Follow-up del paziente portatore di trapianto renale
Ha eseguito biopsie renali eco-assistite (ad oggi N° = 287) ed
aspirazione del grasso sottocutaneo peri-ombelicale per la ricerca
di amiloidosi sistemica (ad oggi N° = 106).
Dal 1983 ad oggi responsabile della valutazione con microscopia
ad immunofluorescenza delle biopsie renali esaminate nella Unità
Operativa di cui sopra. Biopsie renali esaminate finora circa
2.100.
Ha sviluppato una tecnica di immunofluorescenza su sezioni
fissate, che è stata descritta in una rivista internazionale di
patologia e che è stata adottata in diversi centri sia italiani che
stranieri.
Dal settembre 2012 ad oggi Direttore del Laboratorio Clinico e di
Ricerca sul Sedimento Urinario dell’U.O. di Nefrologia e Dialisi.
Tale Laboratorio, oltre ad effettuare l’esame del sedimento
urinario di 2° livello per i pazienti dell’Ospedale Maggiore
Policlinico di Milano, è da alcuni anni un punto di riferimento
scientifico nazionale internazionale, che ha richiamato più di 40
“visiting fellows” provenienti dall'Italia e da otto nazioni estere.
Sul sedimento urinario ha pubblicato 54 articoli su riviste
internazionali ed una monografia in lingua inglese, che è giunta
alla terza edizione (la seconda edizione, pubblicata dalla Oxford
University Press, è stata anche tradotta e pubblicata in lingua
turca) e diversi capitoli su trattati intenazionali.
Altre attività professionali
Nel 1997 ha iniziato un programma nefrologico di volontariato
presso l’Ospedale Saint Jean de Dieu di Tanguiéta, Repubblica
del Benin (Africa Occidentale), dove si reca ogni anno per periodi
di due settimane ciascuno. Per tale attività dal 2000 al 2008 ha
fatto parte del Subcomitato per l’Africa del COMGAN
(Committee for the Global Advacement of Nephrology) della
Società Internazionale di Nefrologia (vedi sotto, articoli in riviste
internazionali: voce bibliografica 55; e capitoli in trattati
internazionali: voce bibliografica 5).
Tale attività ha portato a contatti ed interventi in Paesi quali il
Burkina Faso (vedi sotto, articoli in riviste internazionali: voce
bibliografica 71) e Nigeria (vedi sotto, articoli in riviste
internazionali: voce bibliografica 75).
Sulla sua esperienza in Africa ha pubblicato il libro: “Dove 2+2
non fa 4. Diario di un medico in Africa”. San Cesario di Lecce,
Manni, 2014.
Nel periodo 1998-2000 ha fatto parte del comitato internazionale
che ha prodotto le linee guida europee per l’esame delle urine
(vedi sotto, articoli in riviste internazionali: voce bibliografica
48).
Dal 2000 al 2010 responsabile per il sedimento urinario del
programma nazionale di Valutazione Esterna di Qualità (VEQ)
sull’esame delle urine (Urinalysis Performance) promosso dal
Centro di Statistica Medica di Castelfranco Veneto (vedi sotto,
articoli in riviste internazionali: voci bibliografiche 72 e 81).
Esperienze professionali presso Istituti stranieri:
Dal 22 settembre 1986 al 2 febbraio 1987 “research fellow”
presso la “Division of Renal Pathology of Columbia University,
New York, U.S.A.” (Direttore: Prof. Vivette D' Agati).
In questo periodo ha approfondito diversi aspetti della patologia
renale.
Dal 9 gennaio 1995 al 31 marzo 1996 “honorary renal registrar”
pressol la “Renal Unit of Guy's Hospital, London, England”
(Direttore Prof. J. Stewart Cameron). In questo periodo ha
effettuato sia studi sperimentali sulla eritrofagocitosi delle cellule
renali tubulari in cultura (vedi sotto, articoli in riviste
internazionali: voce bibliografica 40) che indagini di microscopia
elettronica (a trasmissione ed a scansione) sui sedimenti urinari
(vedi sotto, articoli in riviste internazionali: voce bibliografica
37).
