If some of our works are symphonies, then wrapped walkways was chamber music”. 7 Lucia Pescador. Interiors for the left hand. by Alberto Crespi Incipit The use of the left hand is what impresses most of Lucia Pescador’s graphical and pictorial work. And this is not a mere trifle for a right-hand artist. Blaise Cendrars’ post-war writing is well-known. I would rather review the music history where this fact is not uncommon. I will restrict myself to the best known names and will leave out the didactics aiming at strengthening the left hand. We have, in chronological order, several significant examples: Bach, with his Gavotte from Partita No. 3, Chopin with his two Polonaises Op. 40, Liszt with his ‘Ungarns Gott’ S. 543 and Scriabin with his Prelude and Nocturne Op. 9. We also know that Brahms composed ‘für die linke Hand’, basing on transcriptions and revisions from Bach’s e Schubert’s compositions. Then there are Alkan’s three ‘Grandes Etudes’ (Op. 76 , Béla Bartòk’s compositions for piano ( DD71) and Dinu Lipatti’s delightful Sonatina. Furthermore there are compositions for orchestra such as the well known Ravel’s concert for piano, not to forget Korngold and Richard Strauss’ piano compositions (op. 17 and Op. 73 respectively) and, finally, Korngold’s lovely Suite for two violins, cello and piano for the left hand (Op. 23). The strict relationship between music and painting is something well-known, especially all along the 20th century. Italian Futurism, Duchamp and the Suprematism bear witness. To come back to our age, just remember the graphical experiments with different matters or the scores drawn by John Cage and also Cage’s relations with Jasper Johns e Robert Rauschenberg. It is worth mentioning Christo Javacheff’s quotation regarding The Gates’, a project carried out with Jeanne Claude in Central Park : “If some of our works are symphonies, then wrapped walkways was chamber music”. Lucia Pescador has been building his Archive of the 20th century with her left hand for many years now. It has become a sort of official institution. With patience, a deep knowledge of history and art, and inexhaustible inventiveness, the painter works day by day trying to rescue an entire age. An age I repeat, not merely a culture; as a matter of fact the artist can walk through different cultures reaching the deepest areas. Quotations from African and Far East cultures converge in her works, as well as cartoons signs. Lucia Pescador builds a transversal language which takes into account different languages and objects. Her painting becomes hypertext. “I work with my left hand because this forces me to write more slowly and attentively – the artist explains”. “Then I allow my right hand a few corrections, just to align a bit, but not so much”. This method is perfectly visible in all her works, from the smallest upto the largest ones. As a matter of fact, working with the left hand allow the artist to transcript the image present in her mind directly to the paper, leaving out all the adjustments that the right hand would automatically make with the risk to deviate from the original icon. With this method the qualities of the image remain unaltered in terms of fidelity to one’s thought and freshness of the emotion. 8 Lucia Pescador’s iconology Lucia Pescador’s collection of images is virtually infinite but the artist knows well how to select and match only those that are suitable to be studied to depth. The artist extracts the essential aspects of every icon and then uses them to build her own interpretation. Each of the large size works reflects traces of the analysis carried out on the object; and yet it is in the small size works that the artist’s process is best expressed, with sudden gestures. Lucia Pescador’s accomplishments that I most admire are the following: her fidelity to the objects, the rapidity of the mental transcription and her great skill with the art of drawing and her sense of colour. For me, that can sense colour only after getting to know the composition and the structure of a work of art, the use of primary colours in her paintings and of the elegant grey scale in her films, are clear demonstrations of intellectual lucidity. Every work appears to be conceived on a large scale, as only great artists can do. Hence the greatness of the colors of her works, their purity and uncontaminated brightness. The composition of this ‘Kammermusik’ is sober and compact; her use of “variation” is structural, without any drop in tension as sometimes occurs with a long-meditated work. The pictorial space, as well as the sound space, are characterized by a formal impressiveness. Lucia Pescador’s knowledge and culture bring about an incisiveness well above the average of the artists of her own generation. Her great expertise with composition and colors can turn a perfectly balanced work into something flighty, bringing in continuous changes in the rhythm of strokes and colors, turning the process of creating into a game. The artist doesn’t restrict herself to a mere revisiting of historical works, but re-interprets them with deep critical insight. Quotations from De Stijl and the Suprematism are endowed with a formal purity. Lucia Pescador has been working at her ‘Interiors’ as though they are scores ever since 1992-1993. The works she then dedicated to Kazimir Malevic were as large as an entire wall. Then and today her works are drawn and painted on very large sheets, positioned one next to the other. For some works she uses small blackboards. For others she uses films. All of them result to be unmistakably hers, because of the signs she makes use of: structural signs, superimpositions, interpolations, contaminations. But understanding the whole assembly is not complicated. Nowadays too many different languages may cause aphasia. The width of the communication network doesn’t allow you to identify a precise direction. Lucia Pescador’s works stand out because they represents a cultural path. Interiors – Again, Finally Lucia Pescador’s exhibition in New York reminds me of something that occurred in the Great Apple between the Thirties and Fourties, last century. I’m talking about Costantino Nivola’s story. Nivola was born in Orani, Sardinia, in 1911; he studied at the Istituto Superiore di Industrie Artistiche 9 at Monza “Villa reale”. The architects of the Rationalism school were among his teachers. After graduating, Adriano Olivetti engaged him to work in his advertising office as a graphic designer. Married to Ruth Guggenheim, owing to the racial laws, he was forced to emigrate and reached New York in 1939. There he met the emerging American artists and, a short time after, all the artists, architects, musicians, intellectuals and scientists who were leaving Europe to seek safety from the racial persecutions carried out by the Nazis. The sympathy and the solidarity shown by the population with the refugees were of critical importance for the American culture. American and European artists together were seeking new ways to build a better world. Art and town planning were strictly connected. Even though European artists might have been more inclined to spatiality, artistic contaminations were of great importance. Nivola studied with the architects Pagano and Persico in Monza and was in familiar terms with the editorial staff of Casabella, a magazine involved in disclosing Bauhaus dictates in Italy (In New York this movement was then represented by Schawinsky, Gropius and their colleagues). From 1941 to 1947 Nivola worked as Art Director for ‘Interiors and Industrial Design’, an interior decoration magazine. Thanks to his acquaintance with the graphic designer Schawinsky, Nivola succeeded in involving his friends Sert and Gropius in the project. Nivola found a way to make the magazine deal with their ideas and their work. With his help, the contents were renewed, and the graphic layout was updated. Also Le Corbusiers was a friend of his. Nivola’s study was on the 8th Street while Le Curbusier stayed in a hotel on the 5th Avenue, close to Washington Square. Therefore they lived quite close to each other. During his staying in New York, Le Corbusier used to work at Nivola’s place. A mural painting bears witness. Later on, with the help of Peressutti and Rogers, both architects, Nivola decorated an entire wall of the Olivetti Show Room on the 5th Avenue using his own “sand casting” technique, but this is another story… As for Lucia Pescador today, those interiors were, above all, a project of poetics (transated by Sylvie Crespi) 10 OPERE 11 Stanza di Kazimir Malevič 1913 1992 - 2007 immagini su pellicola di acetato cm 27x40 12 A. Inizia ad esporre nel 1965 presso la galleria Arte Centro di Milano, oggi Lattuada Studio. LUCIA PESCADOR Biography Born in Voghera on February 9, 1943, graduated at Art Accademy of Brera in Milan, she also taught in an Art School, Lucia Pescador has always preferred drawing, working on issues related to nature, culture and art . She began to exhibit in 1965 at Arte Centro Gallery in Milan, now Lattuada Studio.
