For many years now, photography has explored and accumulated a rich heritage of artistic
depictions of contemporary high fashion in stylistic contexts charged with nostalgia

The German photographer Cathleen Naundorf’s work stands at the crossroads between
art and fashion photography, in a dimension where luxury offers opportunities for
dreamlike imaginary explorations, and artistic references provide settings and scenarios
evoking a rich array of interpretations. Naundorf has specialised for some years now in
portraying beautiful women enveloped in some of the most stunning creations of
contemporary haute couture, transporting them inside sophisticated retro moods with
esoteric undertones through clever use of fictional scenery and stylistic echoes from
paintings. This artist’s previous experience as a painter can be seen especially in the way
she composes her images, but also through her use of photographic tools such as
extreme exposures and her highly personal processes of colour and printing.
In Cathleen Naundorf’s photos, the most breathtaking creations of designers including
Dior, Gaultier, Stephane Rolland and Elie Saab are imbued with carefully stylised
nostalgia, poeticising the fading tastes of the past and updating the aesthetic canons of
20th century commercial photography.

immaginari e i riferimenti artistici predispongono scenari dalle molteplici interpretazioni.
Da diversi anni la fotografa ritrae splendide figure femminili avvolte in alcuni degli abiti più
folgoranti dell’haute couture contemporanea, trasportandole in atmosfere dal gusto retrò
e dalle sfumature esotiche grazie ad un’abile uso della finzione scenica e ad accorgimenti
stilistici di stampo pittorico. La precedente esperienza dell’artista in questo ambito emerge
in particolare modo dall’accurato studio nella composizione delle immgini, ma anche
dall’uso creativo dell’esposizione e dalla personale rielaborazione cui sono soggetti gli
inchiostri fotografici.
Negli scatti di Cathleen Naundorf, le più preziose creazioni di stilisti come Dior, Gaultier,
Stephane Rolland e Elie Saab si tingono di nostalgia, vestendo i fasti di un tempo
trascorso e riattualizzando i canoni della fotografia commerciale del XX secolo.
