A question of style
Ophelia Deroy teaches philosophy of science and epistemology in University
of Paris XII while achieving her doctoral thesis. She belongs to the Institut
Jean Nicod in Paris. She obtained the 2006 Jean Schneider Award for
philosophy, delivered by the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris, and has
been a associate fellow at the Institute of Philosophy in London. She
contributed to the volume Questions of Taste, edited by Barry Smith.
Ophelia Deroy, nel periodo in cui consegue la propria tesi di dottorato, insegna
filosofia della scienza ed epistemologia all’Università di Parigi XII. Intrattiene
rapporti con l’Istituto Jean Nicod di Paris. Nel 2006 ha ottenuto il premio Jean

Styles : marks of distinction or tools for comparisons ?
Taste a 2002 Dauvissat Chablis Les Preuses; then for the comparison, try
a Raveneau. Same year, same parcel, yet so different, so individual. You
could not mistake one for the other. Of course, you may wonder which
one is the Dauvissat and which one is the Raveneau, but you would never
doubt there are not the same (2). But how come? These wines have been
produced on the very same terroir, the grapes they are made of have
matured under the same climate and the vines have grown on the same
kind of soil. Had you tasted the grape from Raveneau’s and Dauvissat’s
parcels you would not have been able to tell the difference. Yet from the
very same kind of material are produced these incredibly distinctive wines.
Wondering about style is one way, among many, to address an on-going
problem: what does make a wine so unique? Terroir and vintage can often
be the answer, but yet they fall short of explaining the ultimate differences
between wines. A lot of the individuality of a wine comes from the place
and the year’s climatic conditions for sure, yet there is a residual distinction

Assaggiate uno Chablis Les Preuses di Dauvissat del 2002; poi, per fare un paragone,
provate un Raveneau. Stesso anno, stesso lotto, tuttavia così diversi, così personali.
Non potreste confonderli. Sicuramente potreste domandarvi qual è il Dauvissat e
quale il Raveneau ma non potrete mai mettere in dubbio che siano la stessa cosa2.
Come mai? Questi vini sono stati prodotti esattamente sulla stessa terra, i grappoli
da cui sono tratti sono maturati nello stesso clima e le viti sono cresciute sullo stesso
tipo di terreno. Se aveste assaggiato l’uva dei lotti di Raveneau e Dauvissat non
sareste stati in grado di dirne la differenza. Eppure dallo stesso tipo di materiale si
producono questi vini che presentano queste incredibili peculiarità. Meravigliarsi
dello stile è un modo, tra tanti altri, di affrontare un problema attuale e in crescita:
che cosa è che rende un vino così unico? La risposta spesso può essere data dal terreno
e dalla vendemmia, ma non sono sufficienti a spiegare le differenze fondamentali
tra i vini. Una gran parte dell’individualità del vino deriva certamente dal luogo
e dalle condizioni climatiche di quell’anno, tuttavia esiste una distinzione essenziale
di cui bisogna tener conto. Quando le etichette riportano la stessa denominazione,
