Her book solds over 280.000 copies Oscar is almost ten. His mind rushes at full speed, but his lungs are weak. For this reason he spends his summer holidays by the sea together with his parents, in an isolated house clinging to the cliffs overlooking the tiny beach of Portopidocchio. By the light of the moon, one night Oscar furtively descends on the beach. Mia, a young mermaid, is waiting for him on a rock. She convinces him to go to the Island of Lost Time, far away from his strict and authoritarian father. However, not everything goes as planned: a group of Cannibals have left the Island for the Earth, where they are plotting a coup d’état. Mia has a plan: she wants to gather a small army of imaginary friends to fight the Cannibals who, in the meantime, have already conquered the Palace of Power. «The thing that shocked me the most about the true story is the broken childhood of the protagonists and this is why I have tried to give a voice to those who have never had one». Silvana Gandolfi «Gandolfi is an inimitable master of engrossing surreal stories where the fantastic unexpectedly enters the everyday with sensational and exhilarating effects». FICTION Salani Editore VITA DI BERNIE The renowned historian Massimo Salvadori tells us a dog’s life, narrated from the animal’s point of view With a preface by Claudio Magris on the amazing relationship that can sparkle between a dog and its master March 2012 Pages: 128 Face to face with some animal, and especially dogs, we often think: «If only it could speak...» In this book the reader hears Bernie’s voice loud and clear. And that’s clearly a lucky exception, given that when his masters are around Bernie generally refuses to bark. Abandoned at a very young age, the puppy is adopted by a young couple living in town: Matteo and Dorina. At the beginning, living with humans is not that easy for Bernie... Life, from the point of view of four legs instead of two, is very different: vets and dog-washers torturing you, human nieces teasing you, and then there are the leash, the muzzle, the outings with the grandparents and the flights. Now that he is older and wiser, Bernie shares with the reader, in a proud and self-conscious tone, what the special life of an ordinary dog is like. «Thanks to this novel, we get to know the real essence of the relationship between a man and his dog». Claudio Magris MASSIMO SALVADORI MASSIMO L. SALVADORI, an Italian historian and politician, was born in Ivrea on 23 September 1936. He studied under W. Maturi in Turin and under F. FICTION Salani Editore SCHELETRINA CICCIABOMBA Simona Vinci internationally acclaimed author, did a terrific job creating a great story for children. Two stories in one. Just keep on turning the book again and again. March 2012 Pages: 96 Illustrated by Raffaella Ligi SIMONA VINCI SIMONA VINCI was born in Milan and currently lives outside Bologna. Her books are published in Italy and abroad. Salani FICTION From the book Scheletrina Cicciabomba «The story of a girl who is too fat and another that is too thin, who in the end discover they are one and the same girl: Olivia, who is neither too fat nor too thin, does not bear the weight of unfriendly or cruel nicknames, and learns, together with those close to her, to love what she eats (and therefore her body and herself) without being devoured. It is both wonderful and exhausting being a child. Bodies that are simultaneously fragile and very strong, that lengthen, grow and change in just a few short months. A constant transformation that soaks up so much energy not just from the body, but also from that thing that inhabits it and each one of us calls as best he or she thinks: soul, spirit, character... But most of all it is difficult being a child among other children, as happens at school, when this body we inhabit and reveals us to others can become a source of insecurity, unease and suffering. For children, kitchens have become a mysterious and forbidden place to which they have free access only to consume a meal decided, thought up, bought and prepared by adults, never a place of fun and experimentation. Thus, food becomes lots of different things all rolled into one, but rarely something that passed through their hands and their intelligence. It would often take so little to try to harmonize body and food, as well as that other thing that each one of us calls as best he or she thinks. A little fantasy would be enough, some attention paid to that food that should nourish us and help us grow up happy, without becoming an obsession either because it is too much or too little. One approach could be to use stories that make things real and, in this case, edible. It is up to the parents to find the creativity, the attention and the time. And Olivia is a good place to start!» Simona Vinci Editore FICTION Salani Editore ALFABETO EBRAICO Matteo Corradini is an eclectic intellectual with the gift of writing. A masterpiece of imagination and beauty. A great classic of Italian illustration. May 2012 Pages: 32 CHIARA RAPACCINI Imagine a funny wardrobe with a set of colourful and unique clothes. The wardrobe is full of «impossible clothes» to do «impossible things»: there is a pot-hat to play in the kitchen, and a cake-hat to wear at birthday parties, a soft, bubbly dress of foam, an iron skirt, an invisible dress, some tree-shoes, talking socks, warming knickers and an umbrella full of holes. Everyday clothes can be, in fact, rather boring and anonymous. Free your imagination with this book and create your own style. GIANNI RODARI «I wish Rodari were still with us. He stressed the importance of understanding the difference between children and adults, and helped children to get together to face the many social problems they encountered: we can build a better society if we respect children’s autonomy and their way of thinking... Reading is a fundamental ingredient of growing up: we can think because we have words, and if you know how to use them, you can give them different meanings. How do you learn? There is no such topic at school: reading is the only way. Rodari created a pedagogical approach despite his narrative is far from pedagogic: here lies his greatness». Roberto Denti
