Research Activities
– FAWIS: Flexible Adaptation of Web Information Systems. We propose a
unifying methodology for the automatic adaptation of content delivery in Web
Information Systems. That approach relies on two basic notions: the profile and
the configuration. The profile is used to model a variety of contexts and their
characteristics in a uniform way. The configuration describes, in abstract terms,
how to build the various levels of a Web application (content, navigation and presentation). The automatic adaptation of content delivery is achieved by means
of an original notion of production rule that allows us to specify declaratively how
to build a configuration satisfying the adaptation requirements for a given profile.
The technique of evaluating rules supports partial matchings between contexts
and rule heads. This guarantees that a large variety of contexts, possibly not
fixed in advance, can be taken into account in the adaptation process. For more
details look at http://mais.dia.uniroma3.it/FAWIS/.
– ReverseWeb: Data Reverse Engineering of data intensive Web Applications. Data Reverse Engineering is a rapidly growing field of research to make
possible the evolution towards the Web 2.0. In this scenario, Web content should
be self-descriptive to be automatically interpreted and, possibly, used differently
from their original goal. The majority of documents on the Web are written in
HTML, constituting a huge amount of legacy data. All documents are formatted
for visual purposes only and with different styles due to diverse authorship and
goals of the people writing these documents. This makes the process of retrieval
and integration of Web content difficult to automate. We propose a structured
approach to data reverse engineering of data-intensive HTML Web sites. We
focus on data content and on the way in which such content is structured on the
Web. Our approach exploits a Web site data model to describe abstract structural features of HTML pages. Such model can be profitably used to segment
HTML documents in special blocks (Web entity blocks) grouping semantically
related objects. A framework was developed using methods and tools supporting the identification of structure, function, and meaning of data organized in
Web entity blocks. We demonstrate with this framework the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach over a set of real-life Web sites. For more details look
at http://mais.dia.uniroma3.it/ReverseWeb/.

– Nyaya: Reasoning over Large Semantic Datasets. Semantic Web is gaining increasing interest to fulfill the need of sharing and reusing information. In
this context, RDF has been conceived to provide an easy way to represent any
kind of data and metadata, according to a graph-based, lightweight model and
a straight XML serialization. Although RDF has the advantage of being general and simple, it cannot be used as a storage model as it is, since it can be
easily shown that even simple management operations involve serious performance limitations. Starting from an analysis of the current state of the art for
RDF data management, we present a novel approach for storing, managing
and processing RDF data in an effective and efficient way. The approach is
based on a special organization that is particularly suited for RDF constructs,
but it can be easily extended to other models that relies on RDF, like OWL. We
refer to real world scenarios in which large RDF data repositories need to be
navigated and processed, even if the schema is not known in advance. We
consider complex data management operations, which go beyond simple selections or projections, and involve the navigation of huge portions of data sources.
A tool called Nyaya has been developed to test the feasibility of the approach
over large RDF repositories (datasets of millions of triples). We compare the
performance of the proposed framework with prior solutions and present experimental results supporting its effectiveness and efficiency. For more details look
at http://mais.dia.uniroma3.it/SWIM/.
– Yaanii: Keyword Search over large Semantic dataset. The amount of data
available in the Web, in databases as well as other systems, is constantly increasing as increasing is the number of users that wish to access such data.
Data is available in forms that may not be of easy access for not expert users.
Keyword Search approaches are an effort to abstract from specific data representations, allowing users to retrieve information by providing a few terms
of interest. Many solutions build on dedicated indexing techniques as well as
search algorithms aiming at finding substructures that connect the data elements matching the keywords. We present the development of Yaanii, a tool for
effective Keyword Search over semantic datasets. Yaanii is based on a novel
keyword search paradigm for graph-structured data, focusing in particular on the
RDF data model. We provide a clustering technique that identifies and groups
graph substructures based on template match. A scoring function, IR inspired,
evaluates the relevance of the substructures and of the clusters, and supports
the generation of Top-k solutions during its execution in the first k steps. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. For more details look at
http://mais.dia.uniroma3.it/RDFKeyword/.

– SysRFID: Efficient and Effective RFID Data Management. A supply chain
is an involved system aiming to transfer products and/or services from suppliers to final customers. Information management and process analysis play
pivotal roles to simplify logistics and marketing operations. In particular, the
analysis of supply chain data aggregates is fundamental for knowledge discovering. In the latest few years, automatic identification (AutoID) techniques are
becoming more and more relevant in supply chains. RFID (Radio Frequency
IDentification) is the fastest growing sector of AutoID business. It relies on two
simple kind of devices: (i) RFID tags, which are located on the objects to be
tracked and carry data about them, and (ii) RFID readers, which are able to
automatically retrieve data from tags and send them to central servers. Traditional RFID applications have been focused on replacing bar code technology in
supply chain management and asset tracking. In this framework, the challenging problem is the effective management of the huge amount of data generated
by RFID applications, which can reach in practical cases the order of magnitude of terabytes in a day Therefore, our problem definition can be stated as
follows: in an environment where a large amount of RFID data within a supply chain management is collected, we need an effective storage model and
an access strategy to avoid information loss and to efficiently perform different
and involved multidimensional queries over such data. For more details look at
http://mais.dia.uniroma3.it/SysRFID/.
Research Activities
– SeeVa: A Model based approach to Semantic Web Service Discovery. Semantic Web service discovery has gained more and more attention, leading to
a great number of approaches that try to automate and support sharing and
reuse of available services starting from their semantic annotation. Existing
approaches propose logic-based, non-logic-based or hybrid matching solutions
built on complex models for Semantic Web Service descriptions, thus raising
scalability issues. In this paper we address the semantic Web service discovery
problem according to a model-based perspective. In this project we propose a
metamodel representation of both the Web service descriptions and the associated semantic annotations. Based on this metamodel, we implemented S EE VA,
a framework where effective service discovery is performed by a Datalog engine
that executes flexible matching techniques between a service request and available service advertisements. The metamodel is supported by a storage system
that ensures scalability of the matching process. The feasibility of the framework was tested through experiments on a public dataset of semantic service
descriptions.
– TensorRDF: Answering SPARQL queries via Tensor Calculus. We are witnessing the evolution of the Web from a worldwide information space of linked
documents to a global knowledge base, composed of semantically interconnected resources (to date, 25 billion RDF triples, interlinked by around 395 million RDF links). RDF comes equipped with the SPARQL language for querying
data in RDF format. Using so-called triple patterns as building blocks, SPARQL
queries search for specified patterns in the RDF data. Although many aspects of the challenges faced in large-scale RDF data management have already been studied in the database research community, current approaches
provide centralized hard-coded solutions, with high consumption of resources;
moreover, these exhibit very limited flexibility dealing with queries, at various
levels of granularity and complexity (e.g. so-called non-conjunctive queries that
use SPARQL’s UNION or OPTIONAL). We propose a general model for answering SPARQL queries based on the first principles of linear algebra, in particular on tensorial calculus. Leveraging our abstract algebraic framework, our
technique allows both quick decentralized processing, and centralized massive
analysis. Experimental results show that our approach, utilizing recent linear algebra techniques—tailored to performance and accuracy as required in applied
mathematics and physics fields—can process analysis efficiently, when compared to recent approaches. In particular, we are able to carry out the required
computations even in high memory constrained environments, such as on mobile devices. Moreover, when dealing with massive amounts of data, we are
capable of exploiting recent parallel and distributed technologies, subdividing
our tensor objects into sub-blocks, and processing them independently.
