Italian Verb Glossary Agreement: When we change the spelling of a past participle to show that it is describing feminine or plural. Essere verbs ONLY. Paolo è arrivato. Paola è arrivata. Paolo e Antonio sono arrivati. Paola e Antonia sono arrivate. Conditional Tense: A tense used to say what you would do or what would happen in the future. Conjugate: To break a verb into 6 parts to say who is doing the action. 1=I 2 = you (singular) Future Tense: you 3 = he/she 4 = we 5 = you (plural) A tense to talk about what things 6 = they will be like in the future or what will do in the future. Help Verb: The verb used to help form the past tense and the pluperfect tense. It is either avere or essere. Ho mangiato. I have eaten / I ate. Sono andato. I have gone / I went. Avevo mangiato. I had eaten. Ero andato. I had gone. Imperfect Tense: past, A tense used to talk about what you used to do in the were doing in the past and to describe things in the past. Infinitive: The starting point of the verb (parlare to speak, vendere to sell, finire to finish etc). This is the part of the verb a dictionary gives you. You will usually have to conjugate it. Past Infinitive: A structure with dopo + avere or essere + the past participle which translates as After having done something….. Past participle: The last bit of the past tense or pluperfect tense. Ho mangiato.I have eaten. Abbiamo preso. We have taken. Avevo visto il film. I had seen the film. Past Tense: A tense used for a completed, single action which has happened or happened in the past. Also known as the Perfect Tense. Reflexive Verbs: These verbs have an extra little bit called a reflexive pronoun added to them (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si) Remote Past: A tense used for completed actions in the past which is used in literature. You are not expected to produce it for GCSE Italian. Pluperfect Tense: A tense used where there are two past actions and you want to show that one had happened before the other. Present Continuous Tense: A tense used when the action is happening at the time of speaking. Present Tense: now or A tense used to talk about what you usually do, are doing are going to do soon. Stem:The part of the verb that the ending is added to. Subject pronoun: The word which tells us who is doing the verb. io (I) noi (we) tu (you singular) voi (you plural) lui (he) loro (they) lei (she) Loro (you plural, polite form) They are often omitted as the verb ending ALSO tells us who is doing the verb. Lei (you singular, polite form) Subjunctive: A verb form which is used after specific expressions expressing doubt, hope, fear, emotion etc. Higher candidates may use a limited range of subjunctives. Tense:Tells us what time frame an action is happening in (present, past, future). Verb ending: The letter or letters at the end of a verb which help us to recognise who is doing the verb. Uses: 1.To talk about things which you usually do. 2. To talk about what you are doing now. 3. To talk about what you are going to do soon. 4. To talk about something you started in the past and still do. How do I form the Present Tense for regular verbs? 1. START WITH THE INFINITIVE. 3. ADD THE CORRECT ENDING. 2. So, I listen = ascolto AND I am listening = ascolto. I am listening is NEVER, EVER sono ascolto. 1. Mangio una mela durante la pausa. I eat an apple at break. 2. Mangio una mela perchè ho fame. I’m eating an apple because I’m hungry. 3. Mangio una mela fra poco. I’m going to eat an apple in a little while. 4. Mangio questa mela da dieci minuti. I’ve been eating this apple for ten minutes. Watch out for –care and –gare infinitives. They do not follow the pattern of regular verbs. They are IRREGULAR. Many of these IRREGULAR VERBS are key GCSE verbs so you need to know them. How do I form the Present Continuous? Part 1 The verb stare in the present tense. I’m finishing my homework so I can’t go out. bere bevendo dire dicendo fare facendo produrre producendo Reflexive verbs have an extra bit attached to them. It’s called a reflexive pronoun. The ending remains the same, you just need to add the pronoun. alzarsi to get up mi alzo Mi alzo alle otto. I get up at 8. ti alzi A che ora ti alzi? What time do you get up? si alza ci alziamo vi alzate si alzano Making a present tense verb negative (don’t/doesn’t) is easy. Simply put NON in front of the verb. Canto bene. Non canto bene. I sing well. I don’t sing well. Abitano in centro. Non abitano in centro. They live in the town centre. They don’t live in the town centre. Mi alzo alle nove. Non mi alzo alle nove. I get up at 9 o’clock. I don’t get up at 9 o’clock. Stiamo mangiando. Non stiamo mangiando. We are eating. We’re not eating. Lui ascolta musica. Lui non ascolta musica. He listens to music. He doesn’t listen to music. If there is a subject pronoun (I, you, he etc ) or a person’s name, it goes in front of the non. Use:To talk about actions which will happen in the future. How do I form the future tense? 1. START WITH THE INFINITIVE. 3. ADD THE CORRECT ENDING. 2. REMOVE THE LETTER E FROM THE END. The endings are not irregular. How do I form the conditional tense? It has exactly the same stem as the future tense but the endings are different. 1. START WITH THE INFINITIVE. 2. REMOVE THE 3. ADD THE CORRECT ENDING. Mi piacerebbe lavorare all’estero. I would like to work abroad. When we use the verb dovere (to have to) in the conditional, it is translated as should or ought to. Dovresti andare in Italia per studiare. You should go to Italy to study. Lui dovrebbe smettere di fumare visto che fa male. He ought to stop smoking as it’s harmful. Making a future or a conditional verb negative (won’t/wouldn’t) is easy. Simply put NON in front of the verb. Andrò a scuola domani ma non andrò a scuola sabato. I’ll go to school tomorrow but I won’t go to school on Saturday. Non fumerei perchè è pericoloso. I wouldn’t smoke because it’s dangerous. Remember that whether the verb is regular or irregular, the stem ends in the letter R. Use: To talk about completed actions in the past. How do I form the Past Tense? I ate a delicious pizza. Lui ha mangiato una pizza ai funghi. He ate a mushroom pizza. Hanno mangiato una pizza insieme. They ate a pizza together. REFLEXIVE VERBS: All reflexive verbs also use essere to help form the past tense. divertirsi to enjoy oneself Mi sono divertito. OR Mi sono divertita. (if it’s a girl) I enjoyed myself. Paolo si è divertito. Paul enjoyed himself. Note that the Paola si è divertita. Paula enjoyed herself. reflexive pronoun Paolo e Antonio si sono divertiti. Paul and Anthony enjoyed themselves. goes BEFORE the help verb. Paola e Antonia si sono divertite. Paula and Antonia enjoyed themselves. Making a past tense verb negative (didn’t) is easy. Simply put NON in front of the verb. Non ho mangiato. I didn’t eat. Non è andato al cinema. He didn’t go to the cinema. Non mi sono divertita. I didn’t enjoy myself. Uses: 1.To talk about what used to happen. 2. To describe things in the past. 3. To say what was happening. How do I form the Imperfect Tense? 1. START WITH THE INFINITIVE. 2. REMOVE THE FINAL RE. 3. Andavo spesso al cinema. I used to go to the cinema often. 1. Non arrivava in orario. He didn’t arrive on time. (on a regular basis as opposed to on one particular occasion.) 2. L’esame era facile. The exam was easy. 2. Le ragazze non erano felici. The girls were not happy. 3.Giocavano al calcio quando sono arrivato. They were playing football when I arrived. 3. Non pioveva quando sono uscito. It wasn’t raining when I went out. A good way to spot the Imperfect, is the letter V. they bevevano dicevano erano facevano Use: When you have two actions in the past and you want to show that one was completed before the other. How do I form the Pluperfect Tense? The formation of the Pluperfect Tense is very similar to that of the Past Tense so: Part 1 = The help verb Part 2 = The past participle (PP) The difference is that the help verb avere or essere is in the IMPERFECT TENSE here. Sono arrivato alle nove ma il treno era già partito. I arrived at 9 o’clock but the train had already left. L’esame era difficle perchè non avevo studiato molto. The exam was difficult because I had not studied much. Laura non aveva fame perchè aveva già mangiato. Laura wasn’t hungry as she had already eaten. Essere ero eri era eravamo eravate erano Uses: To translate ‘after doing something…. / once I’d done something…..’ How do I form the Past Infinitive? 1. START WITH THE WORD DOPO (AFTER). INFINITIVE. 2. ADD AVERE 3.FINISH WITH (AVER) OR THE PP . ESSERE. THE WORD DOPO (AFTER). Dopo aver mangiato, sono andata INFINITIVE. al cinema. After eating, I went to the cinema. Dopo aver fatto la doccia, mi sono vestito. After having a shower, I got dressed. Dopo essere arrivata a casa, Maria ha cenato. After arriving home, Maria had dinner. Dopo essere tornati, i ragazzi hanno guardato la televisione. After getting back home, the boys watched television. Dopo essermi alzato, ho fatto la doccia. Once I’d got up, I had a shower. (boy speaking) Dopo essermi alzata, ho fatto la doccia. Once I’d got up, I had a shower. (girl speaking) All the rules for the past tense about how to form past participles, which verbs use avere and essere, agreement etc. apply here as well. You can only use this structure when the person doing both bits of the sentence is the same.
