The choice of a JD at UCL is a very important one, as the last year of master spent there is completely
different from Bocconi's, and a final assessment of this experience really varies from person to person.
However, there are some points on which everyone agrees. First: the program in Louvain has a much
more theoretical approach, everyone has to attend two courses in macro, two in micro and a research
seminar, which are very useful for anyone who is interested in a Phd. Also elective courses adopt a
much more theoretical cut, with respect to the corresponding ones in Milan. Second: classes are small
(no more than 20 people), the environment is very (very!) collaborative and students come from
different backgrounds and parts of the world. Personally, it was an enriching experience, though I do
not recommend it to those who prefer a more practice- oriented study plan and who would like to
have a wider knowledge of the different sub-disciplines in economics.

docenti, qualità della didattica, procedure amministrative, qualità delle informazioni)/
Please list the main differences with Bocconi’s academic system (relation with the professors,
teaching quality, administrative procedures, quality of information).
To begin, there are less hours of class, since each course worths 5 credits. Often courses are
concentrated in a month period of 2 months, especially in the second semester, and personally I
consider it a very negative aspect, since managing time gets way harder. Classes are small and the
relationship with professors is more direct. Louvain is full of biblios, study room, computer rooms
open until late (some even 24h/24h), photocopying and printing is never harmful and this is surely a
plus respect to Bocconi. Be aware of the different timing of the thesis . I recommend to start thinking
about it already in September since in April every student has to present the idea of his thesis in a
seminar. Finally, less material is provided by professors for the exam: differently from Bocconi, we
almost never had mock exams to practice on. Exams are generally concentrated in a very short time
period, and each exam lasts 3h, which is another important difference towards Milan.

di svolgimento del lavoro/Thesis: please describe how you have managed the relationship with
Italian and foreign professors and the timing for completing the work.
I personally suggest to choose a Professor from Bocconi who already knows you, as managing a thesis
by mail is impossible otherwise. Having two supervisors can be an important opportunity to do a
good thesis, but sometimes it can be a hindrance which slows the development of the work. In this
respect I was very lucky. Differently from Bocconi, here Professors prefer students to finish in
September (indeed only JD students can graduate in January at no cost), so it would be better to work
on the thesis throughout the year. But, especially for certain subjects, it is very hard to do so. In
general, I suggest to choose a supervisor who pretends frequent meetings and who helps you
organizing your work by giving you deadlines and suggestions, in this I was less lucky! If you are
planning to graduate in January, let the Belgian professor be aware of that in time, cause not all of
them would support you in this decision, though most of the times there is no problem in this respect.

Yes, a French course, though I kept it out of my study plan.

Quali corsi hai trovato più interessanti e quali eventualmente hanno presentato problemi?/ Which
courses did you find as the most interesting and which ones have shown critical aspects?
Most interesting ones: Adv Micro 1: deep and very enriching. The Professor is excellent and even if
micro is not your field, it is going to be a very involving course. The text used is a Phd one (MasColell, Whinston and Green) and we are weekly assigned PS (not graded) which require deep
thinking. Adv. Macro 1: Fundamental (especially the secod part on DSGE) for anyone who is
interested in macro as we are provided the main tools to read and solve New Keynesian models. In
this respect, it is an excellent course. On the other hand, if your interest is more in macroeconometrics,
UCL does not provide any course on that. History of Ec. Thought: I really recommend it. Dyn
Methods: much of the course overlaps with the Adv Math's syllabus at Bocconi. But the way this
subject is taught gave me a very different perspective on this topic. Monetary Economics: very very
useful as it was 100% Dynare- oriented. Unfortunately it will not be provided next year.

I found a studio privately. Avoid KOT.

Louvain is expensive, but for the beer.

Aspetti positivi: 1 - i corsi sono molto ben fatti e piuttosto approfonditi. Anche se sono spesso
abbastanza quantitativi, il corso di matematica al DES da' tutti gli strumenti necessari per affrontare i
corsi senza problemi. 2 - Se vi ci mettete, si puo' imparare molto bene il francese. 3 - L'ambiente e'
molto piu' rilassato che in Bocconi, c'e' molta piu' collaborazione tra studenti 4 - Se al primo appello
avete preso un voto che non vi aggrada, potete risostenerlo al secondo appello. Aspetti negativi: 1
- E' difficile trovare dei corsi applicati (salvo Microeconometrics). Essendo un Research Master, i corsi
sono quasi tutti completamente teorici. 2 - Molti esami presentano assignment da svolgere durante
il corso, e se dovete farne piu' di uno o due nello stesso periodo per corsi diversi, diventa una cosa
abbastanza pesante. In generale la mole di lavoro e' un attimino piu' alta che in Bocconi, ma
ovviamente dipende anche da che corsi opzionali scegliete

Le classi sono molto meno numerose rispetto a quelle in Bocconi, il che aiuta il rapporto col docente
che spesso risulta anche piu' informale. I professori che ho incontrato sono stati quasi tutti degli ottimi
insegnanti e piu' che disponibili a fornire materiale per un approfondimento personale. I corsi, data la
durata limitata di 30 ore, sono molto compressi e la velocita' con cui si prosegue e' spesso piuttosto
alta. Per quanto riguarda le procedure amministrative, non ho incontrato particolari problemi, si
tratta di procedure standard per iscrizione, ecc... L'unica cosa a cui bisogna fare MOLTA attenzione e'
che e' possibile registrarsi agli esami solo in due giorni che vi verranno comunicati via email,
altrimenti non potrete sostenere gli esami!!!!!! E c'e' solo una sessione di esami sia a Gennaio che a
Giugno, non esistono le sessioni di Febbraio e Luglio. Quindi se non passate un esame o vi ritirate lo
dovrete risostenere a Settembre.

Io la sto ancora scrivendo, pero' in generale il prodotto finale deve essere intorno alle 20 pagine (piu'
corto della media in Bocconi), e quindi le tempistiche di svolgimento non sono lunghissime (direi tre
mesi circa, ma non avendola ancora completata non ne sono sicuro). Il professore che ho contattato e'
stato molto disponibile, mi ha addirittura suggerito l'argomento con una chiara domanda di ricerca
fin dall'inizio. Io ho avuto alcune difficolta' perche' non sono riuscito ad avere accesso ad un dataset
che mi serviva e quindi ho dovuto un po' cambiare l'orientamento della tesi, ma purtroppo sono cose
che capitano ovunque.

Non ho usufruito molto del Career Service, comunque circa ogni mese vi arrivera' sulla casella di
posta una email contenente molte offerte di lavoro in Belgio, sia in aziende private che in enti pubblici
e universitari. Vale la pena darci un'occhiata, ci sono molte opportunita' interessanti! Certo, la buona
conoscenza del francese e' un prerequisito per praticamente tutte le offerte (a volte chiedono anche
l'olandese ma non sempre).
L'università partner ti ha dato la possibilità di sostenere un corso di lingua? Se si, quale?/Did you

Si', ho sostenuto il primo semestre un corso B2 di francese all'Institut des Langues Vivantes, che e'il
luogo dove si tengono i corsi di lingua. E' un buon corso, porta via un po' di tempo (6 ore la
settimana), ma secondo me ne vale assolutamente la pena perche' vi accorgerete che anche solo per
andare in giro masticare un po' di francese e' necessario.

Ho seguito i seguenti corsi: DYNAMICAL METHODS IN ECONOMICS, ADVANCED
MICROECONOMICS I & II, ADVANCED MACROECONOMICS I & II, PUBLIC ECONOMICS,
HISTORY OF ECONOMIC THOUGHT, e ECONOMETRICS WORKSHOP. Micro I e Macro II sono
sicuramente i piu' tosti. I piu' interessanti, almeno nella mia opinione, Macro II (che parla di crescita
nel lungo termine) e Public Economics (Fiscal Federalism, Tax competition, etc...). NON FATE
ASSOLUTAMENTE il seminario di Econometria, spesso vengono presentati paper che richiedono
basi che non abbiamo anche solo per capire di cosa si sta parlando. All'esame bisogna scegliere tre
paper e presentarli, ma i voti sono stati un po' per tutti assurdamente bassi (la media e' molto
inferiore rispetto agli altri due seminari). DA EVITARE.

Io ho soggiornato in un appartamento privato trovato via Internet. Eravamo in una casa grande da 5,
con lavastoviglie e lavatrice e pagavo 370 al mese spese incluse. Volendo si puo' stare nei Kot, le
residenze universitarie, che e' un ottimo modo per conoscere gente. Sappiate in anticipo che i belgi
non hanno la minima conoscenza del concetto del "lavare i piatti", quindi le cucine in comune dei Kot
sono spesso e volentieri uno schifo. In generale l'igiene non e' il punto forte dei Kot.

Spesa per una settimana circa per due persone: circa 50 e Biglietto A/R da Bruxelles: circa 9 e, 5e nei
weekend. Go-Pass 10 viaggi valido su qualsiasi stazione belga: 50 e (molto conveniente per farsi un
po' di turismo!) Assicurazione: non ne ho idea
