Health Service
The minute you require medical treatment, you must exchange your international health insurance
certificate, obtained in your home country from you health insurance company, at the USL.
The USL is an Italian health insurance institute, with offices in nearly every major town.
Should you not have any health insurance certificate, you will settle the payment directly at the doctor’s – please
do not forget to ask for the receipt.
Emergency treatment is available to everyone (Italians and internationals) at the hospital (Pronto Soccorso)
free of charge.
There is also a European insurance card – please ask your insurer for more information.
Pharmacies don‘t only offer their usual services but also give useful advice concerning first aid treatment and
even pass on addresses of reputable doctors. When the pharmacy is closed, you should always find a note with
the details of an alternative (Farmacia di turno).
There is only one number for all Emergency Medical Services (Emergency doctor: Guardia medica.
