ENGLISH Video 1 transcript TH: You were saying something had happened at the week-end that really upset you – made you feel quite angry ITALIAN Video 1 trascritto T: Quello che è successo nella settimana- che davvero ti ha sconvolto – che ti ha fatto sentire abbastanza arrabbiato J: Yeah, you know, these things are always happening. But, yeah, at the weekend I was out with some mates of mine and we went up to Hampstead Heath, and we were just having a drink up there, sitting around, you know it was relatively not a bad day actually hanging out with my mates, I was just trying to get on with my own thing and then this guy just walked past and he just spat, just spat, and it nearly hit my shoe, just spat near my shoe, and you know it‟s just the same thing, just makes me really angry J: si, queste cose succedono sempre. TH: What did you make of it when he spat, what did you think, what went through your mind T: come hai interpretato il fatto che ha sputato, cos‟hai pensato, cosa ti è passato per la testa J: Well, you know what goes on, everyone knows, everyone knows what I‟ve done, you know every one has a go, calling me a nonce and stuff and people know and he had obviously heard from someone and people think they know me, people think they know what‟s happened, they don‟t…no-one likes people that have hurt children J: beh tu sai cosa succede, tutti lo sanno, tutti sanno cosa ho fatto, tu lo sai ognuno lo sa, e le cose e le persone sanno e lui ha avuto sicuramente notizia da qualcuno e le persone pensano che loro mi conoscono, le persone pensano che sanno cos‟è successo, loro non..…no- sacco che sono la stessa persona che ha fatto male ai bambini TH: So it just fitted in for you with stuff that‟s gone before, it fitted in with people knowing about what‟s happened, knowing about your history TH: ha coinciso con le cose che sono successe prima, ha coinciso con persone che sapevano cos‟era successo, che sapevano la tua storia J: Well people do yeah, and I have to live with that, people don‟t like people that have hurt children, do they, so yes, I have to live with that kind of thing all the time just getting out and about and trying to have a normal day and then someone comes and does something like that J: bene le persone lo sanno, e io devo vivere con questo, alle persone non piacciono quelle che fanno del male ai bambini, lo fanno, cosi si, devo vivere con questo tipo di cose tutto il tempo cercando di gestirle e cercando di avere una giornata normale e poi qualcuno arriva and e fa qualcosa di simile 1 TH: Yeah. And it makes you feel really angry because it must have taken quite a bit to get out, because I know sometimes you find it hard to get out don‟t you? TH: Ok, devi sentirti veramente arrabbiato perchè deve essere stato abbastanza difficile per te gestire tutto, perchè l‟hai trovato difficile no? J: Yeah, well I don‟t go out because things like that happen J: già, non gestisco le cose che succedono TH: Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. So you‟d got out, it must have taken a huge effort, and you were there having an all right day and then something like that happened and it really upset you TH: certo, certo, assolutamente. Avresti potuto gestirle ma sarebbe stato uno sforzo enorme, e tu stavi avendo un ottima giornata e poi qualcosa come quello e' successo ti ha davvero fatto arrabbiare J: Yeah J: già TH: And you kind of took it for granted that was at you and it must have been about you TH: e tu l hai interpretata con la sicurezza che quella cosa fosse contro di te e che doveva per forza riguardare te. J: Well, it was yeah J: già, lo è stato si TH: Yeah, yeah. And is there any possibility in your mind that it might not have been, that there might have been another reason why he was spitting? J: That what might not have been ? J: che cosa non dovrebbe essere stato ? TH: That the spitting might not have been about you TH: che lo sputo forse non era diretto a te J: Spitting might….I don‟t know. I mean…I don‟t think so, but maybe…maybe…maybe the way I look, a bit scarred, maybe, I don‟t know, maybe people don‟t like that, I don‟t know, but I don‟t think so J: poteva sputare….non lo so. cioè…non credo, ma forse…forse…forse il modo in cui io guardo, un po‟ spaventato, forse, non so, forse alla gente non piace questo, non lo so, ma non credo TH: So you thought…there‟s a possibility in your mind that it might not have been about the past, but it might be something to do with the way you look TH: quindi tu hai pensato…c‟è una possibilità nella tua testa che possa essere accaduto per il tuo passato, ma potrebbe essere qualcosa nel modo in cui tu guardi… 2 J: No, I didn‟t say that. I mean, I….(sighs)…. I don‟t think I want to do this anymore. TH: Right… TH: giusto… J: I mean, you are kind of saying that…saying I‟m wrong really J: Cioè, stai dicendo delle cose che…dicendo che sono davvero aren‟t you, which is what everyone here says so I don‟t really see the sbagliato, che questo è quello che ognuno qui dice così io non posso point really anymore veramente vedere il punto di vista di ognuno TH: Right. Oh, I‟m sorry – I didn‟t mean to…I didn‟t mean to make you feel upset with what we‟re talking about TH: Giusto. Oh, mi spiace – Io non volevo …non volevo farti sentire arrabbiato con quello che dico J: Well, I‟m sure you didn‟t but it does you‟re kind of saying I‟m wrong aren‟t you and that‟s what everyone in here thinks – that‟s why they just stick me on medication tell me shut up and be a good boy and go away. TH: Mmm. TH: Mmm. J: Doesn‟t make any difference, I have to go out and live with that stuff J: non fa nessuna differenza,io devo uscire e vivere con queste cose TH: And that‟s something that‟s happened to you a lot – you‟ve felt that people don‟t believe what you‟re saying, think you are wrong, disagree with you TH: e questo è solo qualcosa del tanto che ti è successo – devi aver sentito che le persone non credevano a quello che dicevi, che pensavi sbagliato, ed erano in disaccordo con te J: Yeah. That‟s all I get from people here. Paranoid they call it, making it up J: Già. Questo ho preso dalle persone qui. La chiamano paranoia.. TH: come ti ha fatto sentire questo? TH: How does that make you feel J: Makes me feel like this – angry J: questo mi ha fatto sentire – arrabbiato TH: Yeah, yeah….I mean…. TH: si si…lo immagino… 3 J: So maybe, we shouldn‟t – if that‟s where you‟re coming from then J: cosi forse, noi non potremmo – se questo è quello da dove noi stiamo I don‟t see the point venendo non vedo il punto TH: So it‟s not helpful, it sounds like you‟re saying, to think about different explanations. For you there‟s that explanation and that‟s what it‟s about and that‟s it. J: Yep. J: si. TH: There‟s no thought in your mind at the moment of alternatives to it, and it just makes you angry if people talk about it in that way. Is that right? It makes you feel like you‟re not being believed, people are saying you‟re wrong TH: non c‟è modo nella tua mente di pensare alle alternative adesso, e puoi sentirti arrabbiato se le persone parlano di te in questo modo. È corretto? Puoi sentirti come non creduto, come se le persone dicessero che stai sbagliando J: Yeah, that‟s pretty much it. I mean – you can imagine - how would you like it if people told you you were wrong about stuff J: si, questo è abbastanza bello. Sure, sure. And so the key thing really is that it‟s happening, that it‟s upsetting TH: già. Sicuro, sicuro. That it makes it hard for you to get out and about, yeah? J: Yeah, well you know, it‟s my life I live with it J: si, beh lo sai, è la mia vita vivere cosi TH: Absolutely, yeah, and you kind of, yeah, you kind of put up with it, really, don‟t you, you sort of struggle through. But it‟s hard for you, it‟s really horrible. J: It is. It really is. Like at the weekend, just, you never get away from it, you never do. 4 TH: Mmm TH: Mmm J: But sometimes it maybe goes to the back of your mind a bit but then something will happen and it brings it all… TH: yeah, so it fluctuates – sometimes it‟s sort of a bit quiescent, it‟s not quite so much there, sometimes you‟ll go out, something will happen and it‟s right there at the front again and it‟s really upsetting TH: si è fluttuante – a volte è un pò una sorta di tranquillità, non è così tranquillo qui, a volte andrai fuori, qualcosa succederà, giusto qui ancora di fronte, ed è veramente irritante J: Yeah, it brings it back when something happens for sure - you just want to go home and hide away from it all J: già, ti porta indietro quando succede qualcosa di sicuro – tu vuoi giusto andare a casa e nasconderti lontano da tutto TH: And I guess that gets you feeling a bit stuck – like you‟ve said you don‟t want to go out because of the risk of it happening TH: e posso immaginare che tu ti senta un pò bloccato – come hai detto – non vuoi uscire per il rischio di quello che può succedere J: Yeah. It‟s only sooner or later until someone beats me up or attacks me for it J: si, solo più presto o più tardi finchè qualcuno mi picchia o mi attacca per questo TH: So yeah, you‟re worried some really serious things might happen because of it TH: si è così, sei preoccupato che qualcosa possa succederti realmente J: Yeah, they have in the past J: si, lo hanno fatto in passato TH: So it must take loads to get out under those circumstances – must take a lot of courage TH: devi assumerti il rischio di uscire anche in queste circostanze – devi prendere molto coraggio J: What can you do, you know. What‟s the choice – you stay in – or you don‟t J: cosa puoi fare, lo sai. Che scelta c‟è – stai li – o no TH: But sounds like you‟d kind of, you‟d like to be able to get out more and have sort of more of a life if this wasn‟t happening TH: ma sembra una sorta di, dovresti essere in grado di uscire di più e avere una possibilità che queste cose non succedano nella vita J: Well, I wish this wasn‟t happening, and then I‟d have more of a life J: beh spero che non stia succedendo, e poi devo avere più di una vita 5 TH: Yeah. Is that something we could look at together – because it‟s quite a….you‟re quite stuck aren‟t you in a way, with that, you know, the kind of wanting to do more stuff but not being able to because of what‟s happening TH: ok. Well, yeah, that‟s what I thought this would be about – trying to – I don‟t know - cope somehow, not about whether I‟m right or not J: già…beh, si, questo è quello che ho pensato, questo sarebbe – cercando – non so – affrontare in qualche modo, non se io sono ok o no… TH: Yeah, that‟s just feels really kind of unhelpful TH: ok, questo è quello che senti veramente utile J: Yeah, because I know I‟m right J: si perchè lo so, è giusto TH: So thinking about dealing with it is kind of more the way to go for you TH: pensando alla relazione con questo è una sorta di modo in più di uscire per te J: Well, yeah, like I say, I thought that was what this was all about – ways of – whatever – I can‟t really think of any, but… TH: And that‟s what you‟ve been doing yourself for all these years TH: questo è quello che stai facendo per tutti questi anni J: Trying to, yeah. J: cercando si. TH: Yeah, so ways of trying to build that up. ************************************************* Video 2 transcript TH: si, modi per cercare di ragionarci su. ***********************************************+ Video 2 trascritto TH: Hi John, how are things this week – we talked last week and you‟d had a really rough time TH: ciao John, come sono andate le cose questa settimana – abbiamo parlato la scorsa settimana e hai avuto davvero un momento difficile J: Yeah, I‟d had that thing with red dots on the wall in my bedroom. I don‟t know – it scared the hell out of me for sure – because it could well have been a gun – I‟m not sure – I don‟t know what to think really. I know at the time I was really sure it was one of the guns – J: si io ho avuto queste cose con I puntini rossi sul muro della mia stanza. Non so – ha lasciato il segno l‟inferno fuori di me sicuro– perchè avrei potuto avere una pistola – non sono sicuro – non so cosa pensare veramente. Ero sicuro in quel momento che erano delle pistole – sai 6 you know with those laser pointer things on but then in the week I was talking to someone who had said that people have pens that do things like that for showing things up in lectures or whatever and…I don‟t know, I don‟t know whether it was a gun or a pen or… quelle con I puntini laser, ma poi nella settimana stavo parlando a qualcuno che diceva che le persone hanno penne che fanno cose come queste per disegnare cose o simile e…non so, non so se era una pistola o una penna…. TH: So at the time, as you said last week, it was terrifying – you were sure you were about to be attacked, but now you‟ve been reviewing it and thinking about it – seems a bit confusing TH: ora, come hai detto la scorsa settimana, è stato terrificante eri sicuro di essere stato attaccato, ma adesso se guardiamo indietro a questo e ci pensiamo – sembri un po‟ confuso J: Yeah, I mean I know… what I‟ve done and that, I know what people think – but to be assassinated….I‟m not…I don‟t know J: si, cioè so…… cosa ho fatto, so cosa le persone pensano – ma essere assassinato….io no…non so TH: Right, so that seems a bit over the top to you TH: si, sembra un pò che vada oltre a te questa cosa J: Yeah J: già TH: Yeah, yeah. OK, so, that‟s really good because it sounds like this week you‟ve come to quite a different position about it and… J: Yeah, I mean, I‟m not sure, it‟s confusing, I‟m not sure, but… TH: Sure, what‟s helped this week do you think, because it sounds like whatever you‟ve done might have been helpful because you‟re in a better place now than you were a week ago TH: sicuro, questo ti ha aiutato a pensare in questa settimana, è come se qualcosa che hai fatto potesse esserti di aiuto perchè sei in un posto migliore ora rispetto ad una settimana fa J: Yeah, yeah. I‟m still not sure about it. I suppose…well, just seeing that friend and talking about it and him saying about that those red pens exist and, and being out I think. The next morning after the gun thing I had to go and get my social money - I can‟t survive without that – so I had to go out and once I‟d gone out it was easier to go out again J: si, si... non sono ancora sicuro su questo. suppongo…beh, solo guardando quell‟amico e parlando con lui e e dicendogli che queste penne rosse esistono e, e stando fuori, penso. Right, and when you went out what did you do. Did you do anything to check things out or… TH: bene e quando sei uscito cos‟hai fatto.. hai controllato qualcosa fuori o… 7 J:Yeah, well I was scared you know, I was confused but I was scared J:si, beh io ero sfregiato lo sai, ero confuse ma sfregiato e ho pensato and I thought someone might be trying to kill me and so I certainly che qualcuno stesse pensando di uccidermi cosi certamente farò was paying attention when I went out, certainly looking around attenzione quando uscirò, mi guarderò attorno e… and… TH: What were you looking for TH: cosa cercherai J: Well, I look at people‟s eyes J: guarderò le persone negli occhi TH: Yeah TH: ok J: I‟ve always done that since I was in prison anyway, I‟ve always … I look at people‟s eyes and I can just tell, I can just tell if they know me and if they are judging me, and you know J: lo facevo sempre da quando ero in prigione, lo facevo sempre … guardo gli occhi delle persone e posso dire, posso dire se mi conoscono e se mi giudicano, e così… TH: So we‟ve talked about this before haven‟t we because you‟ve been so worried after your experiences in prison that it‟s been really important for you to check out how you think people might be thinking about you and treating you. So your experience is that can check people by looking at their eyes, and what do you see if you see something in their eyes TH: abbiamo parlato di questo prima perchè tu eri cosi spaventato delle tue esperienze in prigione che è stato veramente importante per te scoprire come le persone pensavano su di te e come ti trattavano . la tua esperienza è che puoi controllare le persone dal loro modo di guardare, e cosa vedi se vedi qualcosa nei loro occhi J: Just whether they seem to recognise me or not if they look at me and there‟s a kind of a knowing look - they look at me – and they seem to recognise me, then they must know me and they know what I‟ve done and they hate me for it J: loro mi riconoscono o no se mi guardano e c‟è una sorta di conoscenza nello sguardo – mi guardano – e sembrano riconoscermi, poi loro sanno di me e sanno cosa ho fatto e e mi odiano per questo TH: Right TH: corretto J: And if they don‟t, if they just sort of look away, then they don‟t know me and that‟s all right J: e se loro non lo fanno, se vanno oltre e guardano lontano, non sanno di me e questo è buono TH: Right. And does that in some way relate to the way people TH: giusto. E questo è in qualche modo collegato al modo in cui le 8 looked at you when you were in prison, or… persone ti guardavano quando eri in prigione o… J: Yeah, it certainly started there. You would try to not look at people and if you did – sometimes you can‟t help it – then, back then I could tell, I could see, whether people knew what I‟d done, because people in prison they - that‟s the first thing they want to know about someone - what they‟ve done. You don‟t want everyone to know, but it gets out. You can just tell by the way people look at you whether they know what you‟ve done. TH: So kind of in prison and really almost from then onwards you would be wanting to try and avoid people - direct eye contact – your experience would be if people are looking at you then that‟s probably hostile TH: cose del genere capitano in prigione e sicuramente da questo punto in avanti tu vorresti provare a fuggire dalle persone - dal contatto visivo diretto - sarebbe la tua esperienza nel caso le persone ti guardassero probabilmente poi ti apparirebbero ostili J: Yeah J: si TH: And you had some really direct experiences of that in prison TH: e hai avuto esperienze dirette di questo in prigione J: Well, that‟s right – I mean you now what I went to prison for and people don‟t like people who have hurt children. There was even one guy who came up to me and he was like „oh, I raped two women but that‟s not as bad as what you‟ve done - what do you think of that‟, you know. Non è facile per me da dire TH: Right TH: certo J: Just keep out of these things – but you know… J: tenere fuori queste cose – ma tu sai.… TH: So you tried to avoid getting into this kind of conflict but it still didn‟t protect you always TH: hai cercato di evitare questi conflitti ma non ti senti ancora protetto J: No, no. I‟ve got attacked – got my nose smashed up – always be getting some kind of violence J: No, no..sono stato attaccato – ho preso un pungo al naso – ho avuto ogni sorta di violenza 9 TH: Yeah. So with those really bad things happening that‟s led - that led then and perhaps even now to that sense that you can‟t really trust anybody – that somebody could always be wanting to harm you TH: già... queste sono le cose che ti sono realmente successe – che ti hanno portato poi e forse anche adesso al non fidarti veramente di nessuno – che qualcuno potrebbe sempre farti del male J: Well, that‟s right and they are – I mean, word gets out in my community people call me things. You know what it‟s like in the papers and that. People do want to hurt you. Le persone vogliono farti del male" TH: And then that leads you to – both when something happens like those red dots that you talked about - to think, you know, that‟s somebody wanting to attack you, and…but it also leads to something else which is quite important which is you staying in and trying to protect yourself TH: e poi questo ti ha portato a – quando succedono queste cose – come I puntini rossi di cui mi hai parlato – a pensare, no, che qualcuno ti voglia far del male, e…ma altrettanto importante è dirlo e cercare di proteggerti J: Yeah, well, that‟s what I‟ve learnt I guess J: si questo è quello che ho imparato credo TH: So you‟ve learned to protect yourself and stay in, stay out of trouble, which was a good – quite a good strategy in prison really wasn‟t it - but now, now you‟re no longer in prison, these years on, there‟s two things going on here aren‟t there – there‟s the fact that you‟ve learnt not to trust and to fear attack and that‟s a constant state that you could – that you are in – especially when you are out - to be looking around and checking how people are looking at you – and you‟ve also learnt that quite often its best to stay in, or even when you‟re out, to try and avoid eye contact, avoid getting in to things with people – to sort of protect yourself TH: hai imparato a proteggerti e stare qui, stare lontano dai guai, che è buono – una buona strategia che in prigione non era – ma ora, non sei più in prigione, ci sono due cose che fai qui e non là – c‟è il fatto che hai imparato a non fidarti e aver paura di essere attaccato e che è uno stato costante quello in cui tu potresti – specialmente quando sei fuori – guardarti attorno e controllare come le persone ti guardano – e hai anche imparato che abbastanza spesso è meglio starci, o anche quando sei fuori, cercare di evitare il contatto con gli occhi, evitare di “incasinarti” con le persone – come per proteggere te stesso J: Yeah – well that‟s right – that‟s how I live and I feel I‟ve got to – I‟ve got attacked once by my neighbour a few years ago and J: si – ok è giusto – questo è come vivo e come mi sento – sono stato attaccato dal mio vicino un po‟ di anni fa e… TH: Yeah, yeah. Can I just jump in here because I think that‟s right, but there‟s also something really important that we talked about a little while back which is that it was when you went out last week to get your social money that you discovered that there didn‟t seem to TH: si, si... possiamo saltarlo perchè so che è giusto, ci sono alter cose importanti di cui vorrei discutere su quando sei uscito la scorsa settimana a prendere il tuo benefit, che hai scoperto che sembrava non esserci nessuno che girava li attorno, aspettando di ucciderti. Che ne 10 be anybody hanging around, waiting to kill you. What do you think of that? pensi? J: Well, yeah. That‟s right – that‟s one of the things where I‟m now kind of confused about whether it was a gun or not, it might have been – I didn‟t know those pens existed when it happened, but now I do and … I don‟t know – I can see it might not have been a gun, but um… J: beh, si. Vero – questa è una delle cose su cui ora mi sento confuso se era una pistola o no, potrebbe esserlo stato – non sapevo che queste penne esistessero quando è successo, ma ora lo so e … non so– posso vedere che forse non è stata una pistola ma…mmmm… TH: So that allowed you to test it out, didn‟t it, and allowed you to discover that maybe on that occasion – we‟re not talking about all occasions – we‟re not saying that you could – that you‟re always safe or never be attacked, but that on some occasions when you feel very threatened there may be some sort of other way of looking at it – like it might be a pen not a gun, and by not avoiding the possibility of threat you might actually discover that things are OK TH: questo ti dimostra che forse hai potuto scoprire in quell‟occasione– non parliamo di tutte le occasioni – non stiamo dicendo che potresti – essere sempre al sicuro e mai verrai attaccato, ma che in una di queste occasioni quando tu ti senti minacciato ci può essere una sorta di altro modo di guardarle – una penna e non una pistola, e non evitare la possibilità che potresti essere minacciato, ma accettandolo J: Yeah J: si TH: Does that make sense? TH: ha un senso? J: It does, yeah. I mean, it‟s a dangerous game of course because, you know, it‟s…the things I‟m confused about are things that…where my life might be in danger J: ce l‟ha si. cioè, è un gioco pericoloso senza dubbio, si, è…le cose su cui sono confuso…dove la mia vita potrebbe essere in pericolo TH: So it‟s something to take very gently isn‟t it TH: è qualcosa da prendere molto con le pinze no? J: But, yeah - I see what you‟re saying – that things that happened after gave me another way of looking at it. But, um…yeah. J: ma si… - vedo cosa stai dicendo – che le cose che mi sono successe posso guardarle in un altro modo ma…mmm…si…. TH: Yeah, and kind of what we‟re saying is that it really makes sense that the fact that you had all hose experiences in prison and after you came out of prison, and that people have been threatening to you and hostile, and you have been attacked, that I can really TH: ok, circa quello che stiamo dicendo è che ha veramente un senso il fatto che tu abbia avuto tutte queste esperienze in prigione e dopo che sei uscito di prigione, e che le persone ti hanno minacciato e sono state ostili con te, e sei stato attaccato, posso veramente capire perchè hai 11 understand why you‟re on the look out for attack now and alongside that though, there‟s the possibility, as you‟ve described really well with that fear about being shot, that you could be inclined to treat every situation as a possible life threatening attack. Does that make sense? paura di essere attaccato ora e nei tuoi pensieri, c‟è questa possibilità, che hai ben descritto come la paura di essere colpito, che potresti essere incline ad essere minacciato in ogni momento della tua vita. Ha un senso per te questo? J: Yeah – well, looking back it might not have been a gun – although at the time I was sure it was a gun so I can see that maybe I might …jump to conclusions a bit sometimes but at the time it‟s so scary and so… J: si – guardando indietro potrebbe non essere stata una pistola – in qualche momento nel tempo ero sicuro che era una pistola ero sicuro che era una pistola ma ora posso vedere che forse …salto alle conclusioni un po‟ alle volte ma sono spaventato e…. TH: Absolutely, yeah, yeah TH: assolutamente si…. J: So you‟re just scared and you just want to… J: sei segnato e vuoi…… TH: Sure. And when you‟re scared that will really increase the chances that you‟ll think, you know, it is a gun, I think, if you‟re feeling really churned up and scared, then that‟s going to happen. So perhaps maybe one of the things we could work on is predicting those situations and thinking about how you might cope now, now that you‟ve got this understanding of yourself, about, you know, if there‟s a situation where you do feel sort of under threat, are there ways that might help in the situation as well as afterwards. Does that make sense? TH: sicuro... e quando sei segnato realmente incrementi le possibilità di pensare è una pistola, penso che se veramente sei segnato, poi succede questo. Così forse lavoreremo su una di una di queste cose predicendo queste situazioni e pensando a come affrontarle, ora che hai capito queste cose di te, sulle situazioni in cui ti senti minacciato, ci sono modi che possono aiutarti in queste situazioni in seguito. Ha un senso questo? J: Yeah, I mean it does. I mean again, like I say, it‟s dangerous game and there‟s always a chance that someone might well be out to hurt me, but I can see that when these things happen they‟re hard to get out of like that – last week when that happened J: si, ce l‟ha. Cioè ancora, come dico, è un gioco pericoloso e ci sono sempre possibilità che qualcuno mi faccia male, ma posso vedere che quando questo succede è difficile uscirne – per esempio la scorsa settimana quando è successo TH: Yeah, yeah TH: si, si J: I was just up all night, scared out of my wits and I don‟t see how I could‟ve got out of that J: ci sono stato su tutta la notte, pensandoci e non sapendo come venirne fuori 12 TH: No, no. Well, that‟s something I think that would be really good for us to think about. But also to reflect that you did find, you know, a way out the next morning, and have felt better about it since, so that‟s a positive step, isn‟t it? TH: No, no. c‟è qualcosa che penso potrebbe essere buono per noi da usare. Ma anche riflettere su ciò che è stato trovato, come uscire domain mattina, e sentirsi meglio, è un passo positivo no? J: Yeah, yeah – it was kind of lucky I needed to go out J: si, si – è una sorta di fortuna aver bisogno di uscire TH: Yeah, it is isn‟t it TH: si, si lo è J: That I had to go out, otherwise, I wouldn‟t have gone out J: che devo uscire, inoltre, anche se non volessi TH: That‟s maybe another thing to be thinking about then for the future. TH: potrebbe essere un‟altra cosa su cui pensare per il futuro. *********************************** Video transcript 3 – Working with voices and self esteem ************************************************* Video trascritto 3 – Lavorare con le voci e con l’autostima TH: You‟ve told me a lot about yourself, John, and how stuff‟s going and things have been going really well. TH: mi hai detto molto su di te, John, su come le cose stanno andando e su come le cose andranno. J: Yes, it‟s good. J: si, questo è buono. TH: You‟ve been dealing with a lot of things, and quite a lot of it‟s been going better. I was just wondering if it would be useful to look again at how you feel about yourself now and what that means about what Rags says, what the voice says when it comes on, because I think sometimes people find it helpful to have a look at how that relates to who you are now and what you think about yourself now and whether that‟s different or whether that‟s got a bit of similarity. How would you describe how you are now, who you are now and what are your good points – you feel all right about yourself now you were saying? 13 J: Yeah, yeah, generally I do. I mean, I get down sometimes, like anyone does, but, generally, yeah, better about myself, than I used to. I used to hate myself. J: si si in genere lo faccio. Cioè a volte vado giù di morale, come tutti, ma, di solito, si, meglio su di me, del solito. Di solito odiavo me stesso. TH: You were talking at one stage about how you thought you needed punishing and were useless and various things and you seemed to deal with that – and you‟ve been quite interesting about how you managed to make yourself feel better about that. Is that right – you feel better than you did? TH: stavi parlando, a un certo punto, del fatto che avevi bisogno di una punizione, di essere stato inutile, e di varie cose e sembravi occuparti di questo - e sei stato abbastanza interessato a capire come potevi sentirti meglio riguardo a questo. E' vero, ti senti meglio rispetto a prima? J: Yeah, I do. I guess what I was saying before is that I feel like I‟ve kind of paid my dues now. I‟ve done a lot of punishing of myself, done a lot of cutting myself, of drinking, taking drugs, and all that… J: si... cioè quello che stavo dicendo prima è che mi sento come se avessi dolore adesso. Mi sono fatto molto male, mi sono tagliato spesso, ho bevuto ho preso droghe e tanto altro… TH:I know TH:lo so… J: And I‟m glad I‟ve done that because I feel like I‟ve kind of - I needed to do that. And sometimes I still feel like I need to – I suppose, sometimes. But I‟m not going to do that anymore. I‟m kind of grown up from that really. J:e sono contento di averlo fatto perchè mi sento come in una sorta di – avevo bisogno di farlo. E a volte mi sento ancora come avessi bisogno di farlo – credo..a volte..ma non posso più farlo. Mi sento come stessi uscendo dalla realtà TH: Is that because you feel differently about yourself? You feel better about yourself than you did? TH:questo perchè ti senti diverso? Ti senti meglio di come ti sentivi? J: Yeah, yeah, I think so. J: si si penso di si. TH: Would you feel useless or whatever, whatever you used to feel? Is a lot of that gone or is some of that still around? TH: ti sentiresti inutile, in qualsiasi modo sei solito sentirti? Ci sono cose che stanno ancora succedendo intorno a te? J: Occasionally it‟s around but I‟m better at it. The voices bring that, with them J: a volte qui intorno… ma mi sento meglio. Le voci portano questo, con loro TH: Rags the voice? TH: Rags la voce? 14 J:That‟s what Rags says and when he says it I believe it J:quello che Rags dice e io ci credo a quello che dice TH: Yes, I know, that‟s very tricky isn‟t it. At that time, when the voice is talking to you that seems to be true doesn‟t it? TH: si questo è molto complicato no?... e quando la voce ti sta parlando sembra sia vero no? J:Yeah, it is. It‟s absolutely true then J:si è vero..è assolutamente vero TH: So that‟s interesting isn‟t it - that stuff you used to believe about TH: è interessante questo no –quello che credi su di te, la voce è ancora yourself, you‟ve got over that a bit and somehow the voice, Rags, is sopra di te, Rags, ti sta ancora parlando, e sembra essere ancora vero – still saying that to you, and it still seems to be true - what do you che cosa ne fai di questo adesso? make of that now? J: sono terrorizzato da questo J: I‟m terrified of it really TH: Of Rags, the voice? TH: dalla voce di Rags? J: Yeah, because when he starts and says it, soon - really quickly I‟m powerless to disagree. And it makes me angry I suppose but then part of me expects it still, there‟s a bit of me that still expects that abuse - I know I‟m not doing it to myself anymore but I get it from him J:si perchè quando lui inizia e dice, presto – io mi sento in disaccordo ma senza forze. E questo mi fa arrabbiare suppongo ma la parte di me che ancora aspetta, c‟è una parte di me che ancora aspetta l‟abuso –io so che a me non lo faccio più ma lo aspetto da lui TH: When he says you‟re useless or something - is that true now? TH: quando lui dice tu sei inutile o qualcosa del genere - giusto? J: No J: No TH: It‟s not true TH: non è vero? J: Not really, no TH: Thinking about it, what could you say to yourself about the useless? What are you doing that‟s not useless, and that‟s much better? J: non del tutto, no TH: pensandoci, che cosa ti potresti dire sull‟inutilità? Che cosa stai facendo sul fatto che non ritieni di essere utile, e cos‟è meglio fare? J: I don‟t know J: non lo so 15 TH:How would you counter that? TH:come vorresti misurarlo questo? J: I don‟t know J: non lo so TH: What – you sometimes think you are useless? TH: tu a volte pensi di essere inutile? J: Sometimes. Not useless ….I beat myself up about things sometimes, not physically J: a volte... non inutile ….mi picchio a volte ma non fisicamente TH: But is it right that you are always useless? There are plenty of things you are doing now. You‟ve cut down your drinking, you‟ve sorted stuff out, you‟ve got a big family and you provide a lot of support to people, you go to the day centre. Is it right that you‟ve…useless sounds like don‟t do anything, you don‟t contribute, you‟ve got nothing to say. It doesn‟t sound to me as if it‟s terribly true now TH: ma è corretto che ti senti inutile? Ci sono molte cose che stai facendo ora. Hai smesso di bere, stai valutando le cose, vuoi una grande famiglia , supportare le persone, vai al centro diurno. Ed è bene che tu lo faccia…inutile non mi sembra, contribuisci, non hai niente da dire?... non suona così terribile ora J: No, no. There are things in the past that dwell on my mind that I‟m not proud of. J: No, no. ci sono cose che abitano nella mia mente del passato e di cui non vado orgoglioso. TH: No, no. TH: No, no. J: And if I get into thinking about those I feel rubbish, but I know what you mean about now – I do know what you mean J: e se ci penso sento che sono immondizia, ma so cosa vuoi dire adesso– TH: So, there is a kind of separation between the - you used to feel that all the time about yourself and now most of the time you don‟t feel like that but when the voice starts you kind of think, yeah, there it is and it‟s… TH: c‟è una sorta di divisione tra - quello che tu sei solito sentire su di te e adesso da quando non ti senti così ma quando la voce inizia inizi a pensare c‟è e c‟è….… J: It‟s like going back 20 years J: è come tornare indietro di 20 anni TH:When the voice talks about rubbish, what could you think now to counter that, what could you think to yourself? TH:quando la voce parla delle immondizie, cosa potresti pensare adesso per fronteggiarla, cosa potresti pensare di te? 16 J: I guess I could say to myself that I‟m not J:I credo potrei dire a me che non lo sono TH:I don‟t just mean when the voice is going because, as you say, that‟s almost impossible to counter things – you can‟t say anything then. But thinking about - what about when the voice is saying that you‟re rubbish. Is that right? Have you got some ideas that they might not be - telling the truth or saying stuff that‟s actually not true anymore. TH:non dico quando la voce sta arrivando perchè, come dici, questo è impossibile da prevedere – non puoi dire nient‟altro. Ma pensando al fatto che la voce dice che sei immondizzia. Giusto? Hai qualche idea che potrebbe non essere vero – dire la verità o cose che potrebbero non essere più vere..cose che dice la voce…. J: Yeah. J: si. TH: How are you not rubbish now? TH: non sei immondizia adesso vero? J: I‟m doing this aren‟t I, I suppose, I‟m coming here J: non mi sto sentendo cosi , credo che ci sto arrivando TH: Yeah, you‟re trying to sort things out TH: si, stai cercando di venirne fuori J: And I‟m glad I‟m doing that – it‟s good. But, I don‟t know, I don‟t J: e sono felice che lo sto facendo questo è buono. Ma non so perché… feel rubbish on a day to day basis. I‟ve been saying, I‟ve been ma non mi sento immondizia un giorno o due al massimo stavo dicendo, feeling all right recently mi sono sentito meglio recentemente TH: So most of the time you‟re not rubbish - you‟re doing stuff and things are coming together, and you‟re trying to get help and understand what‟s going on and sort it out. So - that doesn‟t sound like rubbish to me TH: beh per buona parte del tempo non ti senti immondizia – stai facendo cose che stanno andando insieme in questa direzione, e stai cercando di aiutarti a capire cosa sta succedendo e come venirne fuori…. allora – questo non mi suona come immondizia J: No, no TH: Do you think underneath it all that you are still rubbish, or is that only when the voices are there? J: No, no TH:pensi dopo tutto di essere ancora immondizia, o ti senti così solo quando ci sono le voci? J: Like we talked about I always used to feel that very strongly, and J: noi abbiamo parlato e mi sono sentito sempre molto forte, e un po‟ di bits of me still do. If I think about the past, certain things that I know me ce la fa. Se penso al passato certe cose che so non ti ho detto ma mi I haven‟t told you but that I‟m ashamed of I do feel bad, yeah. But I vergognavo di essermi sentito cattivo, si. Ma non penso sempre sempre 17 don‟t always think about that stuff a queste cose TH: No, it‟s interesting isn‟t it that the things you used to think about yourself are only really there when the voice outside of you starts saying it. TH: no è interessante vedere che le cose che tu eri solito pensare di te sono presenti soltanto quando la voce è esterna a te e sta parlando. J: Hmmm J: Hmmm TH: How does that strike you that the voice is now - is actually talking about what you felt in the past TH: quello che ti colpisce ora e' la voce che ti dice come ti sei sentito in passato J:The feelings are the same - it‟s horrible – it‟s terrible – J: I sentimenti sono gli stessi - orribile – terribile – TH: A very nasty feeling….yes, of course it is TH: un sentimento veramente sgradevole….si, lo è J: And the trouble is with the voices it doesn‟t just stop with the abuse there‟s all the stuff about harming myself and doing myself in – as you know I‟ve done that lots of times, nearly done it lots of times J: ed in coinvolgimento con le voci non si è fermato con l‟abuso c‟è tutto il discorso sul tagliarmi e farmi male – come sai ho fatto questo in passato, tante volte l‟ho fatto TH:And its bound to be dreadfully upsetting isn‟t it TH: e il limite è essere spaventosamente impaurito che succeda di nuovo J: It‟s just terrifying that going to happen again J: sarebbe terrificante se succedesse di nuovo TH:Have you ever thought – could you ever think - I know you don‟t think it now, I know you know the voice is Rags and that‟s sorted out with being a spirit and what god thinks and a lot of your other ideas, but if you could think it was something to do with how you used to think about yourself in the past, that‟s somehow still around, but just in the voice. If was actually - if it was part of how you used to feel about yourself, which has now kind of got represented in a different way – but actually was still part of how you used to think – it just happens to be now TH: questa cosa è coerente con l'essere uno spirito, con il pensiero di Dio e con molte altre tue convinzioni, ma se tu puoi pensarlo è qualcosa che ha a che fare con il modo in cui hai visto te stesso in passato, che è in qualche modo ancora presente, ma solo nella voce. Se è stato attuale se è stato parte del tuo modo di sentirti, che ora è in qualche modo differente - ma in realtà era ancora parte di come abitualmente pensavi questo succede adesso 18 J Yeah…. J: si…. TH: What does that feel like, if you could think about it like that? TH: come ti senti, se pensi a questo? J:I don‟t know – I mean, I don‟t think about it like that, I suppose. But…the feelings are the same, it makes me feel the same J:non so – cioè, non penso a questo, credo….ma…I sentimenti sono gli stessi, mi fanno sentire lo stesso TH: That‟s right – it‟s the fact that - those thoughts - when you first had them they were thoughts weren‟t they? TH: questo è ok – questo è il fatto – questi pensieri – quando li hai avuti la prima volta erano pensieri no? J: Yeah, yeah J: si, si TH: About you feeling bad. And now they seem to have become the voices – kind of different – they‟ve turned into Rags and he‟s on your arm TH: sui tuoi pensieri cattivi…. E ora dopo quelli sembrano essere iniziate le voci – di tipo diverso – si sono sottomesse a Rags e lui è sul tuo braccio J: Well, yeah - he‟s taken it over, almost J: beh si lui è sempre sopra…abbastanza… TH: He‟s taken it over. But actually they‟re very like what your thoughts used to be. TH:lui ti controlla. Ora però loro sono solitamente nei tuoi pensieri. J: Yeah, they are. J: si si lo sono. TH: And, if they are some representation of your thoughts from the past, would they be as powerful or as scary? Could you deal with them differently? TH: e se loro sono rappresentazioni dei tuoi pensieri dal passato, sarebbero forti o spaventose? Potresti dividerle differentemente? J: Yeah, yeah, I could, because I wouldn‟t take it – this is the thing J: si si potrei, perchè non potrei prenderle..questo è il punto… TH: What would that make you feel if you could think that – I‟m not saying you do, but if you could think that, how would that make you feel? TH: come ti farebbe sentire se tu riuscissi a pensare a questo – non sto dicendo cosa fare, ma se potessi pensarci, come ti sentiresti? J:It‟d be easier to deal with J:sarebbe più facile trattare con loro 19 TH:Would it? How? TH:lo sarebbe? Come? J:Because I wouldn‟t take any of that crap from anyone else – or myself J:perchè non prenderei niente dello schifo di qualcun altro – o di me TH: How would you manage – how would it make you feel a bit better? You‟ve said to me, you‟re not rubbish, you‟re not useless, you‟re doing good things, things are good enough – you‟re trying to sort yourself out. What would that do to what you thought about the voice when it‟s there? TH:come tratteresti come faresti a sentirti meglio mi hai detto, che non sei immondizia, non sei solito, stai facendo cose buone, cose abbastanza buone – stai cercando di venirne fuori. Cosa hai pensato sulla voce quando c‟era? J: It‟d be easier because I wouldn‟t be as worried about the consequences of not agreeing with him or not doing what he says, because that‟s… J: sarebbe facile perchè le conseguenze non sarebbero cosi preoccupanti se non fossi d‟accordo con lui o non facessi quello che dice…perchè questo è TH:How would you not do it? TH:come non lo faresti? J:How would I not do…? J:come io non farei…? TH: How would you be able to stop doing what it said, if you thought about it differently, if you had a different belief about it? TH: come fermeresti quello che dice, se I tuoi pensieri su questo sono diversi, se hai diverse credenze su questo? J: Because I wouldn‟t be – if I thought about it like that – which I don‟t – but if I did think about it in that way J: perchè non sarebbe – se io ho pensato a questo – non lo faccio – ma se non penso a questo in questo modo TH: No,no, if you could think about it like that TH:No,no, se tu pensassi a questo J: Then it would be all right because all the consequences wouldn‟t be there. Like when I used to beat myself up, drink, take drugs, cut myself, I was doing that to myself, it was pretty clear. With the voice there‟s lots of consequences of not obeying him J: poi sarebbe giusto perchè tutte le conseguenze non ci sarebbero. Quando ero solito tagliarmi, bere, usare droghe, mi stavo facendo questo, era chiaro. Ci sono conseguenze con la voce s enon gli obebdisci TH:But actually if it was just like when you had those thoughts before? TH:ma quando hai fatto questi pensieri prima? 20 J: Then it‟d be different, yeah J:sarebbe diverso adesso si TH: It‟d be different. And what would the consequences be if it was just like the thought – if the voice is actually like the thoughts? TH:sarebbe diverso. E cosa sarebbero le conseguenze dei tuoi pensieri – se la voce è come I pensieri? J: Don‟t know J: non so TH: Could you discount it in a different way? If it starts saying you‟re rubbish you need to cut yourself – what would…if you could believe that it wasn‟t such a separate thing - what would that do TH: potresti scoprirlo in un modo diverso? Se iniziasse a dire che sei immondizia e avessi bisogno di tagliarti – come sarebbe…– cosa faresti J:I could sort of argue with myself then, couldn‟t I, I suppose? J:I ci sarebbero una sorta di argomentazioni tra me e me , credo, no? TH: I don‟t know if it helps to argue at the time – that‟s quite hard. Could you feel better about it in some way? Would it be something that would make you feel a bit better? TH: non so se questa argomentazione ti aiuta nel tempo – è abbastanza dura potresti sentirti meglio in qualche modo? Ci sarebbe qualcosa che potresti fare per stare meglio? J:Yeah, might do. J:si potrei farlo. TH: How would it do that? TH: come potresti farlo? J: It‟s just less scary, isn‟t it? J: essere meno spaventato, no? TH: It would be less scary. Yes…. TH: essere meno spaventato. si…. J: That‟s less scary J: meno spaventato TH: Because, what‟s important is that you did deal with that yourself. I think there‟s still things you are worrying about, how you are. I think we need to deal with that as well – I think we need to look at how you feel about things and how you still feel about how you were when you were younger. But, you‟ve mainly dealt with that, and a lot of it‟s gone into the voice now TH: perchè la cosa importante è che tu hai trattato con te stesso. Penso ci sono ancora cose di cui sei preoccupato penso che dobbiamo anche trattarle queste cose – penso dobbiamo guardare a come ti senti su queste cose e come ti sentivi ancora quando eri giovane. Ma devi fronteggiarlo questo, e andare incontro alla voce adesso 21 J: You think? J: Dici? TH:Is that right? TH:Giusto? J: Well, maybe J: Beh, forse TH: Perhaps if it did, if it had done that? Yes, sorry, I‟m assuming that‟s something you can think about. If it had done that – could you deal with it in the same way that you‟ve already been - successfully – you‟ve looked after yourself a lot better, you‟ve decided things – said „I‟m going to stop that‟ and „that‟s no good for me‟ and „I don‟t have to keep doing that‟ TH: forse se l‟hai fatto, l‟hai fatto? Si scusa, sto assumendo che queste cose puoi pensarle. Se hai fatto questo – potresti trattare con loro nello stesso modo in cui hai già fatto con successo – hai guardato e cercato dentro te stesso molto bene, hai deciso cose – hai detto „devo fermare questo and „non va bene per me‟ e „io non devo cercare di fare questo‟…. J: Yeah, I know what you mean J: si so cosa vuoi dire TH:Might that be a possibility? TH:forse c‟è una possibilità? J: Yeah, it is a possibility. It is. And I think that - talking about it now – that makes sense, but when the voices are in there and flying around J: si c‟è una possibilità. C‟è. E penso che – parlandone adesso – che ha un senso, ma quando le voci ci sono qui intorno TH: When they start, you can‟t… TH: quando iniziano non puoi…..… J: I lose this J: perdo questo TH:Which is why it‟s really important to talk about it now when you don‟t have the voice because, as you say, when the voice starts that‟s a whole different experience – you‟re probably not able to think very clearly much at all, are you? You get overwhelmed by it. TH:perchè è veramente importante parlare di questo adesso quando non ci sono le voci perchè, come dici, quando le voci iniziano hai un‟esperienza diversa – non sei probabilmente in grado di pensare in modo chiaro, no? Sei sovrastato da loro…. J: Yeah, I do. J: si..lo sono….. 22
