neighbouring area. Held in Montepulciano, among the unforgettable
views of the most authentic part of Tuscany, it starts with the paintings
of the most important Macchiaioli - Abbati, Borrani, Signorini, Lega
and Fattori – progressing through to 20th century works, touching
the various genres of painting: landscape, portrait, life in the fields,
urban scenes, contemporary life. The group of works by the painters
who developed the “macchia” in Florence in the 1860s is followed
by the protagonists of Tuscan Naturalism and therefore the most
committed artists, spurred by the needs of the new century, in
the renewal of pictorial languages. The exhibition, which presents
masterpieces such as L’Arno a Varlungo (The Arno at Varlungo) by
Odoardo Borrani, is enriched by a series of drawings, some of which
are preparatory sketches for famous and important paintings, such
as Mercato Vecchio (Old Market) by Telemaco Signorini, or Sole a
Seravezza (Sun at Seravezza) by Filadelfo Simi, a painting of which
the various phases of development are documented, from the first
“pen stroke” to the plotted drawing for transposition onto canvas.

Palazzo Ricci Academy
Palazzo Ricci Academy, the first German
music school to take up residence in Italy,
was officially opened in 2001 upon completion
of the restoration of the Renaissance palace
that houses it and after which it is named.
The project was generated by an agreement
between the Municipal Administration of
Montepulciano and the Hochschule für Musik
und Tanz Köln – Germany’s biggest conservatory
– and also thanks to the generous aid of private
sponsors and supporters who founded the nonprofit association. Every year, the Academy
offers about 40 master classes and workshops
attended by numerous talented young musicians
from all over the world. Also in Montepulciano, it
organises a concert season, an interdisciplinary
workshop of the Rhineland Academies and also
a Chamber Music Week which, this year, will
take place in collaboration with the 40th Cantiere
Internazionale d’Arte.

A “Nobile” path, a trail which speaks of history
and of ancient culture, a lake where nature reigns
The “Sentiero del Nobile”, registered by the Rete Escursionistica Toscana tourism network, is named after
the town’s most prized product: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The trail winds across the hillsides, among
vineyards and olive groves, covering a difference in altitude of about 270 metres and a length of about 18
km. The trail starts from Piazza S. Agnese, brushes the Temple of S. Biagio and then descends towards
other places that symbolise Montepulciano: the church of the Madonna della Querce and the wood of the
Madonna del Cerro, before coming to Montepulciano Lake, where it joins the “Sentiero della Bonifica”.
This second trail runs along the bank of Chiana Canal (Canale Maestro della Chiana), from Chiusi as far
as Arezzo: 65 km of practically flat land, for walking or mountain biking in absolute safety, making it ideal
for outings with children too. The “Sentiero della Bonifica” also touches Montepulciano Lake, a nature
reserve with an environmental balance that is protected and practically intact. The Visitors’ Centre not
only offers a mountain bike rental service and guided tours, including those on an electrically-powered
boat, it also houses a small museum and an info point on the flora, fauna and history of the area.

This year’s Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano [International Art Workshop] – to be held
from the 11th of July to the 1st of August – is the 40th edition. Forty years of events that make this one
of the most important appointments in a very large area. Classical opera, symphony and chamber
concerts, contemporary dance, theatre, jazz and midnight concerts: 40 appointments located
throughout 8 towns in the Terre di Siena over a period of 22 days; over 400 international artists
involved. The Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte, conceived in 1976 by Hans Werner Henze, envisages
the interaction between international professionals and young talents who express themselves in
a creative residence set among the riches in terms of architecture and landscape that characterise
Montepulciano. The 40th edition focuses on an ambitious theme: Land, war and peace. The programme
poses various cultural questions, starting from the reflection on the hundredth anniversary since
Italy entered the First World War (the opening concert, held on the 11th of July by the Italian Air
Force Musical Band will be commemorating this event). From attention to the Earth and to land, a
concept that also provides the inspiration for EXPO 2015, comes the spirit of a festival that extends
through the pretty views of Montepulciano and other towns in the area: Cetona, Chianciano Terme,
San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano, Sinalunga, Torrita di Siena and Trequanda.

This year the Bruscello traditional theatre group celebrates
its 76th anniversary: 1939-2015
The Bruscello, which is celebrating 76 years of activity this year (1939-2015) with the Decameron, a “brilliant” edition, represents one
of the most important performances linked to tradition: and not just for Montepulciano, but also for a very extensive surrounding area.
The lyrics are by Irene Tofanini and Chiara Protasi, set to music by Maestro Alessio Tiezzi, under the artistic direction of Franco Romani.
Given the size and the articulation of the work of reference, the Decameron by Boccaccio, this year the Bruscello does not intend and
cannot aim to take on all one hundred famous novellas. The approach chosen, which is very interesting and entertaining to tackle such a
vast work, will respect the basic characteristics that the Bruscello has always adopted: love and hate, dancing and stornelli, trickery and
disguises; and, above all, joy, which will definitely take precedence over sadness this year. It is the narration of the ten characters from
Boccaccio’s work, seven women and three men who, interpreting the role of the characters who they are going to be during the ten days
of novellas, go through the highlights of the episodes which, when the story ends, they should begin to perform.
As always, the actors are children and adults, men and women from Montelpulciano and nearby, who, every year, succeed in bringing the
Bruscello Poliziano to the centre of the cultural interests and theatrical life of the whole Val di Chiana.

On the last Sunday of August – which falls on the 30th this year –
Montepulciano hosts the traditional Bravìo delle Botti, a historical reenactment of a challenge between the town’s eight contradas, which
once used to compete with horses and now do it with barrels. These
barrels weigh 80 kg each and are rolled by two contestants, known
as “pushers”, along the uphill track which stretches for about 1600
metres and winds among the streets of the historical town centre to
the finishing line, in Piazza Grande, on the parvis of the Cathedral.
The race is preceded by an atmospheric historical parade made up
of over two hundred characters who offer flag throwing displays,
drumming and a glimpse of days gone by as they proceed through the
streets. The week before the race is full of important events, such as
the proclamation of the Gonfaloniere (a post of high office in medieval
times), the wonderful “Corteo dei Ceri” parade and the nocturnal
barrel-pushing trials. The contradas stay open every evening, ready
to welcome visitors into an atmosphere of festive anticipation, with
traditional local dishes, celebrations and music.

The Live Rock Festival is one of the most respected free music festivals in Italy, with great international
music, artistic originality, attention to ecological issues, high-quality food and wine and lots of youthful
vitality. The arena of the ex-Fierale Gardens welcomes thousands of young fans who are drawn here
by a shared curiosity in the proposals offered by an independent and increasingly alternative festival.

The most prestigious collaborations are those of Danjel Zèzèlj who designs the illustrations and the sets;
the illustrious voice of Silvia Boschero, borrowed from RadioRai, and the commitment of Legambiente,
which guarantees environmental sensitivity and 95% recycling of waste. And above all, there are 150
young volunteers who, every year, organise what, right from the very first edition, has been a highly
attractive social event.

41st Cart Race

Valiano, from 25th to 27th September
The “cart” is the traditional vehicle used by the youngsters of Valiano to have fun; it is made of four planks of
hard wood which form a trapezium; two “spindles” with two pairs of ball bearings, the front of which is used to
steer the cart, and two handbrakes. The race takes place over several descents which decide which contradas
go into the final. The start is from the highest hill in the town. The carts run along a course which is about 1 km
long, taking a downhill slope on gradients of up to 15% and with three very tight bends. Before the races, the
contradas dress up in medieval costumes and stage a historical parade, re-enacting the ancient splendour of
the old Castle of Valiano. The six Contradas that compete on the fourth Sunday of September every year for the
“Panno” (banner), hand-painted by a well-known artist, are Castello, Chiesina, Dogana, Fonte, Padule and Ponte.

The Tourist Information Office, situated in Piazza Don Minzoni, and the ticket and visitors’ assistance
service of the Crociani Civic Museum-Picture Gallery, at Palazzo Neri Orselli, in Via Ricci;
Ticket and assistance service for access to the terrace and to the tower of Palazzo Comunale, raised
positions that offer a fabulous view of the Apennines, Mount Amiata and Valdichiana.
Access is from April to October, every day, from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; the ticket office in the entrance hall
of Palazzo Comunale also houses a tourist information point.
With the support of the Municipal Administration, the Local Committee also organises the New Year’s Eve
Party held on the 31st of December in Piazza Grande, setting up the whole celebrations. A big bonfire sees in
the New Year, burning until dawn on the 1st of January, with live music and a midnight toast, with sparkling
wine and traditional desserts offered to everyone who is there; admission is free.
Events for 2015 include, on the 1st of June, “Tasting Art”, a guided tour of the Civic Museum on a historicalgastronomical theme, a sensorial itinerary which combines looking at food in the pictures on display with
tastings of the same dishes.

“Il Villaggio di Natale” is the new event which has changed the face of the town at a time
which is traditionally “peaceful” and has succeeded in extending the tourist season, which
now continues through the autumn and winter, until the start of the new year. The arrival of
tens of thousands of visitors from all over Italy has shown the success of the event, centred
mainly around the characteristic markets, with wooden chalets situated in Piazza Grande,
and Santa Claus’s Castle, set up in the Fort.
The event was held from the 22nd of November 2014 until the 6th of January 2015 and it
really livened up the whole area; visitors combined the original attractions with a visit to
the historical town and the possibility to taste the local food and wine specialities.
Organised by the association “Vivi Montepulciano” with the support of the Municipal
Administration and other local sponsors, the event is going to be repeated in 2015 and will,
once again, continue through to Epiphany 2016.
