An internationally recognised academic award NABA is a non-state Institute, which is legally recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and issues the Bachelor of Arts Honours award (three-year course) and the Master of Arts award (two-year course). The diplomas awarded are valid in all European Countries and in all Countries outside Europe that have a bilateral agreement with Italy on recognition of academic qualifications. Teaching staff All members of staff are successful artists and designers, bringing their experience and knowledge from the professional work sphere to the academy, and enabling students to excel under their guidance. Over the years, NABA has also collaborated with some of the most prestigious brands in the design industry: Alcantara, Coveri, Fiat Auto, Fiera Milano International, Guzzini, Krizia, La Perla, L’Oréal, Luxottica, Max Mara, Miss Sixty, Frau, Swarovski. Twenty-five years of activity NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti was formed in 1980 around a group of internationally renowed artists: Gianni Colombo, Lucio del Pezzo, Emilio Tadini, Guido Ballo. It was in fact Guido Ballo who wanted to give it the definition “Nuova”(New) to indicate its innovative spirit geared towards “experimental manual skills and design”. NABA was founded in Milan, recognised capital of fashion, advertising, publishing and design and is located in the historical Navigli area of Milan. This is one of the loveliest and liveliness districts of the city. The premises are inside a late nineteenth century industrial complex that has recently been refurbished and has considerable architectural value. 2 Location: Milan The city of Milan is synonymous with cutting edge fashion and design. It is the heart of modern Italy. Surrounded by a centuries old environment it also provides an outstanding opportunity for students to explore the possibilities of tomorrow within the context of an evolving European/world culture. Milan is the place to attend international events, exhibitions and trade fairs such as the International Furniture Fair. The creative industries, embracing international Design studios, cool hunting agencies, communication and graphic design companies, television production companies, theatres, art galleries, museums and industrial production, make Milan a unique place to experience creativity and understand production processes. Milan’s central location provides easy access to major Italian cities such as Rome, Florence and Venice, while La Scala theatre and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper are just two of the historical sites that are easily accessible from NABA. Disciplinary Areas NABA training programs are contained by four areas: Visual Arts, Communication, Design and Restoration. The three-year BA Hons degree programs are: Visual Arts, Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Graphic Design and Art Direction, Media Design and Theatre Design. A three-year degree program in Restoration is being planned, in addition to two-year specialisation programs (Master of Arts) in the Design, Fashion Design, Communication and Visual Arts areas. A two-year professional program in Restoration is offered in collaboration with the Accademia Italiana di Restauro. Besides University degree level and specialisation programs, NABA offers Certificate Programs which are open programs, available for one academic semester or academic year and Summer programs held in English in the subjects of Interior Design, Industrial Design, Fashion Design and Graphic Design. Area Visual Arts 4 BA Hons Visual Arts provides training in a wide range of artistic techniques, allowing for individual experimentation and the reconsideration of a traditional academic approach. Students are encouraged to investigate the relationship between a work of art and the artistic process and the relationship between art and design. The program retains the central role of painting and proposes numerous technical and disciplinary approaches that extend to sculpture, video art, photography, and cinema. Special emphasis is set on the social dimension of the visual arts. Area Communication BA Hons Graphic Design and Art Direction trains undergraduates for positions in the graphic design and advertising sectors (graphic designer, art director, multimedia director, web designer). Students learn the techniques and methods of free hand and computer aided representation, form creation, icons and communicative solutions for graphic design projects, advertising and digital animation. The program offers an alternative to university courses in this field as it focuses on the development of technical design skills and a cultural approach. 6 BA Hons Media Design trains professional figures for the performing arts and film sectors (writers, audiovisual directors, creators and developers of animations, screenplays, characters and digital visual effects for the cinema, television, and the performing arts). The designer responsible for Media Design is given solid theoretical bases that function as a matrix to delineate professional skills toward the electronic arts (video, multimedia, 3D modeling and animation) and in the production and post-production cinema and television sector. Area Design BA Hons Design offers a training program relating to the wide-ranging themes of design culture and the professional fields of product, interior and exhibition design. The course aims to provide the essential technical and methodological tools (ergonomics, modeling, design, cad), which enable students to build an informed response to the evolving needs of the professional world and capably take up positions in companies and studios, supporting the design and production of objects, spaces and interiors. 8 BA Hons Theatre Design trains a professional figure that works alongside the director, costume designer, light designer and craftspeople that create an artistic product, in many different sectors, but constantly require a strong methodology and expertise. The program aims to train the student for work that involves conceptual and creative preparation but also demands practical sensibility and crafting ability. The combination of cultural-historical study and practical work is enriched by the possibility to gain real experience in the field. BA Hons Fashion and Textile Design offers a complete university level training program in the field through the development of technical design skills and artistic cultural sensitivity. The program deals with all aspects of the textile clothing “system”: from a deep knowledge of materials to applied creativity in textile design; from style creation and modeling techniques, to the design of a collection and the accessory. The professional profile of this figure is that of a stylist and creative director that can work in fashion house design offices (prêt-à-porter, high fashion), showrooms, textiles-clothing production companies, sartorial studios, design and production studios. 10 International Relations Office The International Relations Office has four branches: Europe, North America, South America and Asia.
