The inaugural concert of Daniele Gatti as the new music director
of Amsterdam’s fabled Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra –
only the seventh in its 128-year history. Together with German
baritone Christian Gerhaher, Gatti presented a bouquet of
works including Mozart arias and the Wayfarer Songs by Gustav
Mahler, with whom the “world’s best orchestra” (Gramophone
international music critics’ poll) has a unique tradition going
back to the composer himself – who called Amsterdam his
“second musical home”. The programme also includes Respighi’s
Fountains of Rome as well as overtures by Verdi and Beethoven
– with some 30 members of the Netherlands Youth Orchestra
joining the RCO musicians for the Overture to Egmont.
“The RCO confirmed that their Mahler can be equalled but not
bettered,” declared Bachtrack’s reviewer. “Christian Gerhaher’s
portrayal of disappointed love was faultlessly executed and
expressively complex.” There was “fabulous ease” in his
performance of Figaro’s aria “Non più andrai”, special praise
for the concluding Sicilian Vespers Overture (“rarely played so
tautly and heroically”) and, above all, for Respighi’s kaleidoscopic
showpiece: “Gatti’s colouring, dynamic and phrasing details
all clicked into place during this glittering, horizon-wide
performance.”
