La Gardesana
The "Gardesana" building has more than 500 years of history (Founded in
1452).
It has been built by the Venetian Republic for the meetings of the Council of the
ten communes of this side of the lake.
After Napoleon, during the Austrian domination, until 1866, it had a dark
period of decadence.
At the end of the last century, it was transformed into a hotel and, in a few
decades, it became the centre of culture, arts and good cuisine.
In the last fifty years, it has been preferred by famous personages like:
Beniamino Gigli, Toti Dal Monte, Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca, André Gide, Stephen
Spender, Vivien Leigh, Lawrence Olivier, Maria Callas, Luis Trenker, Dino Risi,
Ugo Tognazzi and Vittorio Gassman.
The cordial and distinguished management of Mr. and Mrs. Tomei was very well
known everywhere.
In 1980 the building was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzini.
They continued, with enthusiasm, the improvement of the hotel and restaurant
in order to satisfy their distinguished guests.
The list of the famous personages increased quickly: Jacques Piccard, Shirley
Verrett, Fabio Testi, Horst Tappert, Kim Novak, Guy Tosi, Victor del Litto,
Horst Rudiger, Fiorenza Cossotto, Ivo Vinco, Lydia Alfonsi, Osvaldo Bevilacqua,
until the unforgettable evening in honour of the King of Spain Juan Carlos I.
And, from now, if you allow us, we could say that we have had the honour of
your visit.

Since 2013 the restaurant Gardesana belongs to the venerable
“Confraternita del bacalà alla vicentina”
Messer Piero Querini, a venetian merchant, in 1431 was looking for fortune beyond the
Mediterranean. He left for Candia (isle of Crete) with a ship full of Malvasia wine,
aromatic woods, spices and cotton. The destination was the Flanders. But the misfortune
reached him and the trip turned into a shipwreck
Most of the crew died while one of the two rescue boats, at the mercy of winds and
streams, reached a desert isle covered with snow. The survivors were welcome by the local
people who looked after them and gave them food . Mr Querini discovered here the
special way they used to preserve their main food: the stockfish.
Once cleaned and washed the stockfish used to be salted and left outside at the fresh air
for months. The fish became hard as a stick.
The merchant decided to return home and brought the “new food” with him. During
his journey used to swap it with other food, accommodation and transport. Once he
arrived in northern Italy the fish was highly appreciated because tasty and chip.
