WINE SPECIALS
sparkling
ruinart rosé pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier: reims, champagne, france, nv
glass 24
Since 1729, Ruinart stands as the oldest established Champagne house. Before Louis XV’s law allowing the transfer of wine in
bottles, it had to be sold in barrel, making the distribution of sparkling wine impossible. Nicolas Ruinart took advantage of this
new law, and his company still makes one of the best Champagnes there is. Coppa is pleased to be able to offer this special
wine, by the glass, thanks to our Perlage preservation system. You’ll never enjoy pink as much as this!
white
le xi (undici) terre garganega and trebbiano: custoza superiore, veneto, italy, 2010
glass 12
Undici means eleven in Italian. This gorgeous white blend embodies the eleven (or XI in Roman numerals) lands that the winery
possesses, and is a perfect match for Houston’s spring weather.
red
marchesi di grésy, monte arribaldo dolcetto: alba, piedmont, italy, 2010
glass 12
The di Grésy family has been on the this south-facing hilltop property since 1797, and is especially proud of this easy drinking
dolcetto. It goes well with everything, from our small plates, to house made pastas, to the delicate pizzas from our oven.

ITALIAN RED WINE - Piedmont
There are two main differences between Barbaresco and. Barolo. The soils in Barbaresco are mostly limestone-based soils, which
means less tannin. The climate has less of a temperature swing which produces grapes that ripen sooner but have thinner skins.
This means Barbaresco usually has less tannin and color. Thus, Barbaresco wines are usually lighter tasting and less tannic than
Barolo.

Want something different? Check out our Barbera and Nebbiolo from Langhe. It’s a region that contains both Barolo and
Barbaresco, but includes wines made from ‘declassified’ sites. They are lighter and less tannic, with similarities to Pinot Noir.

But what about those other varietals? Barbera is the most planted red grape variety in Piedmont and it’s a little less finicky than
Nebbiolo. Barbera wines from Piedmont are dark in color and taste of black cherry, anise, and dried herbs. Dolcetto is a bit of a
misnomer because the word means ‘little sweet one’: Dolcetto is neither sweet nor ‘little’. The wines made with Dolcetto are very
dark in color with flavors of blackberry, licorice and tar.

MORE ITALIAN RED WINE - Veneto and Tuscany
So what’s up with Amarone? And why is it so expensive? The grapes are picked a bit later to ensure ripeness and are left all
winter to dry into raisins. They’re left to sit for 120 or so days where they’ll lose 30% to 40% of their weight. The result is intense
concentration and a very high sugar content, which translates into 15% or higher alcohol levels. Do the math yourself: a hell of a lot
more fruit goes into that bottle of Amarone.

Luckily for all of us, there’s a less expensive secret! Most Amarone producers also bottle Valpolicella Ripasso, sometimes called
“Baby Amarone”. To make Ripasso, fresh Valpolicella Classico wine sits with leftover skins from the making of Amarone. The
resulting wine absorbs body and flavor, giving it a dry, medium-bodied wine with a similar complexity to Amarone - but cheaper!

What makes some Tuscan wines “super”? Basically, it’s a wine that supersedes Italian wine law. The term Super Tuscan was
coined in the 1970′s by Italian wine producers and wine writers to describe a wine from Tuscany produced with grapes that did not
meet appellation law. Grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, were placed under a low quality classification. until
producers like Antinori and his wine called Tignanello and Tenuta san Guido’s Sassicaia (yup, we’ve got those) bucked the system
by creating high-priced quality wines with the unsanctioned grapes. You know you want to be a rebel too, don’tcha?

MORE ITALIAN RED WINE - still in Tuscany
And then there’s wine from the rest of Tuscany - the stuff that put Tuscany on the wine map. I’m talking Sangiovese. It’s the most
widely planted red grape varietal in Italy. And although it grows all over, it’s king here. Give one of these bad boys a shot.

It’s no wonder people associate Tuscany with good wine. We love the use of French varietals like Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah,
Carignan and Pinot Noir. And did you know that Primitivo is a genetic match for a grape you know as Zinfandel?
