Adverbial expressions used with the present
continuous tense. Here is a list of adverbial
expressions that are often used when we use the
present continuous:

these days
currently, at present
at the moment
right now, just now
nowadays
this week, this year
today
tonight
this morning, this afternoon, this evening

Now let's see where these adverbial expressions
are placed in sentences.
With the exception of "now" and "currently",
they cannot be placed mid-sentence.
Vediamo adesso dove vengono inserite queste
espressioni avverbiali all’interno delle frasi. Ad
eccezione di “now” (adesso) e “currently”(in
questo momento), non possono essere inseriti
nel mezzo di una frase.
They can only be placed at the beginning or end of
a sentence but are usually placed at the end of a
sentence.
Queste, infatti, possono essere inserite solo

- "I'm studying English at the moment"

To add special emphasis, you can also say:

You should not say: "I'm at the moment studying
English". This is a mistake.

"Now" can be placed mid-sentence (after the verb
"to be", in this case), but is generally placed at the
end of sentences, except when given special
emphasis:
- "Now I'm studying English" or "I'm now
studying English" or "I'm studying English now"
“Now” può essere messo nel mezzo della frase
(in questo caso dopo il verbo “to be”-essere),
ma generalmente viene inserito a fine frase,
tranne nei casi in cui si vuol dare maggior

"Currently" can be placed beginning or mid or
end-sentence but is normally placed midsentence:
“Currently” può essere messo a inizio, a metà
o a fine frase, però generalmente viene inserito
nel mezzo della frase:
- "He is currently working in Paris"
- “In questo periodo lavora a Parigi”
We use the present continuous tense to describe
activity and this means that we often use
adverbial expressions of place with this tense.
Many adverbial expressions begin with a
preposition.
Si utilizza il presente continuo per descrivere
attività e, pertanto, vengono spesso impiegate
espressioni avverbiali di luogo.
La maggior parte di queste iniziano con una
preposizione.
- "in France", "on the west coast"
Note the differences in the use of prepositions:
- "in" with names of cities (in Florence, in New
York, in Brighton)
- "in" with parts of a photograph (in the
foreground, in the background)
- "on" with surfaces (on the fourth floor, on the
ground)
- "by" to mean "near" (by a lake, by a river, by
the sea)
- "to" for movement to a place (moving to Rome)
- "around" for general movement (travelling
around Canada)
- “in Francia”, “sulla costa ovest”
Osserva la differenza nell’uso delle preposizioni:
- “in” con nomi di città (a Firenze, a New York,
a Brighton)
- “in” con le parti di una fotografia (in primo
piano, sullo sfondo)
- “on” con le superfici (al quarto piano, a
terra)
- “by” significa “vicino/accanto” (vicino a un

The normal position for all these expressions is at
the end of sentences:

When an adverbial of place is used together with
an adverbial expression of time, we can place the
time adverbial at the beginning of the
sentence:
Quando un’espressione avverbiale di luogo
viene usata insieme a una di tempo, si può
inserire quest’ultima a inizio frase:
- "At the moment we are staying in the South
of France"
- “Adesso stiamo soggiornando nel sud della
Francia”
Otherwise, the time adverbial follows the
adverbial of place:
Diversamente, gli avverbi di tempo seguono gli
avverbi di luogo:
- "We are staying in the South of France at the
moment"
- “Stiamo soggiornando nel sud della Francia
adesso”
