MACROCOSMI – PATTERNS OF AN OTHER ORDER
This project of a dialogue between Bologna and Berlin includes not only common presentations of
galleries in both cities but also two pioneering exhibitions. In the Old Postfuhramt West and in the
Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben works by over 50 artists of all media and generations meet in answering
the question about other or new modes of expression in contrast to conventional forms, perceptions
and ways of thinking.
The project initiated by Pascual Jordan and curated in collaboration with Petra Dregger takes place
this year for the first time and is applied on continuation, with exhibitions in spring in Italy and in
Germany in September. The association of Berlin galleries (LVBG), Galerie di Bologna, the art
center CUBO Centro Unipol Bologna and the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna co-operate in this
project. The patronage for the project under the umbrella of Foundation “Forum of Cultures of
questions of our time” have been adopted by the German Embassy in Rome and the Italian Embassy
in Berlin. "MACROCOSMI" is a partner of the art fair POSITIONS BERLIN 2015.
5 students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna (Bianca Schroeder, Francesca Susca, Arianna
Battistella / Noemi Diamantini and Tiziana De Felice) under the organization and direction of Prof.
Eleonora Frattarolo were selected from the participants of the video workshop of Branka Pavlović
in January, to present their videos in Berlin.
Curatorial Statement:
Systems of other kinds can be manifested in many different ways, in formal and thematic aspects,
sociological, philosophical or conceptual. They come in nature, in physics, in biology and touching
gender issues, social systems and other ways of life. The orders of another kind are not necessarily
new, but different, ie Forms of networking and organization are not hierarchical or linear, the screen
layout is not a central perspective, the results are not quantifiable or reconstructed.
In their exploration of unsuspected realities, of transitions from the representational to the unknown
and the invisible in the visible, some works are in the tradition of André Breton's Surrealism and its
opening of the traditional expression and concentrates on the imaginary, dreamlike, visionaries.
Other works are reminiscent again of movements such as the "arte povera" or "Ambiente come
sociale", expressed in the full range of our present means and media.
So the orders of another kind can manifest in insights into other life forms like Boris Mikhailov and
Benyamin Reich, dark sides in confusing beautiful, almost painterly photographs made by Pierre
Jouve or of solitude, obscure obsessions and existential absurdities told by the video and
photographic works of Alexandra Ranner. Other orders are clearly visible in Mary Bauermeister
Structural Tachism or in the work of Mike Steiner, both have tryed out new ways which proved to
be visionary. Or they show up in large scale structures when Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein and
Rudolf zur Lippe reveal us the soothing power of large gestures in the smartphone era while Erik
Andersen, Jofroi Amaral and Saâdane Afif play in their works with our habits of perception.
All works open up to new perspectives, they can serve as an inspiration and as an excitation for
(self-) reflection. And all of them throw us ultimately back to the great questions of human
existence, to which Gwenneth Boelens in her auratic work finds very personal and at the same time
possible general answers.
Is it time to consider a new surrealism in its most radical claim? Is poetry the real revolution?
