OLD STORY
The Selva Ski School was born in
1937 as a part of the ”Scuola nazionale di sci Val Gardena” (National Ski
School of the Val Gardena), which also
included the sections of Santa Christina and Ortisei. Each section had its
own director and the instructors wore
the same uniform – a grey jumper with
red writing. In the ’30’s there were
already several good skiers in Selva,
although few were officially qualified.
In 1932 the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) organised the first exams
for ski instructors in Clavière in the Val
di Susa and on the Stelvio glacier. Of
the 110 hopefuls 30 passed, amongst
them three from the Val Gardena; Hans
Delago, Matteo Demetz e Leo Perathoner. In the following years other exams
were held (in 1933 at Cortina, in 1936
at San Martino di Castrozza, in 1938 at
the Sella Pass) and the number of qualified instructors grew. At the same time
the first ski schools were being formed
at Stelvio, Cortina, Sestriere, Cervinia
and Ortisei (1935).

The war cut short tourist activity, but
after 1945 there was a rapid recovery:

school had already resumed its activities and from the 1950’s this activity
intensified.
From 1950 to 1965 Selva quintupled
the number of overnight stays from
73,500 to 362,000 per year. Skiing had
become the driving force of an entire

produced a significant advertising return for the whole valley. In the 20 years from 1965 to 1985, Selva more than
doubled its number of tourist beds, passing from 3,352 to 7,872 and reaching
the enviable figure of one million annual overnight stays. Also very important
was the establishment of the “Dolomiti
Superski” consortium in 1974, thanks to
which the dream of being able to ski in
a range of areas with one ski pass came
true. Today the Dolomiti Superski Pass
links 450 lifts in 12 Dolomite valleys as
well as 1200km of pistes.
The school today
The Selva ski school today continues the important commitment it began
75 years ago. The philosophy hasn’t
changed, although the numbers, the
organisational structure and context
have. There are over 100 ski instructors and staff members working at the
Headquarters and at the Plan de Gralba
branch.
To private lessons and collective
courses for children and adults, the ski

has added lessons and courses in snowboard, telemark, carving, cross-country
and introductions to competitive training, as well as special accelerated
courses for beginners.
Not to be forgotten are the inevitable
ski test, the end of course race and the

with the public. To this we add a varied
programme of events which is always in
tune with the underlying principles of
the ski school: to pass on our passion
for the splendid activity which goes by
