How to use this resource
The exhibition Marine life: Exploring our seas investigates the different and unique aspects of
Victorian Marine Life. The exhibition explores the diverse habitats that make up the Victorian
waters and the similarity and diversity of the living things within these habitats, their
relationships with each other and their environment.
The LOTE Italian education package La vita nel mare incorporates language activities for
school and for the visit to the exhibition. An additional program, Esplora in italiano: la vita nel
mare has been developed by the Co.As.It Education Officer to introduce students to the
exhibition and support understanding and exploration of the various Science themes in
Italian. This staff led program is offered on Mondays at 10 am and 12 noon, during Terms 2,
3 and 4 in 2006. Booking essential: Telephone 1300 130 152
Additional information for school groups visiting Melbourne Museum is available at
http://museumvictoria.com.au/MelbourneMuseum/Education/
Teachers should consider pre-visit activities as essential to provide students with background
knowledge for the themes in La vita nel mare. The exhibition will provide students with
context, stimulus and an overall experience that will be explored during the visit and later
back at school in post-visit activities. Students are encouraged to take note of particular parts
of the exhibition that they find interesting. Some featured animals can be researched via the
Museum Victoria website: http://museumvictoria.com.au/marine/
Some of the Italian LOTE themes explored in the language activities include:
i pesci, l’habitat, le parti del corpo, la spiaggia / il mare, l’ecologia, i colori, le forme,
le descrizioni, la classificazione, il linguaggio scientifico e la difesa.
This education package includes:
Pre-visit activities and information about the exhibition that can be used to stimulate
students’ curiosity about the visit to the Museum and assist them in interpreting and
understanding what they will experience.
Post-visit activities designed to extend students’ understanding and follow-up their
experience of the excursion.
Le attività al museo Italian language activities that students can use when visiting the
exhibition Marine life: Exploring our seas. Attività A is suitable for Years 3-6 or Year 7
beginners. Attività B and Attività C are suitable for Years 6-9.
The teacher is advised to view all activities and choose those most suited to their student’s
ability and unit(s) of work.
Vocabolario contains the essential vocabulary to complete the language activities at the
museum and in the classroom.
Resources for teachers and students, including useful websites and a bibliography of
references for the topics covered in the Marine Life exhibition, as well as Italian resources
useful for developing a complete unit of work.

Learning in museums
Research suggests that students learn more in a museum if:
• Pre-visit preparation is carried out at school;
• Students have some choice and control over their learning experiences—ensure the
experience is student-centred;
• Teachers are familiar with the museum site; Museum Victoria offers free general entry for
teachers;
• Co-operative small groups are used and supervising adults accompany groups at all
times;
• Students are encouraged to talk and share ideas about what they are seeing, hearing
and touching;
• The visit to the museum is integrated into a broader learning experience at the school
level;
• Students share their findings in some sort of report or presentation back at school.
Pre-excursion checklist
Book well in advance (telephone Melbourne Museum: 1300 130 152), and check all details
when you receive your booking confirmation form.
•
Read and select activities.
•
Assign students and supervisors to small groups where appropriate.
•
Discuss the excursion activities and exhibition floor-plan with your students and with
assigned supervisors prior to the excursion.
•
Make enough photocopies of the selected excursion activities to provide copies for each
student or group where applicable, and for all supervisors.

Victorian Curricula links
This education package may be used as part of a unit of work within the framework of the
Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) to address learning focus statements of the
strands—Physical, Personal and Social Learning, Disciplinary learning and Interdisciplinary
learning.
The activities support the opportunities for students to demonstrate achievement in the
domains of Interpersonal Development and Personal Learning; Science, LOTE-Italian and
The Arts; Communication, Design Creativity and Technology, ICT and Thinking Processes.
The Italian language activities are based on the science themes found within the exhibition
Marine Life: Exploring our seas. It is advisable that the Italian LOTE teacher plans and liaises
with the classroom teacher or Science teacher to complement cross curricular opportunities
for science themes being dealt in Italian.
