- The registration used Our selection o f registration is based on Hermanns's organ specifications, which combined the austere tonal qualities o f the ripieno with trumpet and cornett registers and a rich palette o f flute tones. We know that Zipoli was the titular organist o f such an instrument at the time this collection was published. Clemente in Arezzo: ,,...avevo I'ingegno tanto versatile, ch'oltre a tante sue doti, era musico perfetto e facevo g l i organ; di piombo di man sua. I...) I n 5. (...) In 5. Gregorius House in Tokyo. The organ o f t h e Parish Church o f Riva Valdobbia The history of the old organ o f the Parish Church o f San Michele and Santa Maria Assunta of Riva Valdobbia in Valsesia (Piedmont, province of Vercelli) cannot be fully documented. The only certain things today are the several pipes built during the second half of the eighteenth century by the organ-builder Antonio Zali o f Oro di Boccioleto (Vercelli). In those days these pipes voiced in the church of Riva an organ whose construction began in 1767, according to the Parish expense registers. In 1870, the Bernasconi brothers of Varese carried out modifications and integrations in order t o adapt the organ t o the musical taste o f the nineteenth century. In 1951 the old organ was destroyed t o build a new modern one: luckily, the old pipes were not destroyed. Therefore, when the recent restoration was t o begin, a precious patrimony o f pipes was found dating back mainly t o the eighteenth century and t o 1870. The restoration carried out by Bottega Organara Dell'Orto 8 Lanzini of Dorme10 letto (Novara) presents original and interesting aspects. With the intention of restoring life to this precious sound material in a technical and historical background, the organ-builders have reconstructed a disposition in compliance with the pipes found as well as with some characteristics of the Italian organ tradition. In particular the keyboard presents a range of 62 keys (C-I t o P) with short first octave. The pedal keyboard has 23 pedals (C-I to do) with short first octave. Since the organ is built on a base o f sixteen foot, it is possible t o play at the real diapason as well as by transposing the performance an octave higher, thanks to the wide range of the keyboard. In this case, thanks to the pedal coupler, the pedal keyboard can become a real homogeneous extension towards the bass o f the keyboard stops, and can allow in this way the reconstruction of counterpoint and improvisation practice typical o f Renaissance Italian organs. In this way Dell'Orto Et Lanzini were able t o reconstruct an instrument that joins the liveliness of sound of the ltalian eighteenth century organs with some techni- cal characteristics o f even older organs, without losing some very precious sonorities typical o f the nineteenth century. The possibility o f voicing old and special musical practices can be added t o the natural role o f the organ as a support t o singing and as a partaker in religious rites. Corlo Dell'Orto, Mossimo Lonzini Domenico Zipoli's compositions f o r t h e organ Domenico Zipoli has gone down in musical history as a composer for the organ and the harpsichord. His works, among them the Sonate d'intovolatura for organ and harpsichord first published in 1716 in Rome, have been reprinted many times since the nineteenth century i n collections and anthologies o f eighteenth-century Italian music. Recently, a number o f sacred vocal works by Zipoli have been found in Latin America, where the composer lived from 1717 until the time o f his death. Domenico Zipoli was born in Prato in 1688. He initially studied in Florence, before going t o Naples t o study with Alessandro Scarlatti. Bolognese scholar Padre Giovanbattista Martini tells us how Zi poli left Naples because o f irreconcilable differences o f opinion between him and Scarlatti and finally concluded his studies with Bernardo Pasquini in Rome. In 1715, Zipoli became organist at the Chiesa del Gesi in Rome. The organ in this church was from the workshop o f the Flemish organ builder Wilhelm Hermanns, who had greatly influenced Italian organbuilding. In the following year, Zipoli left Italy with the Jesuit order he had joined t o settle first in Seville and then overseas. He died in Cordova on January 2, 1726, shortly before he was due t o take holy orders. The 1716 collection o f sonatas is arranged in t w o parts along the lines o f a printed volume t o which Zipoli was greatly indebted - though he wrote for quite different instruments: Arcangelo Corelli's Sonatas for violin and continuo op. 5, published in Rome in 1700. Like Corelli's collection, the first half of Zipoli's works for keyboard tends toward the "ecclesiastical" style; it is clearly intended for the organ. The extensive prefatory toccata is followed by five sets o f 11 versos and canzonas in various church modes, written to practice the "alternatim", and a number of pieces explicitly intended as a commentary on the various parts of the liturgy (such as the Offertory, the Elevation and the post-Communion). In this recording, we have also included a suite, following the model of the Corelli chamber sonata from the second part (whose compositional qualities actually point to its being harpsichord literature) and a partita, whose theme possibly served as the model for Johann Sebastian Bach's Aria variata olla maniera italiana BWV 989. Lorenzo Ghielmi Choir and organ In his treatise Vite de p i u eccellenti architetti,pittoriescultoriitaliani(1550) Vasari writes with reference t o Don Piero della Gatta, abbot o f the church o f San Clemente in Arezzo: "...avevo I'ingegno tanto versatile, ch'oltre a tante sue doti, era musico perfetto e faceva g l i organ; d i piombo d i man sua. (...) 12 ' I n 5.Clemente ve ne era u n altro p u r d i sua mano, dove aveva fatto I'organo i n alto e l a tastatura era bossa a1 piano del coro; e questa considermione g l i venne, perche egli erano pochi monaci a cantare i n coro, e voleva che I'organista cantassi esuonassi." ["... he was so universally gifted that, in addition to his many other talents, he was an excellent musician, even building organs with leaden pipes himself. (...) In San Clemente there was another organ, also of his building, which was erected aloft but nonetheless had its keyboard down in the choir; this was a cleverly considered idea, since there were very few monks in the choir and he wanted the organist to play and sing at the same time."] So the organist was to both play and sing! Remarkable though this sounds, this information is from one o f many historical sources which describe the old "alternatim" practice between organ and choir. This practice was applied t o the Ordinary of the Mass and, during the Vesper, to the Magnificat, the hymns and the psalms as well. While he might deviate from the simple cantus firmus, the organist did ' keep t o the mode and the cadences o f it. During the organ verso, the text could either be recited aloud or left out. In the Italian repertoire from the Codex Faenza t o Gabrieli, from Frescobaldi t o Padre Davide da Bergamo, evidence o f this performing practice is t o be found in innumerable organ versos and in different church modes. Treatises and other sources o f musical information give many such examples o f the Ordinary o f the Mass, the Magnificat and the anthems, while compositions intended for the psalmody are much rarer, although the psalms are regularly mentioned in the theoretical treatises as "alternatim" repertoire. This permits the assumption that the structure, which in turn favoured the development o f improvisatory practices. On this recording, i n accordance with seventeenth-century performing practice, Zipoli's versos are performed between the psalms and the canzona following each group o f verses replaces the antiphony. Our performance is supported by the following sources: A. Banchieri, L'organo suonarino, Venice 1605; G.C. Marinelli, Via retta della voce corale, Bologna 1671 ; F. Andrea da Modena, Canto Hormonico, Modena 1690; G.D. Catenacci, Raccolta di venetti, Milan 1794. Diego Frotelli Translotion: J H M Berridge Lorenzo Ghielmi teaches organ and ensemble playing i n the Early Music department a t the Civica Scuola d i Musica in Milan, where he is also the principal organist o f the Ahrend organ i n the Basilica San Simpliciano, performing Bach's complete organ works on it from 1992 t o 1994. After receiving his diploma in piano (cum laude in the class o f Lucia Romanini), organ and harpsichord, he completed his musical education in the class o f JeanClaude Zehnder at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. (...) I:..
