_ _ _ _ _ p q g Abstracts Jacopo Bozza: imprenditore siderurgico nell’Italia postunitaria, di Angelo Nesti This article traces back the entrepreneurial experience of Milan-born Jacopo Bozza, from his first initiatives in field of the telegraphy business in the Kingdom of Two Sicilies to the opening of ironworks in Tarquinia. The article is mostly focused on the central phase of this entrepreneurial experience, when Bozza became business partner of Joseph Alfred Novello at the Magona and after as he set up his own steel mill, La Perseveranza. The article studies the industrial assets and policies from 1865 to the end of 1870s when the industry was bought off by the Credito Immobiliare. Parole chiave: siderurgia, imprenditoria, Piombino Siderurgia antica e moderna in Campania: minacce e speranze, di Augusto Vitale For centuries the Elba island iron ore mines have supplied iron making activities in the Southern Italian region of Campania, both for traditional small private enterprises and huge public owned steel plants. This essay, deals in first place with the establishment of an early XIXth century iron foundry south of Naples, that proves the use of “low-fire” Catalan techniques in southern Italy, ad its restoration and transformation into a museum. In second place the article explains the events that have led to the successful preservation of a group of important buildings in the large Ilva steel plant in Bagnoli near Naples, such as the no. 4 blast furnace, the huge LD steel mill and the North Pier, recently opened to the public. Parole chiave: siderurgia, recupero, valorizzazione Memoria di un distretto industriale: gli archivi Ilva di Piombino nei primi anni Novanta del Novecento, di Angela Quattrucci Piombino and its surroundings are home to an exceptional concentration of evidences of the production and processing of iron. This article, after an overview of the history of the steel industry history of the city, emphasizes the close link between the industry and the urban development of the city, and focuses on the archives of the Ilva steelworks in Piombino to highlight the importance of the recovery of the industrial structures. This is especially relevant in the present context of uncertainty over the fate of the old blast furnace, not operational since the 1970s, a veritable monument of industrial archaeology and a symbol of the Piombino steelworks, and threatened by the renewal of technologies; The history of the blast furnace and that of men who have worked there, meticulously kept in the files of the Ilva archives, is today the memory of the economic, social and cultural history of that city. The huge costs involved, and the technical difficulties to be resolved, are unquestionably factors that tend to discourage programs aimed at protecting heritage features whose conservation is so problematic. However, in recent years it has become possible to point to an appreciable number of successful case studies - Coalbrookdale (Ironbridge), Blaenavon (Galles), Völklinger Hütte and Duisburg Nord Landscape Park (Ruhr) - which constitute best practices, and benchmarks for future interventions for the enhancement of the iron and steel heritage in Europe. For each of these case studies, this essay illustrates the circumstances whereby the heritage was saved from destruction, as well as the forms of management which make it available for use by the public. The fact that the first three sites are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites has provided the Author with an opportunity to compare the unique and authentic values on the basis of which they appear on the UNESCO List. After the economic crisis of the seventies, the steel and mining industries in the southern region of Luxembourg left a huge wasteland in the region. In spite of the fact that certain electrical steelworks are still active, many of the infrastructures and other vast areas became available after the closure of the mining and cast iron manufacturing industries. Since that time the area has been the object of reclamation and requalification programs in an attempt to provide this industrial heritage with a cultural value in order to maintain the economic pole of the country operative. _ _ _ _ _ p q g 710 ABSTRACTS The creation of the “Agora” company in 2000 marked the launching of an ambitious project for the urban reconversion of the abandoned steel-works industrial area of Belval-ouest. The requalification of this huge steel industrial area, covering over 120 hectares, launched the beginnings of important economic, administrative, and residential development projects, which will be completed with the construction of the future university of Luxembourg. This project also focuses on the Government’s decentralisation policy in offering a strong input to the new economic development of the former mining region. Preserving the Blast Furnace Plant Phoenix West in Dortmund, Germany – a Case Study, di Rasmus Radach e Christoph Winterling The urban development project Phoenix West in Dortmund, Germany, could be an alternative strategy for the preservation of large industrial heritage sites in times of decreasing public funding. In order to retain a blast furnace plant as an identity-providing core to a new business location, the monument was secured with development funding for the promotion of trade and industry from the European Union in preparation for a sale to a private sector investor. By identifying the essentials of the listed facilities, concentrating on sustainable interventions and permitting a suitable re-use of selected areas, the conflicting interests of limited financial risk for investors, minimal public funding for safeguarding and effective monument protection were equally accommodated. Originally designated for marketing purposes, a visitors‘ pathway was used as a strategic instrument for the plant gradual securing assuring the new location an unmistakable identity by preserving the essentials of an inconvenient and complex industrial heritage. Parole chiave: archeologia industriale, siderurgia, Dortmund, Germania La forge de Dampierre-sur-Blevy, di Geneviève Dufresne Classified as a historic monument in 1994, the large blast furnace of Dampierre-sur-Blévy constitutes a rare example of a great iron forge operated using hydraulic energy and dating back to the period of Louis XIV (at the end of the 17th century). Located in the department of the Eure-et-Loir, about 40 kilometres north of the city of Chartres, this blast furnace was created on the initiative of a member of the aristocracy: the prince of Condé. The furnace has remained miraculously intact till the present day and is in an excellent state of conservation. The buildings form a wonderful complex in an exceptional site: the large home of the master foundryman, the double-height blast furnace (one of the rare examples still to be found in France) the coal deposit, and the foundry workers’ housing, are located in an area of 26 hectares surrounded by century-old trees and where the local water course flows through a lock 200 metres long. The great furnace of Dampierre-sur-Blévy played an incisive role between the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century in the production of artillery. Its unusual features and techniques, so modern for its period, formed a forge of extraordinary importance which made a huge contribution to the wealth and military power of France. The writings consist of an homogeneous papers of 184 sheets not numbered (368 pages), separated in two parts lists: her before reserved character, destined to the heirs, where the origin of the family (from Rossiglione Valle Stura, Liguria) and the personal and entrepreneurial odyssey of the author (210 pages) it is reassumed; the second, devoted Charles Filangieri of Satriano, authoritative character of Court, known entrepreneur and protector of the author, destined to the presses with the title “Practical memories on the art of the iron manufacture to the Catalan use in the Kingdom in Naples (1842)”, but remained nevertheless outstanding, perhaps because the modernization of the ways of production quickly made the contents of artisan practice of it obsolete. We would like to see the future publication of the manuscript in a single volume. After a literature overview, we focuses especially on operators training and the realisation of a grid theme to use as a track. In the study of industrial heritage, the audio interview or video may be decisive in the following fields: processes and work organization; reconstruction of idustrial factory; condition of workers; study of industrial villages; technical innovation in product and process used on site. The article then reported as an indication methodological the work done within the institution Leonardo IRTA: to systematize many interviews on the history of the rural world, we organized and developed a database to catalog and use all information contained. Keywords: Oral interview, video interview, industrial heritage, computerization L’articolo esamina le potenzialità delle fonti orali nello studio del patrimonio industriale.
