Presidente Consiglio Regione Toscana) First of all I want to say thanks to Mr. Carlo Gasparri for letting me apart of his efforts, inviting me to the foreword of his book, or to be correct of his guide about the “ways of the seabeds of the Isle of Elba and of the Tuscan archipelago” and I can say, if there is a person who loves the sea in an almost -I would say- “pathological” way, this is right Carlo. We know each other since we were young boys, even if my friendship was rather with his older brother Franco and his younger brother Piero, who were instead closer to my age. Both our families managed caterings in Procchio in the mid ‚50-es. Carlo, instead, did not used to play with us that often, since he was always at sea, either for fishing or just for being under water, exploring the other side of the world. We young people, the “owners” of Procchio‘s beach, were used to spend our days approaching the first tourist-girls from the northern Europe, trying to understand the pictures of the photographs, chatting with writers or following the brushstrokes of some artists like Gonni, Baraldi, Lieto and so on..all came to Elba to find some relax and peace. Then, enchanted by its various territory and especially by its crystal-clear sea, some of them decided to move here. But no more memories of the carefree days, even if happy. Through this guide Carlo has really filled the lack of information about the whole Tuscan archipelago and, particularly, about Elba‘s beautiful seabeds; this guide will become a very interesting tool for learning for all fans of diving, giving them precise suggestions and a detailed picture of what they are going to discover themselves. Only the person that deeply knows and loves these special places and their peculiarities can pass, through his enthusiasm, such particular knowledge to somebody else, since he saw himself these places changing over the years, both in a positive and negative way. He is the only one able to give to the diving-fans the impression of being taken by the hand and leaded into the best, most interesting places, both for learning the fish fauna and the marine landscape itself, always in security and with respect for the magnificent, unknown environment. Our thanks go to Carlo for filling the cultural lack about the marine landscapes, as completion and enhancement of the artistic, cultural and landscape heritage of the Tuscan region, for what it represented in the past and still representing in the world. Thanks again to my friend, Carlo Gasparri. Giuliano Fedeli (V. President of the Regional Council of Tuscany) Noch Mal vielen Dank dem Freund Carlo Gasparri. Carlo Gasparri Diving guide: the underwater environment Tauchführer: die Unterwasserwelt The underwater environment is made of a complex of factors, whose contrasts are extreme and the smallest particulars may become very important. For reading up on diving, the diver looks to dedicated magazines: a lot of pages have been written and everyone had told about what he saw, but the initiative of the Union of the Communes of the Tuscan archipelago, funded by the Region of Tuscany has a different target, i.e. presenting to the diving-fans some underwater ways, carefully prepared under every point of view, for teaching about the environment and protecting the nature from the indiscriminate exploitation of resources. Through this underwater activity we learn self-control and respect for the environment on a long-term, especially for the younger generations; on our territory there are diving centers that, with the support of professional instructors, offer a great service. Not referring to them and to the service they provide, it would mean to operate against our environment and economy. Diving means a lot of things, experiencing nature and -most important- protecting it. Knowing the sea biocenosis has also several practical aspects: it gives a picture of the seabed‘s conditions at a particular time, the inventory and the location of the benthic and pelagic population in a specific area. The seabed‘s characteristics hold a crucial role for a correct management of the submerged seaside and it‘s especially useful for the protection of the natural heritage. Our supervision was, in fact, more than a simple description of what you see during a diving session, giving instead a detailed picture of the life forms in the different places. In the guide have been analyzed five regiones of the Isle of Elba: the Scoglietto (small cliff) in Portoferraio, the Careno in S. Andrea, the Oasi degli dèi (Oasis of Gods) at Punta Polveraia, the shallows in Fetovaia and the shallows outside the Corallina, exposed so that the diver gets precise information about the best places for diving. Moreover there are notes in the guide about all vulnerable organisms of each way, so that a proper education and awareness of the tourists for respecting the environment is necessary. Only through an adequate awareness campaign the diving-fans can become the main characters of the protection of these natural beauties as well as key actors aware of the economic development of our delightful island. Arch. Mario Ferrari Underwater ways Unterwasserwege Among the many turistic routes that the archipelago of Tuscany can offer, one of the most suggestive is represented by the seabeds of its islands: a real casket of submerged treasures, able to rise unique sensations and emotions thanks to the number of beautiful things mixing up in a particular and unrepeatable frame. Anyway only a few people know exactely the real entity of the natural richness existing in our sea. A lack of information that the Union of the Communes, under the defence of the Unione di Comuni of the archipelago of Tuscany wants to solve - even if partially - through the underwater leaded paths. The target of the project, finanzed by Regione Toscana, is to support the eco-friendly tourism having more and more success until today, thanks to the renewed interest for the sea-environment. But a good management of the submerged seaside can not split the natural aspects from the socialeconomical ones. Finding the best strategies for supporting both the economic development and the safeguard of the natural environment is not easy. The many uses of the seasides with the implications on the marine environment as well as on the economic activities require functional, integrated and sustainable management strategies, so that the management turns out effective and well-balanced. This requires a good knowledge of the problematics, thus it‘s necessary to support these strategies with the right tools for getting a picture of the area and its ecosystems, also collecting data in order to get a general view of the biogeography of the seabeds. The seabeds represent in fact a key role for the right management of the submerged seaside and are very useful for protecting and preserving our natural richness. Moreover a cartographical representation makes them easier to read and more effective the destination of use. The knowledge of the biocenosis is an answer to a number of practical necessities: they give not only a picture of the seabed conditions in a particular moment, but also the inventory and location of the benthic populations in a specific area. Only knowing the distribution of the different kinds of life forms you may correctly manage the seasides underwater. The project gives instructions about the working procedures tuned on five test areas of the Isle of Elba, about ecosustainable tools of the submerged seaside and it‘s also a reach guide for diving in the most beatiful and suggestive areas of the island. The diving is organized in benthic and pelagic enviroments, where you get in touch with vulnerable organisms. In the guide are listed all the characterics of each habitat; it‘s thus necessary a proper education of the tourists as well as of the managers of the diving centers, so that the divers can enjoy diving while admiring the fantastic and delighful beauties of Elba, respecting its environment. Arch. Lo Scoglietto The Isle of Elba is, with no doubts, one of the most beautiful places for those who love diving; the magic of this activity gets back to three essential elements: the clearness of its sea, the natural beauties of its seabeds and the possibility to dive in every season, since you always find a protected place where you can dive even under bad weather conditions. Looking at the seabed from the surface even wearing a mask, the tourist has the impression of being in a multicolor aquarium and he will enjoy the view of breams, groupers, dentexes, amberjacks and barracudas. If you then dive with the scuba, the show gets really impressive, since you swim together with fishes you usually may see only on tv. The diver may meet in fact several times a number of big shoals of multicolored, common fishes, whose quantity gives you an idea of the endless richness of nature, inviting you in the water to enjoy that life, so far from the daily problems. Here still exist some delightful places for diving and underwater paradises that still look like a virgin, unpolluted sea, as it was many years ago. It‘s good to know the morphology of the seabeds in order to turn images into real views; once you know it, you do not risk to swim over grasslands of alga missing some beautiful areas just behind the corner. The guide about ways underwater, with its precise information, is the best tool if you want to make sure to dive in the most suggestive places. Let‘s start a roundup of the seabeds of the island talking about the “small cliff” (Scoglietto), a sort of miniature of Elba that includes all the 40°49’765”/010°19’870” characteristics of this island. The small cliff, located at north of Portoferraio, is an area under biologic sea protection since 1971, where fishing is prohibited. This decision ensures to the place a very special habitat, representative of several eco-types of the Mediterranean Sea. The nature on the seabed, in general pretty rocky, is the ideal place for those, who love snorkeling or dive even to deeper with scuba. From 5 to 40 mt. Deepness you may see a number of treasures of the marine biology. This thanks to a soft but continuous upward stream that let circulate water from the bottom to the top. The motion, under which the material get melted, let the cliff having a large variety of both benthic and pelagic life. The most interesting areas for diving are the many gorges and caves along the cliff, which give shelter almost every kind of Tirrenian fauna, in particular big, brave groupers (they don‘t care about the human being) you can meet even at four or five meters deepness. Two red buoys with a white stripe in the middle for anchoring the diver‘s boats, have been set there by the Commune of Portoferraio. The one set at the west and the other at the east, the buoys define the sea track dedicated to the underwater ways. At the east, in front of the little ladder leading to the lighthouse, well visible, you can find the table with the map of the ways on a huge rock with a large cascade. You swim among shoals, having the crag on your left during the whole dive, until you reach a big anchor “admiral”, at a www.elba-sentierisubacquei.com deepness of 27 mt. Few meters further, a plate with a picture of the seabed, shows the position and the direction to follow in order to get to the edge, where the cliff falls sheer from 22 down to 35-40 mt.: a vertiginous stretch of the seabed. The morphology of the steep bank at the northside has particular gorges and caves covered with a huge bioconstruction of encrusting alga (coralline), with calcified thallus, tipical of the dark environments. In here take form substrates full of gorges in which anchor a variety of animal grubs: from nudibranchs of different colors to asteroids, crabs fasten at the rock, to the white and transparent rock salmon‘s eggs and then in the dusk you may see: forkbeards, brown meagres, scorpion fishesand again groupers of every dimension. You get at the end to a big cave, where is set the plate showing the way back. The security stop is at 4-5 mt. Deepness on a huge area with rocks and algas, among sarpa salpas, shoals of white and black sea breams. The buoy at the west-side shows the diving area dedicated to the Christ, winged fauna‘s guardian, at 39 mt. deepness by the non-commissioned officer cadets of the Italian finance police, before their transfer from the Isle of Elba. The map of the way is set on the rock exposed to the north-side that goes from the external wall down to 14 mt. deepness on the sandy seabed. Also in here you swim several minutes among fishes in the northern direction, until you reach the edge at 23 meters deepness, where we suggest to stop laying on the edge, as it happens during the “waiting fishing”, since in here, thanks to the continuous nourishing intake pushed by the stream, it starts the main ring of the food chain, creating a number of types of benthic and pelagic faunas. Higher on the line of the thermocline you can find an infinity of younger fishes attracting shoals of barracudas, sometimes so huge to hide the sunlight and if you are lucky you can even meet amberjacks, Atlantic bonitos and tunas. Deeper is the place of groupers, brown meagres, black sea basses and breams: basically you have here all the spectacular ingredients for enjoying the beauty of the sea. Putting out to sea, the steep and very cracky cliff goes down to 35 meters; holding the wall on your right, the cliff presents more difficult downhills, where a big variety of organisms have found the perfect habitat: sponges, diaphanous and transparent urochordatas, but especially gorgonias of different colors and lobsters. Keep on swimming holding the right, at 39 mt. deepness on the sand, close to the huge cliff, you see the statue of the Christ. The path from the Christ to the cave, where the plate for the way back is set, is one of the richest and most flourish “temples” of marine life; an Eden for the filter feeders, who have found on the wall, hit by a soft stream bringing oxygen and nourishing substances, the ideal place to live. A lot of gorges hosting both sciaphilous and phytophylous are allover the cave; the ceiling is covered with colorful organisms, among which you find several life forms very vulnerable. Please be careful: do not drain the nozzle inside the caves, since the air remaining on the ceiling may kill the organisms. So please always be careful and watch your trim, in order to not damage the very fragile biocenosis od the seabed. The map, fixed beyond the cave‘s arch, shows the way to a fall of rocks next to the boat. The way is located between the village of Sant‘ Andrea and the small island of Formica, at around 100 mt. from the coast. The buoys are fastened on sand, where the clear water lets get a vision of the place of big impact. The seabed close to the shore is covered with a thick and flourishing posidonia grassland, while further in the open sea the area is characterized, for a part, of peaks of granit rocks, 4-5 mt. high, rising from a seabed at 15-20 mt. deepness, falling all of a sudden down to the edge of the cliffs to even deeper seabeds. The different kinds of rocks, covered with a carpet of alga, small caves and colored slits are a good shelter for fishes. The fascinating forms together with the colors of the seascape make the experience unforgettable, so many and sometimes even too strong are the impressions for the diver during the two diving sessions suggested by the guide. It‘s right here, on the seabed of the Careno, that the underwater life saw the light. This has been observed in the past by characters as Alessandro Olschki, Gianfranco Bernardi, Claudio Ripa, Ennio Falco and many others, whose names are famous 42°48’021”/010°08’084” the same; the place has been and still is target of hundreds of divers, sensitive to the beauty of these seabeds. This is a special area, the one of the Careno, both for the charm of the emerged land, with its amazing granitic walls and the narrow inlets like jewels along the coast, and for the exuberance of the underwater life, flourishing in these rocky seabeds. Everywhere stand out the strong colours of poriferas, growing in every slit with strange forms, creating a multicoloured carpet; in there stand also out the yellow parazoanthus-flowers, flooding all slits in the walls, right next to the smooth colours of the big spirographs here and there. In august, all these submerged cliffs, are hit by strong streams that are the reason of the extraordinary richness of the underwater life, both sedentary and of passage. But this movement of the body of water may often make the diving difficult; for avoiding this, we studied two ways: under the buoy nr. 1 has been set the map of the way without stream, while under the buoy nr. 2 is set the map showing the direction to follow when you have tail stream. The richness of the ground layer, the variety and the quality of the sorts there and the possibility to meet shoals of barracudas, amberjacks coming out from the blue and swimming around you, looking at you with their big, black and round eyes, doubtful dentexes passing close to you, tunas appearing all of a sudden from the blue water, all this makes the Careno of Sant‘ Andrea an obligatory stop for the curriculum of a good diver. www.elba-sentierisubacquei.com IL CARENO DI SANT’ANDREA Die Route befindet sich zwischen dem Dorf von S. Andrea und dem Inselchen Formica, ca. 100 Mt. vor der Küste. Dott.sa Claudia Castellani Influence of the marine environment on the diversity and productivity of plankton Einfluss der Meeresumwelt auf die Vielfalt und Produktivität des Planktons The diversity and the richness of the sea life forms are tightly linked to the presence of plankton, micro-vegetable organisms (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton), that live in suspenction in water columns. Thanks to its small size and high productivity, plankton plays a keey role in the food chain of the marine eco-system, since it represents the main food for both larvas and adults of planktivorous kinds of planktonic invetrebrates such as copepods and benthics, as corals, fishes, whales and even birds. But the plankton production is not continous over time and space, since it is closely linked to the hydrographic, chimical-physical and topographic characteristics of sea and climate. Different conditions of the light related to place, season and latitudes as well as to food concentration, temperature, streams and stratifications of bodies of water are, for instance, some crucial factors for the growth of such micro-organisms. As for land plants, the vegetal part of plankton, the phytoplankton, requires solar energy for making the photosyntheesis and macronourishing such as nitrate and phosphorus as well as micro-nourishing such as iron for growing. The zooplankton eats instead the phytoplankton. But in the sea the light intensity gets lower going deeper, while the concentration of nourishing elements usually grows close to the seabed because of sediments. The phytoplanktonic population, anyway, is made of a number of different kinds, all able to use the different conditions of light and food concentrations at different deepnesses. Thus growth and diversity of phytoplankton may vary depending on the combination of light and food along the body of water. Position, place and movement of plankton masses are given, almost entirly, by the sea streams and the density of the bodies of water: without these conditions the most of these organisms would just lay on the seabed. The formation and the position of the thermocline during the season represents a very important hydrographic characteristic, since it supports a high plankton productivity: the rising of the temperature in spring-summer lets the column of water getting stratified, alternating warm and cold water, thicker and richer of food. This formation makes the phytoplankton stay in the surface, where the conditions of light are favourable for the growth and the development until the nourishment available is enough. In autumn, the light radiation gets weaker and winds blow stronger, while the water temperature on the surface gets lower so that the thermocline moves deeper in the water, causing the fall of the phytoplankton production and of the sea eco-system. During winter, the further fall of the water temperature on the surface makes the thermocline disappear and the waters get mixed. The food supply for the plankton on the surface is also supported by the streams, especially in they meet the seaside or some underwater relief (seamounts) and because they flow to the surface, they bring the nourishing with, necessary for the “fertilization” of the phytoplankton. The seamounts are also a place of high diversity and productivity of phytoplankton (i.e. of primary productivity) and again of zooplankton, corals and fish (i.e. secondary productivity), right because the seabed, and thus the nourishment, is so close to the photic zone on the surface. Il percorso è articolato per restare entro i limiti della curva di sicurezza, ma una sosta di qualche minuto, vista la profondità raggiunta, è quasi obbligatoria. www.elba-sentierisubacquei.com Fetovaia Fetovaia‘s shallows are located next to the homonymous beach, in front of the cliff “Le Calle” and, thanks to the clearness of the water, the shallows are easily visible from the surface. The first place you notice is a stretch at 20-25 mt. deepness, where the environment is characterized by a rock covered by algas and posidonias, sprinkled with sea plants and flowers with large and plumed corollas; here you can meet big female octopusses busy with their eggs. Diving deeper the gorgonias get thicker, the briozoos show all their beauty as well as the other cliff fishes, often hidden in some hole. This is the kingdom of the gorgoniacs, presenting almost all the sorts; also there are a lot of “chamalent” with fans over one meter high and other plants as the strictas, which create an extraordinary mix of contrasts. At 40 mt. deepness, where you find the table for the way back, the wall is covered with big red fans, sometimes presenting some yellow spots. If you look at the cliff, you can see a lot of sponges and a thick composition of coral organisms as well as hantias and white breams. Diving back is also very interesting, both at the seabed and in the free water, looking at the water surface for observing the pelagic fishes. The path is made in order to let you dive within the limits of the secutity curve, but some minutes break, once you reached that deppness, is really worth. www.elba-sentierisubacquei.com Fetovaia Die Untiefe von Fetovaia befindet sich bei dem gleichnamigen Strand, vor dem Riff “Le Calle“, aus dem man die Untiefe durch das kristallklare Wasser sehen kann. The coral shallows are located out of the headland of Capo Fonza. It‘s an imposing, calcareous mass, which rises vertically like a castle for 37 mt., from a seabed at 40 mt. deepness to 3 mt. over the sea surface. The buoy is anchored on the top of the shallows, that through their bright color reflect the sunlight in the deep blue water. In fact this is a ridge, that on the north-east wall throws down from 3 to 40 mt., extending to the south, in the direction of Montecristo, to a deepness of 45 mt. For those, who love taking pictures, this wall represents a scenery of rare beauty. The dive gives the emotion of a very suggestive descent into the blue. One side at the top is covered with algas, an area of pasturage for fishes like white breams, and multicolored thrushes, who prepare their nests; on another side the blue gets darker and the light spreads its rays getting softer and softer, the red looks brown and it rules the blue. The composition of organisms covering the rocks changes and only the artificial light gives back the chromatic brightness of the life forms. It changes, all of a sudden, from the soft colors of the fotofila-seaweeds to the brighter ones of the encrusting seaweeds, red, brown and green algas covering the whole cliff and fill it with thousands nuances. At a deepness of 20-25 mt. you enter the kingdom of coral, which is still the more complex and less known environment. The very inclined wall, not subject to deposits, explodes into a blaze of color with whirling cascades of 42°43’930”/010°16’980” asteroids, parazoanthus‘ yellow flowers, multicolor bunches of tubicular worms in the rock supporting them as well as sponges of every kind. The most fascinating moment of the dive is the meeting with the white and delicate octopus of the red coral, whose branches look like jasmine trees in flowers. This is the most exciting experience for the diver. You better do not touch the blooming branches, since they are the living part of the coral: just put your hand closer and you will see them to draw back inside the branch. The path goes mostly along the coral reef, where the encrusting calcareous seaweeds and sessile animals find favourable conditions for anchoring. But this is also the kingdom of the hantias, lobsters and scorpion fishes, extraordinary mimetic predators. At the end of the path, a well visible table fixed on the rock, shows the best way back to the top of the cliff, whose environment is characterized by yellow and pink gorgonias as well as by a number of purple sea lilies. Here the meeting with both pelagic and botanic fauna is sure; in the fissuring of rocks it may hide raven fishes, white breams, scorpion fishes and groupers. Looking higher you may find dentexes and barracudas. In the highest part of the shallows, white breams, saddlead and ray‘s breams get close to the divers, who perform the decompression process for security reasons. www.elba-sentierisubacquei.com FONZA Die Untiefe der Corallina befindet sich vor dem Vorgebirge von Capo Fonza. Target of this project is to create a small, protected sea oasis, where the nine, big sculptures attract the attention of all those people, who love nature, art, culture, sport, study and all what you may feel while diving along the way we prepared for you: it extends on a surface of about 800 sq. mt., in the crystal waters of Punta Polveraia, right in the middle of the channel of Corsica and under the lighthouse, a few meters from the seaside, at 12 mt. deepness and surrounded with a grassland of poseidonia. At the beginning of the project we considered different places where to put our sculptures, taking in consideration the biodiversity, monitoring the quality of the sea water through sensors that detect its characteristics (temperature, salinity, strenght and direction of the streams, hydrophone for the underwater sounds, intelligent cameras for viewing the happenings in real time, sending data via internet about the constants in real time), because of the strategic position of the way. It‘s an ambitious project for sure, that requires support both from privates and public for making it come true, considering that this museum is one of the few in the world without architectural barriers.
