NOT COMMON THINGS 2014 www.covo.com COVO COMPANY With the strength of aesthetic tradition which combines the concept of elegance with that of simplicity, COVO, italian DNA and international roots, has made itself the perfect interpreter of these two terms developing an autonomus and distinctive language, capable of marrying tradition and contemporaneity classicism and avantgarde design. With its first steps through the severity of form and signs exported from Orient, it gives character to its products while at the same time remaining faithful to its origins, enriching them progressively with new and costant stimulation from the world of design. With and sensitive eye, it directs and manages research that ranges from the skilful uses of materials to the giving body to the voices of designers, permitting itself an occasion to go with an ironic spirit into the field of experimentation, without overstepping the limit into useless showmanship. The fantasy of form and attention to materials become the protagonists and the final product shines with a fresh and extremely personal aesthetic without sacrificing functionally. A strong identity founded on a primary need of feasibilty, a harmonius marriage of form and content, a brand capable of seducing and conquering the attention of an ever more vast public thanks to the unceasing serch for a point of balance, in real and not apparent terms. The “not common things” by COVO return to enrich the design “dictionary”. Simple and wise objects made of few signs, but capable of being remembered. In the contemporary saturated condition, we find ourselves surrounded more and more by a world of “things”. Material and immaterial things, real and imaginary things, sacred and unholy things, things which are useful and things which are not, good and bad things. The Design takes care of these things and can do it in many ways: rethinking, reinventing, copying, covering, playing aroundor being serious. Otherwise, like COVO tries to do: by observing. Observing the world of “things” which surrounds us and trying to imagine new objectswhich will take their places in the empty spots of our imagination. Objects born therefore, from the careful exploration of the material landscape, thinking of our world as a sheet full of signs which too often are confused, and loose their meaning…. As it happens in children’s drawings, or in prehistoric graffiti (humankind’s own infancy), where few lines describe worlds and stories; the “not common things” by COVO try to offer simplicity, erasing confusion and focusing on emotion rather than reason. Therefore, between clothes hangers resembling tree branches, tables like hedges, chairs like flowering fields, seats that embrace, “magic” lamps that raise, photo frames like strings stretched on the wind and soft crystals, our world of “things” becomes a world of “signs”. Simple “signs”, in black and white or in colours, which like emotional codes fill the blank sheet of our gaps. The “not common things” by COVO are autonomous objects, capable of relating with all our landscapes, but are also phrasesof a story, the story of COVO. In addition, on a more emotional level, the vase shape makes sense as a shape on a shelf, because we are used to seeing vases on shelves in homes all over the world. The project drifts between the worlds of function and non function, engineering and decoration, art and design. From the one hand the shelves are seemingly performing their function even when no objects are placed on them, because the vase shapes create the illusion of objects that are already placed on the shelves, and so it is a shelf-sculpture that is beautiful by its own being. But on the other hand the shelves remains a practical shelving unit ready for use.The user can play and determine the amount of shelve/sculpture he would like the object to have by adding or removing vases (each shelf can have as little as 4 vases and as many as fit in the shelf) and so customize and determine the objects functional level. Something was beginning to change. The old furniture had always had a smell, a colour, a sometimes excessive bulk of its own, a rather pretentious style which brought back memories of vanishing rituals and habits, of dark rooms kept closed for too much of the time, of long lunches and unavoidable family gatherings. In its place came “Swedish furniture” . From the North. From another way of living and being together.Unpolished natural wood, Formica table tops, colours, metal and glass took pride of place in our lounges and dining rooms. The invasion may have been a cautious one at first: the coffee table, the TV stand, the new fake leather kitchen chairs, but the new furniture was as popular for its simple cheerful style as for its obvious comfort and convenience, and harmonized with the new music that was invading Italian homes on 45 r.p.m. records. The surface decoration can then reach the level of the naive popular imagery which, in the ancient South, has always adorned the dark corners of old crowded alleys , or the forgotten hidden recesses of immense labyrinthine dwellings. These decorative details are now out there in the foreground with all the memories they evoke, but also have much to suggest that is new, in this unusual and unexpected game of marrying their playfully retrieved style to the basic functionality of the object. Both style and function are discovered in an intelligent and articulate retrieval of memory, in which the hidden colour lightly inlaid on the inside of the stool lends a discreet radiance to the richly designed new surface which eleg antly inks in the simple outline of the plain wood. Qualcosa iniziava a cambiare. Nelle nostre case arrivarono i “ mobili svedesi “.
