ENGLISH in ITALY TODAY – L’INGLESE nell’ITALIA ODIERNA There are a number of reasons why so many English words now appear so often in our everyday speech and writing here in Italy. Perhaps for ease of explanation or description, or if an Italian equivalent is not available or less precise, for example. What follows is a list of common English words, terms and expressions frequently used in everyday Italian. This compilation is the work of second year students at the Liceo Scientifico/Sportivo ‘E.Fermi’ in Catanzaro Lido, and was created under the supervision of Prof. P.J. Richmond as an integral part of the curriculum dedicated to increasing the students’ crossover knowledge, comprehension and use of English, in those hours dedicated to ‘Potenziamento’. The students who observed and collected the words that feature in this compilation drew on a variety of sources, including Internet, newspapers, magazines and journals, comics, books, advertising material, radio, television and specialist texts. Obviously not all the students claim to use every word that features in this listing; this is a subjective matter according to the individuals’ interests and lifestyle, although their understanding of the sense and meaning of each term in context has improved measurably. The collection features many words that are an integral part of our young people’s vocabulary, but also reflects the wide range of professional fields and special interests that continue to contribute to our changing world and, as a result, to our evolving individual vocabularies. It must, therefore, be considered as a work in progress, to which others will make additional contributions in the future as human knowledge expands. Ci sono vari motivi per spiegare perché così tante parole inglesi appaiano così spesso qui, in Italia, nei nostri discorsi e scritti quotidiani. Forse per facilitarne una spiegazione o una descrizione, o se l’equivalente in Italiano non esiste o è meno preciso, ad esempio. Ciò che segue è un elenco di parole, termini ed espressioni inglesi comuni, usati spesso nel italiano ‘di tutti i giorni’. Questa compilazione è opera degli alunni del secondo anno frequentanti il Liceo Scientifico/Sportivo ‘E.Fermi’ di Catanzaro Lido, ed è stato creato sotto la supervisione del Professore Richmond per farne parte integrale del curricolo dedicato ad aumentare le conoscenze e la comprensione della lingua inglese, applicati anche in campi e materie trasversali, in quelle ore dedicate al ‘Potenziamento’. Gli alunni che hanno osservato e raccolto le parole che appaiano in questa raccolta hanno fatto uso di una varietà di fonti, compresi Internet, quotidiani, riviste e giornali, fumetti, libri, materiali pubblicitari, radio, televisione e testi specializzati. Non tutti gli studenti rivendicano l’utilizzo di ogni parola che appare in questo elenco, ovviamente, in quanto l’utilizzo è soggettivo e dipende dallo stile di vita e gli interessi dell’individuo, sebbene la loro comprensione del senso e significato di ciascun termine nei contesti è migliorato notevolmente. Nella raccolta appaiano molti termini che fanno parte del vocabolario dei nostri giovani, ma riflette anche l’ampia gamma di campi e interessi particolari che continuano a contribuire alle evoluzioni in questo nostro mondo e, di seguito, quindi, all’evolversi del nostro lessico individuale.
