1997); il sottoscritto ha successivamente rinunciato.

compito di responsabile per la produzione in Italia dei dati necessari al popolamento del

GSC2 con il compito di disegno, sviluppo e manutenzione del software per il pipeline
processing delle lastre digitalizzate costituenti la base dei dati grezzi per la realizzazione del
Guide Star Catalogue II, previsto dall’accordo di collaborazione tra lo Space Telescope
Science Institute (S.T.Sc.I) e il Consiglio delle Ricerche Astronomiche (C.R.A.).
1995-1996
è sotto contratto di Collaborazione Coordinata e Continuativa con
l’Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino e lo STScI (Space Telescope Science Institute) da
svolgere a Baltimora (USA), inserito nel progetto GSC2 con il compito di sviluppare

Attivita’ Scientifica
L’attività scientifica svolta ed in corso di svolgimento nel campo delle Tecnologie Astrofisiche è
stata, coerentemente con la linea di ricerca dell’ATG (Astrophysical Technologies Group, divisone
tecnologica dell’Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste), dedicata prevalentemente alle tecnologie
informatiche per l’astronomia e l’astrofisica.
Mediante la partecipazione a grandi progetti strumentali sia nazionali che internazionali, l’attività di
ricerca tecnologica è consistita (e consiste tuttora) più specificatamente nella progettazione e
realizzazione del software di analisi e gestione dei dati, sfruttando le più attuali soluzioni dal punto
di vista informatico (programmazione e database object-oriented, utilizzo di moderni sistemi
operativi real-time e non, organizzazione e definizione di data model basati su xml,
parallelizzazione spinta).
Le conoscenze tecnologiche e l’esperienza osservativa acquisita nel corso degli anni, ha portato il
sottoscritto a collaborare con diversi gruppi per la produzione di articoli a carattere più
spiccatamente scientifico.
Di seguito sono descritte in maggior dettaglio le varie attività/progetti seguendo un ordine
temporale inverso. Tale suddivisione è stata fatta per chiarezza di esposizione in quanto esistono
delle inevitabili sovrapposizioni.
1. Euclid, una delle due medium-class mission selezionate da ESA alla fine del 2011
nell’ambito del programma Cosmic Vision 2015-2025, è frutto dell’unione del Dark
Universe Explorer (DUNE) e dello Spectroscopic All-sky Cosmic Explorer (SPACE). La
missione Euclid ha quindi un doppio obiettivo, lo studio della materia e dell’energia oscura
attraverso l’osservazione del fenomeno del weak gravitational lensing (con i canali di
imaging tramite lo strumento Visible Imager, VIS) e la misurazione delle oscillazioni
acustiche della materia barionica (tramite il canale spettroscopico con lo strumento NearInfrared Spectro-Photometer, NISP). A giugno 2012 Euclid ha ottenuto l’approvazione per
iniziare la fase di costruzione; attualmente la data di lancio è prevista nel 2020. INAF-OATs
ha la responsabilità del coordinamento del segmento di terra scientifico della missione, in
diretta cooperazione con ESA. In quest’ambito, in base all’esperienza acquisita durante la
missione Planck, il mio ruolo e’ stato in prima sede di assumere la responsabilità dell’SDC
Italiano (Science data Centre) con il compito di progettarlo, organizzarlo ed infine renderlo
operativo sino alla release dei prodotti. A partire dal 2015 ho assunto l’incarico di ECSGSM
(Euclid Science Ground Segment Manager) con l’incarico di gestire l’intero segmento di
terra di Euclid, di conseguenza le varie Organization Unit (OU) e Science Data Center
(SDC) posizionate nei vari paesi che collaborano al progetto. Al momento l’SGS (Science
Ground Segment) sta concludendo la chiusura delle azioni definite durante la SRR (System
Requirements Review) che e’ stata passata con successo.
2. LSPE-STRIP (STRatospheric Italian Polarimeter) pallone finanziato dall’Agenzia Spaziale
Italiana (ASI). Lo studio della polarizzazione dell'emissione diffusa nelle banda delle
microonde su vaste regioni di cielo riveste grande interesse scientifico sia dal punto di vista
cosmologico che astrofisico. Misure accurate richiedono una nuova generazione di
esperimenti da pallone o da satellite con strumenti ad alta sensibilità e con ampia copertura
in frequenza in grado di rilevare il debole segnale polarizzato e di discriminare le
componenti galattiche da quelle cosmologiche. Una variante del progetto a pseudocorrelazione di Planck-LFI, ottimizzata per la polarizzazione, è stata sviluppata per
l'esperimento QUIET che consiste in schiere compatte di polarimetri coerenti a basso
rumore in banda Q e W. Nell'ambito di questo progetto è stato proposto di utilizzare i
polarimetri di QUIET per realizzare un canale ultra-sensibile per una survey profonda in
banda Q (40 GHz) ed un canale in banda W (90 GHz) da utilizzare in combinazione con un
analogo canale bolometrico per una verifica degli effetti sistematici fra i due strumenti che
saranno montati sul pallone LSPE (Large Scale Polarization Explorer): STRIP
(STRatospheric Italian Polarimeter) a bassa frequenza in due bande a 44 e 90 GHz, SWIPE
(Short Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer) ad alta frequenza nelle tre
bande a 95, 145 e 245 GHz. Il mio ruolo si configura nell’ambito dello strumento STRIP e
in particolare nelle attività di definizione del software di acquisizione e storage dei dati a
terra per la successiva analisi e della realizzazione di un sistema di visualizzazione delle
telemetria e dei dati scientifici durante il volo per verificare le performance dello strumento.
LSPE è stato approvato da ASI nel 2010; il suo lancio è previsto nel 2016 dalla base di
Longyearbyen sulle isole Svalbard durante la notte Artica con l’utilizzo di un pallone di
8×105 m3; la durata del volo sarà maggiore di due settimane.
3. PLANCK è la terza missione medium–sized (M3) del programma scientifico dell’ESA
“Horizons 2000”. Con il suo telescopio da 1.5 metri di diametro e con i due strumenti a
bordo (LFI a responsabilità italiana e HFI a responsabilità francese) ha osservato
simultaneamente il cielo in nove bande di frequenza tra 30 e 857 GHz con una sensibilità,
risoluzione angolare e copertura in frequenza mai ottenuta simultaneamente in precedenza.
Il satellite e’ stato lanciato il 14 maggio 2009 e si e’ posizionato in un orbita di Lissajous
attorno al punto L2 del sistema Terra – Sole, la durata della missione nominale ha permesso
l’osservazione di due volte l’intera sfera celeste in circa un anno, con le successive
estensioni vista la longevità e la facilità delle operazioni, il cielo e’ stato osservato
continuamente per quattro ani nel caso di PLANCK-LFI. Lo strumento e’ stato posizionato
in orbita di parcheggio in modalità sospesa il 23 Ottobre 2013. Le mappe del cielo a
microonde che sono state prodotte da Planck/Low Frequency Instrument (LFI)
rappresentano un progresso scientifico cruciale nella determinazione di tutti i parametri
cosmologici principali, non-degeneri rispetto alla CMBA (Cosmic Microwave Background
Anisotropy). L’Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste (INAF-OAT) entra in questo progetto
in qualità di responsabile della progettazione e della realizzazione del Data Processing
Center (DPC) ed in qualità di coordinatore a livello internazionale dei pacchetti lavorativi ad
esso afferenti a cui partecipano tredici istituzioni internazionali. La complessità della
riduzione e dell’analisi dei dati ha reso la progettazione e la realizzazione del DPC
un’attività particolarmente innovativa sia da un punto di vista scientifico che da un punto di
vista di ingegneria software, in quanto ha richiesto la creazione di un ambiente di
elaborazione dati particolarmente flessibile, mirato ad una elaborazione iterativa che ha
permesso il progressivo ottenimento di dati elaborati con un crescente livello di qualità. Il
DPC costituisce parte integrante dello strumento, è responsabile per le operazioni in volo di
LFI acquisisce tutta la telemetria tecnica e scientifica della missione ed i dati ausiliari e
definisce procedure e macro-comandi per poter modificare ed ottimizzare la configurazione
dello strumento nella fase operativa. Il DPC è inoltre responsabile della fase di riduzione
dati, dall’analisi della telemetria alla consegna ad ESA dei prodotti finali della missione:
serie temporali calibrate e prive di effetti sistematici, mappe del cielo nelle bande di
frequenza LFI con calibrazione astrometrica e fotometrica, mappe a tutto cielo delle
componenti astrofisiche principali, cataloghi delle radio-sorgenti identificate e spettro di
potenza della radiazione di fondo cosmico (CMB). Infine, prima del lancio della missione, il
DPC ha avuto l’incarico di produrre dati che possano simulare realisticamente il
comportamento dello strumento in volo, e di supportare le operazioni di test a terra dello
strumento nelle varie fasi. Il DPC di LFI è stato sottoposto con successo a sette review ESA,
l’ultima svoltasi subito dopo la fase di CPV (Commissioning Performance Verification) nel
mese di Agosto 2009 piu’ due successive legate alla verifica della qualità dei prodotti resi
pubblici (2012 e 2014).
L’attività svolta dal sottoscritto per il progetto PLANCK è articolata nei seguenti punti:
a. Level 1 DPC manager con il compito del controllo implementazione e test dell’intero
livello1. Tale livello è il primo strato di software che entra in contatto con i dati che
pervengono direttamente dal Mission Operation Center (MOC). I compiti principali
sono di verificare che lo strumento LFI stia lavorando in condizioni ideali (in caso
contrario il livello 1 dovrà fornire al MOC le procedure necessarie alla modifiche del
caso) attraverso l’analisi della telemetria di House Keeping; di verificare che i dati
scientifici siano della qualità attesa attraverso l’analisi della telemetria scientifica; di
preparare i dati scientifici correlandoli con le informazioni ausiliare (calibrazioni,
trasformazioni del tempo, posizioni ecc..) per il livello 2 che si occuperà di un’analisi
scientifica più accurata.
b. Integration DPC manager con il compito di integrare i diversi moduli della pipeline
di riduzione dei dati scientifici. Poiché il consorzio LFI di Planck è composto da
diverse istituzioni di diversa nazionalità è stato necessario stabilire delle regole di
sviluppo e test di modo che i vari moduli, sviluppati dai diversi istituti, possano
essere armonicamente integrati in una unica pipeline il cui risultato finale sarà
l’estrazione dei parametri cosmologici e la realizzazione delle mappe del cielo a
diverse frequenze
c. Rappresentante italiano per LFI all’interno del P.G.S.S.G. (Planck Ground Segment
System Engeneering Group) che definisce le procedure di controllo ed operazione
del satellite Planck oltre alle varie interfacce (ICD) fra LFI e HFI ed i vari segmenti
di terra.
d. DPC Manager deputy con il compito di coadiuvare l’attività del DPC Manager e
coordinare i contributi al DPC apportati dagli istituti affiliati.
e. Nominato DPC Manager da Nazzareno Mandolesi (P.I. del Progetto PLANCK LFI)
nel corso del 2005 e quindi responsabile dell’intera pipeline di analisi dati, sia dal
punto di vista dello sviluppo che da quello delle operazioni, e della definizione di
tutte le interfacce di comunicazione fra i vari elementi del progetto Planck. Come
responsabile ho il compito di organizzare/gestire il lavoro di circa un centinaio di
sviluppatori, controllarne i risultati e riferire al Planck Science Team (di cui faccio
parte) e ad ESA l’avanzamento. Come DPCM ho la responsabilità di accettare e
firmare la documentazione descrittiva delle varie interfacce assumendomene la
responsabilità implementativa ed operazionale.
Tralasciando l’importanza scientifica della missione Planck, la parte innovativa di questa
attività da un punto di vista tecnologico riguarda la realizzazione di un vero e proprio
segmento di terra scientifico, il che combina gli aspetti di gestione ed elaborazione dati con
quelli di controllo dello strumento e di produzione dei risultati scientifici. Il tutto viene
realizzato mediante una collaborazione remota che coinvolge almeno duecento fra
cosmologi, strumentisti, informatici e tecnici sparsi in una dozzina di paesi europei ed
extraeuropei. Gli aspetti di integrazione delle informazioni e di coordinamento del lavoro
per la realizzazione del DPC e’ una vera e propria sfida tecnologica ed organizzativa, che
trascende il pur massiccio impiego di risorse di calcolo per la gestione e l’analisi di
un’enorme quantità di dati.
I primi risultati che abbiamo ottenuto dal satellite Planck sono stati di qualità eccellente ed
infatti abbiamo ottenuto una estensione del periodo nominale portando le operazioni sino a
Ottobre 2013. I primi prodotti pubblici (cataloghi delle sorgenti nelle frequenze di
osservazione di planck) sono stati rilasciati il 15 Gennaio 2011 insieme alla prima serie di
articoli scientifici (27). Nel 2013 i dati basati sul periodo nominale (solo in temperatura)
sono stati resi pubblici con un ulteriore set di articoli scientifici (circa 50). Nel corso del
2015 abbiamo reso pubblici i primi dati che coprono l’intero periodo di osservazione (4
anni) sia in temperatura che polarizzazione, gli articoli che descrivo questo set sono stati
sottomessi e stiamo aspettando le risposte dei vari referee. Infine prevediamo una ulteriore
release (l’ultima) nel 2016 che farà riferimento sempre al periodo totale di osservazione
(quattro anni) ma con un miglior controllo delle sistematiche, specialmente in
polarizzazione, ed una piu’ raffinata pipeline di calibrazione.
Le attività sopra descritte hanno portato alla scrittura ed all’accettazione, in qualità di Data
Processing Manager, di diverse decine di documenti di progetto, riportati nella lista delle
pubblicazioni, che sono stati parte essenziale delle varie review ESA a cui siamo stati
sottoposti.
4. X-shooter è uno strumento di seconda generazione per VLT; è stato approvato al Council
Meeting di Dicembre 2003. X-shooter è uno spettrografo a tre bracci in grado di coprire un
ampio intervallo spettrale (300-1900 nm, dall’UV fino alla banda H) simultaneamente. Il
consorzio Italiano costituito da diversi osservatori (Trieste, Milano, Catania, Palermo) ha la
responsabilità della costruzione del braccio visibile, dell’implementazione di tutto il
software necessario alla gestione dello strumento nel suo complesso ed infine
dell’integrazione dello stesso. X-shooter ha concluso la fase di disegno preliminare (2005)
ed ha passato con successo la FDR (Final Design Review) nel corso del 2006. Il sottoscritto
è stato inserito sia nella progettazione che nella realizzazione delle interfacce utente e degli
observation blocks necessari all’osservazione.
5. GRID L’unione delle conoscenze sul progetto PLANCK con la GRID ha portato alla
partecipazione del sottoscritto al progetto PLANCK-GRID dove il software di simulazione
dei dati attesi da PLANCK è stato mappato con successo sulla griglia dimostrando la
fattibilità di distribuire software complesso su centri di calcolo distribuiti geograficamente.
Il risultato di questo successo è stato l’approvazione della proposta a EGEE (Enabling Grids
for E-science in Europe) su Simulations for the ESA/Planck mission.
6. Progetti Archivi Generali L’esperienza acquisita durante il periodo trascorso al TNG mi ha
dato l’opportunità di partecipare al progetto pilota per gli archivi astronomici Nazionali,
sviluppando la pipeline di riduzione dati acquisiti con LRS in modalità imaging. Inoltre ho
partecipando allo studio di eventuali relazioni non lineari fra la qualità delle immagini stesse
e parametri di telemetria del telescopio attraverso l’uso del database del TNG in
collaborazione con l’Università di Napoli.
7. TNG Nel periodo 1997-2001 sono stato sotto contratto con il CNAA (consorzio Nazionale
per l’Astronomia e l’Astrofisica) come responsabile del sistema di controllo del Telescopio
Nazionale Galileo (TNG), del sistema di archiviazione e come astronomo di supporto dello
spettrografo a bassa risoluzione LRS (Low resolution Spectrograph). Anche dopo aver
trasferito le conoscenze acquisite al personale che mi avrebbe sostituito, l’interesse nei
confronti del TNG non è scemato dando luogo a collaborazioni sia scientifiche che
tecnologiche. Ho infatti collaborato all’acquisizione ed analisi dei dati per la produzione di
alcuni articoli scientifici, dallo studio delle controparti ottiche dei GRB allo studio della
rotazione differenziale di regioni Hα, ed infine all’analisi delle proprietà di polarizzazione
della luce ai fuochi Nasmyth di un telescopio alt-azimutale. Successivamente ho collaborato
al disegno ed implementazione dell’aggiornamento del sistema di controllo del TNG in
modo da renderlo più moderno e flessibile.
8. GSCII Il progetto GSCII (Guide Star Catalogne II) ha prodotto un catalogo di stelle di
valore inestimabile in diversi colori completo sino alla 19 magnitudine partendo da plates
digitalizzati (POSS II ecc…). La mia partecipazione in tale progetto risale al periodo 19951997 dove, sotto contratto dell’Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino, sviluppai in
collaborazione con il CASB di STScI parte della pipeline di riduzione e creazione del
catalogo (precisamente l’algoritmo di classificazione automatica, gli algoritmi di centraggio
parametrici e non parametrici ed il software necessario alla stima della qualità su basi
statistiche).
9. Attività didattico-divulgativa si articola in diversi ambiti. Ho partecipato alle varie attività
divulgative dell’Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste, durante eventi di particolare interesse
per il pubblico, contribuendo con conferenze tematiche (opposizione di Marte, transito di
Venere, ecc..). Inoltre ho partecipato al progetto “Le stelle vanno a scuola”. Tale progetto si
è proposto di sfruttare la rete telematica Internet permettendo a qualsiasi istituto (università,
scuole superiori o medie) di effettuare una reale osservazione astronomica in remoto. A tale
scopo è stata costruita una nuova stazione osservativa (situata presso la succursale di
Basovizza dell’OAT), equipaggiata con un telescopio Celestron C14, camera CCD e
telescopio solare (per permettere sia osservazioni diurne che notturne) totalmente
computerizzata. Gli studenti presso le sedi scolastiche, sfruttando l’application sharing via
Internet, potranno controllare remotamente e in modo indipendente il telescopio, acquisire
immagini e dialogare in videoconferenza con un astronomo che si prende cura di spiegare il
perché di determinate operazioni ed il significato scientifico delle immagini acquisite. Il
progetto ha terminato la fase di prova durante il 2003 ed è diventato interamente operativo
riscuotendo un ottimo successo con tutte le scuole Triestine che vi hanno aderito. È chiaro
che l’utilizzo di Internet estende l’usabilità del progetto potenzialmente a livello sia
nazionale che internazionale. Come ultima attività divulgativa ho partecipato, facendo parte
prima della giuria nazionale e poi di quella internazionale, alle olimpiadi nazionali di
Astronomia e di conseguenza a quelle Internazionali addestrando i partecipanti Italiani e
valutando le prove svolte durante le gare.
