Dear Members,
The committee and students at first night of 2nd semester
classes received a visit from the tenor Lorenzo Rositano, who
with music teacher Dorothy McCormack visited the Dante
rooms. Lorenzo sang the Australian National Anthem at the
Turin Winter Olympics. He was promoting his performance at
the Arts Centre that week.
Our next event will be held on Saturday 24th August. The
Italian Car Rally “Matta Mattinata in Macchina” is always a
good challenge for our students to be able to use in a practical
way their ability to follow the instructions in Italian. Thank
you to Gino and June Moro for organising this every two
years. All Dante members, not only current students, are
invited to participate. Please note date change from flyer
included in July newsletter. Flyer with new date on web now.
In this newsletter we have the cultural insert on Giuseppe
Verdi and a flyer about the Renaissance Faire to be held on the
Gold Coast in October.
For the benefit of our current and past students who don’t
want to commit to a semester of Italian Language or just want
to add to their Italian learning, there are conversation groups
on Thursday mornings as well as mini courses offered from
time to time. Details are on white board in Aula 1. The next 4
week mini course “ Conversation for Beginners” offered by
Luisa Liussi starts on Thursday 22nd August at 10 a.m. Cost is
$80. Covering the topics of Family, House, Shopping, and
Cooking, this guided conversation course is suitable for
Beginners.
Expressions of interest are invited from people interested in
learning Italian Songs or Italian Theatre. Free workshops.

Welcome to a new semester of Italian learning
especially to students who haven’t studied with the
Dante before. I hope the semester is a rewarding
one for you.
What a wonderful end of semester function we had
in June. Thank You to all who contributed finger
foods, to Connie for the Pasta e Fagioli Soup and to
the people who set up the Dante courtyard to make
it look so wonderful. I think we have found a new
restaurant venue!!

----------------------------------------------A big ThankYou to the students who enrolled early
and paid their fees promptly. It has made life so
much easier in being able to ascertain which classes
will continue or which won’t.
This semester sees the return of the ‘Gran
professore” Gabriel. Bentornato! Over the semester,
Giovanna will be off to America for a short while
and Luisa will be taking a group to Venice.
We hope that students support the functions the
committee have organized for the semester. First
up, we hope you will enjoy the car rally planned.
Please organize a group with those in your class. It
should be fun.

STUDENTS’ CONTRIBUTIONS
Quando la gente pensa di 'amore', forse la maggior parte pensa di 'romanza.' Per esempio, 'Ah, la mia ragazza è la più
bellissima nel mondo intero!' Amiamo le rose, la musica, i cioccolatini, i gelati, i baci, gli abbracci, essere insieme da
soli, et cetera, vero?
Ma secondo me, c'è un po' di più. Penso che alla base di un amore profondo esistono certe altre cose. Prima è
l'amicizia. Per capire bene questa parola, ci dobbiamo chiedere questa domanda, 'Quali sono le caratteristiche di
un'amicizia vera?'
Ecco, alcune parole che descrivono certe di loro — l'accettazione, l'affetto, il rispetto, la solidarietà, la cura, la
gratitudine, il perdono, la tolleranza, la libertà, la fiducia, la speranza, la fede, il rispetto di sè, ecc.
Cosa ne pensi, tu?
Io so che potrei scrivere molto riguardante queste parole, ma invece, ti lascio a pensare un po' — per capire ed estrarre
l'essenza di ogni di loro.

ITALIAN WEEK - GAMES ACTIVITY
Wednesday afternoon we spent playing the games of Scopa and Scarabeo. For
Scopa you need to abandon the hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades and adjust
to a new system of suits. If you play with the smarties it is fast. Some
have played from childhood. If you are a beginner, it is fun too. Scarabeo
is the Italian version of Scrabble. Need some vocabulary here. They let you
have eight tiles instead of the usual seven. Opening collection handed two
Z's, two Q's and no vowels. Try making pizza, piazza, ....... out of that
lot. It was fun. And, equally enjoyable was the spaghetti bolognese
served to the gaming table by the resident chef. Looking forward to
another game.

ITALIAN WEEK – MINESTRONE ACTIVITY
Below is part of the power point presentation Luisa Liussi gave for making the minestrone. Luisa prepared the
minestrone prior to presentation so her minestrone could be eaten after the minestrone preparation workshop.
MINESTRA – MINESTRINA – MINESTRONE
Nel Friule era un piatto tipico invernale nella tradizione Contadina. Non c’e` un solo modo per fare il
minestrone. Si usano le verdure disponibili stagionali. Non e’ difficile da fare. E’ un piatto a basso costo.
Questa e’ la ricetta di mia Nonna Anna, “None Nute.” Si devono cucinare le verdure per un lunghissimo
tempo ....ore e ore... E tutti gli ingredienti devono essere messi a freddo. Gli ingredienti devono essere di
ottima qualita` e freschissimi. Per fare un buon minestrone e` necessario mettere a bagno i fagioli per 24 ore.
GLI INGREDIENTI: burro ed olio, 1 cipolla, 1 spicchio d’aglio,1 carota,1 gamba di sedano
100 g di fagioli borlotti secchi, 3 patate di media grandezza (intere), salvia fresca
rosmarino fresco, prezzemolo, 1 foglia di alloro, sale e pepe e 1 dado di brodo
I VERBI - mettere a bagno, sbucciare, tagliare, schiacciare, tritare, cuocere, aggiungere, girare, grattugiare
e servire

LA MIA VACANZA A FOLIGNO
A maggio quest’anno, io e la mia amica, Lindy di Simone, siamo andate a Foligno, una citta` medievale circa 200
chilometri al nord est di Roma. In treno, si puo` arrivare da Roma in 2 ore.
Siamo rimaste per 3 settimane in un appartamento in centro vicino alla Piazza della Repubblica. L’appartamento era
in un Palazzo medievale che avevano restaurato. Era bellissimo e eravamo molto comode. Pero` il tempo era
freddo. Purtroppo, era prescritto dalla legge che il riscaldamento doveva essere spento a maggio!!
A Foligno non c’erano molti turisti ed io e Lindy abbiamo parlato in italiano con la gente nei negozi, nei ristoranti
ecc. Abbiamo bevuto il vino rosso famoso in Umbria, il Sagrantino. Questo vino rosso era buonissimo.
Il primo giorno il tempo era cattivo con la pioggia. Gli ombrelli erano inutili. Ci siamo bagnate! Abbiamo cercato
un ristorante per mangiare del cibo caldo a da bere del vino. Erano le 15.00 e tutti i ristoranti erano chiusi!
Finalmente abbiamo trovato una piccola pizzeria che era “sempre aperto”. Qui, abbiamo conosiuto una coppia
gentile e simpatica, Cristina e Tony. Il loro locale si chiamava – “Trattoria e Pizzeria del Corso”. Cristina ha
preparato gli antipasti tipici di Umbria nel forno a legna – il pane, il formaggio cotto con il miele, le verdure alla
griglia ecc. Tony ci ha introdotti al vino, il Sagrantino. Faceva freddissimo fuori ma io e Lindy eravamo comode!
Un temporale fortunato!!!
Abbiamo passato molti giorni camminando nelle strade a Foligno per vedere gli edifici antichi, le case medievali ed il
ponte vecchio attraverso il fiume Topino. C’erano il Duomo, il Museo della Stampa e il Palazzo Trinci sulla Piazza
della Repubblica. Anche c’erano molti vicoli dove abitava la gente nelle loro case medievali. Per noi era
affascinante.
La Quintana, una festa medievale a Foligno dal 1613, e` cominciata mentre eravamo la`. Abbiamo visto la
partecipazione della cittadinanza in tutte le attivita` che era molto diverso dalle persone di qui. Purtroppo, siamo
partite prima del Palio la domenica prossima.
Per noi, era facile viaggiare in treno ed in autobus a Perugia, Bevagna, Montefalco, Assisi e Spello. Abbiamo
visitato Orvieto ma dovevamo prendere 2 treni, era un viaggio di 3 ore. Pero`, Orvieto era una bella citta`. Era
necessario salire nella Funicolare dalla stazione alla citta` in alto.
Lindy ed io abbiamo passato 2 notti a Spello per L’ Infiorata. Spello era una citta` medievale sulla collina ed ogni
anno per la festa di Corpus Domini, la gente fa i mosaici con i fiori sulle strade. Aver visto questi mosaici era
meraviglioso. Ho fatto molte fotografie. Era un’ esperienza indimenticabile.
Siamo state triste quando siamo partite per Roma dopo 3 settimane. Ci siamo divertite vivere in un appartamento
nel centro di Foligno.
Nel 2007, io e Lindy ci siamo incontrate in classe qui alla Gold Coast. Nel 2009, insieme con 6 altre studentesse
della Dante Alighieri di Brisbane, abbiamo frequentato il corso di settembre alla Scuola di Italiano Dante Alighieri a
Camerino.
