È alta e snella, sulla cinquantina, coi capelli grigi. È piena di energia e di compassione. S’interessa in una piccola associazione di assistenza sociale, fondata dai volontari. Lo scopo del gruppo è di aiutare profughi, perfino clandestini, recentemente arrivati dalla Somalia e dal Sudan, di inserirsi nella società italiana. Il problema della disoccupazione è diffuso in Italia ed i rifugiati sognano solo i lavori più modesti, come il lavoratore a giornata, la donna di servizio, lo spazzino e, negli ultimi anni, curando le vecchie persone a domicilio. Ma anche per questi si richiede la lingua italiana, e Rosanna, due o tre volte la settimana nel tardo pomeriggio, dà lezioni d’italiano a piccoli gruppi. Pure suo marito John Brown, inglese, ma residente da molti anni in Italia e che si occupa nel campo dell’informatica, dà una mano alla moglie durante queste lezioni. Sono una coppia che ammiro molto. Sono le dieci di mattina e da un’ oretta il treno corre lungo la costa della Calabria. Sai? Stamane ho attraversato lo Stretto di Messina in uno dei traghetti che portano anche il treno che va a Napoli. Durante la traversata, che dura circa venti minuti, non ho visto molti turisti perchè siamo già in autunno, ma c’erano molte donne e uomini siciliani che portavano frutta e legumi ad un mercato in Calabria. La Sicilia è stata una rivelazione. È così diversa dal resto dell’Italia e il miscuglio di vicino oriente e d’occidente, di antico e moderno le dà un fascino speciale. Certamente tu, come italiana, dovresti fare un viaggio nell’Italia del Sud per conoscere meglio il tuo paese. Io volevo tanto fare il giro di tutta la Sicilia, ma ci sarebbe voluto troppo tempo, così mi sono dovuto contentare di visitare solamente Siracusa, Catania, Taormina e Messina dove ho preso il treno per il viaggio di ritorno. Devo confessare che Taormina mi ha affascinato: dovevo rimanerci un giorno e mezzo e invece ci sono rimasto quattro giorni interi. Sebbene sia quasi già ottobre sono potuto andare a nuotare tutti giorni. L’acqua non è punto fredda e, inoltre, non è inquinata come vicino ad alcuni porti. Ed ora, eccomi in treno lungo la costa della Calabria. Di quando in quando si vede la meravigliosa Autostrada del Sole che viene da Milano. Quanti ponti e quante gallerie!
