SANDRA TORNBERG
FADM EDUCATION CHAIR ELECTED AS FIRST
WOMAN PRESIDENT OF THE IACS
History was made on January 26, 2016 as Sandra (Sandy) Tornberg was elected by the Italian American Cultural Society
(IACS) Board as President. This marks first time a woman has
been elected President since the inception of the IACS.
Sandy is fluent in Italian in both speaking and writing. She
graduated from the University of Michigan taking University
level Italian classes throughout her time there.
Sandy has been a participating member of the Federazione
Abruzzese del Michigan (FADM) since she joined the organization .She has been our Membership Chair, and a Director on
the FADM Board. She is currently our Education Chair responsible for the administration
our Tuition Reimbursement Program, our College Scholarship program and our Wayne
State Language immersion Scholarship administered by Wayne State University. She is
also active with WSU in the Italian Language Department supporting their education and
cultural activates.
Besides being involved in the many social activities at the Center, she has chaired the
Craft show with increasing success the last five (5) years. She also chaired the committee
to design and implement the current IACS website, and is a regular contributor. Sandy
writes for the IACS newspaper the Italian American for both the English and Italian sections, maintains the IACS and the FADM Facebook pages and has managed the IACS
food booth at the Festa Italiana for the last two years. The list can go on and on. “Bringing
the community together is a large part of my focus…” she said, “and it begins with the
Italian American Cultural Center. It is and should be the epicenter of the Italian community. I will do my best to make that happen in my term as President.”
DID YOU KNOW!!??
1. This Roman emperor presided over the completion of the Roman Coliseum, destroyed
Jerusalem in 70 A.D, and built the famous arch still standing in Rome. Who is he?
2. This activity, considered both a game and a method of making decisions, was introduced
by the ancient Romans—most notably Julius Caesar. Referred to a “caput aut
navis” (ship or chief) by the Romans, this activity was widely used for civil and criminal
disputes. Name this activity. (Hint: used before football games)

STEWARDHIP:
Federation activities are fun, entertaining, and cultural. We look forward to enjoying the fellowship and, what else, the food everyone prepares for
our fabulous potlucks and get togethers. We enjoy the videos, the music and the stories and histories of our family trees and ancestral homes in Italy.
The events seem to flow together effortlessly. This is true because of the members who have joined in and become part of a committee to put an
event together. Joining a committee is fun and rewarding. When you have the power of many the tasks are minor and the job is done with ease.
When you renew your Membership for 2016 be sure to indicate which committee you are interested in and your phone number. The Chairman of
the committee will call you for meetings. Remember, we can do more, we can do much, and we can do much more. All we need is everyone to do

~L’albero~
DI PASQUAROSA (ROSETTA) DI LORENZO
State abbattendo
l’albero.
Nessuna pieta.
Quest’albero
era ancora mio padre,
era ancora ma madre.
Nell’angolo piu timido
del nostro giardino
era vivente cortina
agli occhi curiosi
e sfuggenti dei vicini.
Era la resistnza al vento,
il luogo d’amore
di mille uccellini.
Era il canto del primo mattino.
Era il risveglio del sole
che vi si buttva rapito
a trafiggere i rami maestosi
con trasparaenza di raggi infiniti,
tramando ricami di luce
sul verde cupo delle fronde.
E l’odore, l’odore di pino
mai piu fino a me giungera.
Via stroncata.
La morte e li
nel focolare accanto,
il tarlo e dentro la mente
e il cuore ingabbiato,
incapaci di sentire,
non fa che morire.
Chi avrà custodito
l’amore
avrà piantato
‘lAlbero Nuovo.

-ABRUZZO HERITAGE~ Ignazio Silone ~
Ignazio Silone (Italian: 1 May 1900 – 22 August 1978) was the pseudonym of Secondino Tranquilli, an
Italian author and politician.
He was born in the town of Pescina in the Abruzzo region and lost many family members, including his
mother, in the 1915 Avezzano earthquake. His father had died in 1911. Silone joined the Young Socialists
group of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), rising to be their leader.
He was a founding member of the breakaway Communist Party of Italy (PCd'I) in 1921, and became one of
its covert leaders during the Fascist regime. Ignazio's brother Romolo Tranquilli was arrested in 1928 for
being a member of the PCI, and he died in prison in 1931 as a result of the severe beatings he received.
Italian historians Dario Biocca and Mauro Canali found documents which, they claimed, 'proved' that Silone
Silone in the 1920’s.
acted as an informant for the Fascist police from 1919 until 1930. The two historians published the results of
their research in a work titled L'informatore. Silone, i comunisti e la polizia. In spite of bitter controversy in the
Italian press, Biocca's and Canali's work proved to be substantiated and was reviewed in a positive light by theLondon Review of
Books, The Times Literary Supplement, The New Yorker, The Nation, New Left Review and others.
A 2005 biography by Biocca also includes documents showing Silone's involvement with the American intelligence (the OSS) during and after the
World War, ultimately suggesting that Silone's political stands (as well as extensive literary work) should be reconsidered in light of a more complex personality and political engagements.
In his later years.
Ignazio Silone was married to Darina Laracy, an Irish student of Italian literature. He died in Geneva, Switzerland in 1978.

NEWS FROM THE ABRUZZO REGION
2016-01-25
(REGFLASH)
- Pescara, 25 gen.
Insieme a queste

13.30. Domenica dalle 16.00 alle 19.30.

PRESIDENTS CORNER
Reflections of our times:
Chi Siamo Noi.
As President of the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan (FADM), I often speak to people about their
heritage and background always interjecting the subject of Abruzzo and Membership to the FADM when
possible. What if find startling is that even when people know their family is from the Abruzzo Region,
they don’t know about the rich culture or traditions that come from there.
Enzo Paglia
In the Abruzzo Heritage section of our newsletter, La Voce d’Abruzzo, we highlight just how rich and our
heritage is. From Dean Martin and Perry Como, as our anchor celebrities, to Tommy LaSorda in sports and Ignazion Silone
and Mario Fratti in literature and theatre to Madonna in music.
As a member of the FADM make sure your familiarize yourself with these well known personalities and be ready to let people and family know that your Region has produced so many of the worlds leading artists and scientists. This is particularly
true to let our children and grandchildren know. If they ask you, “Dad where is our family from in Italy?” Let them know.
Who are we? (Chi siamo noi?) We are artists, scientists, doctors, musicians, playwrights, theologians, that have made a difference in the world; and can still make a difference if we but carry on our traditions and family values.
