Abstract
The European Values Study is a single cross-national and longitudinal research project that
investigates the ideas, beliefs, preferences, attitudes, values and opinions of European citizens
regarding life, the family, religion, politics, society and work. The study was started in 1981 and is
repeated every nine years. The fourth edition (2008) covers 47 European countries for a total of
67,492 people interviewed, while the Italian sample population totaled 1,519 persons.
In light of the data of this last edition, we have attempted to understand which are the paths pursued
in the constitution of a couple and how they integrate with each other and what value orientations,
beliefs and opinions make up the cultural baggage. The couple paths/profiles have been
reconstructed bearing in mind the different levels of formalization/institutionalisation, comparing
Italy and the rest of Europe. In addition, the important link between family, values and religion was
highlighted.
