DECEMBER
JAN UARY
Palma Sola Presbyterian Church
The Agape Connection
What better way to bring my first year of ministry here to a close and to begin my second year than with the
joyous celebration of Jesus’ birth and the ringing in of the New Year! Whatever is going on in our lives, whatever
we have experienced this past year, surely the promise given by Isaiah gives us cause for deep joy, confident hope,
and calming peace:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government shall be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
WONDERFUL COUNSELOR,
MIGHTY GOD,
EVERLASTING FATHER,
PRINCE OF PEACE.
(Isaiah 9:6)
That gospel word is ultimately what we’re all about here at Palma Sola: being “RENEWED by CHRIST’S
SPIRIT” as we embrace all that God has done for us in this Child and “RELEASED for CHRIST’S SERVICE” as
we place our lives under his governance and share this beautiful good news with those around us!
During this holiday season, we pray that you will join us every Sunday for the following special worship
opportunities to stay focused on the heart of our faith ~ Jesus himself:

DECEMBER
2014/JANUARY
2015
December 7, 2014
There will be a JOINT Service at 10 a.m. followed by the annual Christmas luncheon. Don’t forget to bring a dish! We will
be celebrating “The Hanging of the Greens” in this service - an interactive, narrated event celebrating the Christian meanings
behind the decorations as we decorate the church with poinsettias, wreaths, lighting of candles and Christmas ornaments for
our Chrismon tree. There will be no Children’s Chapel or Wee Worship during this service as it is a “family friendly” gathering. We will not have Communion during worship this Sunday as we will be celebrating Communion at our Christmas Eve
Candlelight service this year.
December 14th, 2014
We will have both services this Sunday. The Dawning service at 9 a.m. will incorporate readers and music with “Stories and
Songs” in this celebration of Christmas. At 10 a.m., we invite all to a “Cookie Exchange”! Everyone should bring in their
favorite cookies to exchange with others. You can even bring in copies of your recipes to share if you wish. Fellowship and
cookies equal a great time for all! The Traditional Service at 11 a.m. will include a Christmas Cantata - “Once Upon a Night”,
a joyful Christmas celebration of the choir singing the Christmas story narrated by Preston Boyd as Luke. We need shepherds
for this event - young, old, tall and short - and as many as possible. All that is involved is for you to wear your best shepherd’s
costume (if you don’t have one, we can supply one) and walk up to see baby Jesus near the end of our program. No speaking
is involved. You then will return to your seat for the end of the program. If interested, please call Bonnie Wolfgram at 941792-3141 (church office) or 941-747-9358 (home). This is a beautiful and meaningful service which is also “family friendly”.
We hope all of you will join us!
December 21st, 2014
We will have two services (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.). Indy will place blessings over the Prayer Shawls and Prayer Squares, faithfully crafted by Barbara Watt and Cookie McClimon.
December 24th , 2014
Candlelight Christmas Eve Service at 5:30 p.m. - Communion will be served at this Candlelight Service and will include a
children’s skit with our own Church kids!
December 28th, 2014
Joint service in the Sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. Cori Rigney will be preaching.
January 4th, 2015
One combined service at 10 a.m. with a brunch to follow. Ben Mathes, a dynamic speaker with Rivers of the World (ROW),
will present the sermon with information regarding this mission. There will be a freewill offering to benefit ROW.
January 11th, 2015
Dawning service at 9 a.m. and Traditional service at 11 a.m. - Baptism of the Lord. You may come forward in this service to
allow Indy to give you the blessing of the renewal of your baptism. Two Elders for each service will aid Indy with this
special event.
January 18th, 2015
We will have two services, 9 a.m. Dawning and 11 a.m. Traditional - Ordination of Deacons and Elders. Come join us in
prayer for our continuing and new Deacons and Elders as we share our appreciation for their faithful dedication to our church
throughout their terms of duty.
Invite a friend to join you during this
special season of events.

Preston Boyd is a well-known actor, director and
theatre teacher in this area having moved here from
New York in the 1980’s.
He has worked at almost every theatre in the
Sarasota, Venice, Bradenton area. He has directed a
number of productions for the Manatee Players, the
Island Players and performed in shows at the Asolo and
the Florida Studio Theatre. In April 2013, Preston
directed and performed in a production of “Cotton
Patch Gospel” here at Palma Sola Presbyterian Church.
He taught in the Performing Arts Department of
St. Stephen’s Episcopal School from 1990 - 2014 and
at State College of Florida as an Adjunct Theatre
Instructor.
Bonnie, our Director of Music, invited Preston to
play the part of Luke, physician and Gospel writer in
our upcoming cantata on December 14th. A cantata is
an Italian word literally meaning “sung” and is a vocal
composition with an instrumental accompaniment,
typically written in several sections and involving choir
and soloists.
In the case of “Once Upon a Night”, composed by
Pepper Choplin, these sections are connected by the
storytelling of Luke (Preston) who shares the Christmas
story from a unique human perspective.
He describes the struggle and unbelief of
Zechariah, the innocent faith of Mary, the exuberance
of the shepherds and the quiet joy of Simeon. Listeners
experience the real human emotions of these people
and relate to the Christmas story on a whole new level.
Come to the Traditional service on Sunday
morning, December 14th at 11:00 a.m. and let Preston
Boyd take you to this very special time and place ~
“Once Upon a Night”!

Palma Sola Presbyterian Concert Series
Popular pOpera!
There are certain pieces of music a church musician expects to hear sung with great gusto within the walls of the church
~ “Joy to the World”, “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”, “Now Thank We All Our God” to name a few, but I have to say,
hearing the Concert Series audience on Sunday afternoon at Palma Sola burst into “Volare!” was quite a surprise!!
“Volare” was one of the popular pieces performed at Sunday’s concert by husband and wife team Randolph Locke and
Carol Sparrow, in addition to musical theater numbers like “What Kind of Fool Am I?”, “The Impossible Dream”,
“Memories”, “Till There Was You”, and “All I Ask of You”.
The “opera side” of the program included favorites like “Habanera”, “Mon Coeur”, “Nessun dorma”, “Vilja” from The
Merry Widow, “My Prayer” and “Time to Say Goodbye” (Con te Partirò).
The audience enjoyed Randy and Carol’s warm playful personalities in addition to their beautiful voices so it was an
enjoyable afternoon all the way around, including an elegant reception with an array of foods that went on forever!
Thank you Zan Mustaine and your marvelous team of kitchen helpers! And thank you ushers who are warm and friendly
and make everyone who attends our concerts happy to be in this place!

Humanity, Heifer Project, Hope Seeds, Manasota
Operation Troop Support, Meals on Wheels PLUS are
just a few of the 2014 Alternative Christmas Market
participants. They also have a “Cookie Room” where
you can purchase delicious goodies. The Palma Sola
Mission Team supplies the breakfast goodies and
juice, and the lunch of sandwiches, chips, dessert and
drinks. It is an enjoyable ministry to be a part of.
