Unit 10.2 (condizionale con il congiuntivo) CONDIZIONALE PRESENTE CON IL CONGIUNTIVO IMPERFETTO Conditional present tense with the imperfect subjunctive In Unit 9.1, 9.2 and 10.1 we studied the use of the four tenses of the congiuntivo when: 1. The main verb is in the indicativo presente. 2. The main verb is in the indicativo passato. A third case that we need to consider is when: 3. The main verb is in the condizionale presente. (for the use and forms of the condizionale presente see Unit 6.2) Generally, when the main verb is in the condizionale presente, the subject expresses a desire that is difficult or impossible to realize. The equivalent in English of this use of the subjunctive is in the following example: I wish he were here right now! Vorrei che fosse qui adesso! When the verb in the main clause is in condizionale presente the verb in the dependent clause must be in the congiuntivo imperfetto. Below are some examples of use of the condizionale presente to express a desire. Notice that “se” can be used instead of “che” for some verbs in the condizionale: Vorrei che I would like that … I wish that … Preferirei che … I’d rather that … I’d prefer that … Preferirei se … I’d prefer if … Mi piacerebbe se … I would like it if … Bisognerebbe che … One should … It would be necessary that … Sarebbe bello se … It would be nice if … Sarebbe giusto se … / che … It would be fair if …/ that … Sarebbe ingiusto se … / che … It would be unfair … /that … Sarebbe importante se … / che … It would be important if … / that … Notice that vorrei can be translated as “I wish” or “I would like”. Preferirei can be translated as “I’d rather” or “I would prefer”. Bisognerebbe is untranslatable exactly. It is a very common expression to mean “One should …” or “It would be necessary that …” Compare the use of the congiuntivo presente when the main verb is in the presente indicativo versus the congiuntivo imperfetto when the main verb is in condizionale presente. 1 Unit 10.2 (condizionale con il congiuntivo) presente indicativo + congiuntivo presente Voglio che tu arrivi in orario. I want you to arrive on time. It’s nice that they study Italian It is fair that the government decrease(s) taxes. It is necessary that students study more. condizionale presente + congiuntivo imperfetto I would like you to arrive on time. It would be nice if they studied Italian. It would be fair if the government decreased taxes. It would be necessary that students studied more. The expressions Magari ... !, Se solo ... !, Almeno ... ! are synonyms and have the meaning “If only …!” to express a desire that is unlikely to be realized. They also require the use of the congiuntivo imperfetto because their meaning is close to the condizionale presente of volere, “vorrei”. The following sentences are all synonyms: Vorrei che lui sapesse l’italiano! I wish he knew Italian! Magari lui sapesse l’italiano! [same] Se solo lui sapesse l’italiano! [same] Almeno lui sapesse l’italiano!
