Location and topology design problems in telecommunication networks Gruppo di Ricerca Operativa Dipartimento di Automatica e Informatica - Politecnico di Torino Resp.: Roberto Tadei [email protected] Several optimization problems arise in telecommunication networks design, where two different kinds of nodes are considered: terminals - origins and destinations of the traffic demands - and concentrators - collecting and routing the traffic. The overall design of minimum cost networks where all the technological features and constraints are satisfied is an optimization problem involving optimization subproblems: defining the number and the position of the concentrators (Concentrator Location Problem); assigning each terminal to one or more concentrators (Assignment Problem); optimizing the topology of inter-concentrators network (Topology Design Problem). We present an overview of the problems and heuristic approaches to solve them. 1
