Abstract
We present a synthesis of the knowledge on the cholevid fauna of Sardinia, with an annotated checklist and an updated
list of both published and unpublished collecting localities.
The Cholevidae (Coleoptera, Staphylinoidea) are a group of small to medium-sized beetles, most of which are
saprophagous; a significant percentage of Cholevidae are cave-dwellers, and some are highly specialized troglobitic
elements. In Sardinia, twenty-five species have been recorded so far. More than half of them are endemic to the island,
while some are sub-endemic (i.e. present also in Corsica or in Sicily and/or the Balearic Islands); nine species, belonging
to the genera Ovobathysciola and Patriziella, are specialized hypogean elements. Four more species, belonging to the
genus Bathysciola, are soil-inhabiting or cave-dwellers.
The authors stress the high biogeographic and biospeleological interest of Sardinian cholevids. In particular, the
colonization processes appear to be in good agreement with the current hypotheses about the origin and composition of
the existing fauna of Sardinia. The hypogean species of the genera Ovobathysciola, Patriziella and species of Speonomus
of the subgenus Batinoscelis are currently accepted as being related to the Baetic and Pyrenean lineages of Anillochlamys
and Speonomus, respectively; therefore, they should belong to the most ancient stock of elements, originated during the
Miocene drift of the Corso-Sardinian massif in the western Mediterranean. Some other endemic or sub-endemic taxa,
with W-Mediterranean affinities, are probably derived from more recent colonizers as a consequence of the several
connection/isolation phases which existed between Sardinia, Corsica, and other Mediterranean areas during the late
Miocene (Messinian) salinity crisis, and during the Plio-Pleistocene ice-phase-related strong variations in the sea level.
Finally, some widespread taxa, all epigean and winged, reached the island in more recent times, through active and
passive dispersal.

Introduction
The Cholevidae are a group of Coleoptera which has undergone several changes in taxonomy and
nomenclature. Cholevidae were related, during the XIX t h century, to the families Scaphidiidae or
Anisotomidae; a single genus (Leptodirus Schmidt, 1832) was also related to the Scydmaenidae. From the
beginning of the last century they were included in the Silphidae when Jeannel, in a series of works
culminating in a monograph (Jeannel 1936), separated the family Catopidae (and other families) from the
Silphidae. In accordance with the principle of priority, the name Catopidae was recently changed to
Cholevidae by Zwick (1979); this taxon is currently widely treated as a subfamily (Cholevinae) of the family

Leiodidae, and is divided into several tribes and subtribes (see Newton 1998; Perreau 2000, 2008). In this
paper, we still prefer to treat the Cholevidae as a distinct family (see Giachino & Peck 1998), represented in
Italy by five subfamilies (Ptomaphaginae, Anemadinae, Nemadinae, Cholevinae and Leptodirinae); we
consider Anemadina and Nemadina as subtribes of the single tribe Anemadini of the subfamily Cholevinae,
following Perreau (2000).
The Cholevidae are a species-rich taxon of the Coleoptera Staphylinoidea; cholevid beetles live in all
continents, Antarctic excluded, and are represented by small and medium-sized species (from 0.8 to 9 mm)
which can be saprophagous, necrophagous, guanophilous, and are usually hygrophilous and light-avoiding,
sometimes strictly pholeophilous in micromammal dens, often specialized hypogeans (Jeannel 1924, 1936).
In particular, regarding the Euro-Mediterranean fauna, the subfamily Leptodirinae is the one with the highest
number of species; it is is distributed, with very few exceptions, in the W-Palaearctic Region. Members of this
subfamily are often hypogean, with scarce dispersal ability, and have undergone strong differentiation through
isolation, which has resulted in a high endemicity rate. Moreover, the subfamily includes some of the species
most adapted to life in subterranean habitats: Leptodirus hochenwarti Schmidt, 1832 is very famous, often
being cited in biospeleology as the first troglobitic species ever to have been discovered and named.
The Italian cholevid fauna is one of the most diversified and species-rich, second only to the fauna of the
Balkan Peninsula. Forty-eight genera are recorded for Italy; the richest area for species and genera is the Alps,
particularly the Central and Eastern pre-Alps (Sbordoni et al. 1982; Zoia 1998; Giachino & Vailati 2005; Zoia
& Latella 2006), whereas in the peninsula and on the main islands less species are recorded, many of them
epigean, and some with a relatively wide distribution.
Material and methods
Data presented in this paper were for the most part obtained by a careful consultation of the specialized
literature. Particular attention was given to speleological magazines and publications, which are usually
scarcely known and rarely available to entomologists. All the caves are listed with the updated codes of the
regional speleological cadastre register; the code is given in brackets after the name of each cave.
Concerning the distributions of taxa, literature data were mostly provided by original contributions and
monographs, with detailed information on localities. Ancient papers and compilative catalogues such as those
by Bargagli (1871), Luigioni (1929), Porta (1926, 1934, 1949), Winkler (1924), or recent checklists such as
Angelini et al. (1995) and Alonso-Zarazaga (2004), reporting generic information like “Sardinia”, were cited
only in necessary cases. Ancient, erroneous citations of species never confirmed in Sardinia, like Choleva
cisteloides (Frölich, 1799) and Catops morio (Fabricius, 1792) (Bargagli 1871), were omitted.
Original material was provided by friends and colleagues (see: Acknowledgements). Unpublished data –
cited separately from published data under each species – regards material recently collected and identified by
the authors, and in some cases (particularly for critical species of the subfamilies Ptomaphaginae,
Anemadinae, Cholevinae) by Dr. P. M. Giachino (Settore Fitosanitario Regionale, Turin). Part of the
unpublished data was collected by members of speleological groups and personnel of the Centro Nazionale
per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversità Forestale “Bosco Fontana” (Verona) (CNBFVR) (cf.
Mason et al. 2006).
The nomenclature used is the one adopted by Zoia in Angelini et al. (1995) (Italian checklist), Zoia and
Latella (2005, 2006) and Perreau (2000, 2008). The name Catopomorphus Schaum, 1851 (of authors) has
been changed to Catopsimorphus Aubé, 1850, according to Newton (1998) and Perreau (2000, 2008).
Chorotypes refer to Vigna Taglianti et al. (1993, 1999), and are derived from the distributions specified in
Perreau (2000, 2008) and several authors cited in the text.
The administrative provinces listed in the checklist are those historically investigated (Sassari, Nuoro,
Oristano, Cagliari), in conformity with the data included in the CKmap project (Zoia & Latella 2005, 2006),
in the Regional Speleological Cadaster, and in the cartography of the Italian Touring Club. Therefore, the

names of the provinces (Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio) recently instituted in
Sardinia were not used. The provinces are listed in geographical sequence (north-south).

Coleoptera Cholevidae and biospeleological research in Sardinia
It is not surprising that research on this group of insects has often been conducted by biospeleologists: in fact,
biospeleology as a science officially began with the description of the above-mentioned Leptodirus
hochenwarti, and biospeleological research in Sardinia began with the discovery of a cholevid species.
Raffaello Gestro, director of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova, discovered the cholevid today
known as Ovobathysciola gestroi (Fairmaire, 1872) (Fig. 1) (attributed, in the original description, to the
genus Adelops Tellkampf, 1844) in a cave in Ogliastra, the Su Marmori cave near Ulassai, in 1871 (Fairmaire
1872; Gestro 1904). A second cave cholevid, Speonomus (Batinoscelis) lostiai (Dodero, 1904), was described
a few years later (as Bathyscia Schiødte, 1848) by Agostino Dodero, who shared with Gestro a passion for
entomological research in Sardinia.
Other Cholevidae of great interest were described in the same period by well known German-speaking
specialists, including the epigean (sometimes troglophile) species Ptomaphagus (Ptomaphagus) sardus
Seidlitz, 1887, Choleva (Choleva) doderoi Breit, 1903, Catops speluncarum Reitter, 1885 and, among
hypogean species, Ovobathysciola majori (Reitter, 1885). The latter species was dedicated to the
paleontologist and biogeographer Forsyth Major, who discovered it during a digging campaign in caves of the
Orosei Gulf (most likely in the “grotta dell’Arciprete”, which corresponds to the Toddeitto Cave: Reitter
(1885); Gestro (1904)). In the following years, the fundamental monographic revisions by Jeannel (1924)
provided the correct taxonomic position for this species.
The first systematic biospeleological research conducted in Sardinian caves were organized by Saverio
Patrizi and Marcello Cerruti in the ‘50s: from 1952 to 1956, they conducted four expeditions on the island,

and discovered highly specialized endemic species (in some cases belonging to new genera) of various animal
groups, which were described by themselves or by other specialists (Latella 2007). Such research led to an
updated catalogue of the hypogean arthropods of the island (Cerruti 1964, 1968).
Patrizi and Cerruti’s research was continued by a long series of biospeleological explorations and studies
of Sardinia, starting in the first half of the ‘60s, and conducted by local researchers and by researchers from
other Italian and foreign regions (for a detailed chronicle regarding the entire island, or single parts of it, see
Cassola (1982), Grafitti et al. (1999), Grafitti (2002a), Casale et al. (2006), Grafitti (2007a, 2009), Casale et
al. (2008), Grafitti and Merella (2008)). This research is still in progress today, with very interesting results.
Specifically concerning the Coleoptera Cholevidae of Sardinia, the following events from the last decades
are worthy of mention: 1. The discovery of Ovobathysciola grafittii Rampini & Sbordoni, 1980 and
Patriziella nuragica Rampini & Zoia, 1990 in the north-west of the island by biospeleologists from Sassari
(Giuseppe Grafitti and Mauro Mucedda, respectively): the two species belong to genera which had thus far
been considered exclusive of Jurassic “Supramonte” massifs with older fauna, localized in central-eastern
Sardinia; 2. The synthesis of the knowledge on cave Cholevidae of the Italian fauna by Sbordoni et al. (1982),
with particular emphasis on the biogeography of the group; 3. The review by Giachino (1990) of those species
of Bathysciola Jeannel, 1910 which are close to B. damryi (Abeille de Perrin, 1881) (with description of the
new species B. doderoi Giachino, 1990); the genus is represented mostly by edaphic and endogean species,
which are often troglophile in Sardinia; 4. The reviews by Giachino and Vailati (1993) of the subfamily
Anemadinae and a synthesis by Zoia (1998) of Italian Cholevidae; 5. The publication of georeferenced
distributional data for the Italian species by Zoia and Latella (2005, 2006), within the CKmap project
(coordinated by the Natural History Museum of Verona and the Italian Ministry for the Environment); 6. The
discovery by Mauro Mucedda of a further species belonging to the genus Patriziella Jeannel, 1956 (P.
muceddai Casale, 2004) in Urzulei “Supramonte”; 7. Studies of the phylogenetic and phylogeographic
relationships of some of the taxa conducted with a biochemical and biomolecular approach by Sbordoni et al.
(1990) and Caccone and Sbordoni (2001), and with a morphological and cladistic approach by Fresneda et al.
(2007); 8. Field investigations into specialized hypogean taxa of the genus Ovobathysciola Jeannel, 1924, and
investigation into their distribution (Casale unpublished data).
List of species
Eleven genera (23% of those present in Italy are known for Sardinia, with 26 described species. More than
half of the taxa are endemic or sub-endemic (Corso-Sardinian), some species belonging to the genera
Speonomus Jeannel, 1908a, Ovobathysciola and Patriziella (Fig. 2) are specialized hypogeans (exclusively
Sardinian).

Anemadus acicularis (Kraatz, 1852)

Nargus (Nargus) badius badius (Sturm, 1839)

Distribution. Polytypic species, distributed in the whole of Europe, eastwards as far as the Caucasus and
Anatolia. The nominal subspecies in Italy is distributed in the mainland and Sicily. It lives in the leaf litter of
broad-leaved woodlands, and occasionally enters natural caves.
Chorotype. European.
Remarks. Known so far only from one site in Sardinia.

Distribution. The species, treated in the wider sense of Perreau (2000), is spread in North America,
Europe and Asia. In Italy the species, with the subspecies watsoni, is spread in the whole mainland and in
Sicily. It normally lives in the most superficial layers of the litter and at the entrance of caves.

hand, some specimens were recently collected (13.VII.2007) in deep soil from oak and laurel woodlands
outside the cave (P. Magrini pers. comm.).

Remarks. The above unregistered cave, very difficult to access, is definitely located on Mount Arquerì,
where it was firstly mentioned by Gestro (1904) regarding the collection of a cholevid by the entomologists A.
Dodero and U. Lostia di S. Sofia. The specimens were described by Jeannel (1911) as Bathysciola Lostiai
subsp. diabolica, with the correct locality (see also Porta 1926, 1934; Wolf 1938). Later, Dodero (1916)
described the carabid beetle Reicheia elegans (today Typhloreicheia elegans), collected at the entrance of the
same cave “located in a forest”, and this information was used correctly in several later publications on
Carabidae (see Magistretti 1965). A. Casale was the last biospeleologist who, in 1970 with the guidance of a
shepherd, was able to locate and explore the cave (Casale 1974), where he collected one specimen of S.
diabolicus and the spider Tegenaria armigera Simon, 1873 (Agelenidae) (see Brignoli 1971, 1972). Errors in
the localization of this cave started with Jeannel (1924), who mentioned the cave as located on Mount Tricoli,
a granitic-porphiric massif in the Gairo area; later citations by some other authors, such as Müller (1930),
reported Jeannel’s wrong information.

paleogeographic, and paleoclimatic events which related Sardinia, and more in general the Corso-Sardinian
plate, with the evolution of the Western Mediterranean from the Oligocene to the present day (e.g., for a
synthesis: Casale & Vigna Taglianti 1996, and for a paleogeographic reconstruction: Steininger & Rögl 1984).
The great paleogeographic value of the area is reflected by its biogeographical value; it is not by chance, as
underlined by Sbordoni et al. (2005), that three conferences of the “Società Italiana di Biogeografia” were
dedicated to Sardinia. In those conferences, and in other instances, the specialists of each faunal group
presented and discussed the history of the island’s fauna, and the shaping effect of the paleogeographic and
paleoclimatic events which occurred in the area (see Baccetti 1964, 1983; La Greca 1990).
Cholevid beetles, as already mentioned in the introduction, unlike other small-sized insects, have attracted
the attention of several specialists interested in their biogeography. Indeed, these beetles live in peculiar
habitats, sometimes show extreme adaptations, and distributions that are either disjunct in limited areas, or
punctiform (caves, islands, mountain massifs). Therefore a vast amount of literature (partly listed in the

previous paragraphs) is available concerning this group, dealing with taxonomic, phylogenetic, distributional,
faunal, ecological, and biogeographical characteristics. Recently, Cholevidae were also mentioned in
publications related to the conservation biology of Sardinian karst habitats (Casale et al. 2006).
Although the Cholevidae are not particularly abundant on the island, their distribution agrees with most of
the hypotheses on the composition and distribution of the existing Sardinian fauna. In fact, for this taxon some
very distinct heterochronic phases in the population process can be distinguished, which the ancient authors
currently related to the concept of a static “Tyrrhenid”, not divided into dynamic microplates (Holdhaus 1923,
1924). This concept was thoroughly modified in more recent years, due to the dynamic reconstruction of the
evolution of the Western Mediterranean, which includes: the migration and counter-clockwise rotation in the
Western Paleo-Mediterranean of the Corso-Sardinian micro-plate which, starting from the Southern Iberic
peninsula, reached its current position (Alvarez 1972; Cherchi & Montadert 1982; Boccaletti et al. 1990); the
salinity crisis of the Mediterranean, which occurred during the Messinian (Hsu et al. 1977) and produced land
bridges that lasted until 3.5 mya; the numerous marine regressions and transgressions (some reaching the level
of 120 m) that occurred from the Pliocene to the Quaternary and were related to glacial and inter-glacial
events (Ulzega 1988; La Greca 1990), which again allowed the connection between Sardinia and Corsica, and
of the two islands with those of the Tuscan Archipelago and with some parts of the Italian peninsula.
In particular:
1. The affinities linking the most specialized hypogean species of the genera Speonomus, Patriziella and
Ovobathysciola with congeneric taxa (albeit attributed to distinct subgenera: Speonomus [sensu stricto] and
Batinoscelis Jeannel, 1924, respectively) or with closely related genera (phyletic lineage of Anillochlamys
Jeannel, 1909) present today with many species in the Baetic-Pyrenaic area, appear to be plausible. Such
species are today included in the most ancient assemblage of the island’s fauna, and originated during the
Miocene drift (occurred from 29 to 20 mya, estimates varying according to authors) of the Corso-Sardinian
microplate in the Western Paleo-Mediterranean.
Besides the morphological features used by traditional taxonomy (Casale et al. 1991), biochemical and
molecular reconstructions further corroborate this historical reconstruction (Sbordoni et al. 1999; Caccone &
Sbordoni 2001), and give the opportunity to calibrate the chronology of the divergence rates between the
species.
However, a recent, very accurate phylogenetic analysis (Fresneda et al. 2007) shows the polyphyletism of
the genus Speonomus, and one clade (or “phyletic series”), Anillochlamys + Paranyllochlamys Zariquiey,
1940 + Spelaeochlamys Dieck, 1870, plus Ovobathysciola and Patriziella, weakly supported by the cladistic
analysis, suggests a very early differentiation of Patriziella. The latter hypothesis could explain both the
monophyletism (unexpected) of Patriziella, which emerged from the molecular (Caccone & Sbordoni 2001)
and morphological (Casale 2004) analyses (which implies very diverse heterochronic phases in the
colonization of the subterranean habitat by the ancestors of the extant species), and an isolated position of
Ovobathysciola gestroi from the congeneric species. As a consequence, the phylogenetic reconstruction of
these groups, which are taxonomically and geographically more isolated (Fig. 3), and their biogeographical
history, are open to further investigations.
2. The affinities between the epigean species which are endemic to Sardinia or sub-endemic (Corso-Sardinian,
or present also in Sicily and the Balearic Islands), and the West-Mediterranean species, are now easier to
explain.
The hypothesis according to which the ancestors of species of Bathysciola of the damryi group showing
clear affinities with Apennine species colonized the Corso-Sardinian massif in the Messinian using the land
connections existing during the Mediterranean salinity crisis (Sbordoni 1982; Giachino 1990), still holds.
As for the origin of the macropterous species widely distributed in Sardinia, in some cases troglophilic
and/or guanophilic, but always with good dispersal abilities (such as Ptomaphagus (Ptomaphagus) aritzensis,
P. (P.) clavalis, Choleva (Choleva) doderoi and Catops speluncarum), the most likely explanation appears to

be a colonization process followed by differentiation which occurred during the Plio-Pleistocene
transgressions. Such theory is supported by genetic data provided by Sbordoni et al. (2005), who dated the
differentiation of Dolichopoda muceddai Rampini & Di Russo in Casale et al. 2005 (Orthoptera,
Raphidophoridae) (species endemic to Sardinia) and its congeners of Corsica from those of Tuscany back to
the Pleistocene (based on a divergence time between species pairs of Dolichopoda Bolivar, 1880 between 2.4
and 0.6 mya).
3. Finally, the presence of species with a wider distribution (Holarctic, European, Mediterranean) is clearly
due to recent active and/or passive immigrations, according to the classic colonization models of island
biogeography.
However, some aspects of the distribution and affinities of Sardinian Cholevidae are still unclear, as happens
with other animals, above all on islands. In particular: the unclear affinities of Bathysciola fortesculpta, an
endemic hypogean species of the Mount Albo massif; the absence in Sardinia of species belonging to the
genus Parabathyscia Jeannel, 1908b, which is present in Corsica instead; and the apparent absence of
specialized hypogean Coleoptera (included Cholevidae) in South-Western Sardinia (Sulcis-Iglesiente), where
numerous steno-endemic invertebrates live in the numerous caves of the area.
