Since its creation in 1902, Real Madrid has been a Club with a universal vocation. Therefore, we are especially satisfied and proud of creating “The Real Madrid Friends' Association in the European Union”, which will become a reality in June 2007 and which is aimed at merging Europeanism and sport. This initiative would not have been possible without the support of the European Parliament, especially its President, Hans Gert-Pötering, and the Spanish MEPs Gerardo Galeote of the Spanish People’s Party and Elena Valenciano of the Spanish Socialist Party, who were our best collaborators on the field. I would also like to highlight that the initiative has had the support of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, since the outset. Thanks to everyone for their sincere support. Best wishes. Mr. Ramón Calderón President of Real Madrid C.F. D. Ramón Calderón Presidente del Real Madrid C.F. 5 The first shield of Real Madrid and the first official trophy El primer escudo del Real Madrid y el primer trofeo oficial The Real Madrid - a Legend Thus the champions of Spain of 1905 put for the posterity. El Madrid hizo de su leyenda un mito Castellana Avenue, the great Madrid thoroughfare, is home to two of the institutions that fill the inhabitants of the capital city of Spain with pride: the Prado Museum and Real Madrid. Precisely, the Madrid Foot Ball Club, the most modern club at that time and the club that would eventually become a universal institution, was established in this city at the beginning of the 20th century. The Club was founded on 6th March 1902. Lost in the mist of time are the first steps of a group of pioneers who, in spite of the criticism, tried hard to introduce the young people of the time to a new sport that had reached Spain from abroad and that was still in its infancy. 7 A Madrid-Athletic Club in the field of Or `Donnell, the second field in the history of Real Madrid. El Sky, progenitor del Madrid In Madrid, open-minded youths, linked to the "Institución Libre de Enseñanza" (Free Institution for Education) sowed the seeds that enabled football to develop with solid roots. In 1900, a breakaway group of players from Sky - the forerunner of Real Madrid - began to create what would, two years later, become the Madrid Foot Ball Club. A courageous Julián Palacios, the first unofficial chairman, began to establish the basis of what would become an admired institution. The Padrós brothers (Juan and Carlos) joined this group. They were the architects of the first Madrid Championship, Spanish Championship, the Madrid Football Association, the Spanish Football Association and backed the creation of FIFA in 1904. Although Juan Padrós did an excellent job during his two years in charge, his brother, Carlos, who took over from him, became the most outstanding chairman of the Madrid team (which was granted the title of "Real" (Royal) by King Alfonso XIII in 1929) and of Spanish football. 9 This image corresponds to the inauguration of the new field of Chamartín. Un estilo único The history of Real Madrid began to shine from the moment the team was created. A Club that had the makings of a champion had been born. In the first decade of the 20th century, the Club won the King's Cup and was entitled to keep it after winning the competition four times running (1905 to 1908). Years later, in 1912, the Bernabéu family arrived on the scene. Antonio, Marcelo and Santiago Bernabéu left their mark in the history of the club. Antonio was an organiser; he founded Bolonia and became chairman of the Spanish Football Association; Marcelo was an excellent player, and Santiago participated at all levels: player, delegate, secretary, coach and chairman. Santiago Bernabéu became chairman on 15 September 1943 and provided Real Madrid with a unique style. 11 Juan Alonso carrying the third Glass of Europe that Madrid conquered in Brussels. Admirado y respetado After being dissociated from the club for almost eight years, Santiago Bernabéu's return was decisive, as the institution acquired a peculiar style: the new Chamartín stadium was built, the team's fighting spirit, gentlemanliness and style were displayed throughout the five continents and, all in all, Real Madrid became admired and respected throughout the world, both as a football team and as a basketball team. This tireless task performed by Bernabéu was supported by an incomparable genius, Alfredo di Stéfano, and by other club managers, especially Raimundo Saporta, who opened the Spanish borders to Europe and made Real Madrid the best "Ambassador for Spain”. That team that Bernabéu created in the mid-fifties astonished the entire planet by winning five European Cups in a row and the first Intercontinental cup (1956 to 1960). The end of the fifth Cup of Europe, between Real Madrid and the Eintracht de Franfort, was the best one of history. It overcame Madrid by 7-3. In the image, Puskas, marks the sixth goal of the encounter. Six years later, a new generation of players, several of whom had come up through the junior ranks of the team, won the sixth European Cup. Towards the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, three more European Cups were added to Real Madrid's list of achievements, together with two UEFA Cups won in 1985 and 1986 respectively and one European Supercup in 2002. These international trophies must be added to a large number of national League and King's Cup trophies. Of left to right: Butragueño, Pardeza (with the t-shirt of the Zaragoza), Míchel, Sánchís and Martin Vázquez. The “quinta” equalled the record In 1984, Madrid won to the Anderlecht by 6-1, with three goals work of Butragueño. In the photography,“El Buitre” obtains as much fifth at night. La “quinta” igualó el récord The dedication and professional pride with which Alfredo di Stéfano wore the Real Madrid shirt and that was passed on to great players such as Puskas, Kopa, Rial, Gento…, was recognised by the following generations that wore that same shirt. Therefore, it is no surprise that, in the seventies, the prestigious magazine “France Football” granted Real Madrid the Best Team in Europe award in the 1979-80 season. This tradition was continued, years later, by the famous “Quinta del Buitre”, which matched the epic deed of winnings five consecutive Leagues (1985 to 1990), equalling the achievement of that former dream-team between 1960 and 1965. 15 The players of Madrid celebrating the ninth title of the Glass of Europe. Una huella indeleble When the last century was coming to a close and the new one was just commencing, another legendary team, led by Zinedine Zidane, with Casillas in the goal, with a solid defence, a creative centre field and efficient forwards, with Raul on his way to establishing himself as a legend, once again marvelled Europe and the rest of the world with its football. A number of emblematic players that, after the first five years of the 21st century, were replaced by Beckham, Van Nistelrroy, Cannavaro…, maintaining the lasting impression common to all those that preceded them. A similar story can be told of Real Madrid's basketball team since its creation, back in the month of March, 1931. Its list of achievements includes winning all the continental competitions; a team that, in the sixties, was considered the King of Europe. 17 The FIFA gave to Real Madrid the trophy as the Best Club of Century XX. A legion of Madrid enthusiasts Una legión de madridistas It is a well-known fact that Madrid is not only a universal team from a sporting point of view, but also from a social viewpoint. The Fundación del Real Madrid (Real Madrid Foundation) has existed for over ten years and has become a leading sports foundation thanks to its indisputable social work. More specifically, the creation of Social Integration Schools in Spain and abroad for Spanish and immigrant children, as well as other initiatives that have been highly praised by national and international institutions. Furthermore, a legion of Madrid supporters can be found throughout the world. There are currently 1,795 supporters' clubs in Spain, 54 on the five continents, almost 350,000 people holding membership cards and 250 million Real Madrid followers throughout the world. A panoramic one of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium filled with fans. At the present time, Madrid counts with more than 250 million madridistas followers. Clearly, and with no intention of being presumptuous, the history of Real Madrid over its 105 years of existence has turned into a legend. Not surprisingly, on 11th December 2000, Real Madrid was appointed by the FIFA as the Best Club XX Century. The greatness of Basketball La grandeza del baloncesto Real Madrid’s Basketball team, which has won record trophies in Europe, was founded by chance to supplement the football club in 1931 and soon became a fundamental part of the entity. A glorious period emerged in the 1960s, which lasted over one decade: the team gradually dominated all the national competitions in Spain (the National League and the Spanish Cup) and climbed to the top of the Old Continent, where Real Madrid became the King of Europe. In time, the greatness of the Real Madrid basketball team, which has always responded with victories no matter what, has become a substantial and indissoluble part of the world’s greatest Club. The full players of the Madrid of basketball of joy after obtaining ULEB Cup, only international trophy that lacked in its display cabinets.
