Mi turba… 10/31/1961 What a merry disaster! People are drinking, singing, from underneath the table an obscene, heavily made-up little mulatto pederast sits down on my knees. He disgusts me and yet he’s touching. He disturbs me. 22-1-62 Giulietta ed io ospiti in casa di Picasso, si sta benissimo, si mangia e si beve in allegria. Tutto è semplice, famigliare, antico, che pace, che conforto! 1/22/1962 Giulietta and I are guests in Picasso’s house, we’re really enjoying ourselves, everyone’s eating and drinking together happily. Everything is simple, familiar, rustic, what peacefulness, what pleasure! 12.65 Snickering, I propose that from now on we have lunch next to the large stone arch that contains my corpse. 1966 Lunch with Jung in the little piazza in a small Ligurian (or Swiss) town. Jung is a very handsome old man, what physical and intellectual vigor emanates from his robust farmer’s body, his gaze clear, acute, benevolently ironic! We’re eating spaghetti (Liliana’s there too), and we bite into one that’s the same strand and crosses all three plates. September 1967 “Timidity and death,” says the matronly signora seated in front of me, “are the same thing to Fellini.” Giulietta is seated on my right. Caprioli is on my left, on the other side of the table. 1977 C.M. Il dubbio mi angosciava anche perché era apparsa ora la Lea contro un paesaggio marino che sghignazzando mi diceva imperiosamente così: TU SOLO SAI COSA SIGNIFICA QUELLA IMMAGINE! 1977 C. M. (but was it her?), much more robust, like a true woman warrior, put N. and Lea’s heads on a small, set table. I couldn’t decide if the two heads were real, in other words truly decapitated from the two women’s bodies, or perfect rubber and plastic copies. This doubt tormented me because Lea suddenly appeared against a seaside backdrop, snickering and telling me imperiously: YOU AND YOU ALONE KNOW WHAT THAT IMAGE MEANS! Dream from June 3, 1977 A female hand resting on a jar of live worms in front of a cube of glass containing a turtle that immediately started swallowing the worms one after the other. I saw them disappear, still alive, down into its dark throat. 1-1978 NEMMENO UNO NE HO MANGIATO! AH SÌ! UNO! 1.1978 I DIDN’T EVEN EAT A SINGLE ONE! AH, YES! ONE! YES, YES, IT’S TRUE, BUT IT WAS JUST ONE! (Laughing happily). Do you hear her? Can we trust her? MAIORE shakes his head as if to say that I’m right to doubt the veracity of the woman selling live little men. DISEGNI DAL LIBRO DEI SOGNI 1980 PER TE LA PREPARO QUESTA SFOGLIA DI 100 UOVA. SOLO PER TE!! Per me??? 1980 I’LL MAKE THIS 100-EGG PUFF PASTRY FOR YOU. FOR YOU AND YOU ALONE! For me??? 12-9-80 SEI TROPPO GIOVANE TROPPO PICCOLO PER QUESTE COSE! In tre? In quattro? Lui e altri due!” [NON L’AVEVO MAI VISTA COSÌ POTENTE SPAVALDA SICURA… ERA ENORME] 09/12/80 YOU’RE TOO YOUNG, TOO SMALL FOR THESE THINGS! TRY WITH FOUR FIRST, LET’S SEE HOW YOU DO AND THEN WE’LL TALK AGAIN! (A little earlier, he had said to Elvi in reference to a joke of mine: “He (Fellini) says that even in bed with someone doing is believing. With how many? Three? Four? Him and two others!”) [I’D NEVER SEEN HER SO POWERFUL, FEARLESS, BOLD… SHE WAS ENORMOUS.] DREAM from October 10, 1980 It seems that Franco Rossi and I are supposed to have dinner with Claudio Martelli in a squalid little restaurant. There he is, seated at the table, waiting for us.He’s a little thinner than he looks in photographs, more haggard. As Rossi and I are sitting down, Martelli vomits up a horrendous squid and starts stretching it with his hands, moving it, squeezing it, palpating it, caressing it, blowing into it and making it get bigger and bigger. The monstrous octopus (Is it an octopus, or is it Martelli’s stomach turned inside-out?) gets bigger, grows taut, Martelli sticks dark grapes between its flabby protuberances and transparent bubbles. Every once in a while Martelli ceases manhandling the thing as if he were waiting for us to rip a piece off and eat it. He seems like an extraordinary expert, a specialist who knows just how one is supposed to eat these mollusks. But we don’t have the courage to so much as touch that horrendous mess, and Martelli keeps on massaging. The show is as fascinating as it is disgusting. Dream from 11/20/1980 At the theater (the Valle?), where Totò’s show has finished and the entire audience is going up to the forestage to applaud him and enjoy his last pirouettes. Giulietta and I want to applaud him too, show him all our admiration and gratitude, we even climb up onto the forestage and are immediately followed by the other smiling, festive audience members. But Totò doesn’t appear. Instead Wanda Osiris comes out, already dressed to go home. I ask her: “Signora, where’s Totò? Everybody’s expecting him!” SIGNORA OSIRIS, ISN’T TOTÒ GOING TO COME OUT? He’s left, signor Fellini. You’ll find him at the restaurant. I’m sorry for all these nice people who were hoping to honor him… Why don’t you try and convince him to come back? I go out to look for Totò and find him in a little restaurant, eating alone. They’re waiting for you! You can’t let your audience down like this! Please come, I beg you… Oh, alright. Let’s go. Leaving the restaurant together I realize that we’re in Rimini. It’s nighttime. The big open clearing of beaten earth where the Malatesta Family rock lies is completely deserted. How long will it take us to make it all the way back to the theater? Will the audience be patient enough to wait that long? Fortunately a cab drives by. I stop it and we get in. But the entrance to the theater is packed with the crowds waiting for Totò. Totò hides inside his overcoat. I decide to try and get in through the actors’ entrance… The alleyway that leads to the actors’ entrance is even more packed with admirers waiting for the comic. It seems impossible to make any headway in such a crowd. And the dream ends with this vision and with this question: “Will I be able to get Totò into the theater, onto the forestage and thank the enthusiastic audience that is patiently waiting for him?”
