Marek Lach ’Remembrance accompanies people. We remain human as long as we remember. If we are to live, Idea we should live in love, not in hate. Reconciliation means being closer to other people, regardless of the differences connected with beliefs and nationalities’. RECONCILIATION. Professor Józef Szajna - a great artist, painter, stage designer, director, theatre scholar, professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, prisoner at concentration camps in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Author of the idea of building the ’Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation’ in Oświęcim – the City of Peace. The project of building the Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation in Oświęcim – the City of Peace, a concept originated by Professor Józef Szajna, is arousing more and more interest. This beautiful peace initiative is supported by numerous representatives of different faiths and religions as well as esteemed authorities from both the political and the scientific world. Former prisoners of KL Auschwitz consider building of the Mound their testament to the posterity and a message of reconciliation for world peace. After visiting the Place of Remembrance, KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, everyone will have the opportunity to take their stone to the top of the Mound. At the top, there will be a symbolic ’Opening’, Professor Józef Szajna’s work symbolising the transition from ’evil’ which negates all fundamental human values to ’good’, based on tolerance, trust and love of the neighbour. DALL’INFERNO DEL KL AUSCHWITZ AD OŚWIĘCIM CITTÀ DELLA PACE IL TUMULO DELLA MEMORIA E DELLA RICONCILIAZIONE 3 Professor Józef Szajna and Janusz Marszałek, Mayor of Oświęcim, receiving the stone from Mayor of Hiroshima, Tadatoshi Akiba, brought by the Japanese delegation on 13th June 2006. The project of the Mound by Professor Józef Szajna. ’Opening’ by Prof. Józef Szajna “Apertura” Opera del Prof. Józef Szajna ’ All visitors, good-willed people, presidents of countries, members of different organisations – take at least one stone to the top of the Mound, just a clod of earth – for the sake of catharsis, too. We must do a lot to protect our lives – remembering the dead.’ Cornerstone 4 FROM THE HELL OF KL AUSCHWITZ TO OŚWIĘCIM THE CITY OF PEACE CATHARSIS. Prof. Józef Szajna The priests of different faiths at the ceremony of laying the cornerstone under the Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation. On 14th June 2007 the Groundbreaking Plaque and the cornerstone were laid in the planned location of the Mound Of Remembrance and Reconciliation. Among the ceremony guests, there were former prisoners with the originator of the idea, Professor Józef Szajna, the representatives of various religions, consuls, the representatives of local and national authorities as well as numerous people of good will expressing a strong support for this initiative. ’For the remembrance of future generations, we gathered here together to lay the cornerstone under the Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation, built according to the idea of Professor Józef Szajna, former political prisoner of KL Auschwitz no. 18 729, a great man of theatre and fine arts, a director and stage designer. The author himself explained the idea behind building the Mound: ’I thought that the 20th century was the climax – that World War II was the last one. But when it occurred that in spite of all those experiences the third millennium begun with war, I felt like I shared the responsibility. I thought it was only because I had not fought for peace strong enough. Maybe our influence on people creating political and economic systems is too weak – the people who do not care for peace but just keep on fighting. This is why I suggested building the Mound of Remembrance of the Victims of Homicide and the Reconciliation of People around the World’. (...) This Groundbreaking Plaque is the crowning achievement of numerous people of good will to fulfil the idea of Professor Józef Szajna for the future generations. It is our desire for the Mound to represent the remembrance of the Auschwitz Gehenna, but also to provoke the contemporary to reflect on the necessity of peaceful co-existence.’ Part of the Groundbreaking Plaque. CATARSI. Prof. Józef Szajna Guests at the celebration of laying the cornerstone: 14th June 2007 Invitati alla celebrazione della posa della pietra miliare: 14 giugno 2007. Guests at the celebration of laying the cornerstone. Parte della Targa Commemorativa Project 6 FROM THE HELL OF KL AUSCHWITZ TO OŚWIĘCIM THE CITY OF PEACE THE OF AND MOUND REMEMBRANCE RECONCILIATION Description of the Project Descrizione del Progetto In Poland, a Mound is a form of a memorial being an expression of tribute to the people it was build for. The background for the ceremony was the music of the Roma performed by artists from Wielkopolska, a province in Western Poland. Hans-Gert Poettering – President of the European Parliament – gave the former prisoners of KL Auschwitz a stone for the Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation to be built in Oświęcim. It is a stone donated by the European Parliament. During the ceremony, the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, said that during his last-year’s meeting with Janusz Marszałek, Mayor of Oświęcim and Łukasz Szajna, he discussed the idea of building the Mound and the exhibition project to be shown at the EP. “I had no doubts as regards becoming a patron to this event”. His speech also had a personal accent. Mr Poettering said that he was born in September 1945. Several months before, his father had died at the front in Eastern Germany, in areas now being part of Poland. “Today, both countries are part of united Europe”. Quote: “I am speaking as a German, aware that Auschwitz is the darkest page in the history of my nation, my country, the continent and all humanity”. But I am also speaking as the President of the European Parliament, a democratically elected institution representing 500 million Europeans from 27 countries. We in the EU are obliged to object to any form of extremism, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.” On 21st January 2009, President Poettering hosted a representation of Oświęcim at a 50-minutes meeting. He said he would like to visit Oświęcim to see how the work on building the Mound progresses. The representation also met with Polish Euro MPs. The exhibition aroused wide-spread interest and was a great promotion success for Oświęcim. Oświęcim – Centro storico. Auschwitz – that was the name the Nazi regime gave to the city of Oświęcim during World War II. For the today’s world, the name means a Place of Remembrance of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is a sacred place! This is the largest graveyard in the world – the place of tragedy of Poles, Jews, Roma and Sinti, soviet prisoners and the representatives of numerous religions and nations of the world. Apart from the Place of Remembrance of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, total area of 190 hectares, Oświęcim – the City of Peace – is also dynamically developing at the area of 30 km2. The City of Peace - this is the name given to Oświęcim by the former prisoners of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau who survived the nightmare of the Nazi torment. Their desire is to prevent people living in Oświęcim from suffering, after over 60 years from the moment World War II ended, because of the Nazi homicide in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. Also to show to the tourist and pilgrims visiting the former KL Auschwitz-Birkenau the monuments of more than 800 years of history of Oświęcim. To show the Castle and the historic churches, the synagogue and charming tenements in the Old Town. To show how peaceful coexistence of people of various religions and cultures existed in Oświęcim for many centuries. Before 1939, Oświęcim was called ’ Little Jerusalem’. Such beautiful history should not be forgotten. Rightly do the esteemed people of the world call ’ Auschwitz - never again’. The citizens of Oświęcim call for exactly the same thing. And they add: ’ We want our city to grow and for the people living here, along with the visitors, to take joy from the friendly atmosphere of this city’.
