50 A WINTER AT THE SEASIDE! Out of 76 days, 34 saw rain or bad weather: this is the weather bulletin for the period from 1 May to 15 July 2008, issued by the most important permanent fun fair in northern Italy. If you add all this to the world economic crisis, the European soccer championships, the pessimistic forecasts of our politicians (in this regard, if it always rained it is the government’s fault!), etc., it is clear how this “summer” will be remembered as one of the “coldest” of the last 20 years. The first hints that it wasn’t to be a good season, especially for seaside games arcades, came at the Pentecost. As we know, for Austrians and Germans, this is an important celebration, and is always on a Thursday (my grandfather always reminded me of this), giving the opportunity for a long weekend and the first swim of the season in Lignano, Bibione, Caorle or Jesolo. This year, due to the bad weather and a lack of money, not even the people who owned holiday homes came, in addition to hotel guests. On the other hand, having a small games arcade in a beautiful park for children in the centre of Pompei, the suffocating heat in the same period limited operation to one, two hours in the late evening, given that during the day it was impossible to use any of the attractions. In essence, as environmentalists would say: “the seasons aren’t what they used to be”, just like the old guys in the business say that “earnings aren’t what they used to be”. New releases in the games arcades If we were a “normal” country, the most important games arcades at the seaside would have tested the latest (scarce) releases in video games or prize giving games, thus, for example, Sega Rally 3 , Staker , Barber Cut, Sega Race TV, Wacky Races, Virtua Fighter 5, etc. On the contrary, given that P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E SETTEMBRE 2008 THE EXPERT APPROACH - THE EXPERT APPROACH we are a fourth world country (we are still awaiting approval of the 2008 Photoplay Update, started in September 2007, that is, 10 months ago!) the games are the same as last year and, for many arcades, as 7/8 years ago. It is clear that in these conditions we can only hope for the interest of “children” in Sega Rally 2 DeLuxe or Alpine Sky that, not being available on Playstation, are still exciting simulators, thanks to their movements. As concerns the ticket redemptions, some wonderful games have been released, and with excellent results: Smokin Token Extreme, Hummer Off Road , Red Hot , Raptor Captor Revenge , Sea Wolf , Hollywood Reels , Shooting Change , Big Bass Wheel, etc. Fortunately there is now starting to be some good feeling between Italian distributors and American manufacturers, who are willing and available to make Le novità nelle sale giochi Fossimo un Paese “normale”, le più importanti sale giochi al mare avrebbero testato le ultime (seppur scarse) novità in campo di videogiochi o di giochi con vincita di piccoli premi, quindi, ad esempio, Sega Rally 3, Staker, Barber Cut, Sega Race TV, Wacky Races, Virtua Fighter 5, ecc. Conclusioni Vorrei concludere questo articoletto estivo con due considera- all those software and hardware modifications that Italian players require. This is obviously due to the sales volumes, no longer marginal as they were 3/4 years ago, and the Americans too are starting to understand the importance of the Italian market. Visiting the beaches of Northern Italy, however, we have noted how several managers of important games arcades have not grasped the importance of these new games and the related redemption prizes, which represent the true and only future of our business. I therefore invite all managers of games arcade, FECs, amusement parks, bowling centres, etc., big or small, to carefully consider these new types of machines that, like in the United States, will ensure at least another 10 years of survival, as long as we want to learn a new and difficult business based on commitment and good will, as well as the use of all the tools that modern technology has provided the coin-op industry. New Slot Still little interest in installing the NewSlot machines in seaside arcades. I know that those in the Romagna Region have relatively more of them, however the few arcades in the Veneto Region that host these games with cash wins, that is, aimed at a solely adult public, are organising themselves into sorts of mini-casinos for smokers, complete with vending machines and other comforts for the players. In these arcades there is no trace of paragraph 6a machines: there are many reasons for this, first off all the games must be well known, and “seaside” NewSlot players are instead those who play 3-4 games and then leave… so they don’t have time to learn the characteristics and features of the various games. In general, the lack of interest in NewSlot machines among managers of games arcades located in tourist-seaside areas is also due to how easy these places are to steal from. In fact, having to provide maximum P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E SETTEMBRE 2008 THE EXPERT APPROACH - ASCOLTANDO L’ESPERTO access to the public, they are hard to protect against theft (the operators in Jesolo are well aware of this). Therefore, adding to the various cons of an ethical nature, the NewSlot market, at least in games arcades in Italy’s northeast, is still quite small. Conclusions I would like to conclude this summer article with two considerations: 1) The first has nothing to do with the trends at seaside games arcades, but rather came to my mind when reading the “Famiglia Cristiana” magazine on a rainy weekend stuck inside a house at the seaside. In an article that spoke about the Pope’s visit to Australia, a report published in 2007 by the UN on human development was shown, in which Australia is listed as third in the world by annual percapita income at 37,705 dollars. Italy is twentieth with an average income per head of 31,456 dol- Un Mini-Casinò a Lignano (Ud). The art of preparing the showcases with the prizes for ticket redemption games. This was data I have been looking for since 1996, when for the first time I studied the principle of the “average hourly loss” for machines with cash wins. This data, translated into euro, gives 20,970. Considering an annual average of 2040 working hours, it gives an average monthly income of 1747 euro (1613 considering the endof-year bonus), and an hourly income per head in Italy of 10.30 euro. The principle the games with cash wins are based on in some European countries (Germany and Belgium, for example) is that “a player cannot, on average, lose more than they earn in an hour”. Let’s assume that those who play the NewSlot machines are not pensioners on 500 euro a month, not metalworkers on _ 1200, but rather the small/medium businessperson with an income 4-5 times higher than the average. It can thus be reasonably believed that machines with “an average hourly loss” of 40-50 euro are perfectly in line with this principle, therefore can be considered “amusement” games with cash wins. If however this limit is “greatly” exceeded, I would have serious doubts about the concept of “amusement”. Yet I will leave it to posterity (that is, the studies of various trade associations) to issue sentence. 2) The second consideration, on the other hand, brings us back to today’s topic: it came to me when reading a sign affixed above the reception desk in a Jesolo hotel, whose friendly owner, Mr. Bepi, gladly translated for me from the original, in “Friulian” language: 2008, leap year, no head no sense. Let’s hope then that this 2008 ends as soon as possible and we quickly get to 2009, hoping that we don’t have to wait 60 days again to have two sunny weekends, or years to receive approval for a video game! q 2008: anno bisestile senza testa e senza giudizio.
