NEWSLETTERRARITYNo.11‐04.2014 pubblicazione trimestrale / quarterly publication L I F E 10 N A T / I T / 000239 ERADICATE INVASIVE LOUISIANA RED SWAMP AND PRESERVE NATIVE WHITE CLAWED CRAYFISH IN FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA ERADICAZIONE DEL GAMBERO ROSSO DELLA LOUISIANA E PROTEZIONE DEI GAMBERI DI FIUME DEL FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA LA NEWSLETTER RARITY Il progetto Life RARITY ha iniziato il 2014 con molte iniziative e attività in parte avviate già nell’anno precedente e in parte totalmente nuove. Life TEN, Life CRAINAT, ecc …). Li troviamo in numerosi toponimi (Gambellara, Vicenza; Gambara, Brescia; Gambaro, Piacenza; Gamberana, Mantova … ecc …), cognomi (Gamberi, Gambari, Gambarini, Gamberini, Gamberucci, ecc …), nello stemma comunale di Amaro (Udine). THE RARITY NEWSLETTER The Life RARITY project started the year 2014 with a lot of initiatives and activities which had partially began during the previous year 2013 and in part were totally new. It participated in the second edition of the training course for teachers titled “ECOSISTEMA FVG La scuola incontra l’ambiente ed il territorio” (FVG ECOSYSTEM The school meets the environment end the territory). It has been and it is actually being hosted (with its own aquaria showing living spoecimens of the Louisiana red swamp crayfish) by the great exhibition BIODIVERSITAS organized by the Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale of udine in the prestigious site at the exChurch of San Francesco in Udine downtown. 2 On April the collaboration among RARITY and the Civil Defence of FVG has been renovated during an evening meeting at the “Vecchia Pescheria” in Marano Lagunare followed by a field demonstration at the “darsena comunale” of Muzzana del Turgnano. The FVG Civil Defence has been so much sensitive and effective in receiving and endorsing the message about the risk represented by the red swamp crayfish for the stability of banks and headland access paths, and about the need for a conscious monitoring of soils along rivers and lagoons. RARITY hosted a student (Gregor Gabalin) from the high school “Il Tagliamento” of Spilimbergo (Udine) for his 40-hour training about the project themes. A special issue of the important international journal “Ecology, Ethology & Evolution” published a review by the RARITY team from the University of Florence about the biological invasions and the threat they represent for human health. During the 49th edition of AGRIEST in Udine it has been presented to the public and the press the new number of the Quaderni Scientifici (Journal of Freshwater Biology). The number is titled “Introduzione di specie alloctone e problematiche legate alla conservazione degli ecosistemi dulciacquicoli” (The introduction of alien species and the problems related to the conservation of freshwater ecosystems) and rings to publishing the “Quaderni” after a a long pause which lasted nine years. The new number collects the original communications and the works of the ETP meeting “Il gambero rosso della Louisiana: minaccia per la biodiversità ed il sistema idraulico dei nostri fiumi” (The Louisiana red swamp crayfish: threat to biodiversity and the hydraulic system of our rivers), which took place on May 2010 and which started the process of interrelations among researchers, institutions, operators leading to the formulation and realization of the RARITY project. Dissemination activities among schools (at the Ariis Aquarium, at the primary schools “Marco Polo” in San Dona di Piave and “Edmondo De Amicis” in Musile di Piave, at the high school “Nicolò Tron” in Schio, etc .), and activities of networking with other projects (Life TEN, Life CRAINAT, etc.) have continued. On February it has been held the “2nd seminary for forest guards and other operators dealing with the surveillance of the fauna and the territory” which achieved a resounding success from the numerous participants. Piero Giulianini (University of Trieste) has been interviewed by the important national newspaper “La Stampa” which published a long and well documented article about the red swamp crayfish and the problems related to the biological invasions. On next June RARITY will be present at the meeting of SIPI (the Italian Society of Ichthyological Pathology) where i twill bring to the attention of specialized veterinarians the issues about aphanomicosis and the processes of bioaccumulation of pollutants and phytotoxins associated to Procambarus clarkii. On March it took place the meeting for the “training upgrade” of the ETP volunteer personnel. ETP fishing guards and collaborators in fact made it possible the collection of a large quantity of data and information representing a unique dataset of this kind. The Region FVG has become a true “experimental field” which leaded to the creation, in-depth analysis and elaboration of strongly significant knowledge and data about the distribution, the genetics, the taxonomy of the native crayfish species and about several different aspects of the biology and the ecology of native and alien river crayfish. From the first months of 2014 the main page of the RARITY website shows the new button “WARNINGS” linking to the recently constructed website www.gamberialieni.divulgando.eu. This website aloows for the waring of the red swamp crayfish by means of innovative and simple and effective tools. Before the Final Conference (scheduled on November) RARITY is engaged into the preparation of two important meetings, targeting the stakeholders (fishermen associations, fishing traders and merchants, petshops, environmental associations, etc.) and the public administrations, respectively. The first meeting will take place in Udine on May 20. 3 The second one in Pordenone on June 19. The “crayfish” theme doesn’t seem to attract so much the attention of the public opinion and sometimes of the works personnel too. Neverthless river crayfish are definitely part of the culture and the traditions characterizing the communities of Friuli Venezia Giulia and of the whole Italian region. We can find them in several toponyms (Gambellara, Vicenza; Gambara, Brescia; Gambaro, Piacenza; Gamberana, Mantova … ecc …), in surnames (Gamberi, Gambari, Gambarini, Gamberini, Gamberucci, ecc …), n the coat of arms of the municipality of Amaro (Udine). Crayfish are a Christian symbol of resurrection and the subject of frescoes and sculptures decorating many churches along the whole alpine arch. Only in Friuli we can count five “crayfish festivals” having a very long tradition (sometimes we can go in the past until the year 1300). Sometimes we are not fully conscious about this but the river crayfish are part of our naturalistic and more deeply identitary assets. Because of the above mentioned reasons RARITY hopes stakeholders and public administrations will be present to the meetings and will bring their own contribution and vision of the problem comparing their ideas and points of view with the experience and statements of other involved actors. Superato il controllo lo stato della segnalazione cambia da “in attesa” a “validato”. 4 management team with a connection to a database and consists of two different interfaces accessible from the Internet. The first interface is directed at the citizen who connects to http://gamberialieni.divulgando.eu/ via smartphone or computer. It shows the public site which can be inquired about the project providing information about the distinctive features of the Louisiana red swamp crayfish - Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) - and about reports from other users (including a list of warning points on a GIS map). This interface also allow for entering the simple procedure to specify the sighting characters. Sending a message is simple and intuitive and it is done by filling out a form indicating the number of observed individuals (one, a few or many individuals), the location of the sighting and its geographical coordinates, a photo of the observed individual/s, the observer’s name and an email address. These two last fields are not compulsory but if compiled for statistical purposes they allow the submitter to receive an email alert when the report is published online. If the form is filled out from a laptop or desktop computer the geographical coordinates of the location can be inserted via the mapping tool or typing them in via the keyboard. If the form is filled out using a smartphone or a tablet equipped with GPS then the coordinates of the geographical location of the user appear automatically but can still be corrected manually or via the map. At the end of the record submission procedure, if the user has filled in the email field, he/she will receive an initial notification that the record has been submitted correctly. The second interface is addressed to technical and scientific personnel. It can be accessed through authentication with username and password and allows the management staff to reject or validate the messages submitted by users and to enter new records, modify all the site content and interact with users. The messages sent are displayed only within the management system and are not on the public site if they have not yet been validated by the scientific assessment. Citizen science computer tools in the census of invasive alien species Alessio Mereu, Rodolfo Riccamboni & Chiara Boscarol Divulgando Srl - Sistemi Informativi Multimediali Trieste www.divulgando.eu The Computers and the Internet allow direct and effective communication between the research community and individual citizens. This active collaboration comes under the definition of “citizen science”, a term used to denote the active participation of citizens in scientific research, particularly through the collection and submission of structured information (data). The exponential growth of internet access, the daily use of social networks and the growing attention to active participation in shared projects of public interest have certainly favoured the creation of innovative tools for citizen science. With these tools researchers can catalogue and manage large amounts of geographical or analytical data, with actions that in terms of cost and collection time would be unsustainable if carried out only by the workers on the project. This having been said, data collection that follows these procedures needs scientific validation that is performed by means of computers. From these considerations we developed the “Sistema di segnalazione del gambero rosso della Louisiana” or “The Louisiana red swamp crayfish reporting system”, a citizen science tool The validation process involves the verification of the content posted with particular attention to the geographical coordinates and the photography. Passing through this check the status changes from “in attesa” (“waiting for validation”) to “validato” (“validated”). Only at this point does the message become visible on the public site and the developed for the Life Rarity Project (Life 10 NAT/IT/000239) and designed to allow the ordinary citizen to report this invasive and dangerous alien species. The warning system is based on a website controlled by a 5 user receives an email notification of the publication with a link to the detailed file. The analysis of the data received takes place via an export function as a comma-separated value (.csv) file integrated into the data management system. The reporting system has been developed in a modular structure that allows the implementation of multiple functions depending on the scope of the application with the aim of facilitating the collection of data for the purposes of scientific research, statistics, and public utilities.
