoted to Othello, Cassio is extremely ashamed after being implicated in a drunken brawl on Cyprus and losing his place as lieutenant. Desdemona tries to help Cassio before Othello, but Iago takes advantage of their friendship for his evil project. Emilia:Emilia is Iago's wife and Desdemona's attendant. If it is true that opposites attract, Iago and Emilia are a perfect illustration of this. Faithful to her 70 sense of justice, she prefers committing suicide and accuses her husband of crime before the local Authorities. She dies to the tune of the song "Piangea cantando" and aware of having unintentionally contributed to the evil plan by giving him the famous handkerchief, which proves Desdemona's fake betrayal. Brabanzio: Brabanzio is the senator of Venice and Desdemona's father. He is old and racist. As a friend of Othello, Brabanzio feels betrayed when the general marries his daughter in secret. His statement gives way to Othello's doubts. Keep an eye on her, Moor. She lied to me, and she may lie to you. (“Othello”,Brabanzio, act I, scene III,vv.292-293). Roderigo: Roderigo is a Venetian nobleman. He is enamoured with Desdemona and is ready for anything in order to seduce her. For this reason he becomes Iago's partner in crime. Tricked from the ensign's words, just at the end of the plot he realises he had been fooled, and he is killed by him. Starting from the analysis of the characters one can easily understand the entire plot of the tragedy. Although the tragedy is named after Othello, gradually Iago becomes as important as Othello, even more. In fact, from a purely scenic point of view, it happens that the actors who play Othello and Iago, respectively, exchange their roles. It can be said that the two characters are two sides of the same coin. Actually one of them plans the crime and the other commits the murder. 2.1.3.TIME AND LOCATION AND THE CONCEPT OF VILLAIN The choice of time and location in this case may alter the linear comprehension of the plot, which is pretty simple on the contrary. Actually, authors after him have tried to avoid this problem. Shakespeare's tragedy lasts 36 hours and the locations are two, Venice and Cyprus, with an expedient that refers to the Turkish wars. However limited and ssuffocating, time has a dramatic significance here: to create in the audience feelings of anxiety and turmoil. Even the space gradually becomes claustrophobic: from island, castle, to bedroom where the murder is committed. 71 Places go hand in hand with the ambiguous relationships between the characters. They are characterised by duality of light and shadow, attraction and repulsion, allegiance and hatred, between what is spoken and what is left unsaid. Moreover, for the first time Shakespeare uses the theme of jealousy in a tragedy and not in a comedy. Maybe this tragedy puts in evidence the superiority of mind over physical excellence. Iago is not good-looking, he does not have a fine physique but he has something that distinguishes the world's most heinous serial killers: intelligence, clarity of thought and villainy. Iago is the first example of villain. On the scene the role of villain includes: • Director and actor of the practical implementation of the plan; • Perverse psychologist and psychiatrist; • Deceiver of minds. He or she evokes in others false visions, ghosts, idols which destroy harmony; • Speaks through litotes33. As a matter of fact, people's physical aspect is correlated closely with their psychological aspect and no one knows that better than a criminal profiler. The history of criminal profiling has its roots in the Middle Ages- Shakespeare's age- and includes other subjects such as physiognomy, constitutionalism, psychology, criminology and psychiatry, not forgetting the fundamental role of detective fiction by Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. Physiognomy, in particular, defines the interaction between the two abovementioned human aspects. Physiognomy (from the Gk. physis meaning "nature" and gnomon meaning "judge" or "interpreter") consists in the interpretation of one's personality on the basis of her or his outer appearance. Aristotle is considered the founding father of this pseudoscience thanks to his History of Animals. Thanks to him we identify some abstract concepts with such animals: energy with lions, 33 Litotes is a figure of speech consisting of an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite. 72 shrewdnesswith foxes, laziness with sloths. Other authors who cherished the subject were Cicero with his De Fato, Tacitus, Suetonius, Seneca, Plinius, etc. It became famous thanks to De animalibus by Pompeius Trogus. In the Arabic world physiognomy has a big influence over sultans in the selection of their assistants and for occupations. In the Middle Ages, scholastic philosophy began to approach physiognomy between the XII and the XIII century. In some textbooks belonging to 1500 appeared the first images of both astrological symbol and parts of face. We must also remember Magnus Hundt, Margarita Philosophica by Gregory Reisch , Chiromantia by Joan de Hayn. Gerolamo Cardano with his Metoscopia and Giovanni Battista Della Porta with his De Humana Physionomia. Finally, Shakespeare also appears on the list of these literary men citing a part in Julius Caesar, when Caesar talking to Antony about Cassius says: That Cassius over there has a lean and hungry look. He thinks too much. He rarely smiles. Men like him will never be comfortable while someone ranks higher than themselves. Men like him are dangerous. („Othello“, act I, scene II, vv.293). 2.1.4.IAGO'S USE OF LANGUAGE There is an obvious contrast between Othello's hyperbolic language and the prosaic brevity of Iago's speeches. His prose is always thought, contemplated, mental, and also negative, at times vulgar by using puns, colourful expressions and sexually explicit terms. His voice sounds like the brutalities in human life, like the muck of earth. He feels resentment especially towards women. The angelic vision of woman such as the Virgin Mary and Dante Alighieri’s lover, Beatrice, stands in total contrast to his idea of woman, according to which she is a den for vices. Even in act V scene V he shows the same attitude towards his wife Emilia, who blames him for voluntary manslaughter. Moreover, he reduces the feeling of love to mere sex. The feeling, which leads Iago to his heinous act, is the so-called "power of blackness". In a passage Iago seems to justify his hatred towards the Moor by two essential reasons: the choice of Cassio in his place in the army and the suspicion that the Moor had made love with Emilia. 73 “I do hate him, I swear. "I've already chosen my lieutenant,” he says. And who does he choose? A guy who knows more about numbers than fighting! This guy from Florence named Michael Cassio. He has a pretty wife but he can’t even control her. And he’s definitely never commanded men in battle. He’s got no more hands-on knowledge of warfare than an old woman—unless you count what he’s read in books.”34 Although Iago is a good speaker the achievement of his goal should also be attributed to his victims. None of them was able to defend themselves from his insinuations. The inversion of roles between him and Othello also occurs from a linguistic point of view. Othello's images are military, regal, fantastic, exotic and his love for Desdemona implies absolute purity, so much so that the girl is believed to die without having consumed the first act of sexual intercourse. When Iago's words influence Othello's mind, the black character starts to use a more vulgar language based on images of betrayal, of women in heat as animals. 2.1.5.PARADOX As well as in the tragedies of "Hamlet, prince of Denmark", "Antony and Cleopatra" and "King Lear" paradox rules. Iago is taken as honest, Othello as a rapist and Desdemona as adulterous. This is due to a mature Shakespeare, who thinks that there is a hidden vulnerability in being powerful. The other dualities in the play 34 Verses in modern English of “Othello”, act I, scene I, vv.8-25. In the original version: “Despise me If I do not. Three great ones of the city (In personal suit to make me his lieutenant) Off-capped to him, and by the faith of man I know my price, I am worth no worse a place. But he (as loving his own pride and purposes) Evades them with a bombast circumstance Horribly stuffed with epithets of war, And in conclusion Nonsuits my mediators. For “Certes,” says he, “I have already chose my officer.” And what was he? Forsooth, a great arithmetician, One Michael Cassio, a Florentine (A fellow almost damned in a fair wife) That never set a squadron in the field, Nor the division of a battle knows More than a spinster.” 74 are heaven and earth, day and night, black and verbal magic, knowledge and ignorance, Thanatos and Eros the negritude of Othello and the whiteness of his honesty, Iago's light skin and the darkness of his soul. Last but not least is the paradox of time: Desdemona would have never had enough time to commit adultery, in fact it is said that Shakespeare wanted to create a double time scheme: the first refers to the real plot, while the second to the psychological drama in it. However, critics agree on the fact that these contradictions are not caused by Shakespeare' s inattention but from his talent in making the impossible possible, by staging an illusory and deceitful tragedy, to say the least. 2.2. MORBID JEALOUSY Morbid jealousy, also known as Othello’s syndrome or delusional jealousy, is a psychological disorder in which a person is preoccupied with the thought that their spouse or sexual partner is being unfaithful without having any real proof, along with socially unacceptable or abnormal behaviour related to these thoughts. The most common cited forms of psychopathology in morbid jealousy are delusions and obsessions. It is considered a subtype of delusional disorder. 2.3.MOST EVIL: CRIME OF PASSION The term crime means an unlawful act punishable by a state. As already underlined in the introduction, people like crime. It's the law of sublime. In fact, over the last years, palimpsests of many Italian mass media companies from Mediaset to Rai, even Sky have intensified true crime TV shows, just think about TV shows as Quarto Grado and Amore Criminale, broadcasted on the television stations of Rete 4 and Rai 2, respectively. As of August 2015 Giallo channel broadcasts a TV show called Anatomia di una mente criminale (Most Evil in the English version). On the 75 show, forensic psychiatrist Michael Stone of Columbia University, New York, consults archive material, police reports, feature stories, and he speaks to killers in person. These offenders include serial killers, mass murderers, murderers and psychopaths. Professor Stone's aim, which he has pursued in his career, is to quantify evil. Once he has analyzed modus operandi, victim typology, doctor Stone classifies the killer on a scale that Stone himself has developed. This scale is divided into 22 levels. I choose Othello since crimes of passion are in Italy the most perpetrated ones according to statistics. The spread of these violations is the reason why mass media have focused public attention on the matter. For doctor Stone, the triggering factor for murder is, as Shakespeare also says, the green-eyed monster, called jealousy. Crimes of passion represent a big challenge for forensic experts because the offenders may never have been violent before neither had a criminal history. Doctor Stone says exactly these words: „Jealousy is an emotion that all of us can experience sometimes, and it isn't something we have much control over. Once we feel it, it can reach the darkest sides of our mind.“ Crimes of passion are also defined as justifiable, since the victim becomes the murderer at once. Love crimes generally occupy the second position on the scale but it is not always like that. Some peculiarities of the murderer can make it also occupy higher positions. These peculiarities are the degree of violence, and the lack of remorse. No couple is free from jealousy, neither the purest ones. If jealousy affects a lover's mind again and again, it turns into obsession and then perversion. When the partner leaves us, we feel abandoned and this provokes rage. Doctor Helen Fisher Professor at Rutgers University has studied romantic attraction for years, but she recently wanted to understand the darkest sides of love. Therefore, she interviewed fifteen parted lovers and made them undergo functional magnetic resonance. The experiment has evinced that hatred and love are interconnected emotions. 76 Professor Randy Larson is a personality psychologist at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. On a psychological research he discovered that manifestation of jealousy differs across sexes. By using electrodes on his patients, he has considered three parameters: Perspiration level, heart rate, involuntary body movements. While men mostly fear physical betrayal, women fear the emotional one. Murders that happen because of jealousy have common characteristics: they are personal, heinous, and they are not premeditated. Offenders use available weapons, whatever they are. Othello, for example, kills Desdemona with a pillow in their master bedroom. 2.4. ITALIAN CRIME NEWS: MELANIA REA AND ELENA CESTE The crime reports in mass media are an everyday occurrence. People know about them when they drink coffee in the morning, eat pasta for lunch, and even at dinnertime watching television programs such as Quarto Grado hosted by good old Salvo Sottile. Given that the case of Othello is based on a crime of passion in this chapter I am going to take just them into account. According to the Ministry of Interior murders committed in Italy between August 2012 and July 2014 amount to 320 sexual offences, 206 of which are femicides. Two of them are definitely the Melania Rea and Elena Ceste murders, which come closest to the tragedy of Othello: in both cases the husband is the offender and the wife the victim. The leading causes are jealousy and fury. However, from a psychological point of view in which way are Salvatore Parolisi and Michele Buoninconti, similar to the Moor? Let's check it out. THE FACT On 18th April 2011 Corporal Major Salvatore Parolisi , who was thirty-four at that time, notifies the Police of his wife's disappearance. The woman is Carmela Melania Rea, a 29 year old girl. The Parolisi family comes from Naples 77 province but lives in Folignano (Ascoli Piceno). They go on a short trip in Pianoro di San Marco together with their little daughter Vittoria. He said to the Police that while he was playing with the child, Melania went to the toilet and never came back. Researches last 48 hours: in the afternoon of 20th April 2011, an anonymous tip told the Police that they would find a corpse in Ripe di Civitella (Teramo), in the nearby of Casermette, the place where Parolisi instructs female recruits. The corpse belongs to Melania Rea. It has a cut to the throat made from behind, typical in military actions. In addition to 35 post-mortem wounds. From the examination of the body, the examiners observed a swastika on the back and two syringes, one on her groin and the other in the neck. No sign of sexual abuse. Prosecutors think Melania knew her killer. Evidence converged against Salvatore, Melania's husband. The motive for murder was his secret love affair with one of his colleagues. Rumours say of sex in barracks in exchange for favours and permits. Others say he had to meet his lover's parents during the Easter holidays. On the 27th of May 2015 this story ended. Giancarlo Costagliola, Assistant Attorney General, asks for a recalculation of the sentence from thirty to twenty years of prison. He said twenty years were the maximum penalty after the judgement of the Supreme Court, which had ruled out the aggravating circumstance of cruelty. This case shows that family's fear of strangers is unnecessary. In fact in the vast majority of cases of femicides the victims know their murderers, who can be their partner or husband. „In criminal matters, there is a valid axiom for a civilized country like ours, according to which people kill only the ones they know, are killed by them or by someone who knows us.“ Jacques Roubaud35 "Hortense is abducted" According to criminal profiling there is a classification of homicide victims. Melania and Desdemona can be definitely mentioned in the category of the so-called "victims who attack", to which belongs even the subcategory of the 35 Jacques Roubaud is a French poet and mathematician. 78 "provocative victims". Melania knew about her husband’s several affairs, thus she had started to refuse him many times. In the same way Desdemona confirms Othello's suspicions unwittingly and fights for Cassio's role of lieutenant in the army; in a sense they both contribute to their deaths. Moreover, both Parolisi and Othello worked in the army. Another Italian crime of passion, which has captivated audience attention, is the Elena Ceste murder. According to the Ministry of the Interior in Italy about 30.000 women have disappeared over the last forty years. This number is increasing. THE FACT On 24th January in Castigliole d'Asti, in Piedmont, the thirty-seven year old woman Elena Ceste disappeared. Her family is the typical pious family. Michele Buoninconti, her husband, is a firefighter and she is a housewife, the couple has four children. She hardly ever goes out. Neighbours saw her for the last time that morning at quarter past eight, while Michele was taking the children to school. When he came back home, at half past eight, he told the Police Elena had disappeared. The mobile phone and her glasses, without which she could not see, were left on the grass in their garden, as if she was naked at the moment of the getaway in the middle of the winter. Police suspected suicide at first, but text messages on her phone made them suspect she had secret love affairs. Even Buoninconti said that his wife had avowed her guilt. By doing so, Michele had made the blame fall upon him unwittingly. On 18th October 2014, during the cleaning of a canal in Isola d'Asti, near their house, a bulldozer brought up human remains. DNA testing made it clear these belonged to Elena Ceste. However, given what was left of her, an autopsy could not establish the cause of death. On 29th January 2015 he was convicted for the murder of his wife in a fit of jealousy. Elena is as naive as Desdemona as to the trust towards their husbands. Their honesty was their death sentence. Moreover, although Elena was socially of lower birth than Desdemona, they had similar lifestyles: limited to the four walls of their houses and were subordinate to their husbands. In both cases there is 79 evidence of betrayal: in Othello's tragedy there is the handkerchief while in this modern-day tragedy there was a video containing sex scenes between her and her lover. Another analogy concerns the crime scene and the murder weapon: both Elena and Desdemona were suffocated with a pillow in their master bedroom. Before the Court Michele justified himself in the same way Othello did before Emilia IN FICTION: EMILIA „Then she was even more an angel, and you’re an even blacker devil!“ („Othello“, act V, scene II, vv.132). OTHELLO „She cheated on me, and she was a whore. She was fickle and unfaithful, like water. If she’d been faithful to me, I never would have given her up, not even if God himself offered me a jewel as big as a planet in exchange for her.“ („Othello“, act V, scene II, vv.136, 144-147). IN REAL LIFE: MICHELE BUONINCONTI I killed her because I feared she had become an unfaithful wife and an improper mother, who only aimed at cultivating virtual relationships by computer; therefore she had to be corrected. In this modern context we can conclude that Michele Buoninconti and Salvatore Parolisi are both Iago and Othello. As well as Iago Michele tried to trick his children's minds by speaking ill of her mother in order to justify his brutal act. „With your mother- he said- I thought I had succeeded in making her become a woman, but then she saw something new, whatever it was, I really don't know! Eighteen years of my life to correct her, gone down the drain.“ Judge calls it intimidating method. 80 2.5.SHAKESPEARE AND RACE In the old age black was not counted fair, Or if it were it bore not beauty’s name; But now is black beauty’s successive heir, And beauty slandered with a bastard shame, more an angel, and you’re an even blacker devil! For since each hand hath put on nature’s power, Fairing the foul with art’s false borrowed face, Sweet beauty hath no name, no holy bower, But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace. Therefore my mistress’ eyes are raven black, Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem At such who, not born fair, no beauty lack, Slandering creation with a false esteem: Yet so they mourn, becoming of their woe, That every tongue says beauty should look so. (Sonnet 127 by William Shakespeare) Another crucial point in the tragedy of "Othello, the Moor of Venice" is the race and its consequence. I think we should take this matter into account, given that migrant chaos is currently an everyday occurrence. Shakespeare sonnet 127 confirms that these outsiders have always existed even at the time of Shakespeare. Also Shakespeare and English Renaissance scholar Imtiaz Habib, Old Dominion associate professor of English confirm their existence in his "Shakespeare and Race", a book that examines the political, social and cultural impact of Shakespeare’s approach to the racial issues contained within his plays. British adventurers sailed to African shores, kidnapped inhabitants and enslaved them. 81 Initially, Habib concludes in Shakespeare and Race, that transported Africans “existed initially as a miscellaneous assemblage of exotic, personally possessed decorative fetishes and human curiosities, and constituted a totally culturally unrecorded and hence silent and invisible community.” Gradually they were absorbed into society and lived in specially set- up areas, given Christian names and worked as laborers, menial workers, servants, maids and, for the aristocracy, entertainers. Parish registers and Lady Anne Clifford's diary demonstrate that. Shakespeare liked going and visiting foreigner people and thinking of their difference, sometimes he played before them and might have had a love affair with a black woman, although he knew it could not work because of his family. This fact influenced his works and life. People hardly distinguished foreigners. They made confusion among Arabs, Indians, south Asians and pre-Columbian Americans. 2.6. TODAY'S MIGRANT CRISIS Harsh realities in the Middle East (Syria, Iraq), Africa (Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Gambia), South Asia and Central Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh), and the Western Balkans (Kosovo, Albania) urge people to come to Europe and apply for asylum. Migrants aim at living in Northern Europe, therefore they need to cross Italy, Austria, Hungary and so on. Because of ISIS, they come by sea on rafts in terrible conditions. The term Migrant crisis entered our houses as of April 2015, when these poor wretches started to die by sinking in the Mediterranean sea. Many European leaders have tried to cope with this emergency increasing border patrol operations, hosting them in train stations and refugee camps provided with staff. On the contrary, other conservative Countries have decided to reintroduce border controls within the Schengen area. Migrant chaos, however, is one of the modern-day aspects of foreigners in Europe. While America can be defined a multiethnic society, Europe still has a long way to go. The ones responsible for this situation are not only politicians but some foreigners themselves, who everyday act against the weakest, such as elderly and disabled people. 82 It would be great if men's problems could be solved through theatre, through Shakespeare. What I mean is, Jan Kott author of the book "Shakespeare nostro contemporaneo" said that Hamlet was like a sponge, once it gets wet in a new liquid that is metaphorically a new contest, all of a sudden, it becomes modern. Hamlet is meant to be a historical chronicle, murder mystery or philosophical drama. Hamlet is, as Kott says, the tragedy of imposed situations and which situation is more imposed than the one made by Isis? In the end, we could develop a new topic based on the Shakespearian tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark, in which Hamlet is a Syrian and speaks of his own tragedy. 83 3.FAMILY MURDERS AND THE TRAGEDY OF "KING LEAR" 3.1. “KING LEAR “ 3.1.1.THE PLOT Once upon a time there was a king, whose name was Lear. He ruled Britain. Having become old, as well as Pope Benedict XVI and former President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, he decided to leave the throne and to divide his realm among his three daughters: Goneril, Ragan and Cordelia. Although the old man preferred the youngest one, Cordelia, to the others, he wanted to give all his daughters an opportunity: the one who had sung the best praises to her father, would have gained the biggest part of his fortune. The evil personalities of the two elder daughters disadvantaged Cordelia who was not a good speaker and was exiled. Only the King of France was fascinated by her honesty and married her even if she had been disinherited. Therefore, Lear announced he would live alternately with Goneril and Regan and their husbands, respectively the Dukes of Albany and Cornwall. Meanwhile another subplot occurs: the story of the Earl of Gloucester. Gloucester had two sons, one legitimate and the other not. Edmund, the illegitimate one, was bad and ambitious while Edgard the biological child was good. Edmund tricked their father Gloucester with a forged letter, making him think Edgar had planned to usurp the estate. Once Goneril and Ragan had had the realm, Lear noticed that they did not respect him anymore and missed his daughter Cordelia. While Lear was leaving the palace, Edmund betrayed Gloucester to Cornwall, Regan and Goneril. When Cordelia knew the situation left France to go and help her father. Father and daughter were taken prisoners by Edmund, who was then killed by Edgard. Before he died, he confessed his faults. Tragedy ends with Lear, who has Cordelia dying in his arms and says: And my poor fool was hanged.— No, no, no life left? Why should a dog or horse or rat have life, but not you? You’ll never come to me again, never, never, never, never, never. —Please help me undo this button. 84 Thank you, sir. Do you see that? Look at her. Look, her lips. Look there, look there. Oh, oh, oh, oh. (He dies) 3.1.2.THE SOURCES The story of King Lear and his three daughters is an old tale, well known in England for centuries before Shakespeare wrote the definitive play on the subject. The first English account of Lear can be found in the History of the Kings of Britain, written by Geoffrey Monmouth in 1135. Monmouth’s account spawned several 16thcentury narratives about Lear, including renderings in Holinshed's Chronicles (first edition, 1577) and in The Mirror for Magistrates (1574). Even the great poet Edmund Spenser recounted Lear's tragedy in Canto 10, Book II of The Faerie Queen (1590). All of the aforementioned versions of the tale, and possibly dozens more, were readily available to Shakespeare and shaped the main plot of his own drama. However, it is clear that Shakespeare relied chiefly on King Leir, fully titled The True Chronicle History of King Leir, and his three daughters, Gonorill, Ragan, and Cordella, the anonymous play published twelve years before the first recorded performance of Shakespeare's King Lear. 3.1.3.THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE TRAGEDY OF KING LEAR King Lear: Lear is the king of Britain, but he has lost his good reputation. He is considered to be one of the hardest characters to be played in the Shakespearian drama. He has become spoilt, childish, instinctive and someone who judges by appearances. His eldest daughters hate him while the youngest one feels a filial devotion and loyalty. Cordelia: Cordelia is subordinate to duty. She is shy, not coquettish; her major shortcoming is in being undemonstrative. She cannot stand her sisters and she knows 85 they are liars. Her honesty in this tragic world, where evil annihilates good, cannot exist. Her honesty is her death sentence, just like Desdemona’s. Regan and Goneril: They are the eldest sisters and they are supposed to be diabolical creations, just like Lady Macbeth. They both love Edmund. They can be compared to Cinderella's stepsisters: Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine. They are ugly, villain and envious of Cordelia's qualities. Edmund: Edmund is Gloucester's illegitimate son. He cannot stand his condition and hates his stepfather for wanting Edgard to have all the inheritance. As well as Iago he plans a diabolical project based on misconceptions and misunderstandings. If he fails he has nothing to lose and lot to gain if he wins. Edgar: Gloucester's legitimate son. He plays different roles. Starting from the one of being a gullible fool, he then disguises himself as mad beggar to evade his father's men and finally he becomes a hero to avenge his brother's treason. His character perfectly reveals the grotesque plot. The Earl of Gloucester: Gloucester is an Earl and is devoted to the king. He is an adulterer for having had a bastard son. His fate is parallel to Lear's. He is blind. In the first part of the drama is a purely metaphorical blindness, in the last part it becomes real. The beauty in this tragedy lies in the fact that each character is free from context. If they were put in another context they would have the same force and impact on the audience. Edmund, Goneril and Ragan might be perfect for being the characters of real life family tragedies. They all present very interesting criminal profiles. Today more than yesterday, the father and child relationship is a challenge for experts. The father figure is very important, especially for female children and their development. So, I wonder now if Regan and Goneril are simply selfish by nature or because of a bad relationship with their father. And then, why Cordelia did not feel the same? What about Edmund, who felt resentment towards his father instead of cherishing him? Critics think Edmund is very similar to Iago, but in the very end Edmund repents his sins unlike the Venetian ensign. It would be interesting if the Shakespearian villains took their own revenge by revisiting Shakespearian 86 plays; a kind of Disney animated spin-off films. Just consider Maleficent, the 2014 American dark fantasy movie based on the antagonist of Walt Disney's 1959 film "Sleeping Beauty". 3.1.4.THE THEMES OF THE TRAGEDY OF"KING LEAR" The main theme in "King Lear" is the fall and decline of the world. In this specific case the world is the court, where the royal family lives. As a matter of fact tragedy is about family. Family can give us birth or simply be the place where we grow up and become responsible adults. Family is the most important context of human society. If family is destroyed, so is our world. Unlike the other tragedies of Maturity and historical chronicles the context in which the story takes place is not repairable. Heroes like Fortebraccio do not exist, neither like Malcolm. There is such perfect balance between heroes and villains, good and evil, since there are six positive and six negative characters. At the end there are three survivors: Edgard, the Duke of Albany and the Earl of Kent. Cordelia is hanged while Goneril and Regan die as criminals and adulterers. The second theme is role reversal. The king becomes the fool, the fool becomes wise, seeing ones become blind, rich people become beggars, and good speakers turn out to be diabolical. Anyway, human pains exhaust the characters. They are only men. The third theme is tragic irony. This irony affects powerful men who need to reach the bottom before they realise their faults. Gloucester, for example, realises that Edmund has betrayed him, thus he wants to die by jumping off of a cliff when his honest child Edgard saved his life by making him believe that he has died. Gloucester understands to have been blind all his life. In the scene where Lear goes into the storm wearing The Fool's hat is ironically tragic. Although this scene is bizarre we see a keen awareness: Lear perceives his senile dementia in the same way as Hamlet hears of his father's death. 87 Tragic Irony, cruelty and suffering go hand in hand. Actually, cruelty and suffering are other two themes. 3.2. FATHERS AND CHILDREN: the dynamics of their relationship French psychologist and psychoanalyst Alain Bracconier wrote an entire book in order to answer to his own questions: • Which is the best relationship between a father and his child? • Is more dangerous an unreachable and irascible father or a too friendly one? • What are exactly the child expectations? All fathers play a fundamental role in child development; especially female ones, and maybe also King Lear, Regan, Goneril and Cordelia were in the same situation. Doctor Bracconier corrects a wrong vision of the king about paternal love. The expert says that daughters do not need someone to tell them the sentence “I love you”: they simply notice it from their father‘s behaviour, from his attention and from his listening ability he shows them. According to his words, king Lear had better not to measure his daughters’ love towards him on the basis of their speeches but by their actions. King Lear belongs to the category of unreachable fathers, which are those who due to their job have no time for their families. In this case the daughters feel abandoned and lonely.King Lear belongs to the category of the so-called banking fathers, who simply give money to their family without cherishing their life. In this case the daughters perceive lack of paternal love and interest. Daughters on their part can have different reactions. Goneril and Regan are mentioned under the definition of Amazon daughter, who want to prevail over the father. As well as the Amazons they do not trust men at all, in fact they almost hate them. Regan and Goneril do not take their husbands into consideration but they are fascinated by Edmund, who has lust for power and for revenge, which are the same as theirs. On the contrary, Cordelia loves her father and even if she seems fragile, she 88 is indeed the strongest one for having been able to approach her father and then she fortifies herself. It is important even the way in which a father looks at his daughters, psychoanalyst Catherine Mathelin says. In tender age the moment of taking distance from their father allows female children to become aware of their femininity. The lack of father's consideration leads to: • Depression; • Disordered eating: bulimia and anorexia; • Sexuality problems: gay and lesbian issues In conclusion, the villainy of Cordelia's sisters can be explained through modern psychology, since for the experts criminality is due to a lack of love with little empathy. 3.3.ITALIAN CRIME NEWS: Pietro Maso and Ferdinando Carretta Pietro Maso and Ferdinando Carretta share very similar criminal stories. Both of them have killed their parents in order to take their inheritance. Anyway they have two different psychological profiles, experts say. Massimo Picozzi, Italian psychiatrist, criminologist and writer says that there are three kinds of patricide:they can be due to conflicts and abuse, where one kills for revenge or in order to get out of a toxic relationship; for money; killers are mentally ill. Pietro Maso belongs to the second group, unlike Carretta who is in the third one. 89 3.3.1.PIETRO MASO'S CRIMINAL STORY TIME AND PLACE: The day between the 17th and 18th of April 1991 in Montecchia di Crosara (Verona). Antonio Maso (the victim): 56 years old, farmer, and Christian catholic churchgoer. Maria Rosa Tessari (victim): 48 years old, housewife, and Christian catholic churchgoer. Pietro Maso (murderer): He was born on the 17th July 1971 in San Bonifacio, Verona province. At the time of the murder he was nineteen and had two sisters, Nadia and Laura. When he was a child he used to be an altar boy, after the eighth grade he left school because he wanted to earn money but he always quitted. His parents, who used to be lascivious towards their only son, started worrying, since he was spending all his money for living the high life. Giorgio Carbognin (partner in crime): He was born on the 22th of September 1972, once he knew Pietro they became best friends and then partners in crime. Giorgio grew up in Montecchia di Crosara, he is the last of four of a family of farmers. After school, he worked at supermarket. He was an altar boy but loved living the high life. He started having conflicts with his parents when he wanted to buy a car that cost 23 million liras. The bank gave him money but his parents blocked the order. So he spent all the money with Pietro. Paolo Cavazza (partner in crime): Paolo was an altar boy too. He dreamed of the army, but when he left school he worked as salesperson and workman. He was insecure and weak by nature. Damiano Burato (partner in crime): Damiano is the only minor among the four murderers. After school, he attended a professional course for workers. His carport is the place where the gang used to meet. 90 THE FACT Bar "John" was the gathering place for local people in Montecchia di Crosara. There, four friends talk about their dreams and their needs. Pietro is the leader of the gang and finds especially in Giorgio the perfect partner. After the car episode and the money that Giorgio's parents do not want him to have, Pietro thinks of a diabolical project according to which they would kill his own family. Mr and Mrs Maso have eleven fields, savings account at the bank, and the family house, that was a two-floor detached house on San Pietro street. There was more than one homicide attempt: Maso gets two gas cylinders and strobe lights to simulate a casual explosion, sets the alarm clock at 21:30 and closes every air passage, including the chimney. All fails because of his father, who notices the clacking; second attempt involves Giorgio’s complicity. The guys would have taken Pietro’s mother by car and then Giorgio would have hit her with a steak hammer and later the father too, in the garage. Giorgio could not make it; third attempt involves Giorgio too. The garage should have been the crime scene, but Giorgio could not make it this time either. Pietro thinks of recruiting an expert. THE FOURTH ATTEMPT: The murder The day between 17th and 18th April 1991 in Montecchia di Crosara Maso with his three friends Giorgio, Damiano and Paolo they pulled the homicide they had been thinking about for three months. When Mr. and Mrs. Maso came back home, there was no electricity. Pietro, who was lying in wait for the victims, suddenly hit his father with an iron bar, while Damiano was hitting him with a pot. In the mean time, the mother was hitted by Paolo and Giorgio with a steering lock and a pot. Antonio Maso died from foot suffocation, while Pietro filled her mother's mouth with cotton and suffocated her with a bag. Twenty minutes later they both stopped breathing. When the homicide was carried out, the four guys took off their masks and 91 painters' coveralls, that they used in order to protect themselves from blood spots, and after they went to the disco as they had planned before. At two o’clock a.m. Pietro started to put on an act: he was extraneous to the fact. At first investigators suspected it was a robbery but later they changed their mind because of the examination of the crime scene and because Pietro did not show any reaction and was unconvincing. Moreover, his sisters found some clues at home. Two days after the massacre Pietro declared himself guilty. He was accused of aggravated first-degree murder. Pietro's psychiatric evaluation by doctor Vittorino Andreoli confirms the full capacity of discernment and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. On 29th February 1992 the Assize Court in Verona convicted Pietro Maso to thirty years' imprisonment, Carbognin Giorgio and Cavazza Paolo to twenty-six years, and Damiano, who was judged by the Youth court in Verona, to thirteen years' imprisonment. Pietro still wants his inheritance. AFTER THE SENTENCE What is awfully surprising is criminals' cheek. After the sentence according to his Narcissistic disorder Maso wrote a letter to the bishop of Verona, begging him for absolution of sins, he won some permits, had a reduction of his sentence to twentyseven years' imprisonment, was interviewed on the newspaper "La Repubblica", and ironically he played the part of an angel in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar"! Pietro found his faith in prison and he has been living in Cerna since the 15th of May 2013 and working at the broadcast provider of "Telepace" helped by father Guido Todeschini, Telepace Director. Always in 2013 Mondadori edited his autobiographic book "Il male ero io" (I was Evil) by the journalist Raffaella Regoli. 92 In prison, during a previous interview conducted by the writer Cinzia Tani, she swore she saw no sign of remorse in Maso's eyes. In jail he received many letters from his fans, which were teenagers with a crush on him and young people with behavioural problems. The movie "Honor thy mother" in 1992. Maso has been asked to participate as special guest in the Television program conducted by Alfonso Signorini, invitation that the judge has not allowed. He is considered as cruel as Salvatore Riina, Vallanzasca and the Beasts of Satan. Psychiatrist Vittorino Andreoli 36 says: "he did not consider the parental authority of his family, he simply used them as if they were moneyboxes, that he used as much as he could, until he came to the conclusion that those moneyboxes had to be destroyed." 3.3.2.FERDINANDO CARRETTA'S CRIMINAL STORY TIME AND PLACE: The homicide occurs on the 4th of August 1989 in Parma Giuseppe Carretta (victim): Giuseppe is Ferdinando's father, 53, he works as a cashier in a glass factory, and he is a meticulous and scrupulous person. Marta Chezzi (victim): Marta is Ferdinando's mother, 56, housewife. Nicola Carretta (victim): Nicola is Ferdinando's younger brother, 23, drug addict and HIV positive Ferdinando Carretta (murderer): Ferdinando Carretta, 27 at the time of the murder, has a regularly denounced pistol. He lives in Parma with his family. He is discreet by nature and has behavioural problems THE FACT 36 Vittorino Andreoli is an Italian psychiatrist and writer. He is the author of books ranging from medicine to literature to poetry, and collaborates with the Italian magazine “Mente e Cervello” and the Italian newspaper “Avvenire”. He has produced several TV programs for the Broadcaster Sat 2000, which last about 30 minutes, for teenagers (Adolescente TVB), for the elderly (W i nonni) and for families (Una sfida chiamata famiglia). He was in the trial of Pietro Maso, on the 7th of September 1991. 93 It is late August 1989, summer ended and people went back to work. Enterprises opened for business again, including the factory where Giuseppe worked, but he did not show up for work. Few days later, everyone was asking where he was. His colleagues went to his house and found nobody in it. Everything is in order. The family should have left Italy between the 4th or the 5th of August to go on holiday in their camper van to France, Spain and North Africa. Police noticed two cheques cashed at a local bank by Ferdinando dated back on the 8th of August. From that day on nobody saw him anymore. On the 19th of November in San Vittore someone told that a camper van had been staying in a carparking for months. Warnings were given by a viewer of the Italian TV show "Chi l'ha visto?", which was taking up the case. THE ADMISSION On the 20th of November 1998, nine years later, Mr. Carretta was discovered during a chance stop and search in London. The magistrate responsible for the case wanted to interrogate him, but Carretta said to be totally innocent. The journalists of "Chi l'ha visto?" went to London and visited him. On the 30th of November 1998 Ferdinando admits to be guilty. He stated that he had killed his family and parked the camper van far from his house to sidetrack investigations. Then, he had put his parents and brother into the water in order to preserve corpses from heat. Few days later he had throw them down into a dump in Viarolo. The RIS forensics in Parma proved his admission and found out that he had told the truth. On the cord of shower they noticed blood spots, moreover in the wooden support under the china soap holder, away from water, there was a long brown moustache with some blood over. The blood belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Maso. 94 THE PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION Carretta's psychiatric evaluation spoke of blunted affect. The individual fails in expressing feelings especially when things are expected to engage the emotions. Moreover, they show manias, phobias and obsessions. At the time of the murder Maso is supposed to suffer from Schizophrenia and Acute Psychosis that leads to disturbed visions of reality as a result of a bad relationship with his parents. On 11th April 1999 Court of Assize accused Carretta of his family murder but he was absolved from guilt because he was mentally disturbed. He was interned in the mental hospital in Castiglione delle Stiviere for five years. On 22 nd February 2004 the Surveillance Court granted probation and in 2006 he was interned. He has inherited the family house, but he has refused it. Although he has a job and has partially resolved his personal drama today, he said that he died when he killed his family and that he is a danger to society. The authors of the most famous pitiful family murders are now released. Even Doretta Graneris, the so-called "belva di Vercelli", Erika and Omar, Ferdinando Carretta and Pietro Maso. Doretta killed at the age of eighteen in 1975 together with her future husband her entire family: mother, father, maternal grandparents and thirteen-year old brother, and the dog. Erika and Omar are the protagonists of the Novi Ligure murder in 2001, where they stabbed to death Erika's mother, Susanna Cassini, a 42-year-old accountant, and her 11-year-old son Gianluca. All of them are free by law. 95 CONCLUSION „All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.“ (W.Shakespeare, „As You Like It“, Jaques, act II, scene VII, vv-139-140). Conclusion brings the curtain down on this dissertation. Two are the Shakespearian tragedies that I chose in order to prove the interconnection between current events and Shakespeare drama, and partly "The tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" too. For this, I apologise with the other protagonists such as Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth and Julius Caesar, I hope they will forgive me. The Shakespearian quote I put at the beginning of the concluding paragraph reaffirms the concept explained by Merchant in her song "Carnival": the world is a stage, it is a carnival of personalities, therefore it is beautiful and cruel at the same time. Modern Othello, such as Salvatore Parolisi and Michele Buoninconti, modern Desdemona, as Melania Rea and Elena Ceste, modern Edmund, Regan and Goneril, as Pietro Maso and Ferdinando Carretta are only a few examples of those who played the same role in different ages. Femicides and violence perpetrated by children against their parents are linked to many real-life stories. The enactment of the law against femicide was declared in Italy in October 2013, whereas a man in the US, who was the Mayor of New York City between 1994 and 2001, had already taken measures against this crime; his name is Rudy Giuliani. The term "femicide" was coined by American criminologist Diane E.H.Russell and it means a killing of a female individual by a male individual. Mr. Giuliani's initiative included: the assignment of a policeman and a detective in each district of the city, so that they would report sexual abuses; the training of police patrols to make them act peremptorily against sexual offenders; and the creation of a computer-based crime measurement system directly connected to the 96 judicial system. Lastly, he hired counsellors in hospitals, so that they would support the victims of domestic violence. In 2001 Rudy Giuliani was named Time magazine's Person of the year. On the contrary, in Italy according to the last figures of the Ministry of Interior the situation is checkered: on one hand the law against femicide has borne fruits, both admonitions and arrests in flagrante delicto have increased, but on the other hand legal procedures seem not enough. In order to fix the problem the concept of "emotional Education" has to be introduced, Isabella Rauti, President of the International non-profit Organization "Hands off Women", says. However, talking about the successes of the law against femicide we must remember: the significant increase in measures against violent men; the fact that both admonitions and estrangements have quadrupled (from 111 in 2013 to 408 in 2014; from 73 to 275). In view of this "repressive" activity a consequent reductions of threats to women (from 38832 to 35346), blows (from 9688 to 8547), sexual abuses (from 4084 to 3753), and of personal injuries (from 26526 to 25033) have been recorded. For what concerns another side of domestic violence, another term has been coined: familicide. The term has not a big use and it is different from matricide and parricide, since it involves the killing of both parents. Parricide and matricide episodes have been recorded in History books because of their brutality. Experts suggest that parricides are due to the moral degradation of family. For philosopher and University professor Umberto Galimberti the family and household are undoubtedly the most obvious dens for crime. That's why: our society imposes a severe emotional standard on us so that the family becomes the counterpart of the excessive formality and commonsense. As well as the actor takes off his or her mask after the show, we also take off ours when we come back home. The deeper is the scar of family relationships, the bigger is the violence. Psychologist and criminolgist 97 Enrico Magni defines the modern-day family by using the word "patchwork", which means a group of persons from different backgrounds and with different needs. Nowadays, family has no roots. It changes when our emotional needs do. Over the last few years familicides including parricide, matricide, filicide, fratricide and femicide have increased a lot, even in Italy. It ranks first in Northern Italy and second only to organized crime in Southern Italy. The most famous Italian crime news, not to mention the ones in the dissertation, are: Novi Ligure murder (2001), Cogne homicide (2002), Avetrana murder (2010), the homicide of little Loris Stival (2014) and the murders of Gilberta Palleschi and Veronica Valenti (2014). Family and marital relationships are the places where people feel emotions of hatred and love. The consequences of these feelings are sublime and dangerous at times. Homicides create more than one victim: the murder victim, the killer and the spectators, who are mesmerized and hypnotized by what their eyes have seen and what their ears have heard. I conclude once again with a quote by the Bard: “To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” (“Macbeth”, Atto V, scena V, vv.15-24).37 37 Macbeth pronounced these words when he had nothing to loose anymore: his enemies were going to catch him, while his spouse, Lady Macbeth, had already died. I chose this passage, since it restates the same concept as Jaques in „As You Like It“, as Hamlet in „Hamlet“, as Natalie Merchant in her song „Carnival“ and as William Shakespeare during all his career. Famous American serial killer Aileen Wuornos wanted this song tob e played during her funeral. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE “Was beinhaltet ein Name? Historiker, Philosophen sowie Dramatiker 45 Stephen Greenblatt, „Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare”, 2005, pag. 1.4. 1.4.1. 2.3. Ursprünglich heißt sie „Most Evil“, hierzulande „Anatomia di una mente criminale“. 3. August 1989 in Parma. DER DREIFACHE MORD Die Familie Carretta soll angeblich Italien am 4. oder 5. August verlassen Christ Superstar". 128 BIBLIOGRAFIA Ronald Berman, A Reader's Guide to Shakespeare's Plays: A Discursive Bibliography, Scott, Foresman, 1973. K.J.
