ARE SHY PEOPLE AS SUBSTANTIAL AS TISSUE PAPER?
A story about the social and emotional aspects of Self Regulated Learning in an online course

The TD-SSIS 2005 course started with a socialisation activity where students were asked to choose
from seven kinds of boats: the sailboat, the caravel, the motorboat, the fishing boat, the cruise liner,
the submarine and the steamer. The navigation metaphor was adopted in the hope of facilitating the
expression of feelings and emotions. Trainees were supposed to get “on board” and negotiate with
their fellow sailors a motto and a suitable name for their boat. They were also asked to select the
boat that better reflected their state of mind in approaching the course and to express the reasons for
their choice.
F. was one of the participants who chose the motorboat. Under the cover of his identity as a
“sailor”, F. definitely let himself go and began behaving in quite a nasty way.
Here is his first message1:

A few of these messages were enough to put off most colleagues from joining the motorboat, so that
the tutors decided to ask the few sailors who had chosen that boat to move to another one2. Here is
F.’s post just before moving:

Although, at first, the tutors had decided to ignore these provocative messages, after this post and a
similar one sent by F. to the caravel it was decided to warn him that racist content and coarse
language would not be tolerated any more. From then on, F.’s participation in the course was quite
passive. He sent only a few messages and limited his contributions to course assignments. However,
he read assiduously most messages in the working areas and some of those of optional socialization
areas.
The tutors perceived that this problematic start up had prevented him from participating more
spontaneously in the rest of the course. At the end of the course, when participants were asked to

evaluate their own participation and provide feedback on the course from a meta-cognitive point of
view. At this stage F. revealed his frustration and the feeling of having missed an opportunity.

It has been a nice journey, adventurous, full of
obstacles and difficulties and internal struggles a sort
of mutiny disguised as a duty.
Perhaps I should have chosen the caravel that better
represented my being on the fringes of something
that I haven’t yet understood, something that is to be
loved because it is your life that is at stake, but you’d
prefer to be at Mondello beach sipping a Mojito and
have done with it.
Perhaps it is better if I get the motorboat and come
back to reality as soon as possible.

È stato un bel viaggio avventuroso pieno di ostacoli

Forse avrei dovuto scegliere la caravella che ha più
rappresentato il mio essere a margine di qualcosa
che forse non ho capito neanche adesso, di qualcosa
che si tratta di amare perché è la tua vita che ti
giochi, ma vorresti essere sulla spiaggia di Mondello
a sorseggiare un Mojito e mandare tutto a bagno.
Forse è meglio che prenda il motoscafo e torni alla
realtà prima possibile.

Dear F.,
your message really struck me. I had hoped that
sooner or later you would write it. Not exactly that, of
course; but something that would help me
understand that you are still here. In spite of
everything. In spite of and precisely because I knew
we had lost you from the very beginning, when you
tried to be there too in your slightly clumsy way (sorry
if I dare to call it that). Perhaps we didn’t understand,
none of us (neither you nor us tutors) realised that
perhaps we should have tried another way, or
perhaps we realised but we didn’t manage to. Or
rather this communication mode, that you say doesn’t
suit you, has made things worse. You know, despite
the drawbacks declared and trumpeted everywhere,
in my opinion CMC8 has a big asset: it allows you to
understand if you managed to get in tune with
somebody else or if his uneasiness has become
your own. Unfortunately there is no way to patch it
up, if not with a great effort.

mi hanno molto colpita le tue parole. Speravo che
prima o poi le scrivessi. Non esattamente queste,
certo; però qualcosa che mi facesse capire che c'eri
ancora, che eri ancora qui. Nonostante tutto.
Nonostante e proprio per questo, sapessi che ti
avevamo perso fin dall'inizio, quando nel tuo modo
un po' maldestro (scusa se mi permetto di qualificarlo
tale) hai provato ad esserci anche tu. Forse non
abbiamo capito, nessuno di noi (tu e noi tutor) ha
capito che forse bisognava tentare una strada
diversa, o forse lo abbiamo capito e non ci siamo
riusciti. O forse questa modalità di comunicare, che
dici non ti si addice, ha reso le cose più difficili. Sai,
nonostante i limiti dichiarati e strombazzati da più
parti, la CMC ha un grosso pregio secondo me: ti fa
comunque capire se sei riuscito ad entrare in sintonia
con l'altro o se il suo disagio diventa anche il tuo.
Solo che non hai modo di recuperarlo, se non a costo
di grandi sforzi.

Dear S.,
how difficult it is to pull myself together and feel that I
owe you an answer, to tell you that I have felt you
were close to me, but how can I go about it? How can
I tell you? I must have read your lines at least a
dozen times and the more I read the more I thought
things do not work like this, these are not the right
words and this is not what I expected. You symbolise
power - good grief - you are supposed to kill me - tell
me that I’m the wrong one – that I am the one who
must apologise and I’m the one who hasn’t
understood a f***ing thing. This is not the right
behaviour! It was so hard to generate a fair amount of
aggressivity and tension, a healthy bit of intellectual
conflict, and now what? Everybody admits guilt like in
Hollywood films. Damn it! The clash was supposed to
end with insults, swear words and fighting. But you
are a kindly soul and so no dead nor wounded.
Do you know what’s the best thing of all? It is that I
don’t even know what you look like, how you move,
how you talk, what perfume you wear.
And that you have been waiting for me all this time,
as if you were the wife of a sailor of a SNAV10
catamaran who lives in the Egadi islands and sees
her husband twice every two months.

volte e più leggevo più pensavo non è così che
vanno le cose, non sono queste le parole adatte non

F., if you meet him in person, is altogether different from what you would expect after having read
his messages, at least those that he sent to the forums of the TD-SSIS course. He appears to be quite
a normal, respectful, and serious person. After he was warned not to use improper language, he

turned up at ITD to explain his behaviour. He said he had thought we were playing around with the
CMC system and therefore that he could play too, but if what we wanted was that he took it
seriously, he would do his homework and never indulge in weird messages any more. In a way, he
felt the course tutors were censuring the content of the messages exchanged and, if he wasn’t free to
express himself, he would shut up forever.
