The long artistic artist Armenian Zaven Karapetyan presented for the first time in Milan with a personal retrospective, in Brera, the artistic heart of the city in Milan. A path that has certainly a common matrix, that of a deep spirituality. In his icons we can clearly see a vocation for what is defined as “the Absolute”, and is intense and moving at the same time. His miniatures - some examples of which can be seen in his own retrospective -, drawings and paintings of the beginning of his artistic career transmit accuracy of signs and color with a clear and exquisite stylistic matrix medieval, Byzantine. The artist converges in philosophical thought that sees good and evil as two aspects of living with and inseparable from each other; only the ‘”Infinite”, the union with the “Everything” or the “One” can let prevail the good that is inherent in every human being. TESTI A CURA DI Massimiliano Bisazza AUTORE DELLE OPERE Zaven Karapetyan IN COPERTINA - DETTAGLIO Poised between figuration and an initial informal gestures and full of deep feeling, Zaven Karapetyan is located on the edge of abstraction where the intense ties to the figurative form disappear in recent years, giving wider to “gesture” that was born a reflection that the artist has with his “I” more profound. ENTRATA IN GERUSALEMME 2002 150x200 cm olio su tela 2 3 I am strongly able to note an intense study and love of the great masters of the ‘900 (observing the works of Zaven Karapetyan see a healthy influence of Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse) and feel as the origins of the Armenian and Russian are inherent in the DNA of artist himself and can guide him unconsciously towards magic and mystery that are typical of the “classical” Russian. In my opinion there is no investigation as to the romance but I sense the powerful symbolism that tell of man as such crossing and well above the threshold of the concept of “territory” for its own sake: for Zaven Karapetyan has humanity more than the idea of a single country, although there is talk of his own. Looking at the works in chronological order and thus arrive until the very last artistic production; I can say that the work transcends the rational, it is the result of a deep experience of life and great suffering, through which, Zaven artist, as each of us, in spite of himself he had to confront. This root expressionistic reaches me directly in the chest, to the retina to the brain; I flinch in the face of much pathos and the painter’s ability to know transmit with the aid of the brush and a spatula soaked in pure color and pure soul. The equation is clear Zaven artist, art = suffering. who has not suffered is not able to understand or to make art with that emphasis needed for it to come and live-giving directly in the eyes of the beholder. The user who searches the works of Zaven Karapetyan must necessarily arise in front of his paintings, free of any pre-conditioning or mental cultural and must leave freely enter the most authentic feelings in heart and soul. The works of Zaven Karapetyan are never inclined to “true nature”, but is heavy with the lyrical introspection in which the energetic poetic vital knows prevail even on the media, with the help of the materiality daughter pigment carefully chosen. Indeed, the balance of the composition and colors is skilfully harmonized by that artist mature, elegant and fruitful which is Zaven Karapetyan. Last but not least I wish to underline that the concept of “freedom” is joined to the essence of this artist. Free is the one who knows how to love, away from external influences. This masterful world can be seen in his paintings, where the lights allows visibility in the order and the canvas is “the” place of creation and of fertilization of an art project that is noble, intimate and dignified. “I want to achieve above all else is the expression ... The expression for me, not in the passion that suddenly appear on a face or that will emerge with a violent movement. And the whole arrangement of my picture: the place they occupy or bodies, the gaps that are around them. The proportions, everything has its place. The composition is the art of arranging (...) the different elements of which the painting has to express their feelings ... A work involves fits together; take any superfluous detail, in the spirit of the viewer, the place of a particular essential. The composition, which should point to the expression changes with the surface to be covered.
