The exhibition, which was developed in cooperation with House of Photography / Deichtorhallen Hamburg, presents the wide range of this versatile artist’s works, including early black-and-white and colour photographs, fashion images, painted photographs of nudes, paintings and a number of his sketchbooks. One section of the exhibition is devoted to Saul Leiter’s most recent photographs, which he continues to take on the streets of New York’s East Village. He finds his motifs, such as shop windows, passers-by, cars, signs and – time and again – umbrellas, in the direct vicinity of his apartment in New York, where he has now lived for almost 60 years. The indeterminateness of detail, the blurring of movement and reduced depth of field, the use of shadows or deliberate avoidance of the necessary light, as well as the alienation caused by photographing through windows or as reflections, all combine to create the muted colour vocabulary of a semi-real, semiabstract urban space. These are the works of an as yet almost undiscovered modern master of colour photography. Far from being a feminist criticism on society, these photographs seek to re-define our notion of identity, more specifically the “identity” beyond all identities, the inner and original self within us when first born into this world: the primordial self. As an artist with multiple ethnic, cultural backgrounds and nationalities, the belief in the existence of the inner primordial self is essential to my research on our contemporary identity today.” Diana Lui • available at Galerija Fotografija, Lubiana/Slovenia Margo Ovcharenko © Ellen Kooi Oosterplas-willow, 2012 Fuji Chrystal Archive print, Diasec, Dibond.100x158cm. On the one hand the smaller details both in composition and narrative pulse are characteristic of her work, as is a return to forest and water as scenarios that she always uses as main characters of the narrative. On the other hand, we discover new, uncommon elements in her work like high horizons or nonexistent horizons which enclose the composition and create an atmosphere lost in thought, tense, and claustrophobic. • on show at Camara Oscura Galeria de Arte, Madrid, through February 16 © MARGO OVHARENKO, Untitled, 2012 Fink jet print,60x72cm, Ed. 1 of 5 • on SHOW at RTR Gallery, Paris, through February 2, 2013 6 7 Daniela Ray: Le strade dei Poeti Silenziosi Catherine Ludwig: Russ Ski - Incognito © Catherine Ludwig Untitled, from the series Russ-Ski Incognito, 2011 C-print, 60 x 80 cm, Ed. of 3+2 A.P. Ruiz Cirera’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions and this year he has won the AOP Student Awards as well as the Deutsche Bank Award in Photography. Margarita Teichroeb, from the series Menonos © Jordi Ruiz Cirera The third edition of the Circulation(s) festival, of young european photography organized by the association Fetart.eee This festival presents an overview of the new generation of european photographers and to synergize the european cultural initiatives around the image. It will be in Paris from February 22th to March 31th, 2012. Chaired this year by François Cheval ( Director of Nicéphore Niépce Museum), it will present an exhibition of more than 40 European photographers and many other events www.festival-circulations.com © Patrick Willocq © Susanna Pozzoli 12 The winning image of a Mennonite woman, seated at a kitchen table, is part of Menonos, Ruiz Cirera’s long-term project to document the daily life of a religious community – one which forbids images. Having travelled to South America on two occasions, Ruiz Cirera gradually won the trust of the residents of several colonies located south of Santa Cruz. The Mennonites’ uneasy relationship with the camera is reflected in the winning portrait of M a rg a r i t a Te i c h ro e b, pictured at the home she shares with her mother and sister in the Swift Current Colony in Bolivia. ‘I wanted Margarita to look at the camera, but that was a problem for her, and I guess that’s why she is partially covering her face,’ says Ruiz Cirera. ‘She seems to be afraid of the photographer, unwilling to expose herself to our gaze. Her awkward expression says a lot about the tradition, isolation and lifestyle of this community.’ Ruiz Cirera to ok the portrait in the large, starkly furnished but light-filled room with a digital 35mm Canon 5D mkII, using only available light. ‘Almost all of the houses have tables in front of their windows giving fantastic light to the scene, he says. ‘Sitting in front of the camera was not easy for Margarita, photography is forbidden for Mennonites and having her direct portrait taken was quite difficult so I could only take two frames of her. Even though we were enjoying the situation, Margarita posed with this sor t of awk ward expression.’ Since some Mennonites consider photographs to be a form of graven image, Ruiz Cirera struggled to break down their aversion to the lens. ‘It was a really difficult project,’ he recalls. ‘They were willing to host me in their homes, but they weren’t initially willing to be pictured. In some cases, it is forbidden. I stayed there for a month, living with different families, then returned a year later. That’s when most of my pictures were taken.’ More than 50,000 Mennonites live in Bolivia, descendants of Christian Anabaptists who lef t Germany in the sixteenth century. Famously reclusive, the pacifist sect still speaks Low German and their society prohibits the use of cars and electricity. ‘It’s a very humble existence,’ says Ruiz Cirera. ‘They live as their ancestors did, in small, conservative communities devoted to God and sustained by hard work in the fields. Mennonite society is very patriarchal and gender roles are strict.’ Mennonite settlements have previously been documented by Magnum photojournalis t L arr y Towell, and the renowned photo agency’s pioneering images have b een a profound influence on Ruiz Cirera. His subjects include displaced migrant workers living in refugee camps following the Libyan conflict, and Palestinian children attending the ground-breaking Freedom Theatre in the West Bank. £3,000 Second Prize: Lynne, Brighton by Jennifer Pattison © Jennifer Pattison £2,000 Third Prize: Mark Rylance by Spencer Murphy © Spencer Murphy £1,000 Fourth Prize: The Ventriloquist by Alma Haser © Alma Haser 13 [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] FRéDéRIC DELANGLE Brescia, Italy www.wavephotogallery.com Forthcoming exhibitions: GIORGIO LOTTI through February 7, 2013 TAZIO SECCHIAROLI - editi&inediti March 2 - April 17, 2013 © FRéDéRIC DELANGLE • on show with his NEW SERIE "Microshop" at Maison Européenne de la Photographie through April 7, 2013. In France in the 1980s photography was still virgin territory and this allowed me to get to know the greatest photographers of all time. C.P.: This fall, my agency—Catherine Philippot – Relations Media—will celebrate its 30th anniversary and will include our participation in such international festivals and events as Les Rencontres de Bamako, PhotoEspaña (Madrid), the Moscow Biennale, the Lianzhou Festival (China), the Canton Biennale, Photo Phnom Penh and the Biennale Bénin. I am a consultant for many visual art events in both France and abroad and am also on the exhibition committee of a number of events such as the Moscow Biennale for Chinese photography, working with Jan Larivière in Moscow and Luo Dan at the Galerie Taïss in Paris, and with the “On n’a pas tous les jours 20 ans” (“It’s not everyday that you’re 20”). I also worked on the 40th anniversary of the Rencontres d’Arles in 2009 and was co-art director of PhotoQuai, the biennale of the Musée du Quai Branly in 2007 and commissioner for the US, South America, Russia, China and the Mideast. I am involved in permanent projects as both producer and agent. I offer a range of services because my clients are all different. For example, my agency is involved in communications, strategy and organizing competitions such as Prix Pictet, Les Prix SFR Jeunes Talents and the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie. Z.: Who are your favorite photographers? Anthony Goicolea at La Galerie Particulière, Paris March 14 - April 27, 2013 C.P.: To tell the truth, I don't really have any "favorites", although I admire the work of such master photographers as Mapplethorpe, Avedon, Horst, Alvarez Bravo and Kertesz. But I have a special interest in emerging photography from Southeast Asia, Russia and Africa. I am able to travel extensively to those countries and meet with many young, talented artists who are a tremendous intellectual stimulus. Z.: What advice can you offer to collectors? C. P.: Buy the work s of young photographers, to whom I would suggest to take part in photography festivals that are being held with increasing frequency throughout the world. And they should show their portfolios and take part in the conferences! Z.: How did you get your start in photography? C.P.: I first came into contact with photography thanks to working with Robert Delpire prior to the creation of the Centre National de la Photographie. Now the town is open for public access but residents are not permitted to live in the city because many districts lack running water and sewage. One store, a barber shop, is open on main street but there is nowhere to buy any food or supplies of any kind. Farming is not permitted either. One of the biggest challenges will be to attract employers to return to the town, only a few have. Odaka Village, Minami-Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. "There remains a vast network of nuclear ghost towns in the shadow cast by Fukushima Daiichi’s radioactive fallout, outside the no-entry zone a year and a half after the meltdowns, where residents have begun the Herculean effort of taking back a vast irradiated no-man’s land. But how many residents will want to return?" Farmer in hazmat suit and mask to protect him from radioactive fallout in the soil oversees an ongoing decontamination project. Contaminated soil is packed into large sacks and stored under white tarpolins. On the Tomioka Highway, between Tsushima and Yamakiya, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. 1 1/2 years after the tsunami struck, wide areas that were inside the nuclear no-entry zone until April 2012, had been left untouched. So, there are often reminders of the tsunami and earthquake disaster, like this vending machine that came to rest in a former rice paddy that was fouled has been sea water. Odaka, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. James Whitlow Delano Rice paddy field contaminated with radioactive elements and salt. Because this paddy field in Odaka was inside the nuclear no-entry zone until April 2012, work to drain large sea water ponds, trapped in the former rice fields, only recently began after the town was re-designated. Odaka, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Decontamination work crew on the main highway that links highly radioactive Iitate-mura with Fukushima City and the sea. Residents may return to Iitate-mura but, due to the radioactive fall out from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant, the levels of radiation make it too dangerous to inhabit full time. That said, some residents have apparently returned and refused to leave. Iitate-mura, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Standing on a hot spot, in a garden in front of a Iitate-mura house, on a road that has already been decontaminated. Residents may return to their homes but cannot live in the village due to high levels of radiation. Iitate-mura, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan..R: Elderly man walks down a radiation hot spot riddled, street in Iitate-mura, where he lives, despite the fact that the Japanese government has designated the area as a radiation evacuation zone. It is legal to enter Iitate-mura but residents are not permitted to spend the night in the town, which was irradiated after explosions at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Dan Marcolina: All this iPhoneography excitement is about to come to a crescendo at Macworld/iWorld 2013. I was asked, because of my book/ eBook work, and the many lectures on the topic of iPhoneography, to organize an event that brings together the best shooters, bloggers, educators and advocates. It is through my travels and sites like http://www. pixelsatanexhibition.com, iPhoneart. com and Instagram that I came to choose the 15 speakers. The visitor will learn why iPhoneography is different from traditional photography in three unique ways: organic shooting, processing and sharing. We’ll also talk about how to get unique perspectives and storytelling with street photography, how to combine apps to create artistic images beyond what has ever been possible, and how to share smarter and get noticed in Instagram. This will be the largest assemblage of iPhoneography talent and inspiration to date and will be a celebration of not only a new year but also a new chapter in photographs history, the Mobile Movement. On show also 40 iPads with works from the speakers and other key iPhoneographers from around the world. During the show I will also be releasing a new iPad eBook called Mobile Masters. Z. : Is iPhotonography redefining the art form? D.M.: I believe that we are at the beginning of a historical movement in photography: "the mobile movement". The convergence of: outstanding tech in a camera that is always with you, along with cheap and easy ways to discover apps. The sharing and learning of techniques within the huge social gallery called Instagram/Facebook has allowed many more people to intuitively create with images. With this prolific rise in participation, there is as much naïve bad or cliché images and techniques as early Photoshop but also 10 times as many naïve fresh creative images. The first redefining attribute of iPhoneography is not just about the images you can make, but about the images you can now take. Meaning that every moment is now a Kodak moment. In the past, most people would only carry a camera on special outings. Moreover iPhoneography 35 All images © Dan Marcolina [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] allows an individual to further compose the tone with postprocessing: this brings a new level of editorial or artistic intent to the image.Lots of times, I do not know where an image may go when I shoot it or even why I am shooting it. It is a gut level reaction to the tone of the moment, a juxtaposition of subject matter, or just the lighting that makes me react. Now beyond the traditional rules of photography, like composition, a new dimension of pre-visualizing comes into play when shooting mobile. Z. : What the limits of iphotos are? D.M.: . The types of images that should be left to a "real" camera are images that depend on: detail, like landscape photos or commercial photography; speed and control of shutter, like sports photography or long exposure night photography; lens perspective, like compressed space possible through the use of a big telephoto or Shallow depth of field possible with a fast lens. Z.: Is important for an iPhone photographer to have an education in Photography? D.M.: Many of the things we learn as photographers, like controlling depth of field, exposure and shutter speed are here effects done in post. So a new kind of training is emerging, for example: how to handle the device for shooting effectively; camera replacement apps for shooting; and app workflow ideas for achieving the tone and essence you are after. But of course, most importantly it comes down to vision, taste and restraint rather than camera knows how. So yes, education of what makes a good picture can be important but some people just know without rules when to shoot and what to keep in the frame. Z.: Are there many gadget for the mobile phone cameras? D.M.: There is a huge market of gadgets and add on lenses. I suggest to explore photojojo. com/store. You will find wide angle, telephoto and even a way to adapt your Canon lens for use on an iPhone, along with stabilizersto quickly turn your iPhone photographs into real Polaroid images with The Impossible Instant Lab. 36 [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] Z.: Is the "sharing" important? D.M.: Sharing images on social sites like Instagram can not only reinforce the vision, but it challenges to a higher level by comparing images to others. Photographers learn what people “like” by this mass polling process. On pixelsatanexhibition.com or iphoneart.com explore what is lurking under the surface. Z.: What about your activity? D.M.: My design career started before computers, so I learned the "craft" of design without computer shortcuts. How to think conceptually, how to render typography and at the same time I got to work with many top photographers in art directing editorial, corporate and product shots. All along the way I was shooting lots of personal work for group shows. I shot with many different format film cameras and had my own darkroom. But I fell in love with alternative cameras, mostly Diana's and Polaroid cameras, and as a result I have a collection of over 120 toy and antique cameras. Anything to give the image an ambient interpretive feeling. Over the last 2 years I have found a perfect bridge between my digital design side and traditional alternative photo side, iPhoneography. This new obsession has reinvigorated my love for both photography and visual experimentation, inspiring me to author the critically acclaimed book iPhone Obsessed (Peachpit Press) and 3 iPad iTunes eBooks iObsessed Companion, AppAlchemy and AppAlchemy Pocket. This iPhone Photography series has been endorsed by many of the top iPhoneographers and has been called the "Best iPhotography resource available.” Much like my creative excitement of working with Photoshop 1.0 in 1990, I am experiencing that feeling all over again with taking and editing images on my iPhone. It has brought together all the elements I love; it is the best toy camera ever combined with Photoshop capabilities and now the resolution for excellent printed output. 37 [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] [EXHIBITIONS #January/February 2013] 110 ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE FINALISTS ON SHOW AT ARSENALE, VENICE MARCH 17-31, 2013 The selection of the artworks was been carried out by the jury composed by experts from the contemporary art world as Lina Lazzar from Sotheby's or Sabine Schaschl from Kunsthaus Basel. prizes.
