cinese di 3.000 anni fa, oppure come
“prezioso amuleto” in uno dei più antichi
testi sacri dei Bramini indiani, l’Atharvaveda di 2.500 anni orsono. La stessa
che venne offerta al Creatore dall’Elemento Acqua in atto di ringraziamento secondo i poemi epici dell’antica India
Ramayana e Mahābhārata - subito dopo la creazione. La medesima figlia del
mare menzionata su un obelisco della
Ninive del 1.000 avanti Cristo; obelisco
celebrante a futura memoria e ad esempio il ricco tributo versato al re assiro e

PERLA NATURALE:
■ In guerra, il solo pensiero che un giorno i tuoi commilitoni, schierati sul campo per l’appello, avrebbero potuto rispondere “presente!” a una sola voce,
alla chiamata del tuo nome, t’induceva
a licenziosi scaramantici gesti: era quello, infatti, l’estremo saluto (non il gesto
scaramantico) reso ai caduti per la Patria durante l’ultima azione della serie.
Non è questo il caso per quel raro gioiello del mare ch’è la perla naturale. Risuonino, dunque, grida di giubilo e di gaudio, perché Margarita è ancora viva e tra
noi. Sì, amici, la stessa Margarita citata
soggetto in causa, ebbene sappiate che
non v’è più la sola radiografia a raggi X
a confortare l’assunto, ma pure la microtomografia a raggi X. Con tutte quelle
perle Keshi che hanno ultimamente invaso il mercato, è infatti il caso di riuscire a stabilire la natura e l’origine della
nostra perla con sicurezza, data in questo caso la frequente incertezza diagnostica della radiografia nel discernere accuratamente il tipo di struttura interna.
La microtomografia, d’altro canto, fornisce un’indagine e una ricostruzione tridimensionale della struttura e delle carat-
commisurato alla sua possanza da congrua quantità d’oro, d’argento, di perle
e d’altre gemme ancora. Quelle “perle
che, come altrettanti occhi, riflettevano
gli sguardi raggianti come il cielo”, montate negli orecchini donati a Penelope
dal procio Euridamo, stando all’Odissea
di Omero. Ovvero la pernula donata da
Giulio Cesare a una delle sue innumerevoli amanti (forse Servilia, madre di
Bruto?) dietro corresponsione di sei milioni di sesterzi, pari a circa centomila
dollari del giorno d’oggi. Non, quindi, il
prodotto di secrezione d’un mollusco
le d’acqua salata a portata di mano perché altro non si vede in giro o esposto nelle vetrine o avvolto nei rotoli del
fornitore ovvero accatastato in mazzette
- avevamo finanche perso memoria dell’esistenza delle vere Margaritae. Finché,
come balsamica essenza, non è sgocciolata dall’alambicco della rassegna
stampa la buona novella:
• Che, mentre la crisi economica mondiale va imponendo drastiche cure dimagranti ai volumi di vendita delle
Margaritae coltivate, quelle naturali, di
Margaritae, stanno vivendo – alle aste e
ne (accoppiamento e armonizzazione).
Una rarità, una chicca;
• Che, sempre così per discorrere, la
Christie’s ha in carnet: per 350.000 dollari uno strepitoso paio d’orecchini di
naturali rosa a goccia da 16-17mm ben
guarnite di diamanti; un filo di multicolori
per 230.000 $ (sempre US); un paio
d’orecchini targati Cartier con diamanti
per (US) dollari 160.000.
Se le cifre coinvolte vi paiono dovere essere giustificate da una comprova di veridicità, relativamente alla naturalità del
teristiche interne della perla in esame –
tramite assorbimento ai raggi X- con risoluzione dell’ordine dei pochi micron.
Il laboratorio svizzero SSEF, nel dichiarare d’aver instaurato quest’ultimo test in
regime di routine per le perle al proprio
esame, è quindi in grado di ben differenziare le perle naturali da quelle senza nucleo, spontaneamente formatesi all’interno di un’ostrica d’acqua salata altrimenti impegnata nella produzione d’una
perla coltivata, che vanno sotto il nome
di Keshi, appunto.
E così giustizia sia resa a “Margarita la

Vera”, affinché trovi compimento l’assegnazione evangelica di simbolo di verità
ad essa conferita dalle parole del Maestro: “Il Regno dei Cieli è simile ad un
mercante che va in cerca di perle preziose: trovatane una di grande pregio, va,
vende quanto ha e la compra” (Matteo
13:45-6) e ancora: “Non date le cose
sante ai cani e non gettate le vostre perle ai porci” (Matteo 7:6). Ecco in quale
considerazione la nostra era tenuta, fin
dagli antichi tempi. Rallegriamoci dunque se è ancora tra di noi e conserva
quell’aura di preziosità che – è vero – la
tiene sì discosta dalle tasche dei più, ma
va comunque a nutrire il nostro bisogno
sempre vivo di continuità e perseveranza del mito.

tioned as a “precious jewel” in a Chinese
dictionary dating back some 3,000 years
and the “precious amulet” in one of the
oldest holy texts of Brahmin Indians, the
Atharvaveda from 2,500 years ago. The
same one that was offered to the Creator
by the Element Water as a sign of thanks,
according to the epic poems of ancient
India, Ramayana and Mahābhārata,
immediately after Creation. That same
daughter of the sea mentioned on an obelisk in Nineveh in 1,000 B.C. – the commemorative obelisk built, for future reference and as an example, to celebrate the
rich tribute paid to the Assyrian king, in
proportion with his congruous possessions and power: copious quantities of
gold, silver, pearls and yet other gems.
Those “pearls that, like so many eyes,
reflected joyful looks like the sky”, set
into the earrings given to Penelope by
one of her odious suitors, Euridamo, to
tural pearl, helped by the impoverishment of the historic pearl banks in the
Persian Gulf and their destruction by the
then growing traffic of oil to and from
the black gold wells along the coast. Accustomed as we are to considering the latter as the only saltwater pearls within our
reach, because no others are to be seen
out and about or on display in windows
or wrapped in suppliers’ rolls or stacked
in bundles, we had even forgotten about
the existence of the real Margaritae. Until, like balsamic essence, the good news
dripped from the still of press folders:
• That, while the world economic crisis is
imposing drastic slimming cures on the
sales volumes of cultured Margaritae,
natural Margaritae are enjoying (at auctions and dedicated fairs) a big-style revival, as a consequence of their uniqueness
and rarity.
• That the big auction houses have for a
really amazing pair of earrings in pink
drop natural pearls measuring 16-17
mm in diameter with a flourish of diamonds; a beautiful strand of multi-colour pearls for $230,000 (US dollars
again); a pair of Cartier diamond earrings for US$ 160,000.
If the figures involved seem to call for
justification by a cross-check of the
jewels’ authenticity, in terms of the naturalness of the objects in question, let
me tell you that X-rays are no longer
the only way of ascertaining this; there
is also X-ray microtomography. With all
those Keshi pearls that have recently invaded the market, it is in fact a good
idea to firmly establish the nature and
origin of our pearl, given in this case the
frequent diagnostic uncertainty of Xrays in accurately determining the kind
of internal structure.
Microtomography, on the other hand,
provides investigation and 3D reconstruction of the structure and internal
characteristics of the pearl under examination, through absorption of X-
rays, offering resolution down to just a
few microns. The SSEF Swiss laboratory, in declaring that it has installed
this latest test as routine for the pearls
it examines, is therefore well able to
differentiate natural pearls from those
without that nucleus that spontaneously forms inside a saltwater oyster
otherwise busy with the production
of a cultured peal, which are the ones
known as Keshi.
So justice is served for “Margarita la
Vera” enabling fulfilment of its evangelic assignment as a symbol of truth
by the words of the Maestro: “The
kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
looking for fine pearls: when he found
one of great value, he went away and
sold everything he had and bought it”
(Matthew 13:45-6) and again: “Do not
give dogs what is sacred; do not throw
your pearls to pigs” (Matthew 7:6).
This is how highly our pearl was considered even in ancient times. We must
therefore be happy it is still with us
and preserves that aura of preciousness that, it is true, keeps it out of the
reach of the majority, but does however fuel a still lively need for the legend to continue and last.

■ In war, the mere thought that one day
your comrades lined up on the field for
roll call might all answer “here!” as a single voice when your name was called out,
would lead you to make lewd gestures to
ward off bad luck. This in fact was the
extreme salute (not the lewd gestures, obviously) paid to those who died for their
homeland during the final battles. This
is not the case however for that rare
jewel from the sea, the natural pearl. Let
shouts of joy and glee ring out therefore
because Margarita is still alive and with
us. Yes friends, the same Margarita men-

given by Julius Caesar to one of his innumerable lovers (Servilia perhaps, mother
of Brutus?) on payment of six million sesterces, equal to around one hundred
thousand of today’s dollars. Not merely,
therefore, the product of secretion by a
saltwater mollusc of the Pinctada genus,
nucleated with the method fine-tuned by
the Japanese Mise, Nishikawa and Mikimoto at the start of the 1900s; not those
cultured pearls that Mikimoto brought to
the attention of the market in the twenties of the last century to replace the na-
