The Roma Fiction Fest re-opens and aims at the market. The Region of Lazio has undertaken the path of planning and valorising the audiovisual field with laws, funding and the promotion of international events, such as this festival, a tailored event dedicated to the world of television fiction. The first two editions of this festival have been largely successful among critics and audiences alike and – more importantly- have attracted large numbers of industry professionals. As President of the Lazio Region I’m proud of the results gained so far by this event. At the same time I’m well aware that a new challenge is vital to the growth of the festival. For this reason we have decided to further enrich the festival offer with a section aimed at producers, directors, operators and buyers. The audiovisual field represents that place where our National culture and imagery have been expressed and are still being expressed and, at the same time, a field of excellency of our economy: the region houses 70% of Italy’s film and television industry as well as being one of Lazio’s most important sources of occupation and economic growth, second only to the tourist industry. It’s an ever-developing field, with a 10% annual growth. It has a national turnover of over 350 millions of Euros and is ranked fourth in the European market. We hold an important font of resources, knowledge and skills deserving valorization, exportation and re-launching. The Roma Fiction Fest was born as a result of all this. And this is why we wish the Festival to be an entertaining event for audiences and a chance of exchange between industry professionals, an important instrument that will furthermore make of the Lazio Region a benchmark for the audiovisual industry. Our aim is to see the Roma Fiction Fest grow and 5 become an important element in the cultural life of the region and, at the same time, a useful instrument to the audiovisual industry. We wish for Lazio to become a market open to both Italian and International producers and buyers, a place of exchange and development. Above all I wish to give impulse to the exhortation of our productions by creating in our region a launch pad for our audiovisual system on a national as well as European and world basis. And this is why the third edition of the festival, as well as featuring exhibitions, previews and guests will also have a market area entirely dedicated to industry professionals. Rome and the Lazio Region are ready to become a further benchmark to all television fiction fans and professionals. The Lazio Region is ready to devolve its structures and resources to the challenge. The Roma Fiction Fest has the potential to become an important showcase for Italian productions, as well as a meeting point for a creative and economic dialogue and exchanges between our industry and that of other countries. The outstanding results of the 2008 edition dedicated to industrial professionals prove it. In its capacity as the economic institution of the Capital, the Rome Chamber of Commerce is pleased to renew its contribution to the Roma Fiction Fest. Our choice is in line with a policy devoted to the constant promotion of the development of an entrepreneurial network by levering on those sectors capable of generating a multiplying effect on local income, employment and enterprises. In recent years, the TV fiction industry has gained growing importance both on a cultural and economic level, with positive relapses in the fields of tourism and craft. More generally, the audiovisual industry represents one 7 of the most authentic traditions and vocations of the capital area. Today the Roma Fiction Fest represents a precious cultural and planning stimulus, capable of promoting an industrial development of the field, as well as adding value to exchanges and conferring exportability to productions. Our hope is to see the festival become a fly-wheel for the consolidation of the international relations of this industry. The Roma Fiction Fest, it entered among the list of the most significant events expressed by the audiovisual industry. Born out of a branch of the film industry, the audiovisual industry has today grown to become a relevant production activity in Rome and its hinterland. The rapidity with which the festival has established itself is the evidence of its functionality as a synthesis and valorization of a productive activity which has developed throughout the years and affirmed itself in a non-easy economic context that today involves thousands of professionals. The television fiction could rightly be considered as the present form - and in some aspect even the evolution - of a literary stream, the roots of which can be traced back into popular literature and historical novels, in other words, that rich wealth of stories, biographies, fairytales and tales capable of winning the interest and the emotions of an audience much wider than the audience that devotes itself to reading with erratic attention. We may say that the television medium has triggered a lot of potential for involvement which till now had failed to find a means to fully express itself and thus reaches not thousands but indeed millions of people who, through this form of entertainment, are drawn into our history, traditions and into a remote and sometimes even less remote past that would have otherwise remained distant. So, it’s very important to think about a tv fiction as a medium of cultural diffusion towards the so large audience. I hope that initiatives such as the Roma Fiction Fest, so eagerly conceived and promoted by the Television Producers Association, will 9 help valorize this function, carried out by audiovisual industry beyond the distribution of products for the simple purposes of ratings and in parallel advertising income. The more we recognize the cultural value of television fiction, the more opportunities will arise to support the companies that produce it. This year’s rich catalogue is the true evidence of an already expanding sector. But if there are – and there is no doubt about that – any possibilities for a further growth, these should not go wasted. To discard them would cause the malfunctioning of an economic, technological and cultural potential in a field in which Italy has given ample proof of being able to compete with those countries which today are considered ahead in the field of fiction production. With its second edition the Roma Fiction Fest has become a leading European event capable of combining the presence of international fiction audiences, producers, professionals, broadcasters and stars. Its screenings have attracted a large number of spectators thanks to the strong presence of international stars (forty American talents attended the Roman event as representatives of major TV hit series and new releases planned for the Italian market) and Italy’s most famous TV actors and actresses. On the other hand, both major and independent producers were able to use the event as an important showcase by presenting their work to the Italian and international press. A large number of professionals attended the festival’s pitching sessions, a market of ideas for the television of the future. Truthful to its original mission, the Roma Fiction Fest has been an open and friendly event to the general public, it has been able to manage the presence of numerous national and international stars successfully and has guaranteed industry professionals a focused 11 and in-depth attention, all this by combining moments of entertainment and professionalism. Just like the previous edition, this year’s festival, scheduled for July 6-11, 2009, will feature spectacular events, eagerly awaited previews and internationally acclaimed television stars. The festival also wishes to attract the attention of a wider number of industry professionals and become an essential benchmark for all those working in the field of TV fiction. PARTNERS PARTNERS PARTNERS PARTNERS We are currently working on the third edition of the Roma Fiction Fest. Many believed in the need of a Festival centred on the fiction industry. And the consolidation obtained by our event in only two years really proves the effectiveness and potential of the project. On this brochure you were able to read about the personalities of the television and fiction world, the sections, the screenings, the events, the communication, the very meaning of this festival during its first two editions. But also about its Partners and all the prestigious national and international companies which are growing more and more fond of this event and their role as protagonists within the Festival. Being a protagonist here doesn’t simply imply the participation to an important brand showcase offering extraordinary standards of visibility and relations, it also means being recognised as a part of the event, a plus and, in many cases, identification and programme. The ever-growing success of this event encourages us to keep pursuing this path and deepen the collaboration with our partners both old and new, so that they may not only become a part of the event but also be the event. We are on the look out for new ideas and willing to share our own. Ideas that will strongly characterise the quality of these presences on a communication and relational basis, but also the events that will be featured in this upcoming third edition. Our wish is to guarantee to the companies willing to step on board representation to their strategies, their goals as well as their very soul.
