SEA-BOTTOM SEDIMENTS FROM THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN: QUARTZ GRAIN SURFACE FEATURES STUDY STUDIO DELLE STRUTTURE SUPERFICIALI DEI GRANULI DI QUARZO NEI SEDIMENTI MARINI DELLO STRETTO DI MAGELLANO L. SOGGETTI (1) ABSTRACT RIASSUNTO A study of the quartz grain surface features of seabottom sediments from the Strait of Magellan, southern Chile, was performed. The aim of this work was to improve our understanding of the provenance and the processes of transport and distribution of siliciclastic sediments, and, in addition, to verify the effectiveness of this technique (still debated) when applied to a basin, like the Strait of Magellan, where different means of terrigenous supply interplay. About 130 representative quartz grains were collected and analyzed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), which revealed that they had undergone a sedimentary evolution mainly in glacio-fluvial, aeolian and marine environments. The small number of quartz grains analyzed did not allow us to draw definitive conclusions about the relevance of the methodology for discriminating the different sedimentary environments in the Strait of Magellan. Nevertheless, several quartz grain surface features previously described in the literature were observed, and these support the observations derived from previous grain-size and compositional investigations of the same sediments. Lastly, quartz grain surface feature analysis was confirmed as being a useful tool in verifying the importance of the aeolian transport of sediments (which is difficult to recognize using other techniques).
